New Version: Azog Discussion/Appreciation Thread

I watched AUJ again last evening, and I found myself appreciating the subtleties in Manu Bennett's mo-cap performance, and how perfectly they reflect in the final form of Azog. While his role in the story is a divergence from canon, I found him an intimidating presence with more layers than you would initially believe:

Is that last shot

from when he realises that he has lost his quarry (Thorin)?
I think his facial expression is brilliant there.

I think he's brilliant

Yes, in terms of canon he's out of his timeline - but I still think he makes a powerful presence.

I perfectly agree that his facial expressions are incredibly realistic, so-much-so that sometimes I can't believe this is actually a mo-capped and CGI creation rather than Manu Bennett in costume Laugh... no seriously though, it's wonderful Smile

check out Azog marking thread

I think its a good possibilty Azog and Beorn have a past together.

The stylistic/ritualist facial scars are probably just that but not the big claw scar on hus chest ... its too big

I've always thought that Azog is well realised

I like his body movements, and find he has a more intimidating presence than any of the frozen-faced, prosthetics-laden Orks from LOTR. I also like Azog's deep voice and the fact that he speaks in Orkish. (I did like the way Lurtz was done in FOTR, but thought Orks like Gothmog were just stone-faced looking, and were not intimidating at all.)

I don't care if the book story is not followed exactly – I have easily been able to separate both PJ's Hobbit and his LOTR films from the books, and look on the books and films as two different entities.

Azog is now on my list of favorites!

And that list goes (in order): Frodo, Bilbo, Thorin, Azog, Boromir, and Aragorn. Shows how much of a lasting impression he's made on me. I'm now a complete Azog fanboy, so much that I squee'd like a little schoolgirl when I saw him appear in the DOS trailer.

I adored Azog.

And I fancy myself as a middle earth fanatic. He just fit well and gave some needed action to some slower parts in the book that would have been dull on screen perhaps without him.

Certainly a better non-canon baddy then the last Narnia's evil green fog.

I certainly look forward to him dying.

well.

yazneg and Bolg would have filled those parts with action was it not for Azog.
