movie mistakes

wondering what other movie mistakes other people have spotted: like Eomer's sword falling out when he gets on his horse after meeting Aragorn & co, Gimli's shoe falling off when running, and Theodens horse doing a number 2 whilst walking towards Orthanc: any others?

There's two that get me

The hand tied, hands untied Pippin -- right before they escape the orcs and go into Fangorn

The appearing and disappearing barrels -- Sam and Frodo at Henneth Annun with Faramir.

There's others that I manage to squint and ignore but these two get me every time.

Eowyn's hair and dress

In the scenes on the way from Edoras to Helm's Deep, Eowyn has the front part of her hair pulled back in some shots, and down in others; she's also wearing two different dresses. You could say this shows the passage of time, but the switch back and forth happens even in the scene with them arriving at Helm's Deep. Unless she's pretending to be Queen Amadala from Star Wars prequels, it's a big continuity boo-boo.

The only thing I noticed at my first viewing...

...was Boromir's hand during his death scene, on Aragorn's shoulder from one angle, not on his shoulder from the other. Most of the other errors I only noticed after someone pointed them out to me here, although I may have seen Pippin's tied/untied hands for myself.

Most of these I heard about from others before I noticed

Merry kicks a mug off the table when he and Pippin are dancing and singing in RoTK, but it might not be a blooper.

Maybe another intentional one is Shelob stinging Frodo- the location of the sting wound, and the camera angle, along with the neckline of the mithril coat all don't make sense to me.

Every time I notice the Ringwraith coming out from the middle of the tree, party tent props disappearing after the dragon firework, Gandalf's power cord in Moria, The horses are suddenly gone in RoTK after Aragorn gives his speech to the troops, Pippin's rope, and Eomer's sword falling out. I never seem to think about Boromir's hand, though.

I'm sure moviemistakes.com has a bunch posted there.

Not dead yet...

When Aragorn runs to the dying Boromir, he passes an Uruk who looks up slightly, I think Viggo might have stepped on his hand or something.

Some of the stalagmites in the caves of Helms Deep wobble as people pass them.

I hear there is also a dead Galahadrim wearing glasses at Helms Deep too.

Sam stabs Shelob twice in the belly

but removes the sword once.

When on the banks of Amon Hen and considering leaving the Fellowship, Frodo's tear tracks are long, then short, then long.. (although this pice of continuity would have been too difficult to get right, I believe!)

However the two that particularly grate, as someone else has said, are Pippin's tied-untied-tied hands when he's beneath the horse at the edge of Fangorn Forest, and the disappearing barrells in Faramir's hidey-hole.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

Movie mistakes

At Helm's Deep during TT after Aragorn and Legolas have words when Aragorn is sitting on the steps, some Rohan dude steps on the end of Aragorn's sword and nearly flips it up in Viggo's face! Priceless.

There are crew members showing in the background in many places

One of the most famous is one in the middle of Uruks at Black gate, but something i noticed recently is that there's some random bald guy in some shots at Council of Elrond.

Oh yeah and ofcourse many doubles in shots where they stood out a bit too much

Also, something that i remember is Aragorn shouting 'Hold!' in Elvish to the Bowmaster of Helm's deep... Tongue

The Black Rider

on the Road. When the Hobbits first hide under the tree and the Rider comes into frame, you only see him on the left side of the tree. The space on the right of the tree (where he would walk through first) stays empty. And the light is graded differently in the small right segment between the tree and end of frame.

Threads like this must give editorial staff chest pain.Tongue

I still think that's deliberate,

to increase the spookiness factor of the Black Rider and his horse.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

Never thought of it that way

I've always seen it as a mistake. I am going to try watching it with different eyes next time.

Some things that are probably mistakes

also fit in quite nicely with the scene.
One example is a horse in Faramir's hopeless mission misbehaving. In a wide shot of the horses charging towards death in their battle formations, one horse shies out of line and it's really obvious. It's clearly not meant to happen in the movie, but to me it looks just like what could really happen in battle, so that's how I choose to see it.

And I would put a horse doing its business in that category, because it's just what horses do.

I think it's only one dress,

the other one (with the brooch) is, I believe, a coat that she sometimes puts on over the dress.

More movie mistakes

Okay so I've been thinking and I've come up with some more mistakes: In FOTR, just after the Hobbits meet up with Strider and he is leading them off, his bow whacks into the camera. You have to look hard because the camera shake is barely visible.
In the TT in Emyn Muil right after Frodo and Sam capture Gollum, Frodo trips on a rock and we all know that Elijah didn't intend for that to happen.
In FOTR in the Midgewater Marshes when Pippin falls on his face you can see that Billy's prosthetic foot is coming off because of the damp.
In ROTK when everyone is riding back from Isengard and it shows Eowyn standing on the Edoras steps, notice the smoke is going DOWN the chimneys because they reversed the shot.
In the TT as the Three Hunters are running and the camera pulls away watch closely and you will see Orlando trip and catch himself. Graceful Elf indeed!
In ROTK after Faramir returns and Denethor sees Boromir's image behind him, when Denethor falls backwards he bumps against his throne and the "Very Heavy Marble" Wink rocks back and forth!
I'm sure there are more mistakes that I've missed but the really cool part of it is is that we just accept these "Quirks" as part of the experience and let it be. True fans we must be!
