For those without a copy of "Letters": Some editions of the Silmarillion have this letter with the forewords

For example. In my eBook of the second edition, it appears in the preliminary pages, headed "from a letter by JRR Tolkien to Milton Waldman, 1951". So you may have this text already, even if you don't have a copy of "Letters". That said, Letters is an interesting read, for much more than letter number 131, and well worth buying (or borrowing from a public library, if funds are tight). Googling will find copies of the letter on the Internet, but it's usually not clear whether those copies are licensed from the copyright holder
I expect this discussion to be really interesting: well worth a bit of effort to get hold of the text.
Disclaimers: The words of noWizardme may stand on their heads! I'm often wrong about things, and its fun to be taught more.... "nowimė I am in the West, Furincurunir to the Dwarves (or at least, to their best friend) and by other names in other lands. Mostly they just say 'Oh no it's him - look busy!' " Or "Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!"
