Frodos last glance.
I don't know if I imagine this but I don't care anyway as I think its great.when frodo is about to climb aboard the ship at the end of ROTK,he's looking back towards Sam,pippin and merry.as he moves he looks again and in my mind looks just at Sam and then he makes a last glance which is directly to camera and does a little smile and almost a nod.I love this and have pointed it out to my kids,saying 'watch for it now,he's going to look and smile at YOU' and when he did it they absolutely loved it as they are almost nearly always in tears at that point anyway.this really makes a lovely connection with the audience.I may be wrong,PJ and Elijah might not have had any intention of making it look like this at all but I like to believe that's what's happening as it makes a great ending even better.any thoughts? Smile

That little nod...
...together with his smile, I love it. It's a bit like he is saying good-bye to the audience, isn't it? Intended or not, it does look like he is looking at the audience.

It could be a litte 'See ya' nod to Sam, of course, but I'd like to think that he acknowledges the people on the other side of the screen.

Thought it might be just me being daft Smile haha.I'm convinced he looks at JUST Sam,then the last look before he turns away is to camera.completely fantastic.even more magical for the kids.....and us Wink

That I loved seeing Frodo in Hobbit. I know some of people have griped about him being there, but I loved it! Because we got to see a happy and carefree Frodo. A Frodo before someone shoved him into a hand-basket and sent him on his way. Unsure

I've always loved that part
I see it as Frodo saying farwell to his friends and to the audience, as he sails of the the Undying Lands, forever, never to be seen again in Middle-Earth. Frown *sniiff* I'm usually in tears at this point too. It's so bittersweet and beautiful!

I agree with you, and also,
every time I see that head turn and facial expression, it reminds me of how very different his facial expression was after he had witnessed Gandalf's fall in Moria. He turns his head in the same way, but what a terrible thing it is to see his poor face then. It's probably been discussed here before, but the similarity of the two shots can't be accidental. It says so much about Frodo and what he has gone through to reach this final, peaceful point.

Exactly!
I do think you can come away with he is not only to the other hobbits but the audience as well. The thing I take away every time is as you said all the pain and weight he has carried is now gone from him. IMO you see the color and happpiness come back to his face and he once again looks like the Frodo we saw when Gandalf arrives for Bilbo's Birthday. He is at peace for the first time in a long time and deservedly so.

I, too, have noticed the similarity in those shots
They may or may not be deliberate---it could simply be Elijah's body language. But the contrast is stark, from one of the points he hits bottom, to when he finally finds peace.

You gave Me Another reason To Watch It!
I had to watch the Grey Havens scene after I read all the comments. It is a beautiful scene and he DOES look right at the camera it was cool. I love how the scene is drawn out too. He says goodbye to everyone in real time there's no cutting or anything ,amazing acting by all of them you really feel like your best friend in the world is leaving you forever when you watch it. I love how when Bilbo & Frodo walk towards the ship you see how tall they are compared to the big folk it's. I believe Frodo whispers something to Sam too by the look on Sam's face. the whole ending of Return Of The King feels like the end of a great age.

Was hoping some had thought the same but nice to highlight it for others who hadn't seen it that way Smile yeh the whole final scene is great as far as I'm concerned and not,like some say,too drawn out or an one of too many endings.surely the more time we spend in middle earth the better! Smile

I started tearing up just reading this...
He turns to show the care and pain gones... healthy, content, and free of the shadow. I hadn't thought of him looking at us... at me... to nod quietly, intimately and say "it's okay". I'm usually such a mess by now that its all I can do to bear his farewells... which Barrow-Wight points out was done in real time! That is significant! AND I know he's whispering to Sam, as he rubs his shoulders, not to be sad and that his time will come to follow... to come to Valinor... when he's ready. The last of the Ring-bearers.

Has anyone else ever noticed that Frodo's eyes seems to slightly brighten or glitter as he's looking... just before he nods? I swear I saw that when at the theatre viewings and on the dvd. Just a very slight lightened sparkle. As subtle as Boromir's face losing its colour when he passes away.

Cripes... I'm crying again.

I'm going to add this and Barrow-Wight's observations on this to the LotR Tidbits Geeky List. It'll take a while as I'm updating the LotR lists along with the Hobbit lists.

I love that smile from him!!!! i was swooning for it for such a long time after watching RotK 10x in the theaters.
