Can it really be 14 years?

My mind boggles at the fact that it's been 14 years since, looking online for information about the new live-action version of "The Lord of the Rings," I came across theonering net and never got away again. None of us had heard of Peter Jackson, so we all ran out and rented everything we could by him. No horror fan, I was terrified of what he'd do to my favorite book until I rented "Heavenly Creatures."

We didn't even know who was going to be cast in the movie yet, and the next year was rife with rumors and vehement debates over Uma Thurman as Galadriel, Ethan Hawke as Faramir, Sean Connery as Gandalf, and Bruce Willis as Boromir. When a casting was confirmed the debates were hardly less spirited; while everyone agreed that Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, and Cate Blanchett were inspired choices, many feared that the young Americans Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, and Liv Tyler would fall down on the job, and most of the rest of the cast were people we'd never even heard of. Orlando Bloom had had only a walk-on part in one movie at that point. I myself felt that Stuart Townsend was too young and too short for Aragorn.

I don't have time to compose a mathom, but I read an article this morning about how singing in and listening to a choir is good for your mind and body in just about every way, and so I thought I'd offer up this recording of my choir singing Eric Whitacre's "Seal Lullaby." The recording quality is not great (sorry - we're never hiring that guy again!) but the song itself is.

Happy Anniversary :)

Hope you celebrate somehow!

Happy TORNiversary to a most admirable and excellent Hobbit!

Those years do fly by, don't they? And what a great 14 years it has been. :)

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Happy TORniversary!

And thanks for that beautiful mathom. I've listened to a video of that song that you posted in the past, I think. It's so lovely.

I remember when I came aboard, a couple of years after you, you were one of the people who made me feel so welcome. I remember specifically making an effort to remember your nickname after you said something kind to me. I had no idea at the time that eventually we would meet in person. I still have the necklace I made from the sea glass you gave me. It's been great knowing you all these years.

A joyful Tornniversary wished for you Anneal!

I am glad you are here among us, and yes that piece was lovely indeed. I truly enjoyed that:).

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted."
— J.R.R. Tolkien

Happiness: money matters, but less than we think and not in the way that we think. Family is important and so are friends, while envy is toxic -- and so is excessive thinking. Beaches are optional. Trust is not. Neither is gratitude. - The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner as summarized by Lily Fairbairn. And a bit of the Hobbit reading thrown in never hurts. - NottaSackville

Mind-boggling indeed

and wonderful! Fourteen years ago I had neither read LotR nor an inkling that it was to be filmed, and not even an internet connection, and you were already in the thick of things, as it were! What a rich fourteen years they have been for you, TORn-wise, and I hope otherwise as well (having only been around for the last two of them so I don't really know)! May there be many more of them! Smile

Thanks for letting those of us who are comparative newbies have a glimpse at those long-ago days (and especially rumours --- those casting possibilities now seem totally unreal, the worst of them certainly being Bruce Willis, dear me!).

And thank you for your music mathom, it's now in my laptop and I can listen to it whenever I need soothing Smile --- merci bien!

'Goodness gracious, you really are a messie!' 'Oh no, I'm not, these are all just mathoms...'

Hard to believe it's been that long! So much water has flowed under the proverbial bridges since then, yet TORn keeps on going unchanged (almost! -- new board format aside) and continues to keep us all connected. Here's to many happy returns of your TORniversary!
