A Middle-earth Logic Puzzle

This one's not too hard...go on, give it a go!

When Gandalf made his dramatic appearance in Goblin-town, laying flat dwarves and goblins alike, his big bad Gandalf magic went a little awry. When the dwarves staggered back to their feet, Nori tossed weapons one at a time to each of five dwarves. Unfortunately, Nori’s aim was poor and each weapon wasn’t necessarily caught by its original owner! But then, thanks to Gandalf’s wonky magic blast, each of the five dwarves turned to battle goblins but instead ended up slaying a different foe – thus completely rewriting the history of Middle-earth.

Can you figure out the weapon that each dwarf caught, the order in which he caught it, and the enemy that he slew?

Dwarves: Bofur, Dwalin, Fili, Kili, Thorin
Weapons: Bombur’s soup ladle, a pair of axes, a bow with a quiver of arrows, a mattock, and Orcrist
Enemy: Smaug, Bolg, Azog, Sauron, Great Goblin

1. Four dwarves, in consecutive order of catching their weapons from first to last, are the one who received Orcrist, Bofur, the one who caught Bombur’s soup ladle, and the one who slew Bolg.
2. Dwalin caught his new weapon immediately before the dwarf who caught the mattock but immediately after the one who finally offed Sauron.
3. Thorin (who, alas, is not the dwarf who slew Azog) caught his weapon immediately after Fili.
4. The dwarf who deprived Bard of his heroism by slaying Smaug caught his weapon immediately before Fili but immediately after the dwarf who caught the bow and quiver of arrows.

Remember to keep answers out of your subject lines! Have fun, and I'll post answers when I get a Round Tuit.

Rewrite indeed!

And what a battle that must have been, in that rickety goblin-town! Laugh

1. Kili caught Orcrist; he slew Azog.
2. Next Bofur caught the bow and arrows; he slew Sauron.
3. Then Dwalin caught Bombur's ladle; he slew Smaug - now, this is giving me some pause, how in the world do you slay a dragon with a ladle? But then, after all, this is Dwalin!
4. Then Fili caught the mattox; he slew Bolg.
5. Finally Thorin caught the pair of axes; he slew the Great Goblin, but he axe'd nicely first.

Whee! What fun, Ro, thank you! Cool

Colonel Mustard with the wrench, in the study

First Kili leaped, deftly snatching Orcrist in mid-jump. In an impressive alley-oop aerial twist, he beheaded Azog with it as he passed. "FOR THROR!!!!" the young stubble-chinned warrior bellowed, imitating his uncle Thorin's ferocity.

Bofur then snagged the bow as it hurtled at him. He barely caught the quiver. as well, by its strap. Most of the shafts tumbled and spilled. "What is WRONG with you brother?" he cried as Sauron, the Necromancer unmasked, bore down upon him. Bofur looked upon the flaming-eyed menace and knew he would have no time to nock, draw, and aim, let alone loose. Sauron seized him and lifted him off his feet, and drew back his mace.

"A fine sport this is," Bofur quipped, at which Sauron's mace hesitated just slightly. "...if you have the balls for it.". With that, he slapped Sauron across the "face" with the bow. It shattered upon impact. Sauron did not flinch. But in the same motion, Bofur grabbed the last arrow from the quiver and buried it fletchings-deep into the dark slitted pupil.

Just as Sauron began his death-rattle, Dwalin was ladling Smaug into submission. Why search for a weak spot when one could rely on bludgeoning? To be followed by a choke hold, leading to a neck-break. So much neck, so little time to make a break.

Fili caught Bofur's mattock as he noticed his uncle, his captain, his King, locked in furious combat with the Great Goblin...and Bolg was sneaking up on Thorin for the sneak attack.

"Look out Uncle!" he cried, but T horin was too busy ducking a jab of the Great Goblin's club. Bolg was nearly upon him. But they were all too far away. Frantically Fili hurled the mattock. It rotated vertically once, twice....THUD! Bolg was knocked off his feet. Where he fell, black fluid pooled about his unmoving head.

Even as that occurred, Thorin heard the clatter of axes tossed by Bifur onto the ground to his right, a few feet too far. Confound and bebother that Bifur! he thought, surprising himself in adopting one of Bilbo's catchphrases. He ducked under a swing of the obese foe's club and dove low, rolling across his right shoulder and opposite hip as he scooping them up in the same movement.

Great Goblin did not appear to be impressed. "What are you going to do now, son of Thrain?" he taunted.

But then the corpulent one looked down and realized that the two axes had cleaved him through his wide, gelatinous middle. "That'll do it," he muttered before his top half toppled.

I thought that the butler did it...

First Kili took Orcrist and cleverly slew
Great Azog the Orc at a close interview.
Bofur caught a big bow and also a quiver
And Sauron dispatched with a bolt through the liver.
As the third came Dwalin, he wielded a ladle
And smote the dragon as he lay on the table.
With a mattock did Fili strike Bolg on the head
With such force that the Orc straightaway fell down dead.
And last but not least came Thorin with axes
And felled the Great Goblin -- the poet relaxes.

I think I borked me brain..

But this is what I've come up with:

1. Kili got Orcrist and killed Azog (I'm sure his uncle was very proud of him)
2. Bofur caught bow and arrows and killed Sauron (well done, Bofur! Did he shoot him in the eye?)
3. Dwalin caught the soup ladle and killed Smaug (ok, probably only Dwalin could pull that one off...)
4. Fili, with the mattock, killed Bolg (again, his uncle must have been very proud)
5. And finally, Thorin, who by now must have been quite impatiently tossing his hair, caught the pair of axes and killed the Great Goblin.

That's my new reality.

Right.

This one wasn't too hard - but it was great fun. Thank you!

According to your scenario:
  1. Kili (such an impetuous boy he is!) grabbed is uncle's sword, and then rushed to finish off Azog for him, is that right?
  2. And then Bofur shot Sauron right through the Eye! Alternative history, or utter fabrication?
  3. I wouldn't have expected something Smaug's size would be done for with a soup ladle; but it is had to be so, I agree that Dwalin is the only dwarf for the job.
  4. Fili buldgeoned Bolg with a mattock. Well this, at least, has a faint hint of plausibility.
  5. And once Thorin finished combing, he was left with two axes, but no foe to fight. Well, he got the Great Goblin, if it makes you feel better.

Thank you Roheryn!

Nice trick, slaying Sauron without the One Ring

But hey, if anyone in Middle Earth could do that, AND rock that awesome hat, it'd be Bofur!

Here's my solution to the puzzle - thanks, I absolutely LOVE these types of puzzles!

First:
Kili with Orcrist laying some family-revenge smackdown on Azog

Second:
Bofur rockin' the hat & Quiver and Cupiding Sauron

Third:
Dwalin, no stranger to food & cooking himself, using the ladle to make a Long Lake Stew ala Smaug

Fourth:
I boldly feel Matlock need not tell me that Fili Mattock'ed Bolg

Fifth:
Thorin axed the Great Goblin to dinner

Not too hard, eh?

So Dwalin knocks out Smaug with Bombur's soup ladle? I would like to see that Cool. Or I just got this completely wrong.
Anyway, great puzzle. Here's what I think happened:

1.Kili, Azog, Orcrist
2.Bofur, Sauron, bow with a quiver of arrows
3.Dwalin, Smaug, Bombur's soup ladle
4.Fili, Bolg, mattock
5.Thorin, Great Goblin, a pair of axes

And I would never have guessed it would have been that easy to kill Sauron. Maybe Bofur is a better archer than Legolas after all.

Answers from Beamer, my Hobbit and me

We all worked the problem separately and came up with the same answers (whew! It's good to know I've retained enough knowledge to do as well as a couple of middle-grades kids...)

My Hobbit's big comment was, "Killing a dragon with a soup ladle!?!" Smile

So here we go:

Annnd first off the block we have Kili handily mowing down Azog with his uncle's new favorite toy, Orcrist. We're used to seeing his mastery with the bow and arrows, but today, folks, it looks like team equipment manager Nori has decided to shake things up a bit.
Speaking of Kili's bow and arrows, it looks like Bofur is using them to some effect on Sauron, team captain for the other side. Wow, we've never seen technique like that; didn't even know you could use a bow that way, but it seems to be working. And Sauron is down, he's... he's done for, folks; what a victory for the Dwarves this day!
Next up, Dwalin goes in against Smaug the Dragon, armed with... can it be? Well, I for one have never seen the likes of it, folks; Dwalin's got Bombur's soup ladle! Have you ever seen the likes of it?!? But just to show what a class act this guy is, Dwalin's not only using that ladle, he's... yes, folks, he's done it! Smaug the Mighty is down! Felled by a kitchen utensil, as the crowd goes wild!
Excitement is building here, folks, as it looks like our guys just might make it through this round of deadly combat. It's Fili up next, and he's been handed Bofur's mattock. Now, I know what you're thinking, but make no mistake, this is one serious weapon in the right hands, as anyone who's ever been up against Bofur can tell you. Today, it's Bolg's turn, and... it's all over for him, just like that, Bolg is out of it! Way to go, FIli!
And coming in at sweeper, it's team captain Thorin. Best known for his impressive work with a blade, today he's in there with Gloin's battleaxes. Now, now, not that kind of battleaxe, heh, heh. No, these formidable weapons are... interesting fact here... they're family heirlooms in Gloin's family; they'll probably be passed on to one of his sons some day. Thorin getting a feel for them as he goes against the Great Goblin... We might be settling in for a while here, folks... Wait, no, Thorin's gained an advantage, this could be it, and...
Goal! GOAL!!! The Dwarves have done it! What a come-from-behind victory for our boys! Even Nori's smiling, he just can't help himself! Oh, what a great day for these fine fighters. We'll be going into the locker room after a few words from our sponsors, so stay tun-

*eyes bug out* Gandalf's Wonky Magic Blast?

BWAAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! *still sniggering* omg...

My brain hurts, but I'm determined to sort this out.

1. Kili got Azog after catching Orcrist. Bummer that Thorin did do the deed, but one of his favourite nephews finishing the job with his (Thorin's) sword is a worthy second.
2. Bofur snagged Sauron with the bow and arrows. Neat trick! Think flaming eyeball with no wings but now has feathers sticking out.
3. Dwalin got Smaug with a ladle. Now why does that make me smile? Dwalin would have a blast nailing the worm and we all know he can dish it out.
4. Fili slays Bolg with a mattock. Takes tenderizing a piece of tough meat to a whole new level.
5. Thorin gets the Great Goblin with the axes. That'll do it ;)

WOW! Great fun, Ro! Thanks :D
