Last day of shooting

PJs facebook :

Our last day of shooting.

Ever since starting these blogs, there's been something I thought I'd like to try one day (as well as answering the other 19 questions I owe you!) - blogging throughout a shoot day in real time. Try to give you all a feeling for what we deal with on an average day.

Today is not exactly "average", given it's our last day of shooting, but if I don't do it today, I never will!

So here goes ... I'll try to update as much as I can during the day. At least with a quick photo. Text will depend a little on how busy it gets.

Right now, it's just gone 6.30am here in Wellington. I'm in bed, about to get up! I didn't get much sleep - too stressed about how we're going to get through everything we need to shoot. I kept running it over in my mind.

We're shooting scenes for Film 3 today. Stuff you will see in Dec 2014, so I'm going to try and make this honest, but spoiler free.

I've been lying here in pitch darkness, watching fight rehearsals over and over again. Our stunt co-ordinatior, Glen Boswell, worked with the actors last weekend, designing some climatic battle moments. He filmed them, and I have them on my iPad, in an application we wrote called "WingNut TV". It's a program that allows a huge amount of material to be catalog used and updated each day over the Internet. It contains all our dailies, edited films, previs, music, and much more. I'm looking at the fights, figuring out the angles I'll need to film them today. A huge amount to do, and it needs to get done.

Our shoot day starts at 8.30am, and is supposed to finish at 7.30pm. I suspect we'll be working late. Whenever we work a long day, I joke with the crew that I'm just softening them up for when Jim Cameron shows up in Wellington to shoot Avatar 2 and 3. Well ... It's not really a joke.

I'll try and update often today.

A ty mor ho! — hoj mor ho! detvo môjho rodu,
kto kradmou rukou siahne na tvoju slobodu;
a čo i tam dušu dáš v tom boji divokom:
Mor ty len, a voľ nebyť, ako byť otrokom.

This man just doesn't know when to quit - thank goodness!

"Final day of filming. What more can I do to share this Hobbit experience with the fans? I know! I'll sit down periodically throughout my unbelievably hectic 20-hour work day and blog about it! Yup, that'll be fun!"

Truly, I don't know how he does it, except that he's doing something he absolutely loves and gets energy from knowing others are interested, too.

Thank you, Peter.

Now take a month off on a tropical island somewhere.Smile

This is fantastic!!

PJ, saying it simply, gets it.

So much dedication and thoughtfulness, despite it probably being one of the most emotional days of his career. Of course the journey doesn't end here, and he still has a mountain of work left on these films. But that last day of shooting...it stays with you. With the scope, detail, and extensiveness of these films, he must be beyond exhaustion. Maybe he'll have his own "Well, I'm back" moment as he shuts the door coming home this evening. Thumbs way up to PJ, who, in my mind, gets up everyday because of the fans. I will never have a shred of doubt about his dedication to his craft, the texts, and the fans. He's his own breed, and continually shows his quality. Smile

There are going to be many sad people in NZ, and around the world when we see that shooting has finished in the next x hours. I remember watching that incredibly sad, yet uplifting part of the LOTR extras about his difficulties in taking that last shot of the trilogy. Just kept going. I can't wait to see this trilogy's conclusion (most likely being recorded by several people on set. Maybe even a couple of actors, who knows?).

Cheers to a fun, successful, and reflective final day of shooting, everyone. Heart Smile

Who's left?

Does anyone know which of the Dwarves and other characters are still shooting on the last day? I gather several have Twittered or Facebooked to say they're done already, but not sure who's still in the ring.

Day 5,562 of the mysterious reason PJ has to leave my house. I told him to stop saying such things about Dwarves. I've read the books and they aren't a bad sort. I told him to stop talking like that martin-human I keep hearing about but he didn't listen.

Day 5,897 of the mysterious reason PJ has to leave my house. Off he goes. On his eighth cup of tea already. I tried to tell him his shoes don't match but he didn't listen.

Day 6,785 of the mysterious reason PJ has to leave my house. He has two phones in hand, one on each side of his head. I tried to tell him he looks like Princess Leia but he didn't listen.

Day 6,789 of the mysterious reason PJ has to leave my house. I told him to take my picture. He listened. Go me. Smudge out.

A friend is wondering about Mr Smudge's breed

(apart from part-Balrog, of course).

Main Coon? Norwegian Forest cat? What do people think?

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

Really interesting snippet from his latest update:

The score for Film 2 is going to be terrific. Last year, we were a little frustrated because we had to revisit so many of the LotR themes - The Shire, Rivendell, Galadriel, Gollum, and the Ring - we did this because I'm wanting these 3 Hobbit movies to have great unity with the Rings films in design, wardrobe, story and music, so it meant when "An Unexpected Journey" had to acknowledge what had gone before.
But this time around, apart from a couple of Ring moments, it's all new: Beorn, Mirkwood, The Woodland Realm, Laketown, Bard and Smaug all give Howard the chance to write brand new themes, and he's knocking it out of the park!

The music update is here.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

That is classic the latest post. And it shows how truly difficult a task it is to work with scale like he has had two. 13 dwarves, plus Dain et.al, plus a hobbit (smaller yet) and men and elves. I can't imagine how difficult it's been. Love that shot he just posted.

Finally

getting some good info about the series. Not sure about Dwalin's armor and Thorin's outfit if they're supposed to be in TBoFA. For some reason, I'm expecting the dwarf lords to be decked out and dressed to the hilt after visiting the Royal Armory. Maybe the Thorins took their armor off for lunch.

Really glad that Pete thinks Shore's score is great! Don't like all the green screen though.

Quote PJ,

Quote
We're battling on, shooting Thorin in a climatic duel for the third movie. Finishing the entire shoot with the end of his story. Fitting I guess. It's obviously not the very end of the movie itself. That scene was actually shot about 2 years ago. But it's tough emotional stuff to punch on with into the night. Keeps us on our toes until the bitter end!

So, old Bilbo with Ian Holm perhaps to end the tale?

Well, let's see.

I can't think of anything much smaller than the dwarves to need a large scale actor for, because he's already in the right proportion to be next to Hobbits, and next to wizards and Elves they either use Richard kneeling, etc. or they would use a smaller scale double. So, then my guess would be....

Large Thorin (Richard Armitage) = Thorin with other dwarves, Bilbo and in close ups with wizards and Elves
Medium Thorin = Thorin vs large orcs or scale shots with wizards and Elves and Men
Small Thorin = Thorin with Beorn, or maybe even Smaug? Shocked

My guess is Beorn

Armitage is already to-scale with Freeman and the other dwarves. Given that Smaug is a completely CG creation (and can be made to whatever size for scaling purposes), there would be absolutely no need for a mini Thorin in scenes with Smaug.

Thorin standing next to a man that's supposed to be 10-feet tall, on the other hand..

Yes, good point.

They shouldn't really need a scale for Smaug (or for Beorn in bear form, for that matter), so HumanBeorn it is. And from the size of BearBeorn in the trailer the scale seems about right, assuming he's roughly the same mass in both bear and human form.

Me too

Seeing the appendices for LOTR. He kept on going with pick ups and adding more scenes.
I can't imagine PJ just going to edit both movies now and not wanting to add some scenes or something. Maybe all could be done digitally. But I have a feeling we might see another get together next year, to get some extra scenes done.
Also from what I read from actors (John Callen/Oin wrote a wonderful good bye yesterday to fans) they all see the entire period from March 2011 till now as one period. So this wouldn't be a pick up, just a late planned filming moment. Which could mean we could get an actual pick up next year.

Yes, the part about the music is interesting

Whatever you think of his movies, you have to admit that PJ is just great to the fans of those movies. What a gift! I was too tired to stay up last night to read the whole thing but it was fascinating.

About the music, PJ goes on to say:

The score for Film 2 is going to be terrific. Last year, we were a little frustrated because we had to revisit so many of the LotR themes - The Shire, Rivendell, Galadriel, Gollum, and the Ring - we did this because I'm wanting these 3 Hobbit movies to have great unity with the Rings films in design, wardrobe, story and music, so it meant "An Unexpected Journey" had to acknowledge what had gone before.

This is how I see AUJ and probably its sequels, not so much as conventional prequels to PJ’s LotR but almost as continuations, though not literally of course. AUJ starts just hours before FotR began and its action takes place well in the past, but it is a look back from the time of LotR. So the intro with Bilbo and Frodo was absolutely necessary as was, I suppose, the LotR music and other nods to the trilogy. Other approaches could have been taken but PJ chose to tie AUJ to its predecessors in this fashion. I like it.

Though I love the film score as it is and was happy to revisit the old themes, I rather prefer the soundtrack CD. I hope that the score of DoS and its original soundtrack are more in sync.

Because this would mean azog is killed by thorin, who is killed by bolg who Is killed by beorn

Hmm. It's possible, obviously, but if I had to bet I'd still put my money on Bennett...

Doesn't seem to have quite a protruding enough jaw for Stevens

Though I think he already mentioned on Twitter that he was done shooting.

Maybe a random Orc then?

Because what I said was dumb, Conan Stevens is the killer of thorin, not the other way around,.... Besides now we know that thorin dies, and fili and kili, we even see thorin gravelly wounded

I really hope there's a "Last days of filming" on the TABA DVD/Blu-ray

Like the one for ROTK with PJ just doing the same shot over and over again, obviously not wanting it to end.

And all the different actors crying Frown

The Green Tint

And yet PJ's fanboys would continue to say that Peter Jackson doesn't have one moment to spare to personally address the issue of The Green Tint in the FOTR EE Blu-ray indiscriminately laid on top of the entire film - apart from the separate matter of the new color grading - and admit there was a mistake.

Peter and Warner Brothers - what are you hiding from, and why?

I would totally watch 'The Penguins of Middle-earth'. Anyone else with me? Laugh

"I had forgotten that. It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is all grown strange. Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields; and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark! How shall a man judge what to do in such times?"

Clearly, they are wrong. It is so amazing and touching that PJ shared this with all of us - including all those pictures, too. Wow. What a wonderful man. Heart We love you, PJ.

Even so, I'm over here in a puddle of tears at the thought that this the end of cinematic Middle-earth... Unsure

It's done.

I just know that after the last credits roll on the last film, I'll feel so sad that I have no more of PJ's glorious Middle-earth movies to look forward to. The end of an era. As one poster put it, "Don't be sad they're over; be glad they were made." For me, it's both.

Emerging from my sulk, just to say…

…that I think this is a Maine Coone, which is probably descended from similar cats that originated in northern Europe, possibly belonging to Vikings (hence, perhaps, the similarity to the Norwegian Forest Cat breed). It could be larger than PJ's Pugs.

Wonderful account of last day of shooting from PJ – the man is an absolute star and I very much appreciate his efforts to keep everyone informed about progress on the film.

I see chain mail

peeking out beneath the 3-Thorins' coats, and around the arms. Dwalin looks chin-to-shin chain as well, so maybe that is the Bo5A armor. I rather like the look myself - especially with the broad shoulder guards on both guys, and it does give them the advantage of maneuverability, so I hope to see them leaping and swinging about. Let the elves have their fancy-shmancy filigrees and elegant overlapping weaves of scale mail. These are working-dwarves, they wear what they need to get the job done :).

Hats off...

To P.J and his amazing crew/team. Has there ever been a director so fan-oriented?
I admire his passion for the material and love for cinema (yes including the liberties he takes). People may say the thrid movie was a cash-grab, but I have no doubt in my mind he legitimately wanted to give us all he could before bowing out of Middle Earth.

I am confident the final two film's will have a nice balance of Bilbo moments and other epicness; which is exactly what I wanted to see in a Hobbit 'movie'.

The last, possibly the most exhausting, emotional day of the whole shoot, he can't sleep for thinking and worrying over it, and he says to himself "I think I'll blog all day today". HeartHeartHeartCool

Me too!

I find myself wistful and sad somewhat knowing it's coming to and end, but not just yet. We do have a year and a half yet to savor the wonderful movies SPJ has created and I can't wait to experience them. I will cry I know at the end of TABA and most likely all the way through. Not ashamed to say it. I will miss my visual journey to Middle Earth and thank goodness PJ took the time and effort to involve the fans the way he did. He is an exceptional man and human being. Not many out there.

Clarifying

I see how you could get that impression that wasn't where I was going with it though. I will be sad that the journey on the big screen will be over and that the story as far as PJ's films is finished. I will most definitely still enjoy them on DVD and also of course Professor Tolkien's wonderful works which I continue to enjoy. I will just be sad that the film portion has been finished is all.

In Rivendell

In Reply To

Quote
Large Thorin (Richard Armitage) = Thorin with other dwarves, Bilbo and in close ups with wizards and Elves
Medium Thorin = Thorin vs large orcs or scale shots with wizards and Elves and Men
Small Thorin = Thorin with Beorn, or maybe even Smaug?

That would be my guess as well

In Rivendell whne Elrond and the elves ride in on horses and surrounded the dwarves they were using the small scale doubles there
