"Your Middle-earth name" game

I expect people are familiar with those word games which generate "your name" for a particular fantasy/sci-fi world? Examples are probably the easier way to explain:

Generate Your Starship Enterprise name from the colour of your current underwear, and the last thing you ate (Ensign Aubergene Granola reporting for duty, sir!)

Generate your Star Wars name from a car you have driven and a medicine you have taken (Jedi Knight Zetec Loratidine, at your service).

Does anyone know if Middle-earth ones that work at all (enough to be entertaining?)

I'd expect it to be harder to sound feasible, since Tolkien mostly made his character names out of languages he'd invented, or borrowed them from mythology he'd read. this as opposed to choosing names with a certain sound (or whatever Rodenberry, Lucas et al did!)

But I bet people have had a try!

Disclaimers: The words of noWizardme may stand on their heads! I'm often wrong about things, and its fun to be taught more....

"nowimė I am in the West, Furincurunir to the Dwarves (or at least, to their best friend) and by other names in other lands. Mostly they just say 'Oh no it's him - look busy!' "
Or "Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!"

I suspect it'd be easier to create a Hobbit name

than for any other ME race - for instance your great-grandparent's name + the plant that is growing nearest to you (Vida Gooseberry, in my case).

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Very good, Vida!

Part of Tolkien's way of doing things means that hobbit name, dwarf names, elf names, etc. are each a recognisable set.

This looks like fun...

Jenny Lavender at your service. While we're at it, what about an Elvish name, too.

My Elvish name is Eldur...which sounds like a guy's name Tongue.

Drusilla Philodendron

There's three other green leafy plants on the table, unfortunately I have no idea what their names are...

If I were typing this while sitting outside, I could use the surname Hosta-Rhubarb! Laugh

What a lovely name Luella is.

I haven't come across it before. :)

actually, hostas were closer to me than the crabapple

but I liked crabapple better and it wasn't that much further.

There's a NZ Impatiens on the back step. And a fairy rose at the side of the house. They could make interesting names, I guess. There are also moss roses at the side. I like that name.

If I go with a different great grandmother I would have Regina MossRose. But Regina went by Cora so Cora MossRose.

Interestingly, Regina Titus married Henry Rose. So she had a botanical name already. And another greatgrandmother was 'Anise'... also a botanical name.

I have found quite a few Luellas in that family line

If you track family trees in lateral lines you can find a lot of nieces and nephews and grandkids with similar names. It can be confusing, though, too. Cousins can easily have the same name and be born around the same time.

Louisa Dianella

The Dianella is an Australian Native Lily.

I guess I could also have used Ferntree as a surname as there's one of them growing near the Dianellas. (I had to look out my window, we don't have plants inside).

"Anise"!

I've not heard that for a name, before! I did have a great-great-aunt "Bird", though.

I like "Regina FairyRose", it sounds like the queen of the Little People!

Nearest...hmm...

Lillie Spiderwort or Magdalene Hellebore, I guess, though technically an Eastern Hemlock tree is the nearest plant life at the moment. Dangerously close to Lillie Lily, too. =)

From Marion Lobelia.

I feel it necessary to clarify that I am in no way related to a certain Sacksville-Baggins. She actually swiped my name which is just so her.

There seems to be a thriving dwarf community in a Japanese kitchen - Nori, Dashi, and Sushi, for example! //

Hobbit name

Well, on that system, I seem to have a choice of:

Sarah Bramble
Sarah Willowherb
Sarah Dogrose
Sarah (NO-relation-to-Bill-at-Bree) Fern[y]
or (getting a bit posh here) Sarah Herb-Robert

which shows up what a wild, weedy garden I have. Oh dear.

There is an actual generator...

which has been posted on the site before... http://www.chriswetherell.com/hobbit/
It gives me the name Hob Millstone of Bywater.

I have come across a different way to create a Jedi name -
First Name -
Combine the first three letters of your last name (maiden name would work to I suppose) with the first two letters of your first name.
Second Name -
Combine the first two letters of your mother's maiden with the first three letters of the city you were born.

Donry Fetor is mine.

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

name generator

I went to the name generator on http://www.chriswetherell.com/hobbit/index.php, and I like my elven name MUCH better than my hobbit name!

Elven name- Luthien Felagund Laugh

Hobbit name- Rosie-Posie Bunce of Brockenborings (yikes!) Frown

I wish they had a dwarf name generator too :(

I did find the dwarf word for love (after much online searching!) and it is azyungel (tech. the love of love), and since my real life name means loveable that was the closest I got Crazy

I suppose my elf name could also be Melda, which also means beloved....

If only Khuzdul had been more developed like elvish was by the professor Unsure might be hard for an English speaker to pronounce, but it would have been very interesting to learn....

Dwarven name

There's an all-in-one name generator at the Barrow Downs website that will give you your Dwarven name as well as your Elven, Orkish, Hobbit and Adūnaic names. I have no idea how it "translates" your name (try entering your full name, just your first & last name, or if you're a married woman your maiden name vs. your married name for different variations) nor how accurate it is, but it's the most comprehensive I've found anywhere. http://www.barrowdowns.com/middleearthname.php

Here are mine:

Elven: Girithquįrėiel
Hobbit: Mimosa Sandyman
Dwarven: Lóin Lightningmirth
Orkish: Bśbwakh the Malicious
Adūnaic: Nuzīrzig
And apparently my modern human name makes me a "Scholarly Beorning" Laugh

The Mad Libs on that site are pretty fun too, if a little buggy. On a couple of them I laughed so loud I scared the cat!
