Fellowship Blu Ray Extended Green Tint

I understand that this has been discussed a lot but I can't seem to find anything recent, so my question is, does the FOTR still have a green tint?

I never had a blu ray player before now so I never had to worry about it, but now that I do, I want them in blu-ray....

The newest edition (singles with fancy covers) has it repaired

But for example the golden trilogy box has the tint.

I think that box has the tinted one too

But you really can't tell anything is too wrong (especially if you would not have heard about It) so buy the box just to save money. :p

JWPlatt. I am out of the loop with regards to which release has which tint to it, but it is of great interest to JWPlatt so he may (or may not) be able to advise you a little bit more.

I can't remember any other thread discussing whether it had been removed or not. (Though, JWPlatt didn't seem to think it had been removed in an August 2012 thread.)

All editions are the same.

I don't know how the rumor got started that the standalone release was any different from the disc in the box set, but it is NOT true. Every released version of FotR EE has exactly the same transfer as all the others.

the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

Ha! It has indeed been discussed a lot, sometimes heatedly, but the sad fact of the matter is that the one person who could have contributed something worthwhile to the debate, a certain Peter Jackson, has elected not to and therefore it has dragged on without resolution for this long...

Whether you notice it (and whether, if you do, it bothers you) I've no way of predicting. Is there any way you could rent it first?

PS Personally, I find it quite grating, not permanently throughout the entire film, but enough at certain points to find myself tutting and shaking my head! Had Towers and King undergone the same aesthetic make-over, I dare say I'd find it less so...

As I said in my private message to to TitanicXB, I don't think any of the releases of the blu ray Fellowship EE are without the green tent, and I don't think that they ever will be. After looking at the trailer for the desolation of Smaug, with its blue snow, think that deep blue/green tint is the way Jackson wants to be headed for these movies now. But as Kendalf said, he hasn't been very vocal about this, so we don't know for sure.

The impact of this tint is very subjective. It bothers me a great deal because it makes the whole picture appear to be darker, which I don't like, especially in the Shire scenes. But there are many for whom this is not a problem. If at all possible, you should get hold of a copy of Fellowship by renting it first. You may be one of the lucky ones who are not bothered by this, and you can purchase it later with no regrets.

I think you're absolutely right, Patty. The new Fellowship matches the look of these prequels much more closely than it does its own companion pieces Towers and King. Quite why Jackson didn't apply his new palette to the entire trilogy is beyond me.

What a shame that, then, in a year or so's time, we'll have four films looking one way and two films looking another Frown

I was away and replied to TITANICXB before I found this thread. I think Kendalf is the more reasoned "expert" in the matter of The Green Tint, but I have watched it closely with interest and a sense of outrage at Peter Jackson for not giving his audience an honest, forthright and direct response to their concerns - as if he were in hiding about it or feels he is superior to fan concerns (won't dignify it with an answer).

Here's my PM to TITANICXB:

Sorry for the late reply. I was camping for a week without technology - often a much more fulfilling experience than a desk and monitor.

I know of no edition that corrects The Green Tint. The single releases are from the same master as before. I believe the thought that the singles would be corrected comes from "irrational exuberance." Neither Jackson nor Lesnie have personally addressed the issue independently from the new color grading despite hearsay from "close associates." Until they do address it personally, I doubt it will be admitted and corrected.

I do hope it is, at least, quietly changed with some euphemistic excuse with the ultimate Middle-earth release of all six movies in a single edition sometime after The Hobbit concludes its run.

Only the 'green tint' FOTR EE looks nothing like AUJ

The colour grade for the FOTR EE is definitely not a creative decision, there's no doubt in my mind. AUJ has a perfect colour grade with no ridiculously pushed tints of any shade. Why would they want FOTR to look bad (which it kind of does in the current EE form)?

Luckily this is not the ultimate edition of the film so they will go back and redo it, for the complete Middle-earth saga set.

The new colour-grading that lies underneath the green tint is what I was referring to, sorry, and it, to my mind, very closely resembles the look of AUJ indeed.

As an aside, I would also disagree with you over AUJ not having any "ridiculously pushed tints". I lost count of the number of wholly unnatural sunrises and sunsets on display and the cliche teal and orange combo, whilst certainly not as prevalent as I'd feared pre-release, was certainly present in places. Just re-watch the prologue. How many times can you spot orangey-yellow in combination with tealy-blue?

To be honest, I was never sold on the color grading done in the theatrical release of the movie. I didn't mind the oversaturation of Hobbiton but I didn't like the grading done for Rivendell, Lothlorien, or Ithilien.

Nice article. This also well known as The Tealization of Hollywood. And it's true - all these films today that are jumping on the bandwagon will look dated like bad 1970s hairstyles.

It is so well known and infamous that I don't understand how bright people in the industry, such as Peter Jackson, cannot see it as the inartistic fad that it is. I guess they're all still too fond of The Emperor's Clothes.

Yep.

For all its other faults, which really aren't an issue to me personally, the theatrical Blu-ray of Fellowship looks a lot better , as it is without that oppressive tint. However there is so much content missing from the story that it still can't be a replacement for the extended Blu-ray with the green tint.

What is all this about? Is it to help mask the CGI which will unavoidably look dated and inferior in a few years with assumed technological advances? If so, it's a bad trade off to me.

i really meant it in just a logical, empirical way. it's very true that white text on black backgrounds diminishes comprehension, increases eyestrain, etc. it's not good for reading.

also just to say, i in no way meant to imply that the owner of the blog (or anyone who uses this palette) is too concerned with being trendy or the like. yes, i was being a bit cheeky, but it was not my intent to be insulting.
