Because...?

Doesnt PJ have his hands full with TinTin and Lovely bones? I would think he has to get those out of the way before he can direct and work on the Hobbit. New Line probably want to go ahead and get this train rolling and so they will have him produce and find a director that PJ approves of maybe?

Come on Sam Raimi!!

I want a Bruce Campbell cameo!!

Who's writing the script(s)?

Quote
Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of “The Hobbit” release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011.

If they can't get a good script together in eighteen months, will they delay filming?

LOTR films

How long did it take for PJ to come up with the script for LOTR?

I know there was a re-write in there because he moved from studio to studio..but is there some kind of time we know of on comparing how long it took him to do LOTR compares to the Hobbit?

I don't think there would be such a HUGE scheduling problem ...

... with PJ directing. Sure he's got Lovely Bones to finish ... but I think they've completed (or have nearly completed) principal photography and are well on their way to post-production. Lots of directors shuttle between post-production on one project and pre-production on the next project simultaneously. Especially since Lovely Bones is so much smaller in scale than The Hobbit will surely be. Besides, the mountain of design work needed for locations, characters and costumes for The Hobbit, it should be a while before the director would be needed full time.

As for TinTin, I believe the deal PJ has with Speilberg is for each of them to direct one of the films in the trilogy (along with third director to be named later) ... so who's to say PJ won't be directing the third TinTin film after The Hobbit films wrap?

awesome!

this is so awesome! I'm just happy that at least Peter Jackson is going to be involved, even if he's not the director. Just having his creative input will make a difference in the film.
any ideas on who will be playing the role of Bilbo?

Theres some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and its worth fighting for.

Also ...

I would also not be a bit surprised if PJ's team had already gotten a head start on the script and design work back when they were still friendly with NL in the days before the lawsuit ... back when it seemed their version of a Hobbit movie would be a fait acomplit. I seem to remember hearing that some preliminary Smaug designs had been done back then. You know ... just in case!

Since Peter's heading it

you can bet your lembas Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have already been working on it. ;)

There's really not going to be any comparison to the timeline for writing a screenplay. The Hobbit is shorter and more of a linear storyline (not several directions at once), unless we follow Gandalf to the White Council meeting he left the Company to attend. THAT WOULD BE SUHWHEET!

Construction the bridge between the two stories will be the trick. But I can feel it in my bones that our NZ team has already addressed that and have just been waiting to hit the ground and go with this!

This is gonna be great!! :D

I would worry about that

I'd rather have a director's full attention on a project of this scope rather than have him working on so many projects at once. Not that I'm saying PJ shouldn't direct, just that I'd like to see his plate cleaned off while he's working on *our* movie Smile

Agreed ...

It would be ideal if he had nothing else in the hopper. But in shooting three of the biggest and most complicated films ever made at the same time ... I think PJ has certainly proven that he can multi-task!

And I think, having been through this once already, the whole crew will be better prepared for the rigors of this kind of production. They know exactly what to expect and will be able to prepare better for it this time. Since they know what's coming, they'll be able to better manage resources and time.

What work by Boyens, Jackson and/or Jackson...

might make for the best comparison with the "linear storyline" of The Hobbit? Should we be thinking more of King Kong and Heavenly Creatures than LotR?

And what about this second "sequel" film, which requires creation almost ex nihilo? Will it take longer to adapt a somewhat dialogue-ready, straightforward novel, or to expand tremendously on scraps from Appendix A to LotR?

Hobbiton is still there, they just need to redo the facades and replace the plants! I remember hearing something about Alan Lee working on some things hobbity-related shortly after the eedvds for RotK came out.

Yeah... they've been hanging onto all the mugs and costumes and computer work just waiting for this to finally get sorted out!

The only problem is that they'll have to film Bag End in Peter's back yard where he's got the set ;)

In a way I'm disappointed

in the fact that Peter settled. Does this mean that New Line didn't have to open their books after all? Because that means they're probably paying him less than what they owe him (even if it's a huge amount), and no doubt underpaying many other people too.

I was really hoping the lawsuit would go all the way to a decision by a judge or jury, just to put New Line in their place and hopefully make them less likely to rip people off in the future. Now they'll think it's OK to keep underpaying people.

So I'm *very* happy as a fan that it looks like these movies will get made, but it sickens me to think that all of the money we put into ticket sales and merchandise and so forth might not go to the people who really earned it.

Certainly *major* news in any case. I just tried to submit it to Slashdot and saw that Corvar beat me too it. Duh, I should've guessed he'd already done that. Tongue

Two movies?? :(

AHHHH, FINALLY AN ANNOUNCMENT!!!

"The Hobbit: There" in 2010
"The Hobbit: Back Again" in 2011

Unless they are doing The Hobbit, followed by another story that is a LotR prequel. I guess I would hate it less if they did The Hobbit as one movie, and then did a sequel. Then, I have the option of pretending that the sequel doesn't exist.

But I am really uncomfortable with this whole two-movie thing! One three-hour Hobbit film would be perfectly sufficient!

I'm trying to be optimistic, because Peter Jackson has sure earned that. But I have a bad feeling about this right now.

Poor Tom.

Actually,

I see each of the story lines from LotR as being treated as linear. Frodo and Sam's moved forward on course, as did the Hunters. I'd say what we witness with The Lovely Bones will be very reassuring along with what we've seen with KK and HC.

There's so much information in the back stories, appendices, introductions and Tolkien's other works, I think it'll be easy for them to create the bridge. I have the feeling they (Philippa/Fran/Peter) are going to try and do something very creative and satisfying with that second film. This is THEIR chance to create more Tolkien and finish what I'm sure the Good Professor would have done if he'd had more time.

I just feel like Tolkien's stories are in such safe hands with them. More than anyone else I can think of, anyway. They deserve this opportunity to finish the job. I'm so happy for them :D

The Reading Room will probably discuss "The Hobbit" again...

in March 2009, after the current discussion of The Lord of the Rings concludes. It only takes about four months to discuss The Hobbit, though, so maybe the participants will opt to discuss something else first, to push the discussion closer to the film's appearance. Or maybe it would be possible to work up a discussion of the various LotR errata on which Jackson and co. will draw to create the second film.

I can live with Peter Jackson as the producer.

That means someone else will direct.

But I'm not happy about two films. That gives them too much scope to make up their own stuff and add it to the story. And that's the biggest part of what's wrong with the LOTR movies.

So I will follow this news with the same reserve as I did when LOTR was being made.

Oh Moon, lovely moon, with thy beautiful face,
Careering throughout the boundaries of space,
Whenever I see thee, I think in my mind,
Shall I ever, oh ever, behold thy behind.

Questions that need answering.

Who's writing the script? (Please, for the love of jeebus, let it be Boyens, Jackson and Walsh).

Who's directing?

Is Ian McKellen playing Gandalf? (I won't even see it unless he is)

It is very encouraging to me that they are breaking this story into two movies. There are a ton of characters we need to be familiarized with, and a single, two hour movie wouldn't cut it.

Well, we don't know the specifics of the settlement yet.

I've long had a hunch that PJ would end up accepting a chunk of cash for LOTR, but in return would get the right to an independent audit in case of any dispute over the Hobbit financials. (Well, we will see whether he gained anything in the end.)

Maybe they'll option some of the better fanfiction? "Chance Meeting in Rivendell"? But of course they can't do that, exactly --it wouldn't be fanfiction if people were paid for it (perhaps the boards' resident expert on the subject could weigh in)-- though there probably are ways around the legalities. It would take a major scheduling conflict to keep McKellen away.

He's already said in no uncertain terms that he wants the part if PJ's involved.

All depends on IF ...

there has been settlement ... this case is still underway with dates set etc ...

Nothing much has been said about the 'seetlement' ... so it is a wonder (wonderful Wink), "How did it come to this?" ....

That will possibly be the next big story surrounding this maybe ...

I cant wait for this to take off!!

I'm crying, I'm so happy. :)

What a wicked Christmas present for us all!

Did anyone else notice the comment from PJ that he thanks his 'new friends' at New Line? Talk about a kick in the ankle to Shay! But I'm glad that the people involved decided to be grown-ups about this and get this film under way at last!

I also noticed there was no mention of New Zealand being the film location. That's an interesting omission at a time when they can conclusively say there will be two films, their production timeline and the release dates.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I just hope Peter directs, but even if he doesn't, I can live with executive producer.

He'll have a lot of control that way.

Isn't it unreal!
Tears of joy and relief and anticipation maybe?

New Zealand is Middle-earth ... maybe its just not announced as it seems such an excepted fact ... I cant imagine the bulk of the film being made anywhere else, not with the amount of new studios and production facilities availble now - world class!!

No doubt this will make the TV news tonight!!

Audit rights ...

The sticking point of the lawsuit, though, was that he already had audit rights in his original LOTR contract with NL ... and he invoked that right ... but they simiply said no. That's why he sued them in the first place.

What's interesting to note is that this lawsuit was only about FOTR profits. As I understand it, he would still have the ability to sue NL if they don't open the books and let him see the figures on TTT and ROTK.

But I expect PJ wouldn't have signed on for this new adventure unless there's been a committment from NL to at least attempt some financial transparency!

Exactly.

I had gotten the impression that PJ's lawsuit was at least partly to convince New Line that they couldn't be shady (to anyone, not just PJ) -- that they need to comply with valid audit requests and not try to hide stuff.

If the settlement does require New Line to be more forthcoming with information, that's great. I really hope they didn't just offer higher and higher figures until PJ said yes, because I thought it wasn't just about the money.

Gee, I'd love to be able to read some of these agreements, not even to be nosy but just for my own education about how these things work. I understand why they want to keep things confidential, but it's frustrating to be on the outside wondering what's going on.

Well, well, well

What fun to see the boards so busy!

I'm glad to hear that The Hobbit is underway, although oddly enough, since l love the LotR movie(s), my second reaction (after the big grin and the fist in the air) is caution.

1) This is The Hobbit, not LotR. While I like The Hobbit just fine, it's not LotR. They've done the (excuse me) "good one" already.

2) PJ does have a tendency to excess, exacerbated by the success of LotR. I hope he's able to rein in his worse impulses -- or that Walsh and Boyens will.

3) If I understand it correctly, the second movie is a "bridge" between The Hobbit and LotR, and will be created almost out of whole cloth. Call me cynical, but this is a bit too close to a hubristic milking-the-franchise decision for me to be entirely comfortable with it.

Other than that:

Squeeeeee!

Certainly food for thought ...

Gotta say, you make some good points. I too, prefer LOTR to The Hobbit. I tend to prefer the darker tone and more adult storyline. But there's always a big, fuzzy, warm spot in my heart for The Hobbit.

But I am a SMIDGE nervous about PJ making this movie. I think his impulses ... particularly those inclined toward the "comedic" ... can sometimes be problematic. ESPECIALLY as said impulses pertain to Dwarves. Hopefully Fran and Philippa can keep everything on the straight and narrow ... with the burping/farting/tossing gags kept to an absolute minimum. Hopefully "dignity" will be the watchword here.

(I would be FAR MORE nervous about Sam Raimi in this regard. His comic sensabilities are considerably hokier. Don't get me wrong, I love the Evil Dead movies ... but there's no place for that kind of corny campiness here.)

The "Bridge" concept is intriguing to me. Mostly because we really have no idea how this is going to work. There's a lot of material to comb through ... but can it hold together as a cohesive movie unto itself? Or will it be a feature-length series of theatrically exhibited DVD extras? I, for one, am fascinated to find out.

While ... yes, there is a chance it could end up being a complete vanity project ... in my mind PJ & Co. have certainly earned this opportunity!

Hmm . . .

I think this is an interesting and entirely plausible theory. Though as you note, we have no indication of its truthfulness.

Even if some random person at New Line did in fact say this, it may or may not have any relevance to the latest negotiations by those who are actually doing the negotiating. In a big company like New Line, I wouldn't assume that anyone in the company necessarily knows what's going on in another part of the company.

Some new info...

... (or should I say "alleged", since it has not been confirmed) from a poster over at TORc:

Quote
Lidless said:

Well, just got of the phone from my sauce at Newline, who I'm happy to say is now much higher up the corporate ladder.. I can tell you the following:

1 PJ and Bob Shaye have come to an agreement over their royalty battle.

2 PJ and Fran Walsh it seems will have little if no input into this and are just lending their names. The director and the screenwriters have not been chosen. It's possible they might be the scriptwriters or have script supervision, but it's unlikely, albeit possible.

3 No cast/cameo decisions have been made whatsoever, though they expect to be talking to Ian McKellen between now and the end of January.

4 No decision has been made as to the tone of the movie, given how The Hobbit is more 'child-friendly'. The choice of director should be a clue.

5 Neither has any decision been made between 2D and 3D..

6 The entire Hobbit will be contained in the first film. The sequel will tie the end of that movie with the beginning of LOTR.

Interesting, if this is true... if they do make the Hobbit in one movie and the second one as a tie-in, what would they call it? The White Council? I would LOVE to have a second movie showing all the stuff that happened behind-the-scenes of The Hobbit and events between the Hobbit and the War of the Ring... Aragorn as Thorongil in Rohan and Gondor... Ecthelion... The White Council, of course... Gandalf's trip into Dol Guldur... more backstory of how Sauron came to be the malevolent b*****d we love to hate... an extended battle of the Last Alliance (they could finally use all those Gil-galad & Elendil shots they had to cut out of both fighting Sauron)... Imagine! All those lovely extras Peter has stashed away in the vault... it would certainly be much better to have them inserted into a new movie than have another extended edition of LOTR DVDs.

*rubbing hands gleefully*

I didn't think I would feel this excited (especially considering a whole movie full of shortstuffs bobbing along without some separate Long Leg people to keep me from feeling like I'm watching Snow White is not my idea of fun)... but I'm starting to get into the spirit! Smile

A silly Idea..

Well, we have The Hobbit.

As for the Sequel, maybe this is just me, but I wouldnt mind having some of the back story filled in prior to LOTR...

something like perhaps The White Council...or a chance to go into the story of the elves like Glorfindel, and how Aragorn came to be.. a chance to get more backstory that could be taken from the other books...

honestly..just reasons to get the original group back together one more time...I wouldnt think it would be that hard to get that group to do another 2 or 3 years of filming..lol..

I noticed the absence of NZ too

It rather worries me. Then again...it's far too early to worry. Now is the time to celebrate!

It seems logical to most of us, I suppose, that ME continue to be in NZ, but I wonder if PJ will have to bend to Hollywood druthers this time around. Surely he's got to be in a better position to call his own shots then he was last time. Of course, such comments assume he wants to film in NZ again, but it's hard to imagine he wouldn't.

It all depends ...

... on what's legally available to them.

There's so much I'd love to see in the Bridge movie (especially given what will surely be more of Weta's astounding creature, location and costume design work) ... but honestly, I'm not enough of a scholar of the books to know what they can actually use.

I love the notion of the rise of Sauron and the White Council material ... but is that enough to hang a whole movie on?

Because I don't think I need to see is a movie filled with nothing but character origins. (That's what Phantom Menace was, and we all saw how that turned out!) Where characters come from isn't nearly as interesting as where they're going. It's like getting a long first act of a play and never getting the climax and conclusion. If they can weave together a satisfying narrative from the various bits and pieces, then more power to them. But if it's just two and a half hours filled with trivia ... well, that stuff's best left for DVD extras.

I can't wait to find out!

Well, I'm not "in hysterics", Xo,

as you put it on the home page. Just sitting here having lunch. ;o)

It's good to know the studios intend to make a Hobbit movie in the near future. Yet there's little in the press release to give us much of a clue as to what the films will be like. I think we've speculated on the rumors here before that Jackson will produce, and we've come to the conclusion that it can mean a great deal or very little.

While I mostly liked what Jackson did visually to bring Middle-earth to life there were many changes to plot and characters that I disliked. So, even if we hear he will do some directing and writing, I still don't know if I'll get unusually emotional about it. I will watch it with interest, though.

WOOOOO HOOOOOO!

Its about time! I had a funny feeling that Zaentz jumping into the fray with a lawsuit of his own would have some kind of impact for the better!!
My personal guess is that PJ will wind up (A) getting to choose the director he wants to work with (and probably the 2nd, 3rd, etc.-unit directors as well) and
(B) that PJ will have a great deal of creative input on directing/creative decisions. I also am betting that he, Fran and Phillipa will write (and re-re-re write) the scripts for "The Hobbit" and "The Segue" films.
Yes!!

"Lending their names"

If this is true, that Jackson and Walsh are just "lending their names" to this project, will this be satisfactory to Ian McKellen, et al, as well as to the fans?
Nobody else on this thread has mentioned this, but there was a post on ToRN yesterday about Saul Zaentz suing New Line over a proper accounting of the receipts from LoTR. I wonder if PJ decided that Mr. Zaentz's lawsuit relieved him of the necessity of pursuing his own legal action?
Edit: I see labingi_maura and I had our minds on the same track, and he/she beat me by three minutes!

I'm no fan of Jackson's work, but there's no need to jeer at gramma's enthusiasm. Why not, in response to the root thread, explain why you feel this way?

how much I dislike the Lord of the Rings movies (I think they're horrible translations of the books, not in the spirit of Tolkien at all) and even King Kong was horrible, I'm not the least bit happy about this news. So considering my heavy dislike of the movies and PJ more specifically, and to see so many people jumping for joy thinking its the best thing ever, is frustrating.

But then again the alternative, Sam Raimi isn't any better.

What about Alan Lee, John Howe?

It was hard for me to see all the changes from the books, but I excepted them, because the look and feel of Meddle-earth was so real and their vision was much better than my own. The movies would not have been anything near as great as they were without Alan Lee and John Howe. Their posters and art work were pinned to the wall as Pete, Fran and later Philippa wrote the scripts.

Lots of people don't like the LotR movies.

Of course, lots more people do like them. But the largest group has no opinion whatsoever, never having seen them.

In Reply To
how can anyone not like the Lord of the Rings movies? Their amazing! In my opinion, the best movies of all time, for ever! what about them don't you like?

Not one scene holds up to the book?

Characters like Aragorn, Frodo, Gimli, Faramir, Legolas, Theoden and Denethor aren't even close to the characters of the books?

Insulting ideas like Elves making it to Helms Deep, Arwen dying, Elrond journeying to Dunhurrow, Aragorn hating Men, Faramir taking Frodo to Osgiliath...just to name a few.

yeah but...

you have to look past that, and be happy for how good the movies are, and thankful for how bad they good have been but weren't.

I really hope that Alan Lee is involved, as well as Howard Shore, and Weta Workshop and Digital.

Theres some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and its worth fighting for.

but thats impossible to do. Because all that stuff I dislike is so major you can't look past it. I also don't like the idea of settling for what we got because it could have been worse.

Yes it could have been worse, just look at anadaptation of LOTR by John Boormanhttp://www.rottentomatoes.com/...wthread.php?t=497686

But so many of the changes were so unessacary, it was just PJ and crew changing stuff because they think they could improve Tolkiens works, which is insulting.

Having been a massive

fan of the books for over 36 years, I agree that a lot of liberty was taken in adapting the book to film; but this is Jackson's telling of the story and not meant to BE the book.

I respect your opinion of this as a lover of Tolkien and his works more than I can express... but I do regret that you can find no joy in this adaptation. I'm not at all meaning to be condescending... sincerely! I see these films as part of the evolution of Tolkien's works; and so many people have been brought to the purity of the reading who would never have known about them otherwise. I think the Professor would be happy about that.

Gramma, speaking of that..

Daniel, the wonderful Frodo you met at both DragonCon and at the Indy moot, would never have read the books if not for the movies. He had no interest in even the movies until, as he says, he was "dragged kicking and screaming" to see FOTR by one of his best friends.

He started reading the books after that, and he believes that they ( literally ) saved his life.

I believe that!

And I've heard many others say the same thing. I believe those films brought that story to life at a time when it was needed. Just after 911 and during a social time where so many feel powerless and overwhelmed by the world/life demands. The Lord of the Rings is pure escapism to a world that feels so familiar and honest.

I'm so glad Fro-dan's friend ignores kicking and screaming ;)

That's

an interesting assumption - that the changes were made because the writers thought they were "better". I think it's unfounded. From what I've heard said by all three, that was far from being the case.

The LOTR scripts went through a long and complicated process of being shopped around as a two-movie deal which they couldn't get anyone to consider. Some studios offered them a deal if they'd cut it to one, which they refused, and then once New Line gave them a green light for three movies they had to re-expand and there was no time for a complete rewrite.

The script was, in fact, in perpetual rewrite through the whole filming process. In an ideal world, they would have had all the time in the world to sit down and write the script to perfection before shooting, but no movie is actually made in such a situation. They've said many times that the rewrites kept getting closer to the book, and the closer they got, the better it worked. I just don't see the attitude you're assuming there at all.

While I sympathize with those who were disappointed in the results, and agree that these movies are far from perfect, they are also light years better than they so easily could have been. And I say that as someone who has been here since 1999 and read every set report, news story and rumor about the production as it happened. You don't have to rejoice about this news, but you might want to send up a little prayer of thanks that you didn't have to suffer through Tom Cruise as Aragorn, or Xenarwen. It really could have been sooooo much worse! Wink

It had better be because

it's just a foregone conclusion. They have to know that there will be a massive outcry if they don't.

Well

What news :)

I'm glad PJ is onboard producing, and even if we don't have a director as yet; i'm convinced PJ and co will find a suitable choice.

At this stage, it is hard to tell exactly what role PJ will have as a producer, i.e. how much involvement he will have, but i'm sure PJ will want an active involvement with the project; ensuring it retains a degree of continuity with the previous films, at least design wise.

A new director on board may bring an interesting visual style to the piece, but i doubt he/she will want to stray too far from the established style of PJ's LOTR movies; in both the interests of continuity, but also to please fans (well most of us).

I can't wait to hear what added developments will spring up around the project, but i think it is safe to say one thing.

Bring on 2010! Smile

Boyens...

says at least once that some part of the films (Boromir's death, I think) improves on the books -- at least, so I read on these boards, not having listened to the commentaries. So while I would agree that the filmmakers did not generally disregard Tolkien's work because they thought they could do better, they may have occasionally thought so. But then, almost no one who frequents these boards, even the stauchest Reading Room contributor, feels that there are no flawed passages in Tolkien's book (or in any long, great work).

PJ's Back...

While I am DEEPLY dismayed that Peter Jackson is involved in the production of a Hobbit film, at least he is not "directing". Hopefully, he will enlist a truly great director (Peter Weir was a superb idea bandied about a few months ago) and not assign this to one of his WETA people.

Loooooong sigh...why couldn't they just leave the book alone????

Why?

What about 30 Days of Night bodes well for The Hobbit? What about Army of Darkness bodes ill? (Isn't that one partly a period piece, unlike Raimi's other work, and thus at least set semi-appropriately for The Hobbit?) Since Jackson & co. borrowed one of Gollum's best-known scenes from Raimi's presentation of Willem Defoe's character, why do you feel that Spider-Man spells trouble?

i apologise if my post was not in direct reply also, i just felt like expressing my views on this new development.

However regarding book to film translation, i believe the films followed the books as well as they could do, whilst fufilling the requirments of a sucessful film narrative.

I guess there is more to say on it, but if i went into more discussion it would probably take up a page or so lol.

This is true

And, to be honest, I think there are a few spots where the film does improve on the books -- by showing us Boromir's death and the attack on Isengard, for example, rather than having these scenes happen off stage. But I don't think PJ, Boyens, and Walsh's motive was to improve on the books because they disliked the books and intended to insult either Tolkien and his fans. On the contrary, if they hadn't liked the books (and realized that there was an audience ready to be tapped) they wouldn't have risked as much as they did to make the movies.

What they were doing was adapting the books to a different medium, where showing rather than telling is vital. Sometimes they went too far into screenwriting cliche -- setting Faramir up as more of an obstacle to Frodo's quest, for example. But they had to do quite a balancing act, trying to preserve the feel of the story and please the fans, and at the same time turn out a commercially successful film that would repay the studio's investment.

Whether any one of us likes the adaptation or not -- and every one of us has his or her own example of places that succeeded and places that didn't -- the books are not diminished in any way by it.

Agreed

I think they were able to deliver a different experiance for the big screen that showed you areas of the book that were not covered, and in the process delivered something slightly different but just as good and exciting, and i might add this is a great way of using the tools of cinema to be able to illustrate the book.

Howard Shore.

I seem to remember their was some kind of falling out with him and PJ about Kong. I hope this is not the case, because he was so instrumental (sorry about the pun.) in the emotional appeal of the movies for me. So here’s to keeping my fingers crossed that he signs onto The Hobbit.

RE: Howard Shore

I don't believe it was a "falling out" as much as a creative disagreement over the music for Kong.
We can't know for sure of course, but i believe they are still good friends, and i imagine PJ will want Shore to do the music for The Hobbit, his music is such a rich and vital part of the movies, i couldn't imagine them without it.

You're absolutely right, Lily ...

No matter if you love or hate the movies ... (I'm solidly on the "love" side of that particular fence, but I understand that folks have differing tastes) ... you have to realize that one is not the same as the other. The films are different animals than the books. They are separate unique entities, created in separate mediums to achieve separate goals and satisfy separate needs.

If you enjoyed the movies, that's great. But if you hated them, well, the books will still be there on your shelf, unmolested and unaltered, long after the movies have come and gone from the multi-plex. The thing you love will remain pure and undiminished no matter what happens.

Which I find to be of great comfort!

(By the by, when I say "you," I'm not meaning you specifically. It's more of a general populace "you!" Sorry if it came across that way!)Smile

Top 5 directors to make "The Hobbit"

1. Peter Jackson (Obviously)
2. Sam Raimi (A perfect choice)
3. Gore Verbinski (Great with SFX, can do comedy, drama and horror)
4. Andrew Adamson (Background in SFX, good at many things)
5. Brian Singer (Forget "Superman Returns", everything else he's done is great)

NO, the point of my boycott was always as stated on the Web site

Which was - to get New Line and Jackson to talk and keep Jackson involved.

http://www.dpsinfo.com/boycottnewline/

(Now an archive site! Yes!)

Jackson MIGHT still direct, but keeping him in the producer's chair pretty much guarantees the right kind of scripts, direction and production. It pretty much guarantees Weta's intense involvement.

I just hope PJ can get everyone back.

For this to work he needs to get WETA, Lee, Howe, Shore, Dan Hennah, Ngila Dickson and Alex Funke to sign onto the film. And I can’t imagine Middle-earth being anywhere but New Zealand. Without these key people I don’t see how he can come to anywhere near the quality of LOTR.

May your beer be laid under an enchantment of surpassing excellence for seven years!

Interesting, about the second film

I mean, how in the world are they going to do that? Will it be the White Council? How are they going to expand on 60 years between the two pieces without making a pile of crap? I would be so very disappointed if the Hobbit and its sequel turned out to be, well, bad.

A few things, though:
*WETA HAS to be involved.
*New Zealand is the filming place. End of story.
*Howard Shore FTW.

And for goodness sakes, get back all the old guys (and perhaps some new talent) who worked on LOTR. The sets, the costumes, the languages... fantastic.

The script just has to be good. And here's for hoping they choose a decent cast. Though I wonder how they'll deal with the number of dwarves and if they'll decide to make it smaller. Ooh boy.

you're always so logical in your musings about the Hobbit. Better than me for i'm still. in coherent. Well good points you've raised about how things are going to be. Howard Shore and Weta coming back are definite musts for i think another Oscars are locks if they are. ;)
But yes, it'll be interesting on who's going to write the script... i hope PJ does it as well too... but not butcher it too badly...

(btw, what is "FTW"--- i always see it and am not sure...) :P

"off stage"

Are there moments where Jackson & co. improved on the books by not showing something? By which I mean not those things that one may guess to have happened (as some viewers propose that the hobbits visited Tom Bombadil between the Ferry and Bree, though there is not one indication of that onscreen) but something that clearly happened both in the book and on screen, but is presented directly in the book and elided on film?

The 17 year age gap

From Bilbo's party and Frodo leaving is certainly something that, while it didn't necessarily improve the books, simply would have not worked well in the movies. Not showing this was a great decision on their part, even if they had to skewer the timeline to make it happen.

Shortening the Entmoot was definitely needed. Hahah, 3 day Entmoot... and, while they completely skewered the geography, I suppose cutting the distance between the Paths of the Dead and the Anduin was also necessary.

Cutting out Fatty probably was a wise decision too, as he really had no role after the first scenes in the first book. As loveable as he is.

That's...

not exactly what I was looking for, which was: anything that happens "offscreen" in the film, but not in the books? I'm looking for an example of reticence in the films.

But as to your ideas:

The 17-year gap could have been shown very easily: Gandalf advises Frodo to keep the Ring safe / cut / Gandalf returns, and in dialogue it's clear that years have passed.

The Entmoot takes three days in the book, but it's three days written off in a few paragraphs, once the hobbits have been introduced to Quickbeam.

Fatty does have a role in the book after the "first scenes". He appears in Chapters 3, 5, 6, 11, and 61. Which doesn't mean that he couldn't be easily cut, I'll grant you.

I wouldn't mind that.

After all, Jack Black has a comic instinct, and I think of Bilbo as a comic character. But I also think of Bilbo as a very uptight British gentleman, which Jack Black is not. John Cleese in A Fish Called Wanda reminds me of Bilbo.

Just throwing my hat in the Ring...

Not to direct, but just to say I'm definitely happy about the development.

I have reservations about how it will turn out, sure. So many variables and really, not a chance that most of us will be happy about how each one is resolved. What is the overall vision and purpose? Who will write the script? Who will direct? That actors, the score, the locations, 2-D or 3-D, the sets, etc.

But I'm generally very happy with the way the LotR films turned out as a whole. I didn't like some of the changes made, particularly some of the character driven changes, but others sat well with me. So until they, whoever "they" actually turns out to be in this case, gives me a reason to believe they will not at least meet the standard set in the first three films, I'm going to be pretty optimistic.

So I'm 10 minutes from a big client meeting

and checked my Blackberry for messages. I've got an e-mail from TORN, and as I scroll down, all the pre-meeting preparations fade into the background and I'm reading this amazing news release. I can't SQUEEE! or YAY! or WOOOOOOHOOOOOO! or anything. I have to pretend I'm all professional, and I belatedly remember I'm about to go into a presentation for a client that might result in several hundred thousands of work for my company.

So I grin inside and imagine all of you on TORN having a big party. Gramma's in tears, and old friends return to celebrate. I have to drive 3 hours to get home, and jump online as soon as I can.

So now that I can, I say WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

This is most excellent news. Let the ride begin again!

Howard for the Hobbit - Doug Adams speaks

posted by Doug Adams on his blog (in the comment section of The Hobbit announcement entry):

Quote

As everyone knows, in today’s climate no score is a sure thing until you’re in the theater and those speakers pop on. But I’ll tell you what I know…

Howard Shore is not currently signed on to this film. That’s not in any way bad news. Before today, there was no film! In fact, I spoke with Shore about The Hobbit just last Monday, and though he thought wheels were moving, he didn’t have any more information than that. But composers don’t sign on to projects until projects exist, so this is totally normal.

The better news is that Shore is interested. He’s been very public about this, so I’m sure it comes as no surprise—what’s great, however, is that Shore’s interest is likely to be very much fueled by New Line’s involvement. Remember, a film composer doesn’t work just with the director on a large project such as this. The “suits” become a large part of the process. (“Suits” seems a somewhat derogatort term, but I certainly don’t mean it as such. Just a convenient shorthand.) They ensure the composer has proper resources, proper materials, proper time. They make sure the budget exists to hire a fine orchestra, good recording engineers, noteworthy soloists. Composers and directors can be as creative as they want, but this sort of infrastructure is essential to realizing the final product. The Lord of the Rings’ score became what it was largely do to the support offered by such people as Paul Broucek, Rick Porras… and yes, Bob Shaye—all producers attached to New Line. Ever wonder why Shore, in the middle of an opera, a touring schedule and a number of demanding concert commissions agreed to score the little-known The Last Mimzy? With the support of New Line and Bob Shaye (who acted as director on this one) he knew he’d be in a comfortable working environment that nurtured his creativity. With New Line involved in The Hobbit, we’re almost certain to see many of these same behind-the-scenes people return, and that’s fantastic news. What’s more, there won’t be any sort of intellectual property issues regarding the LOTR themes and motifs that may find appropriate usage in The Hobbit’s score. Everything is already under one roof.

So short story, nothing is yet announced from Shore’s camp. He’ll have something to say when he has something to say. But I will note that the planets seem to be perfectly aligned for The Hobbit score we’re all hoping for.

-Doug

I'm already....

dusting off my flame-proof suit and laying in a stockpile of popcorn and S'mores ingredients. No doubt Draupne is sharpening the horns on her helmet and piling up the cans for flinging. Evil

Now all we need is Bullroarer and his legendary spiky boots to show up and we'll be ready for anything. Sly

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

The way i see it is,

Tolkien's work is a work pursued with pure and complete abandon. It is a work of heart and a work of soul and a work of love. To me the work of Jackson has to be judged in the same manner in that it strives and achieves those same transcendent qualities. In my heart Jackson has.

"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world."

Tolkien and C.S. Lewis- The Gift of Friendship -Duriez

And also, come to think of it,

all the other brilliant artists and craftspeople who designed and made swords and costumes and props and sets and everything else. I am still flabbergasted by the care and artistry that went into everything in those movies. I sure hope they can get some of those same people, and others who take their work this seriously! I only know the names of a few of them, but have the greatest admiration and respect for all of them.

Oh for the love of Bruce!

Really?

Raimi always drops Bruce in somewhere and many of us here love the cameos. I would love to see him, perhaps as a King of the Elves. Unless the writers greatly enhance that portion its a walk on/walk off role. Good clean fun.

Now getting the Buick in will be the real challenge.

I think he was on quite a roll for a while

I like each of these films:

A Simple Plan (1998)
For Love of the Game (1999)
The Gift (2000)
Spider-Man (2002)
Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Spider-Man 3 felt to me like the studio interfered and I hope that is what happened because if not Raimi really lost his way.

What I do love about Sam is:
1) Loves the material
2) Is as true a geek as those of us here
3) Has a sense of humor but gets action too and doesn't lose his character (except SM3 mentioned above)
4) Enjoys character
5) Spider-Man 2, which is about as good a superhero film as any ever made, gives me wonder and even confidence.

I wish my name was "Barrow Wong". Maybe I should change it. And now for my quote:

Nobody is allowed

Officially nobody CAN write the script because the writers are on strike. I feel confident that after the director is in place it will be Phillipa Boyens, Fran Walsh and PJ. I wonder if they will feel the freedom to re-write the script every single day.

Would directing these films be even more of a heartache than usual, given that the director's creative hands will be tied, even more than is usually the case, by the heavyweight writer-producers?

I think you're right

about the strike and Philippa/Fran/Jackson doing the screenplay. I think they've already gleaned LOTS of stuff when doing LotR just for this... fully intending to make The Hobbit sometime in the future. I also don't think any writer's strike can stop someone from doodling or jotting down notes ;)

Excited beyond belief

Though I believe he will direct it in a unique role as a producer/director. There is no way PJ can do all of this by himself just like in the film trilogy, there were multiple sets and locations with their own directors with PJ videoconferencing. I'm ecstatic that New Line has come back to reality and forever thankful to the valiant efforts of Mr. Sloan from MGM. If it had not been for his efforts along with Saul Zaentz' support, we would not have been brought this wonderful news. It was during the most darkest hours that Mr. Sloan pulled this through and when all hope was lost he kept saying or alluding to that it will be done and PJ will be involved directly. Now everybody needs to support MGM and thank New Line for coming to its senses. Yes Frodo, there is a Santa Claus!!! Smile

Crazy No sillies. PJ is master. We do what master tells us. After following along with the unabridged version and the BBC dramatized version of the LoTR with the books themselves. I have to say PJ has done a job worthy of great praise to this very day given the limitations of film and people's patience for sitting through lengthy films. It is a masterpiece born from the greatest book of fiction ever created. PJ loves Tolkien's work in order to butcher it. I believe that love is shared by Fran and Philipa as well. That passion is rarely shared by directors and producers alike.

Create More Tolkien?

In Reply To
I have the feeling they (Philippa/Fran/Peter) are going to try and do something very creative and satisfying with that second film. This is THEIR chance to create more Tolkien and finish what I'm sure the Good Professor would have done if he'd had more time.

Actually, Tolkien had plenty of time to write those stories (over 35 years, I believe), and he chose not to. I'm offended by the idea of someone with clout and deep pockets thinking that their resources give them the right to turn their fanfic into a huge studio film, and that it'll somehow "become" Tolkien. It won't. It'll be their adaptation of Tolkien's work, and will never be anything more. Considering the extreme liberties PJ & Co. took with Tolkien's well-written text for LOTR, I shudder to think how many more liberties they would take with the sketchy information in the appendices.

but why not

i don't understand this feeling of offense or resentment if people wanna go off on their own Tolkien tangents.
Yeah, they have clout and deep pockets...so? every fanfic writer wishes they had the same.

the tolkien world and stories they come up with may not be the world tolkien would have envisioned or what other readers think is right, but i say let the creativity flow. It's not taking away from anyone else's right or vision.

besides, it gives others something to gripe about then..which is more satisfying than if no one does anything new with tolkien's stories ever.

I don't know that Tolkien "chose not to" write more

Yes, he did deliberately leave off writing a sequel to LotR, but he started it. And look at all the "unfinished tales" he left behind. When I read Tolkien and the Silmarillion by Clyde Kilby I was struck by the pathetic (and I mean that in the nicest way) unorganized mess that Kilby described Tolkien's notes to be in. Tolkien wanted Kilby to help him, but couldn't even get things together enough to even give Kilby something to work on. Think of "Leaf By Niggle". Tolkien had reams of material floating around but just couldn't nail it down because of other demands on his time and lack of focus. He loved his elves and he loved writing about hobbits too. Given infinite time he surely would have written and finished more stories.

Where's Frodo?

Just don't call it "Tolkien"

It may be based on Tolkien's work, but it isn't his work. That's the distinction.

I got so tired of people saying, "I saw the movies, so I don't have to read the books." Given how much the movies deviated from the books in many places, that's just wrong. I know that lots of people were inspired to read the books because of the movies, and that's fantastic, but what about the folks who now have the entirely wrong idea about the characters in the books because of how they were portrayed in the movies? I love the books, and the characters, too much to see them shortchanged like this.

And for a "bridge" movie to be called Tolkien's work would be wrong in so many ways. They should say it's "inspired by" his work, but not claim it to be directly his, or an adaptation of his work. What I suspect is that people would see that movie and be sure they know what Tolkien wrote, or what he intended his characters to do, etc., when that would be about 180 degrees from the truth.

All that stuff PJ threw in about Aragorn not wanting the throne, his fear of inheriting weakness, etc.? That directly conflicts with what we know of him through the appendices -- how he fought valiantly for Rohan and Gondor, how he spent years protecting people everywhere, how he even went into Mordor and into Moria seeking out the dark things living there. Doesn't sound like a coward to me, or like someone who's trying to hide from the throne. Nope. Sounds to me like someone who's learning everything he needs to know, someone who's testing his bravery, putting himself on the line, getting to know the people he'd be ruling, and most of all, protecting them all. He showed valor in his actions, remember? Denethor's dad admired him above Denethor, or crying out loud. So, how would PJ reconcile this version of Aragorn with the sniveling coward he put in his movies? I can't see it. And if PJ & Co. write the "bridge" movie, they would somehow find a way to do that, and betray Tolkien's very characterization of Aragorn even further. That would not be Tolkien's work, but an adaptation. Yet moviegoers who can't be bothered to read the books would think it's what Tolkien wrote. That bothers me. And I'm allowed to be bothered by it.

Clarification...

... from the Lidless Eye:

Quote
The 'lending their name' line came from me and is what I had assumed reading between the lines of our conversation. I have been 'asked' to point out that this is not true (and apologies for the error),

Both PJ and Fran Walsh will take far more power as exec producers, and will have "the same influence as Steven Speilberg would have as executive producer" on a movie - in other words "they will be the main creative force behind the project - you'll know that this is a Peter Jackson movie".

She would not rule out PJ directing and or writing / supervising, but then again everything is up for grabs. They only signed last week.

Well....

Well, there's the courtship of Eowyn and Faramir, because there they are standing together at the coronation, on-screen, so obviously something happened off-screen over and beyond the hint we get in the RotK-EE. Leaving this out doesn't improve on the book, though. All it does is make the movie move along faster.

Is this what you mean?

* * * * * * *
Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?

A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!"

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!

Bit late on the uptake here, I've only just found out. Extremely pleased would be an understatement.

Bit worried about who's going to direct, though. The Hobbit films have to have the same feel as the LOTR films, there's got to be some sense of connection between them, otherwise for me it would spoil the experience. Getting Shore to compose would be a great help for a start.

Sorry. In my excitement, I wasn't clear on what I meant

I admit my phrasing made it seem that way, that ANYONE's fanfic would "become" Tolkien. That's not at all what I meant. There's going to be fanfic for these films. There's nothing for it. I'm just relieved that it looks like it will be done by people who are in the industry, but have a proven record of their respect and consideration of Tolkien's works. As I've often said before, and meant to imply here, that it will be like having more Tolkien.

There is only one Tolkien. These films are going to be made. I'm just relieved they are in the safest hands that I feel we can hope for.

Sometimes Tolkien chose not to write more.

Concerning Bombadil, for instance, Tolkien wrote that it is important for a story to include enigmas. Likewise he meant for some distant vistas to remain that way, to add versimilitude to the story.

"Sniveling coward"?

So, how would PJ reconcile this version of Aragorn with the sniveling coward he put in his movies?

This just goes to show you how different people can process exactly the same thing in so many different ways. To me, the Aragorn of the movies is a very brave and intelligent man -- so intelligent he realizes the corruption inherent in power, so brave he fights for what's right anyway.

As I've said many times before, I tend to find book-Aragorn a bit arrogant at time, whereas I find movie-Aragorn to be a leader worth dying for, not least because of his courage in acknowledging his doubts.

Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?

A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!"

time to break out the "meh's"

sure, you're allowed to be bothered by it.
and i'm allowed to say why being bothered by it kinda seems silly.

I mean, yeah, there's tons of idjits who say they won't read the books because they saw the movies...but honestly, do you think those people were going to read the books ever anyways?!
So who cares if they get their tolkien "wrong" or don't understand the real reasons for aragorn's valour or whatever.

As for calling it tolkien...the dude's dead, so it won't bother him what it's called. People with brains know what tolkien wrote and what he didn't and people without brains aren't worth fussing over anyways.

I like the idea of a field day of Tolkien inspired fanfic and movies and whatever..the more the better. It just seems more fun than lighting sacred candles by Tolkien's tomb or preserving the sanctity of the Silmarillion.

A little food for thought...

Here is a statement from PJ, made back in 1998, that he posted on aintitcoolnews after the announcement that he would make the movies:

"How am I going to make The Lord of the Rings? I love these books as much as most of you do. I am going to make 3 very personal movies. This will be "The Lord of the Rings" that I would dream of seeing at the movies. At least I'm going to try and get as close to that as I can. I can't make your version, or anybody elses. Trying to second guess what millions of fans have in their heads would be fatal.
I know this sounds glib and defensive ... the books are masterpieces and always will be. There's nothing anybody could do on film that could destroy the quality or influence of J.R.R.Tolkien's writing. In future decades, in a world of holograms and virtual entertainment, our movies will be old relics ... and the books will still be a great read. "

Love your avatar!

In fact I was doing that at one point, earlier today at work...Tongue

I remember that statement; and it's what we all have to keep in mind. Movie-makers will create a version of a book; it is impossible to make an exact movie of any book! That's the reality.

So all that is required of us is to sit back, relax with it, have FUN discussing it and speculating, enjoy watching the whole process unfold, and whatever the result thank those who went through all the sweat and tears to make it!

Now how can that attitude

and reverence for Tolkien be seen as anything but respectful? I'm glad you found that. I haven't read it in years, and it's still beautiful :)

Thanks, BG :) Cheers!

enigmas, shenigmas

Tolkien did write more about Bombadil -- he had that whole series of poems about him. Luckily for us and for the narrative, they're not all in LotR, but they're out there. No, Tolkien didn't pin down Bombadil's exact nature anywhere, but he would have if he'd figured it out for himself!

Also, Butterbur's involvement

He greets the hobbits when they arrive and gives them something to eat/drink, then he hides behind the bar when the Nazgul arrive. Lots and lots different than the book where he's more proactive and more of an affiliation with Gandalf than the film's "long grey beard, pointy hat!" He could have helped the Company leave the next morning, but we didn't see that. Where'd Bill come from? Questions and more questions.

Aw, thank you for the very kind compliment! I must confess I do feel the petition had some influence, but those 63000 folks who signed it both online and off are the ones who truly deserve thanks. *applauds signers*

That said, I wouldn't complain if both you and I ended up in NZ as extras. Wink

Fanfic Movie!

...which is why I'm officially calling the 2nd movie the Fanfic Movie! (ooh, let's start a trend!)

Seriously, though, I can see where New Line is coming from. It's an obvious ploy to milk the franchise, but there is a lot of material there. If PJ and crew take the time to really supervise these movies instead of just letting them become shoddy castoffs, then the Fanfic Movie could be good. Maybe we'll see a female dwarf!

Ahh!

I just found out early this afternoon and got to a computer as soon as i could-- 9 hours, not a good precedent to set, but what can you do? Anyways, my point is-- YES!!! I've been looking wistfully at grammaboodawg's sig for weeks and she was right, it IS coming, and even if there's going to be another movie of probably mostly original material, i'm ok with that-- I'm willing to lay my purist tendencies at the feet of my fannishness.

Huzzah and double huzzah!

Let's just hope..

that at least one or two of the dwarves are more serious characters, I don't like to see all of them just bringing some comedy to these movies. But still this news is the best news i've had in long time, and I can't wait to see this film happening!!

We'll know whne the first casting choices are made.

If they go for big Hollywood names we are in trouble. No Nicole Kidman for the film please! If we start seeing lots of obscure or little names then we'll know PJ is in control!

More like a 16-year gap

One change that would have had to have been made to the Fellowship of the Ring adaptation if the gap had been maintained is that Merry, Pippin and Sam could not have been introduced as adults at Bilbo's (and Frodo's) birthday party. By Hobbit standards, they would have still been children.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but the difference between book and films is closer to 16 years than 17. It had to be nearly a year after Bilbo's departure when Frodo and Sam leave the Shire. The vegitables in Farmer Maggot's fields indicate that it must be late summer of the following year (or close to it).

BTW, I posted a probable timeline for the combined Hobbit/LOTR films on IMDb reflecting Jackson's changes. Would anyone like me to post it over here?
