For me, I liked not seeing what was in there -- that way I could imagine something worse than the other bad-guy places we saw. It kind of helped to keep Sauron a bit more "mysterious" as the biggest and baddest guy, which I felt was in line with the book where Tolkien gives so few details. I know why they gave us the visual of the "eye" in the films, as they had to show "something" to visualize Sauron, but that imagery was a lot more effective to read about than see, I think. So not seeing everything helped to get a little of the unknown power of Sauron back, for me. I suspect though that the major reason the films did not show it was because they did not need to, have the money for, or the time to create it or include it in the films! Interesting to speculate on, thanks for posting this and hope to see more of you on this forum!
