SCOD - "It's the beards."

Welcome to the first Screencap of the Day for 2013! Let's not tarry any longer and make haste! Smile

Aragorn commentates Gimli's account of dwarf-women.

1.) What are your thoughts on the focus in this screencap? Obviously we're meant to be looking at Aragorn, but is there any special reason that Theoden and Co. slip in? How does it impact the visual?

2.) How does this shot's framing reflect Aragorn and Theoden's relationship?

3.) Any other thoughts?

well...

As for Theoden & co. in the shot, we have to remember that Jackson sometimes seems to spend a lot of time framing his central figures; it may just have made a nice picture. But the film does a nice job with the subplot involving Theoden's concern for Eowyn and his changing attitudes toward Aragorn. After Eowyn laughs at the joke, she looks back at Theoden. With all that was jettisoned to keep things moving, it's nice to see a little time spent on the human side of things.

Yay, SCOD!

I think it is meant to remind us that Theoden is still unsure what to think of Aragorn, especially after their disagreement. But he also sees that Eowyn seems taken with him which bears weight with him as he knows Eowyn isn't easily impressed. So he's studying him. He knows who Aragorn is and that as the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor, he, Theoden, must respect him. However, as a loving uncle, he wants to protect Eowyn from heartbreak...or not. Smile

Anyway, hooray for the return of SCOD! Smile

A watchful eye

Theoden certainly seems to be keeping a watchful eye on Aragorn. For one, he can see that Eowyn likes - or is beginning to like - Aragorn. And he also isn't quite sure what to make of Aragorn yet, I think. One the one hand, they are almost on an equal footing, with Theoden being king and Arogorn being a king in waiting, but on the other hand, he might still be a bit wary of Aragorn taking over.

I like the light-heartedness and humour in the scene though. Such a contrast to all the serious business that happens not long after.

Also, I love the kind of armour on the horses' heads (I'm sure there is a more technical term for those things, but I have no clue). The details on those are wonderful.

It's a nice placement of Aragorn in foreground and Théoden in background. Not only this, but that Théoden and his guards seem to be sternly looking forward at Aragorn. Interesting!
Nice impact, us looking at a group of people looking at a person, looking at something off screen towards us WinkTongue

2.) How does this shot's framing reflect Aragorn and Theoden's relationship?
I like this meaning indeed. Théoden is looking at Aragorn with possible bemusement, but also with a sense of pride of his own Rohirric Royal Heritage, as if he has to prove and maintain the royal character/appearance around Aragorn...
seeing as Aragorn is the inheritor of the throne of Gondor.... ultimately the nation which Rohan owe allegiance to, and which the relationship has cooled/soured in the past decades/centuries.
Therefore, it is difficult for Théoden with Aragorn, there are many implications implied by their relationship. Or perhaps I am taking a very cynical view Wink

3.) Any other thoughts?
Aragorn's pose is PRICELESS Laugh such a hilarious face

SCOD-Its the beards

It took a lot of convincing to move Theoden to decide to move his people to Helms Deep and again to come to the aid of Gondor.

Theoden's bodyguard would die for their king. their body language says it all, completely alert to their surroundings and aware of the safety of their king. I think Theoden's head should have been helmed for the journey just like his horse and two of his bodyguards.

Despite the absence of Eomer and the affection his niece has for Aragorn, I can't help but think that Theoden senses the burden placed upon Aragorn's shoulders and probably would want to offer advice as only an elder statesman could.

2.) How does this shot's framing reflect Aragorn and Theoden's relationship?

Do I detect a growing sense of trust developing between the two at the absence of Eomer and Aragorn may indeed remind Theoden in some small way of his own son Theodred.

Aragorn is in his element

he obviously feels at ease enough to joke around a bit. He's slowly easing into the role of king, becoming more comfortable with it. Theoden, not so much right then. He'll come around, though.
