I regularly check the three LOTR boards

for FOTR, TTT, and ROTK. There is a general LOTR board that is about general Tolkien topics (I think there's a general Star Trek and Star Wars board, as well). I don't post there. That was pretty much an old group of friends that never talked movies. When I first started going to the LOTR movie boards (perhaps before I even started hanging out here much), it was pretty trollish. I really couldn't figure out why I went except I think a part of me was building up a thick skin. I was very sensitive about Tolkien when I first started talking about it. I was such a joyful thing for me I couldn't figure out why anyone would want to make it contentious and unpleasant. But they do... and I needed a thicker skin. That ignore button really, really helped. I've had up to 250 people on ignore at any one time. And... I really wanted to talk Tolkien. :-) But as the popularity of the movies waned and other movies came into the spotlight, most of the trollish people moved off to them. That's why it's clear that trolls don't really believe most of the stuff they say. They just want to yank people's chains. (And it's also why I'm hesitant to call someone who truly believes passionately about something but chooses unfortunate ways of expressing it a 'troll') And there's a small core of people much like these boards (in fact, a few have wandered here to check us out). They are older (that is, not 15), intelligent, well spoken, well versed on the books and mostly enjoy the movie. And the conversations there, for a while, were much more intelligent and civil than the ones I was experiencing here. We even have our resident... don't like the movie much but I feel no need to trash it and, while we're here, we can discuss the book as well. I also spent some time on boards for A Knight's Tale and Moulin Rouge. I like movies and I like talking about them and I liked those movies very much. And for awhile, I was checking Howard Shore's board to see if there were questions I could answer. Now, I like to spend time on a board called, "I Need to Know." It's for people who can't remember what that movie was that had a ghost and a ship and maybe it was set in outer space. :-) I sometimes know the answer and sometimes can find it by research. It's just like picking up the crossword puzzle and trying to solve a few clues as a short break. The trolls on that board aren't bad. Or maybe all that hang out there are on my ignore list. (That function is AWESOME). And, I check out imdb's fact pages for every movie I watch and most tv shows on DVD (and some on broadcast). Some of those message boards are worthy. But mostly for the smaller, indy movies. (or maybe older ones) Any new popular movie attracts the trolls like flies. And most people feel it's cheating to use the ignore button or something so they engage the trolls and it just becomes one big stinking mess of threads. I will say, the nice thing about imdb is you can snipe back at people. It's sometimes kind of satisfying to say, sometimes, 'how old are you?' when someone is acting like an ***.
