40th anniversary of Tolkien's passing into the west

The day isn't quite here, but I thought It would be fitting to have a thread to commemorate the person who gave us the gift of these wonderful stories. Perhaps a word or two about what these stories mean to you, what they have done for you or anything you might find fitting.

Thank You, Professor.

Thank you Demnation, for the thread.

Its hard to say fully, isn't it, how much that vision means. But when reading a work of fiction changes how you see the world, and impacts the choices you make in life, you know it means something very integral to who you are.

I add my thanks to the Professor as well. Angelic

Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!

I will never forget that day.

I was sixteen. My mom showed me the article in the newspaper. I read it, went out into the backyard, sat down under the willow tree, and cried.

I can't begin to say all the stories have done for me, but I particularly remember that on September 11, 2001, when the world suddenly looked bleak and my mother began her long decline into death, Gandalf's words to Frodo came back to me. "So do all who live in such times. But it is not theirs to choose. They have only to decide what to do with the time that is given to them."

"For DORA BAGGINS in memory of a LONG correspondence, with love from Bilbo; on a large wastebasket. Dora was Drogo's sister, and the eldest surviving female relative of Bilbo and Frodo; she was ninety-nine, and had written reams of good advice for more than half a century."

Well, this among many others

keeps me going when times are hard:

. . . Above all shadows rides the sun
and stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the day is done,
nor bid the stars farewell.

I owe him.

Pippin's Words to Merry

"Was there ever anyone like him? Except for Gandalf. I think they must be related." Pippin was speaking of Aragorn, but the words fit. It is astonishing that Middle Earth lived in the heart, mind and spirit of JRRT and that he was willing to share it with us all. We will not see his like again. Namarie Professor. You are beyond the circles of the world where there is more than memory.

A modern legend.

For so many of us, JRRT has influenced our lives in countless ways. His work and dedication is carried on by his Estate, especially his dutiful son Christopher, who has given so much effort to maintain his father's life works.

I can think of no better way to honor Tolkien than letting the man's own words speak for themselves.

"And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned to all silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise."

How to describe him!

This, from RotK, to me always described his impact: "And he sang to them, now in the Elven-tongue, now in the speech of the West, until their hearts, wounded with sweet words, overflowed, and their joy was like swords, and they passed in thought out to regions where pain and delight flow together and tears are the very wine of blessedness."

And this - is how he did it! Heart From "Leaf by Niggle":

..."He had a number of pictures on hand; most of them were too large and ambitious for his skill. He was the sort of painter who can paint leaves better than trees. He used to spend a long time on a single leaf, trying to catch its shape, and its sheen, and the glistening of dew-drops on its edges. Yet he wanted to paint a whole tree, with all of its leaves in the same style, and all the them different.
...There was one picture in particular which bothered him. It had begun with a leaf caught in the wind, and it became a tree; and the tree grew, sending out innumerable branches, and thrusting out the most fantastic roots. Strange birds came and settled on the twigs and had to be attended to. Then all round the Tree, and behind it, through the gaps in the leaves and boughs, a country began to open out; and there were glimpses of a forest marching over the land, and of mountains tipped with snow. Niggle lost interest in his other pictures; or else he took them and tacked them on to the edges of his great picture. Soon the canvas became so large that he had to get a ladder; and he ran up and down it, putting in a touch here, and rubbing out a patch there."

The Far Green Country under a swift Sunrise...

I think it is so odd that we, though heirs to his legacy, do not commemorate this day with more attention. This was the most important day of *his* life, when he passed from time into eternity, to rest until the General Resurrection of us all... When he at last went "released from all sickness, sorrow, and sighing, into a place of the light of God's countenance, a place of green pasture, where all the righteous dwell" -- as our Orthodox memorial services put it. And this will be the most important day of our lives too... when it comes and we too are "delivered from all tribulation, wrath, and necessity". Do we see how close these words are to his place beyond the grey rain-curtain of tears from whence came a light that turned the veil to silver and glass, and he beholds a far green country under a swift sunrise? p. 135 Chapter 8, FotR JRRT RIP So there was at least this thread, although I would have thought a mention of this anniversary should have merited mention on the Home Page...
