Possibly my last HFR 3D viewing before it departs the theaters

This morning I had the theater all to myself - which meant that I could join right in on Misty Mountains!

Pardon me if these things have been said before, but a few observations leaped out at me:

Atop the Carrock, at the moment Thorin lifts his eyes from Bilbo and spots the Lonely Mountain all the others have their backs turned as they watch the eagles fly off - all except Bilbo, who looked at Thorin as they broke their embrace, saw Thorin's face change, and turned to see what had caught his eye.

The white warg has the same ritual scarring as Azog - two slashes above each eye and slashes on the shoulders and flanks, all evenly spaced and even lengths - in other words, not battle scars.

Is the yellowish seat cushion on the bench outside Bag End - the one Bilbo sits on to smoke at the beginning of the movie -the same one as the orange cushion the younger Bilbo is sitting on, only faded with the years? I guess it would be too much of a stretch to think it had lasted 60 years, though. Never mind!

I love the attention to detail, like the way the hedge/shrub has grown tall and thick behind that same bench.

As Bilbo opens the door to his first two visitors I love the contrast between Dwalin, whose intimidating appearance, fierce look and gruff voice belie his "at your service," and his brother Balin who gives Bilbo a big smile and a grand bow and then remarks on the night and the possiblity of rain later rather than Bilbo's lapse of manners in not replying "at yours."

I also love Dwalin asking Balin if he has eaten and Balin replying "I could eat again" - or is it the other way around?

Dori always says "Mr. Gandalf," even when he's about to plunge to his death from the pine tree.

The music! The way it changes to horns when Dwalin says of Thorin "He will come - "he is late, is all." The way the music swells as Gandalf hands the key to Thorin - which, by the way, reminds me very strongly of the music that crescendos when the fellowship first sees the great halls of Moria. The dwarf mischief music - what I think of as the plate music! - when Fili and Kili hoist Bilbo up on Myrtle, when Bofur tosses Bilbo his substitute for the missing pocket handkerchief. The single, sudden violin note as Gandalf catches his purse of winnings from his bet on Bilbo. The music when the eagles are soaring over the land (is it the same music as when Frodo and Sam are similarly rescued from Mt. Doom?), the familiar theme (Nazgul music?) when Thorin strides down from the pine to challenge Azog. . . such a mix of wonderful new music and some favorites from the LOTR trilogy that just make the movie so much more. . . ! And one of my favorite moments is when there is NO music - not any sound at all, in fact - as Bilbo stands in his empty, quiet home and realizes that it is TOO empty, TOO quiet, and suddenly decides to run out his front door to whatever adventure awaits - with the accompaniment of suddenly very loud, very lively music!

Bifur toasting with a tankard of salad greens.

Bofur grabbing the sausages around Nori's neck and using them to play tug o'war with him. Bofur has the most playful spirit of all of them - he's the jokester/prankster.

The first time we see Ori drinking from his tankard he is using two hands to hold it, which makes him look very young.

When Balin comments that they are not the brightest, someone calls out "Who are you calling dim?"

That moment when Bilbo realizes that Gandalf holds him in high regard - "He's got a great deal more to offer than any of you know - including himself!"

Bilbo's almost giddy smile when Balin formally welcomes him to the company of Thorin Oakenshield.

Thorin's scornful "No you didn't. You know nothing of the world" to Kili's "didn't mean anything by it." His voice cuts Kili just like a knife.

Balin's face and voice when he says of Azog "He began by beheading the king."

Azog is HUGE, immensely strong and vicious. He would be perfect in a Quentin Tarantino film. And every time I see him kneel after Thorin cuts off his forearm I wish Thorin would get up and cut off his other arm as well. Or perhaps his leg. Legs. And then my mind goes all Monty Python on me and I think of the black knight. . . *sigh*

Dori's "Here now, Mr. Gandalf, can't you do something about this deluge?" and Gandalf's voice/delivery when replying "It is raining, Master Dwarf, and it will continue to rain until the rain is DONE!"

That big bright blue crystal in Radagast's staff.

The huge webs in the woods visible in the first shot of Dol Goldur.

Kili's put-on innocence as he assures Bilbo "It's perfectly safe. We'll be right behind you!"

Tom the troll cleans his fingernails with a huge knife. Bert the cook is wearing an apron! And just as William says "Make him (Bilbo) squeal" Kili stabs him in the back of his leg and makes HIM squeal instead.

One of the best lines in the movie is Bilbo's "You're going to need something stronger than sage before you plate this lot up!"

Another: "we're making a long term deposit" as they bury the chest of gold in the troll cave.

The way the first two warg scouts leap straight for Thorin.

Bombur getting wedged in the narrow passage leading to the hidden valley and Bifur dislodging him with a push from behind.

As the elves ride in to Rivendell on their horses the dwarves push Bilbo behind them, and Dwalin pulls Ori back a bit as well.

I love Elrond's criss-cross purple armor.

Gandalf freezes when he first hears Saruman's voice behind him, then closes his eyes, takes a breath and fixes a false smile on his face as he turns around, all with Elrond looking on with a bemused, sympathetic smile as if he knew precisely how Gandalf would react to find Saruman there. And the very next shot is of a very weary Gandalf at sunrise, looking as though he'd been questioned and called to defend his actions all night long.

Saruman has a lot of nerve criticizing Radagast for yellowing teeth, since his own are not exactly models of good dental hygiene.

The Great Goblin has a ram's skull scepter - or is it? It has tusks in addition to the curly horns. There's a pile of skeletons on a little cart next to his throne - remains of a meal or snacks? Ick.

The little messenger goblin perched on the zip line looks as though he has arms for legs.

Bilbo hears Gollum with the orc he has dragged away, and as he advances toward the sound he suddenly sees his sword glowing bright blue and immediately points it as far down as he can without sheathing it, realizing that it will give him away.

Bilbo's courduroy coat has some threadbare spots after his tumble into Gollum's cavern.

Bilbo's face and his raised sword as he goes on high alert while watching Gollum figure out what Bilbo has in his pocket.

Balin fights the goblins with such smooth grace and style, almost like a dancer. Oin just flings his staff around in a circle. Bombur becomes a whirling dervish. And Thorin seems to like his new sword!

I love the eagle fanning the flames with his great wings, immolating several wargs and goblins in the ensuing firestorm.

Bombur is dangling from an eagle's talons in the background as Bilbo lands and looks at Thorin.

The dwarves cheer when Thorin hugs Bilbo - before that they are completely silent and watchful. And Dwalin leans on his axe, apparently relieved to find that Thorin was not ungrateful to Bilbo after all.

As the thrush flies toward Erebor all the vegetation is dried and dead, and the trees that are left are scorched sticks. And from gramma I knew that as the thrush bashed one snail against the rock wall the other retreated into its shell, but this time I noticed a much bigger snail on the side of the rock retreating inward as well.

I don't know how many times I've seen this movie now - something between 8 and 12 - but I wish it were going to be around longer because I still find it completely mesmerizing from start to finish.

Thank you for bearing with me. I love this movie. Love it, love it, love it.

Possibly MY last 3D HFR viewing as well

I'm so sad! Starting this Friday it will no longer be shown in the 3D HFR format, only the regular 2D. Which I've seen twice, and which by comparison is more than occasionally blurry and the colors are washed out and the brightness is too glaring. Sigh. So I may have to go One Last Time this Thursday night, even though it's a work night. I've seen it 15 times, and honestly, I could see it every weekend as long as it played in 3D HFR. I don't know if I'll go much to the regular 2D showings. Oh, I probably will.

Thanks for the great run-down of various moments! I can picture every one you mention!

And so all good things must come to an end.

I'm facing the same thing here soon, I think; though the two theatres in the area that had the HFR to start with still have it, and I believe not the 2D; so maybe they'll still have HFR another week or two. One other theater (the cheaper one, since everyone's afraid to go to it because of earthquakes) still has it in 2D. Hoping to make it once or twice more before the HFR is gone for good.

Love all your observations, Tintallë.

Balin's line: "He began by beheading the king" was beautifully delivered. You can tell Balin finds those words hard to say, and the memory painful; that wasn't just "the" king, it was his king.

Kili looks so crestfallen and dejected after Thorin's reprimand ("No you didn't; you know nothing of the world") that I just want to give him a cuddle. He's been thoroughly deflated. Did you notice how he had been working on something -- cleaning his pipe? or whittling something out of wood? I haven't yet been able to tell -- before the reprimand, but afterwards, it appears he doesn't go back to working on it; he just sits there looking miserable.

And the first two warg scouts leaping -- they really are leaping at Thorin, aren't they? That suggests they really are targeting him, and that somehow they recognize him. Interesting.

Did you notice how, just before the trolls when Gandalf and Thorin have their testy exchange about visiting Rivendell, ending when Gandalf stalks off in disgust -- Thorin has his hand on the hilt of his sword the entire time? Not that he'd use it, of course, but it just subtly emphasizes how strongly he feels about regarding elves as The Enemy -- and how stubborn he is with this viewpoint.

Still haven't managed to notice Bifur toasting with salad greens. There must be something else in that moment that I can't tear my eyes from!

Ok now you've made me want to see it again

I've only seen it twice so far but as of yesterday it's still playing in my area. Maybe I'll call the theater today to find out when the last show will be. Unlike gramma, I don't have the theater people calling me with this info. Wink

I didn't notice that!

Thorin's hand on his sword as he argues with Gandalf about going to Rivendell - I never noticed that. I was probably too busy swooning over his voice. That voice. Those eyes. That hair - and I know it's yak hair but it's still - guh.

What was I saying? Oh yes, Thorin's hand on his sword. I'll have to look for that as well as whatever it is Kili is doing when he teases Bilbo with visions of orc raids and blood. Kili always looks to Thorin for cues and for leadership, I think, and there's both love and awe in his manner much of the time.

Oh I am in for some serious heartbreak in the upcoming movies. I'd better lay in a supply of waterproof mascara.

Me too

Going to see it one last time tomorrow - most likely by myself in the theater....but one thing I noticed in previous viewings is that there is not a lot of dialogue time with the other dwarves. I mean we literally get no dialog from Bombur, Bifur, Nori, Oin, etc. I just started to see this after trying to recall is say Nori said ANYTHING in the movie aside from a yell or battle cry. Maybe I am just imagining this??

His hand on his hilt...

I don't really see it as a menacing gesture...it's natural for someone to rest or bear weight on an object that is there, so to speak. An example is when women are pregnant...they tend to rest their hands or arms on their stomachs. Same with canes...if I handed you a cane, whether you needed it or not, you'd put your weight against it. That's how I saw this scene...I never once imagined he was actually thinking about it.

2D here

in the times slots I can go. Only four in yesterday's show, so seating rocked. Starting to like Bifur so much: doesn't say much, does dishes, good with a spear....what's not to love?

Aiming for 13 shows. Almost there.

Thank you for a great post! So fun to read.

Nori

Nori speaks twice during the whole film (as far as I noticed). Once he says only "Yes" as an answer to Gloin and then at the end when Gandalf wants to know the whereabouts of the burglar he says "I thought he was with Dori." But it took me a while to realise he said anything at all.

I've seen it six times now, 2D, 3D, and 3D HFR. The last one was on monday, but only in 2D. I would have preferred HFR, but most cinemas have already pulled it out. Watching it on your own has definitely some advantages as there are less distractions from other people. I once saw it in the afternoon and I was the only one in the room. And though it was only 2D, everything around me was so dark and quiet that I was right in the story. It was fantastic (and quite scary at times).
I will have to wait till the DVD comes out now.

I wish you all a great last viewing (at least for now). Smile

Other Dwarves

Bifur speaks to Gandalf during the party in Bag End (not compehensibly, also using getsures). I believe that the filmmakers' backstory for him includes damage (from the axe in his forehead!) that affects the language areas of his brain so in his case there is a deliberate choice that this is a character who will not be doing a lot of verbal communication.

Oin is the one who has "read the portents" - that the birds are returning to the mountain and it is a propitious time for the quest. He speaks regarding this at Bag End, and also at the Carrock (when he misidentifies a thrush as a raven, perhaps because his ear trumpet has been squashed by a goblin). Nori is the one who sees Bilbo sneak away when the goblins come (this is shown in the relevant scene), and has a line about this when Bilbo's absence is noted by Gandalf after they leave the Goblin caves. You're right about Bombur.

But certainly some Dwarves get a lot more lines!

I'm a little shocked it is still even showing at all

the local cinemas round me got rid of it almost two weeks ago. even the big cinema near me only has one showing left - 2D.

Still lucky you to live where they are showing it still in HFR Smile

Nori is the one who says "I think I saw him slip away when they first collared us". I'm not sure who says "I thought he was with Dori", though- they are off screen.

It matches up to the moment when Bilbo slips away from the Goblins, too. Nori is shown looking back at that moment, so he would be the one who would know this.

Bifur's brain

You are probably right. I've noticed the scar on the left temple extending to the parietal area. Think they are going for left frontal and a Broca injury, with the speech and flat affect.

Yes, well the last opportunity for me is today

and I can't go because RL calls.

I'm in San Diego, and only 2 of the gazillion theaters in this county are showing it in HFR 3D; one is 15 minutes from my front door in Carlsbad and the other - the one I went to yesterday - is an older theater smack dab in the middle of downtown San Diego. I have not yet checked to see if it will be anywere in any format next week. I have never seen it in anything but HFR 3D and I'm kind of afraid to in case I find it too different an experience. I probably will if it's available, though.

Grizzly Bear Carrock

I've seen it 4 times, all in HFR3D, except the fourth time. I'm not sure if this has been brought up yet, but in certain shots you can see that the carrock is carved in a way to resemble a roaring grizzly bear. In different shots you can see the ears, nose and open mouth pointing slightly upward. I didn't notice this until my fourth viewing and thought it was a nice touch to hint at Beorn for the next film. If you haven't seen this yet, try not to watch the eagles and observe the carrock....you'll see what I'm talking about. It's been a year since I read the book, so I wasn't sure if the carrock was described that way or not. Anyone else see this?

Just found out...

AUJ is leaving our Big Three theatres on Tuesday. I don't think it will be playing at any of the little independent theaters...not sure we have any left after the earthquakes, actually, and I'm sure whatever ones are still around think they have better things to play. Sadness. I'm going to try to work in #13 (13 viewings, 13 dwarves...seems fitting!) Monday or Tuesday. Then it's all down to waiting for the DVD!

13 seems like the perfect number of viewings!

I don't even know how many times I went - something more than 8 and fewer than 12. There's one more in HFR 3D tonight at 10:55 p.m. but I can't go. I have to get up at 5 a.m. for work, and no one wants to be cared for by an ICU nurse who hasn't had enough sleep the night before!

One Last Time

Well, I went after work last night to watch it in 3D HFR for the last time it is playing in that format. (sob!) Now I will have to be content with seeing it in regular 2D. (sigh) until it leaves theaters altogether, which I suspect will be soon.

And then the long dark of waiting until DOS next year begins. (double sigh)

What a lovely list of observations!

Newcomer here. I joined so that I could thank you and all the other posters whose comments have helped me catch so many small details each time I see the film. And each time, it's a richer experience. We may have 3D HFR here for one more week, so I may get to 12 total viewings -- here's hoping!

Don't know whether these have already been mentioned, but here's what I noted when I saw it yesterday:

Bilbo's mailbox -- love the design, wish I could have one just like it!

The soot mark on the wall above the candle in the room where (Holm's) Bilbo is finishing his 'No Admittance' sign. The set designers have thought of absolutely every detail!

For the very first time, I managed to drag my eyes away from Thorin as he enters Bag End and see the little deferential bows given by Dori and Ori standing off to the side. Thorin's old friend Dwalin, standing between them, does not bow.

I love how literally Balin responds to Bilbo during the Bag End scene:
Bilbo - Good evening
Balin - Yes. Yes, it is. Although I think it might rain later.
Bilbo - I'm sorry.
Balin - Apology accepted.
Such a great little contrast moment in the script after Gandalf's riff on the various meanings of 'Good morning'.

At Elrond's table, I was so glad to see that Gandalf had a nice large glass of red wine!

And back to Thorin (not hard at all!). I love the quick lookover that Thorin gives Bilbo after the bear hug on The Carrock. When he releases Bilbo (and before saying 'I am sorry I doubted you'), he takes a second to look him up and down and confirm that Bilbo really is uninjured. This look, the very direct apology, and Bilbo's equally direct response ('not a hero, not a warrior, not even a burgler') are just so beautifully handled by both Armitage and Freeman.

Oh my, these are wonderful!!

So many, I just have to share a squeeee with you :-)

This morning I had the theater all to myself - which meant that I could join right in on Misty Mountains!
All to yourself?! That's awesome - I've been close, but not actually the only one, not yet. Did you go during the day or at an odd time?

Pardon me if these things have been said before, but a few observations leaped out at me:

Atop the Carrock, at the moment Thorin lifts his eyes from Bilbo and spots the Lonely Mountain all the others have their backs turned as they watch the eagles fly off - all except Bilbo, who looked at Thorin as they broke their embrace, saw Thorin's face change, and turned to see what had caught his eye.
Isn't the change of expression on Thorin's face so subtle and so amazing? I *do not* know how RA does that, under all those prosthetics.

The white warg has the same ritual scarring as Azog - two slashes above each eye and slashes on the shoulders and flanks, all evenly spaced and even lengths - in other words, not battle scars.
Have not noted this anywhere - this is a fantastic observation - this needs to go on gramma's Geeky Observation List.

Never mind!
You know, it might be the same cushion. In light of him keeping so many antiques around Bag End - there's the line about the house being in the family for years, and also about his mother's glory box, and the dishes, etc., I wouldn't be surprised if he would keep the same cushion.

I love the attention to detail, like the way the hedge/shrub has grown tall and thick behind that same bench.
I can't wait for the DVD to be able to hit Pause and watch this type of detail. I can't believe you caught this while watching in the theater!

As Bilbo opens the door to his first two visitors I love the contrast between Dwalin, whose intimidating appearance, fierce look and gruff voice belie his "at your service," and his brother Balin who gives Bilbo a big smile and a grand bow and then remarks on the night and the possibility of rain later rather than Bilbo's lapse of manners in not replying "at yours."
I *love* Balin's "although, I think it might rain later". The delivery on this, and on Dwalin's "No..." when he first walked in - were perfect choices of inflection and phrasing.

I also love Dwalin asking Balin if he has eaten and Balin replying "I could eat again" - or is it the other way around?
Another observation I have to watch for!

Dori always says "Mr. Gandalf," even when he's about to plunge to his death from the pine tree.
Poor Dori, reminds me of a person who tut-tuts about the lack of manners of these young folks today Sly.

The music! The way it changes to horns when Dwalin says of Thorin "He will come - "he is late, is all."
Noted! So mysterious, so evocative - where has he been off to, that he is late?

The way the music swells as Gandalf hands the key to Thorin - which, by the way, reminds me very strongly of the music that crescendos when the fellowship first sees the great halls of Moria.
I do believe this is the same theme! Reflecting the former majesty of the dwarves, alas ...

The dwarf mischief music - what I think of as the plate music! - when Fili and Kili hoist Bilbo up on Myrtle, when Bofur tosses Bilbo his substitute for the missing pocket handkerchief.
"Dwarf mischief" theme - that's a handy phrase for that music, I like it Laugh !

The single, sudden violin note as Gandalf catches his purse of winnings from his bet on Bilbo. The music when the eagles are soaring over the land (is it the same music as when Frodo and Sam are similarly rescued from Mt. Doom?), the familiar theme (Nazgul music?) when Thorin strides down from the pine to challenge Azog. . . such a mix of wonderful new music and some favorites from the LOTR trilogy that just make the movie so much more. . . !
I believe this eagles music is reminiscent of the eagles music in ROTK, but new/different. I'm looking forward to those music discussions (someday :-)) which show how the music from TH trilogy relates to the LOTR trilogy.

And one of my favorite moments is when there is NO music - not any sound at all, in fact - as Bilbo stands in his empty, quiet home and realizes that it is TOO empty, TOO quiet,
It's amazing how people project their *own* reasons for leaving (why they personally would go on the adventure) into this sudden silence. Just fascinating.

and suddenly decides to run out his front door to whatever adventure awaits - with the accompaniment of suddenly very loud, very lively music!
Is this the Shortcut to Mushrooms music? It sounded similar to me.

Bifur toasting with a tankard of salad greens.
Oh, that settles it, I definitely have to go see it again. I missed this, lol!

Bofur grabbing the sausages around Nori's neck and using them to play tug o'war with him. Bofur has the most playful spirit of all of them - he's the jokester/prankster.
I love how that prankster personality just surfaced out of nowhere. What a wonderful portrayal.

The first time we see Ori drinking from his tankard he is using two hands to hold it, which makes him look very young.
It's wonderful that they had the scribe and recorder of tales be this sweet, loopy character. Someone like that would have that reverence for the heroic.

When Balin comments that they are not the brightest, someone calls out "Who are you calling dim?"
Similar to how, when they are roasting over the trolls' fire, and someone says, "You can't reason with them, they're half-wits!", I think it's Bofur who says, "What does that make us??"

That moment when Bilbo realizes that Gandalf holds him in high regard - "He's got a great deal more to offer than any of you know - including himself!"
That double-take. Would that we all had a wizard at our side to be confident in us, to assure us that we had more inside to offer than we ourselves knew.

Bilbo's almost giddy smile when Balin formally welcomes him to the company of Thorin Oakenshield.
lol. Get him a pony, indeed.

Thorin's scornful "No you didn't. You know nothing of the world" to Kili's "didn't mean anything by it." His voice cuts Kili just like a knife.
*sniff!* Poor Kili!

Balin's face and voice when he says of Azog "He began by beheading the king."
Oh I know, I know. His voice trembled, it was as if he couldn't bring himself to say the words. Perfect.

Azog is HUGE, immensely strong and vicious. He would be perfect in a Quentin Tarantino film. And every time I see him kneel after Thorin cuts off his forearm I wish Thorin would get up and cut off his other arm as well. Or perhaps his leg. Legs. And then my mind goes all Monty Python on me and I think of the black knight. . . *sigh*
I wished he'd just cut off his head. Would that he had...sigh.

Dori's "Here now, Mr. Gandalf, can't you do something about this deluge?" and Gandalf's voice/delivery when replying "It is raining, Master Dwarf, and it will continue to rain until the rain is DONE!"

I got the impression Dori had a very nice, comfortable house, back there in the Blue Mountains. Perhaps with central a/c and heating Wink.

That big bright blue crystal in Radagast's staff.
Very handy and multi-purpose, that crystal!

The huge webs in the woods visible in the first shot of Dol Goldur.

Going to see more of those in DOS, we know that! Webs and dwarf hair just do *not* mix....

Kili's put-on innocence as he assures Bilbo "It's perfectly safe. We'll be right behind you!"
This is my favorite comic line from the film. We have used this in our house, for all kinds of purposes. In fact, I wish I could use it work Tongue. It was great Sly!!

Tom the troll cleans his fingernails with a huge knife. Bert the cook is wearing an apron! And just as William says "Make him (Bilbo) squeal" Kili stabs him in the back of his leg and makes HIM squeal instead.
Let the flurgaburrahobbit talk!

One of the best lines in the movie is Bilbo's "You're going to need something stronger than sage before you plate this lot up!"
I love the wording, and it's still in keeping with the moment. And the faces he makes -- "he's got worms ... in his ........ tubes!!"

Another: "we're making a long term deposit" as they bury the chest of gold in the troll cave.
Dwalin's eye roll here makes the scene. I love Dwalin. I do go swoon-y over Thorin and all, but I just love Dwalin too, lol.

The way the first two warg scouts leap straight for Thorin.
True! I wonder if they were on his scent or something?

Bombur getting wedged in the narrow passage leading to the hidden valley and Bifur dislodging him with a push from behind. As the elves ride in to Rivendell on their horses the dwarves push Bilbo behind them, and Dwalin pulls Ori back a bit as well. I love Elrond's criss-cross purple armor.
I loved that flinging-off-the-cape gesture he does before he dismounts. Why I find that fascinating, I do not know!

This is so true-to-life....committee meetings! gaaaah.....

Saruman has a lot of nerve criticizing Radagast for yellowing teeth, since his own are not exactly models of good dental hygiene.
lol... the pot calling the kettle - yellow Sly?

The Great Goblin has a ram's skull scepter - or is it? It has tusks in addition to the curly horns. There's a pile of skeletons on a little cart next to his throne - remains of a meal or snacks? Ick. The little messenger goblin perched on the zip line looks as though he has arms for legs. Bilbo hears Gollum with the orc he has dragged away, and as he advances toward the sound he suddenly sees his sword glowing bright blue and immediately points it as far down as he can without sheathing it, realizing that it will give him away.
And it goes out as soon as the Orc dies! Nice touch.

Bilbo's courduroy coat has some threadbare spots after his tumble into Gollum's cavern. Bilbo's face and his raised sword as he goes on high alert while watching Gollum figure out what Bilbo has in his pocket.
The dawning look of fear as he realizes what Gollum is frantic about!

Balin fights the goblins with such smooth grace and style, almost like a dancer. Oin just flings his staff around in a circle. Bombur becomes a whirling dervish. And Thorin seems to like his new sword!
This is definitely a scene that has to be seen in HFR. It's mostly a blur until you see it in HFR and then you catch all the differences between what they're doing, and all the detail!

I love the eagle fanning the flames with his great wings, immolating several wargs and goblins in the ensuing firestorm. Bombur is dangling from an eagle's talons in the background as Bilbo lands and looks at Thorin.
The eagle rescue was exquisite - the music, the camera soaring over the landscape, the detail of the eagles' feathers and the sounds of their wings, and then that moment when the one whooshes by into view, with the unconscious Thorin....

The dwarves cheer when Thorin hugs Bilbo - before that they are completely silent and watchful. And Dwalin leans on his axe, apparently relieved to find that Thorin was not ungrateful to Bilbo after all.
Yes.... Dwalin has been through a lot with Thorin and knows him so well...

I'm so glad they chose to include these small details - we *know* they did it for the fans Sly.

I don't know how many times I've seen this movie now - something between 8 and 12 - but I wish it were going to be around longer because I still find it completely mesmerizing from start to finish.
I'm at 7, but I know I'm going to catch it a few more times before it's gone from the theaters. I just wish they still had the HFR version!!!!!!!!!!! UnsureFrown

Thank you for bearing with me. I love this movie. Love it, love it, love it.
Thank *you* for posting all these details! It was like watching it along with you. I feel the same way Heart.

*sigh* This is my last list from my theatre viewings

Pardon if there are dups to what has already been mentioned. I've been going through ALL the lists and updating the complete list... which will be posted this weekend :D

It looks like there's a tattoo between Thráin's eyes, possibly to adorn the damage to his left eye.

Balin Bows. Our first glimpse of Balin shows him bowing.

Bofur likes to throw food at Bombur. An egg during dinner, and a sausage in Rivendell.

When Gandalf is talking with Bilbo about getting used to the Dwarves while standing in front of the fireplace, Dwalin is sitting on the hearth with his feet up.

When the Dwarves start singing about what Bilbo hates, Bofur (blunt the knives), Nori, Gloin and Dori (?) start the song when sitting at the table and thumping the silverware on the table while stomping their feet.

During the meeting with Thorin Nori, Bofur, and Gandalf are smoking their pipe. Gloin starts out with a pipe, but quickly loses it.

The seating of the Dwarves, from our left to the right: Gandalf, Dwalin, Bifur, Oin, Fili, Kili, Bombur (at end), Ori, Dori, Nori, Gloin, Balin, Bofur and Thorin at the head of the table

Gandalf works very hard to make the dwarves believe everything is alright where Bilbo is concerned. As Bilbo reads the contract, Gandalf is smiling, quietly chuckling and looking around the table.

When Thorin first arrives, Gandalf is smiling and very nervous as Bilbo talks with Thorin and is obviously relieved but nervous about Thorin's first impressions and discussion with the Hobbit.

Not all of the Dwarves are singing. Thorin, Bofur, and Balin are clearly singing. The rest of the Dwarves are humming along.

While Bofur is playing the flute, Dwalin is playing the fiddle, Dori is drumming on the table.

Bilbo's suspenders cross at his back.

When Bilbo runs out to join the Dwarves, you can see 2 hobbits fishing at the pond below.

Just like Sam in LotR when he's carrying the kettle of food at Amon Sûl, Bilbo is carrying around bowls of food.

Tom's eyes (suspenders/has cold) don't work together. They tend to track in separate directions.

The Troll tosses Bilbo at Kili, diffusing him as a threat.

Thorin tries to loosen the knot of the bag he's tied in with his teeth when the Troll is talking about using sage to season the Dwarves.

Bilbo resents being called a "ferret" by the Trolls.

The thorny vines grow around the neck of the sword-grasping statue like a noose.

Gandalf sticks his pipe in his belt to take the wrapped blade from Radagast.

Bilbo looks confused, overwhelmed and jostled when the Dwarves are first quick to be insulted then discuss and accept the invite to dinner.

14 Rhosgobel rabbits? *itches for pause button*

The narrow, rocky passage the Company travels through is carved through the top of a long cliff that leads to Rivendell.

The Dwarves are merrier than the Elves.

When the Stone Giant starts moving, Dwalin grabs hold of Ori and Bilbo.

It's so hobbity for Bilbo to drop and hide in the open when the goblins are herding the Dwarves to the Great Goblin.

Like when he was dealing with the Trolls, Bilbo is able to hide in the open

As Bilbo drops out of sight, you can still hear his sword clanking against the rocks

The Goblin Scribe's feet look deformed

When Bilbo talks about helping the Dwarves take their home back, it looks like this is the first time they all so poignantly feel their homelessness

Who tosses Balin into the tree?

Gandalf lights the pinecone by blowing through the head of his staff that's shaped like a flame.

Gandalf growls has he throws that first fiery pinecone.

Bilbo is grabbed and thrown by the white warg the same way Thorin was

When Thorin begins walking along the top of the Carrock to look at the distant Lonely Mountain, he grimaces and holds his right arm tight to his side.

sampleWishes you a Happy Groundhog Day!

Ninth time

I love the look on EW's face when he is looking through Bilbo's open chest - he blinks out of curiousity and its so endearing.

Radagast having mismatched shoes.

Bifur actually looking present and happy watching the eagles wheel away.

Bofur always ALWAYS having Bilbo's back. Think that's why he gets "first watch" in the cave. (Thorin tired of hearing about burglar.)

Everyone having Ori's back in the Trollshaw. I lost count of how many Dwarves rescue him. But he still has the courage to grab Bilbo first when he falls in the mountains.

Can't wait for view ten. Aiming for fourteen.

A book tie-in

Just an observation: the narrow, rocky passage to get to Rivendell reminds of this, part of the description of the path there from the book:

"They came on unexpected valleys, narrow with steep sides, that opened suddenly at their feet, and they looked down surprised to see trees below them and running water at the bottom. There were gullies that they could almost leap over, but very deep with waterfalls in them. There were dark ravines that one could neither jump over nor climb into."

Apparently Gandalf has led them into one of these ravines!

Howdy and Welcome!

I love your observation about Balin taking Bilbo's comments literally, comparing it to Bilbo's "Good mornings" with Gandalf! Awesome! AND Thorin checking to see that Bilbo was okay.

THANKS!

Delivery

Quote
Gandalf's voice/delivery when replying "It is raining, Master Dwarf, and it will continue to rain until the rain is DONE!"

There are a lot of moments I like for their emotional impact, or tension, or humor. But there are a few I like just for the way they are said and the tone of voice. One example is Gandalf saying "of course they will" in response to Thorin's concern about the elves. I don't know why, but I just love the way he says it. Another example is Bilbo saying "that's no concern of yours."

"that's no concern of yours."

I love that too -- thanks for the reminder! And speaking of line delivery, don't you also just love the way Freeman gives freshness to that very old riddle "Thirty White Horses"? His tone, his pauses, and the way he nearly whispers as he draws out the last line ("then they stand still") and "sketches" it with his fingers. And then he quickly licks his own teeth after Gollum guesses the riddle (Teeeef!) and bares his 9 fangs. Freeman is so subtle with his voice, facial expressions, and body language, but every single one of his scenes makes Bilbo feel so real to me!

Yes indeed!

Completely agree about the riddle! It was brilliant.

I don't often take notice of actors, but I love Martin Freeman's Bilbo. He *is* Bilbo for me. And that's more than I could have hoped for. I'm not familiar with his other work but I will definitely be looking into it.

Viewing 5 for me on Saturday

And it was HFR - in fact, I think 2D has gone out of the main cinema in my city and now they're just showing it in HFR which is great! And I was surprised to see how many people were pouring in still - I was semi-expecting to be in there by myself but I'd say there were between 50 and 100 people (not very good with guessing people numbers at the best of times, and most of them were sitting behind me).

Anyway, I just have a couple of observations to add:

* Galadriel's fingernails are exactly the same as in Fellowship! That might sound odd - but I noticed when she gives Frodo the Light of Earendil that they were quite round and prettily coloured. When she takes Gandalf's hands in AUJ, they're just the same. There we go, that's the weird one out of the way Blush
* Sorry if this has been noted already - I did a search for it, but typing 'lost, lost' into the search function gave me 2592 results. Once the riddle game is over, Bilbo tells Gollum that he lost. Gollum says 'Lost? Lost?' in an increasingly threatening tone of voice and that's when he starts feeling at his hip for the ring. So this 'Lost?' quickly becomes 'Lost!' when he realises that his precious is missing - I thought it was a great transition.

That is all. Except to say thanks for your observations too Tintallë - it's wonderful to read what people have noticed and to relive the film in a small way, in between viewings!

I just noticed Galadriel's fingernails last night!

I would never have made the connection with LOTR - thanks for that!

I never noticed the "lost" transition either, so I'll look for that next time. Although I thought the HFR 3D was disappearing from my local theaters as of last Friday, it turns out I was wrong so I am happily trekking back for another go when I can. My budget can't take many more theater tickets, though!

Having just looked at some pictures online

I feel like I should change my statement slightly. Her nails look longer in FOTR. So maybe I should say that they're recognisable as Galadriel's rather than exactly the same. Anyway, that's just the silly perfectionist in me speaking.

I know, it's the price that's keeping me from going more often too. I've paid for 4 out of my 5 viewings and in HFR that's quite a hefty sum already. Roll on DVD release date Smile

I love the contrast of

her soft, lovely hands against Gandalf's weathered, hardened hands. So wonderful. I'm a Hands person... like when Theoden gathers Eowyn's hands into his and tells her, "No more despair." *sigh* Holding hands is so sweetly intimate and accepting of others.

Thanks for the observation, Elvanui :)

Lost? Lost!

Thanks for pointing that out. You're right -- it's a great transition in the script.
And regarding Galadriel's lovely fingers -- don't you just love the gesture Gandalf makes with his own fingers as she withdraws hers. Reaching out just a bit as if he needs to prolong contact just a moment more. But she's gone.
