Favourite House in "A Song of Ice and Fire/ Game of Thrones"

I'm a Stark person myself, I like just about every Stark out there, apart from Sansa. The only Lannister I find likable is Tyrion. I find the Greyjoys interesting and Theon and particular, while at the same time I don't think they're especially good people. I detest Frey and Bolton for obvious reasons....

~minor spoilers~

As book readers know, being a fan of the Starks isn't very rewarding later on in the books... The Red Wedding was a low point for me when I first read it. I have never read anything as shocking and depressing in any book.

Targaryen

I like house Targaryen. I find their story really interesting. Danaerys is a fascinating character to me in the books. Like all of the families they have their good and bad. Vicerys was certainly pretty bad. I like the overall themes of the clan though and the fact that they spent so long exiled from the main continent and Dany's move to get it back I found interesting.

House Stark for me. It seems to be the house with the less flaws compared to the power/intrigue obsessed Lannisters or the rough Greyjoys and so on.
Yet, this House suffers so much...Frown

As for the characters, I sympathize most the Stark family-especially Arya, Bran and Jon- ,Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister.

Looking forward to season 3 opening next month!Smile

Can't wait for season 3

I am confident it will be great.

Westeros... the world where you are punished if you try to be a good man and uphold some sort of justice! Compared to Middle-earth, Westros is just messed up beyond words.

Indeed

Yes, the world of Martin is so different to the one of Tolkien. I like the distinguish between the two...

Middle earth is full of the eternal fight between good and evil, strong values like sacrifice, friendship against corruption, greed etc ... Though Westeros is more about 'everyone against everyone', multiple sided characters, plots and twists.

Definately House Baratheon

Stannis is my main man, basically.

I also like the Lannisters.

Starks for me too!

Actually, the event you reference is likely a secondary reason I'm not reading the series anymore. (Primary reason is, I am waiting for him to finish it! When I first started reading it, which was when the first one came out in hardback, it was supposed to be a trilogy...)

If he does finish I still plan to read it, though! I've also watched the first few episodes of the TV show, which is really quite good.

Re: Sansa, she grew on me. (Though as I have read only 3 of the books, possibly there is more to dislike there that I am not yet aware of.)

Stark and Martell. *spoilers*

I love all the Starks except Sansa and Robb. Jon's end in A Dance with Dragons infuriated me. I doubt any Starks will be alive by the last book. The Red Wedding caught me by surprise, and the Freys are now my least favourite house. The series is the most emotionally-draining I've ever read.

I adored Oberyn. When Martin killed him off too, I had given up on having favourite characters. Tolkien may not be realistic in terms if character deaths, but I don't want every character in a book to die. Oberyn's daughters are interesting characters. I love the scenes with Prince Doran watching the children play.

I was disgusted with Martin *big spoilers*

when he killed Catlyn Stark - but I kept reading, and *did not* expect her return!

BTW I bet $100 that Jon isn't dead. I've seen speculation about his heritage that makes too much sense within the book's storyline for him to cark it now.

So you mourned....

Catelyn, but not Robb? Opposite for me really Tongue

Catelyn was not one of my favourite characters, but I felt her pain at that moment though, it was impossible not to. I would have liked her a lot more if she would have had a different approach towards Jon. How she treated him was hard to digest for me.

Not so much mourned,

but thoroughly surprised at her unexpected death - and the *manner* of her death (not to mention Robb's).

She was a cow towards Jon but she loved her children and her husband.

The manner of the death indeed

I wonder if they will include "The Rains of Castamere" on the show when said event happens. When the Freys started singing in the book, I knew something creepy was going to happen.

I feel like I'm watching Clue (*spoilers*)

So when more major characters get murdered, I just sort of look into the room, see the dead body, and wander off without much of a reaction. When I saw people posting about how Jon died (or maybe didn't die) in DwD, I had to think for a minute, because couldn't remember that happening at first.

I have spoken with a few people who say that they really sympathize with Sansa, but I just can't get over her actions in the first book, and I really don't think she's changed since then. Sure, a lot has happened to her, but that doesn't mean I like her any more for it.

LIke you, I've sort of given up on favorite characters, particularly in House Stark, but I'll be curious to see what happens with Arya-- I'm hoping she lives, because I've been intrigued with how she was set up, and how her character has been progressing.

I've also gotten a bit irritated at the number of twists-- the Targaryens, for instance-- I don't see how GRRM is going to neatly be able to tie up the other prince with Dany in the conclusion of this series, unless one of them dies. I feel like too much has been set up, and there isn't enough time for a satisfactory conclusion.

I had trouble with the cow part

It was good that it didn't take up much of the series, otherwise her attitude towards Jon would have really bothered me too much to like her character.

I'm still uncertain as to what GRRM is doing with her character at the moment, though.

I suppose House Martell (*minor spoilers*)

Maybe I would have said House Stark in the first novel, but since then, they've dwindled too much in number for me to really like them as a house anymore. We only have-- what-- three or four left now, and one of them is three years old? (ignoring zombies, potential zombies, and potential fake deaths) For me, other the problem with the Starks is that they're all kind of stupid, and I feel as though several of their deaths have been the result of their own stupidity.

That's also true with the Greyjoys and the Baratheons for me-- Robert was stupid, Stannis was a jerk, and Renly was, well, silly, to the point of being stupid.

As harsh as Westeros is, so many of these families don't seem to have grasped the art of living in it. At least the Lannisters are smart, in that sense, as unlikable as they may be.

I have really been interested in the Martell storyline, from the moment The Mountain fell. Well, almost fell, sort of (again, more stupidity). I found their characters to have been really engaging, I enjoy whenever we cut to their world, and I am very eager to see how they play out in the end. Sometimes I secretly want them to defeat the Lannisters, take over, and turn Westeros into a giant vineyard.

I have to say that is true

About the Starks. They are pretty stupid. All of them. Robb was a total moron. Catelyn wasn't much better. Ned..well Ned should have known better and walked right into that one. Sansa I can't abide but she does get better as the books go on I have to say.

I did like the Aerys Targaryen story. maybe that's why I like the house. Vicerys was an idiot but he was pretty evil and that was fun. Evil

About the heritage *spoilers*

Are you talking about the theory of him being the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark? That is quite plausible.

I've also doubted his death, but it made me angry anyway. At the time I promised myself that I'd never read another in the series again. But I doubt I'd be able to do that.

Sansa is more likeable in FFC and DWD *minor spoilers*

But she will always annoy me, even if she ends up saving Westeros.

I doubt Martin will kill off Tyrion, Arya or Daenerys any time soon. At the moment they're too important to the story. Although I couldn't stand Dany in DWD with the Daario Naharis story.

Good point on the twists. He's adding so many characters that even his rate of getting rid of them is not enough. It seemed to me that in DWD he had lost control of things. So many twists, betrayals, characters and viewpoints my head hurts. I think there was one chapter in Melisandre's view, and it was in the middle of the book. Crazy

Now that I think about it...

The Starks aren't very smart. I'd say only Arya and maybe Jon have brains. Rickon's too...erm, unstable to know.

Viserys was pretty witty. Wink

Robb and Ned are not stupid, they just choose not to follow their wits, their personal honor is more important for them.

I felt similarly about Sansa when I read the first book. *spoilers*

But then eventually it dawned on me that she was eleven at the time. (This probably dawned on me around the time she had her first period and it became time for her to marry, which was two books later IIRC,and she was all of 13). At that point I realized she was trying to be a "good" child, a lady as she was raised to be, and she trusted all the adult authorities around her without understanding the conflicts swirling around her, or the stakes. For which I can't, I am afraid, blame an 11 year old; if anyone, I would have to blame her parents, though especially Ned is a character I liked a lot!

I think Arya's being even younger hurt Sansa in my estimation in the early going, but because Arya was always an unusual child with unusual interests I think this made her naturally less trusting of adults and their good intentions. I like her more and relate to her more than I do to Sansa, but I've come to see Sansa as a well-written character with a more traditionally "feminine" approach who as she has been (rather harshly) disabused of a lot of her childish, naive, romantic notions, is managing in her own way the things the series has thrown at her.

I don't think her relatively young age is an excuse for being rude.

Arya is younger than her and conducted herself in a more polite (though less "feminine") way. It's her fault that the wolf Lady was killed. She was (and still is in a way) selfish and naive, and she can't get away with being a child no more (she calls herself "a woman grown and flowered" ) so better start acting like one, IMO.
