“But as a mountain falls and crumbles away, And as a rock is moved from its place; As water wears away stones, And as torrents wash away the soil of the earth; So You destroy the hope of man.” -Job 14:18-19 I believe there is also a Scandinavian proverb about how the ocean is more powerful than the mountain, but I’m too lazy to look it up. 1. What say you on the symbolism of the Ents (embodying the protectors of nature) using water a great and powerful natural force, to quench the fires and destroy the dark industry of Isengard? There it is obvious as day. The wall with indents that make it look like a cog and the spire that makes it look like an axle. This is the most basic of man’s tools: a wheel. And then there are the orcs’ treadmills, wheels within wheels. This means something, but one really shouldn’t discuss the Maaseh Merkabah casually. Bad things might happen, like, say, spontaneously bursting into flame. 2. Do you take much notice of the special effects that PJ employs in the trilogy as a whole? They’re nice enough. If one notices them the first time around it means the story isn’t gripping enough. By the umpteenth time one is looking at things the director didn’t intend anyone to be directly looking at so of course one is going to notice imperfections. That’s the bane of multiple viewings. Nothing is perfect. 3. Can you spot the flaming Ent? :D Yes, a nice reference to Hagigah 13b where someone who recognizes the true meaning of the symbolism of “wheels within wheels” is consumed by fire. Jackson has said that his favorite of Tolkien’s characters were the Ents so I can see where he would be soft-hearted enough to go against canon and let Beechbone live. Thanks for the discussion!
