How do you eat your apple?

A funny poll inspired by one of DanielLB's comments in Gramma's (mega-awesome) geeky observations thread on the Hobbit boards Wink

I personally eat the whole thing, just not the stick hehe

It depends on the type of apple

Cortlands or MacIntosh generally, if they are very sweet and softish, I'll eat every bit of flesh leaving only the seeds and the husk around the seeds.

Slices

I don't eat them unless I cut them into slices. And I definitely don't eat the core or seeds.

It's the same with cheese; I can't eat it unless it's in thin slices. I hate chunks.

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall and the bells in the steeple, too.
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird is popping out to say coo-coo (coo-coo, coo-coo).

If I have time

I cut it up and savour it. I especially like to eat an apple with some nice sharp cheddar.
I've never been keen on eating the core, but I do have very fond memories of my mother cutting apples in half for me so that the core looked like a star or flower in the middle, and then I would eat around it.
My favourites are Granny Smith, Eve, and Royal Gala.
It's definitely an apple a day for me.

What about

peeling it? I always peel it, and then either eat it that way or sometimes use a corer, which really gets you all the apple except just a skinny cylinder along the core.
I don't think I'd ever eat the core. Not sure what the appeal is there. Or should I say the a peel..... ? lol Wink.

the same could be said for peeling it - whats the attraction?

all the goodness is there and it gives some crunch. As for the core - more fiber and just generally less wasteful. For me as well sometimes if i am busy, eating the core is out of laziness - cant be bothered to go to the bin to put the core in, lol.

depends

I used to eat them whole, taking bites, and leaving the core. I almost always salt my apples.

Every once in awhile I would cut them into wedges, removing the core in the cutting process. Mostly this would be if I were serving or sharing them. Or if I were dipping them into caramel.

I still eat small chestnut crabapples whole, leaving the core sometimes. They're so small, sometimes it's not worth biting around the tiny core so I just eat it.

But most apples we buy are too large for me to eat a whole one these days. My husband cuts large apples in half for his lunch so I'll grab one of those halves, use a spoon to core it out, salt it and eat it.

I also eat them sauced, baked, in a pie, and as cider! :-)

It really helps a tart apple...

one that makes you pucker. But I like it on pretty much all apples.

I learned it from my dad. We also ate watermelon, cantaloupe, and muskmelon with salt on it. And we had radishes and green onions raw on the table that we dipped in a mound of salt we'd put on our plates. And I salt celery sticks before eating them.

I think I've seen people put salt on grapefruit but I don't. And I knew a guy who used to salt his beer.

well... if you believe salt is evil, then I guess it is

I'm mostly of the mind that there are too many 'this food is evil' reports out, many contradicting themselves, so I don't fuss too much some things. I don't each much processed food so the salt I eat is mostly what I add to the food I'm cooking and eating. Salt is a flavor enhancer.

I sprinkle the salt on. About as much as any other item you'd salt.

The stuff we'd dip in salt used way more salt. I don't eat those anymore mostly because my stomach can't take radishes and raw green onions anymore.

I dont believe salt is evil - its vital to life

But too much is very bad for you, just as too little is. In todays diets we eat too much, that is why Dr's promote reduced salt intake keeping it under 6g per day.

I have hyperhidrosis so i can actually get away with eating more salt than a regular person.

The thought of using up some of the 6g of salt on fruit just sounds unhealthy but then to me i dont need salt on fruit to make it taste good.

If you dont eat much processed food then im sure its fine for you. In general though most probably aren't eating as good a diet as you are so its probably best to not do so.

On the topic of foods being evil - pretty much no food is completely bad for you when unprocessed its just when messed with we add things which although give longer shelf life etc actually make it worse for our health.

How about with a goodly slice of old cheddar cheese?

This sort of hits the salted apple theme but adds another dimension. The sharpness and dryness of old cheddar contrasts nicely with slices of sweet apples such as Empire or Delicious.

Apples and baked Brie is also a nice combination.

First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still

Then down the funnel,
a long red tunnel,
Riding on a foamy wave,
Ending down in a swampy cave.

Apples now, well being organic to start with, i just eat all minus the hard core and seeds (that have traces of cyanide* that get released into the body).

If i am using the smoothie machine i use stems and everything but the seeds.

I thought the body can detoxify small doses of cyanide?

You have to be a serious apple pip eater to get enough to cause harm i would have thought.

Also the outer shell of an apple seed stops it from being digested it just passes through - though obviously in a blender this wouldnt work, lol.

Cherry, apricot and peach's pips/seeds are much larger so can be harmful if a relatively small number are chewed then swallowed.

OK this got me interested in just how many pips would be needed

i found that you need as little as 200mg of HCN (cyanide) to give a lethal dose. However it is worked out at approx 1.5mg per kg of bodyweight, so if your weight multiplied by 1.5 comes to more than 200mg then you need more.

1g of dried apple pips gives 0.6-0.7mg of HCN. This means you would need at least 333.3g of dried apple pips (going off 0.6mg).

I dont know how much the few seeds in an apple weight but i doubt its much at all.

then you have to actually extract the HCN from the seed - it passes undigested through the body as it was designed to do so that would require either vigorous chewing of each seed one after the other or some other method - maybe a lab can extract it?

Essentially you would have to be trying real hard to die to do so from apple seeds, and thats the end of my morbid post, lol.

At first I thought that your eating the whole apple was a Polish thing - the only time I've ever seen anyone eat an apple, core and all, was in Poland - but apparently you are not the only one here who does that. Laugh

I usually slice my apples, or else eat smaller varieties. Somehow, just biting into a large apple makes me feel like I'm going to dislocate my jaw. Shocked

BTW, the best apples I've eaten were in Poland. My landlord there had a never-ending supply of excellent apples, but I didn't eat that many because I felt like they would think I was being wasteful by not eating the entire thing. I only ate them if I could get rid of the tell-tale core. Crazy Laugh

One of my sons likes apple slices in his lunchbox, so I have acquired a gadget that one places over the apple and pushes down through the apple to remove the core and slice what remains into 8 pieces. Anything to shave a few minutes off the time it takes to get them out the door in the morning...

So anyway, when I do eat apples I use this thing myself.

I believe i know that item.

The wife has one. It has a good suction cup which holds it to the kitchen counter. As a wood worker, it acts like lathe peeling the skin off, and making the main part of the apple into a 'slinky' type that can easily transformed into the makings of an apple pie which she likes to do especially for various holidays. Itt also has a coring element in the process. An all-in-one thingee ha. She can 'knock them out' compared to the old method of peeling and cutting by hand.
...Mouth is watering. Time to make a request i do believe:).

Preliminary results are in ;-)

I left the skin on my apple today ... washed it thoroughly ... examined it carefully, took notes (this is for science, remember, must be thorough :-)). And then ... *crunch*.... contemplate ...*munch*.... contemplate ...

And overall it was pretty much was how I remembered it. To me, the skin didn't add anything flavor wise, and actually rather interfered with the sweetness & juice of the inside. The skin was crunchy, which we noted that carefully on our lab sheet ;-), but the apple inside was crunchy too, so to me it didn't really add anything there either.

However...

Today's test subject was a Red Delicious. Which might not have been the best choice. I have a beautiful Gala on hand also, so tomorrow I will try again with a Gala as the test subject!

P.S. There is also the very real possibility that the apples where you live are simply of a different (better?) quality which makes the skins much better tasting than the ones I have access to Unsure.

I also tried Magpie's salt suggestion as separate experiment. Going to post those results in that thread ...!

I have no idea how the quality of our apples would compare. That's an interesting discussion in itself, as is the different varieties - most of the types mentioned so far in this thread I have never heard of.

Come to think of it, it is surely time we asked the admins to create a separate 'apple' board. I think there is both the demand, and the need. Cool

How did you discover it?

Or has it always been in your family?

Perhaps this is a good time to mention that I use to eat peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. Yummy.

Two options

1.) The "civilised" (aka wasteful) way: Use a knife, peel the apple and slice if off the core. Eat everything else.
2.) The horsewoman's approach: Bite off the peel and feed it to furry friend. Consume the rest yourself and then feed core to horse.

I just can't be bothered with either peel or core.

feeding bites of apples to animals

wow, your post just made me remember my guinea pig. We never properly named it. First it was pig. Then it was piglet. Then it was pigwit. Then it was wigwit.

This was 1975 so not inspired by Figwit at all!

Anyhow, we used to give Wigwit the left overs from the produce we ate. I'd eat the celery and give Wigwit the leafy end. My husband would eat carrots and give Wigwit the stem end. We ate apples and give Wigwit the core.

Well, Wigwit grew to understand that the sound of someone biting into something crunchy meant food was coming and she'd start doing her little 'wheek wheek' sound. It would start out soft then get more and more urgent as we continued to eat... since we hadn't quite gotten *our* part eaten yet. Over time, the really loud, insistent versions came as soon as she heard us crunch and we'd have to give her a bite from the get go to keep her happy.

And over more time, she realized that the sound of the refrigerator opening preceded the sound of us biting into crunchy food so she started 'wheek wheeking' any time we opened the fridge.

She also responded to us calling her name 'Wigwit'.

She was a long haired guinea pig like this one:

The best apples I've had were from Poland too Wink. My mum says however that the most glorious apple she'd ever had was from the Polish village which most of our family descend from,..... sadly that apple tree was cut down in the 90s Unsure

I had to try this

So as the second part of my apple experiment lunch today (the first part was eating the skin instead of peeling it), I salted it.

It was very odd because I love salt and I love apples, but had never mingled the two tastes together at one time. Rather than make it less tart though, I thought it brought the tartness out more. But I thought the saltiness overpowered the sweetness overall.

It was an interesting taste combination though. I salt a lot of things, definitely most vegetables and eggs always. And soups. Salt is a fantastic flavor enhancer for most foods.

The sounds animals remember...

... are quite a story of their own. We once had horses who'd recognise my car's engine. The current ponies haven't managed the engine sound quite yet, but even if I positively creep up to the barn I can't open the tack room door without a greeting. Or rather a "About time you came. I want to play on the paddock. Now!"-demand.

With some apples, the flavor is IN the skin...

I happen to like "russets" of various kinds--old apples typically bred in this area, with blotchy brown skin. The russeting (brown part) is supposedly in response to yeast that gets on the skin. Anyway, in russets, all the flavor is in the skin!

But unless one is eating such apples, I don't think the skin adds much. It's fine for what it is, and I'm too lazy to take it off. But it's not for love of most skins that I eat them!

so that they aren't so much apples anymore,

but maybe ...

apple sauce
apple pie
baked apples
apple porridge
apple cobbler
apple muffins

etcetra: something tasty perhaps reminiscent, inspired by, and containing the essence of apples ... but not really apples ...

an abstraction of apples if you will
apples in an artistically represented form
more formal and easier to take
not quit so tart but still sweet ... and not a mention of cores and seeds and stems ... if they ever existed at all

Ever try with balsamic ?

I find they go great together! Yes, straight balsamic. The juicy sweetness of the apple offsets the sharp acidity and brings out the balsamic flavor. I'm not kidding. Slice the apples, dip them in the vinegar.... wow, it gives me a new appreciation for balsamic.

Oh!

I love apples (especially Granny Smith ones). Always have. Always will. When I was a kid, I always ate the apple like everyone else, just ate it whole. Then for some reason I began cutting the apple in 4 pieces leaving the core of course. Ever since, I always cut the apples, I never just eat them without a knife involved. Strange habit, I know!

It varies greatly from apple to apple. Some apple-skins taste very little, while others have a strong presence.

EDIT: I see now that it was Red Delicious, missed that part. You should try Granny Smith!

Interesting, I am of the complete opposite opinion - I love sour, hard apples, the harder the better. And apples that are soft-ish and overly sweet I don't even bother with, I don't like them because their taste is nothing to me. Cool

Perhaps it is the pesticides that are causing the reaction. I have never heard of anyone allergic to apples before. I have heard of many more people having reactions to pesticides on produce in general.

But I don't think it's the pesticides. I've been tested and I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to a particular protein which is in birch pollen, apples, potatoes and quite a few other fruits too. Thanks for trying to help though Smile

With most of the fruits it's not a big deal, just a bit of an itchy throat, and it's fine once it's been cooked. Just don't ask me to peel potatoes!

I will give those a try

The first one was a Red Delicious and the skin was, alas, not delicious :-). It was thick with a not very pleasant texture and not much taste either. However I've moved on to Gala apples now. I like them much better. In fact even the skin was much better - tastier, thinner but still had a nice crunch. I'll give a Granny Smith a try next. It's really wonderful - at my local supermarket, there is always a beautiful display and selection of all different types of apples, colors, sizes, etc. They look so appetizing. Apples are my favorite fruit and I have to say, this thread has really gotten me feeling adventurous! I'm going to try more of all the different varieties.

And which is your favorite, is it the Granny Smiths :-)?

Granny Smith apples are great for applie pie...

For eating raw, not so much. Wink

Of the commonly found supermarket applies, I prefer Gala. In general, I tend to like sweet apples that, for some reason, tend to be colored with a mix of red and gold. Many local applies are quite good, but they generally are similar to Gala, if a bit tastier.

I don't have a strong preference for crisp vs.soft.

They're far too sour for my tastes. In a pie, when you add sugar and such, they work great. But I don't like the taste of them raw at all. Not nearly sweet enough.

Apple Eating

Here's my apple eating experience:

  1. Core and slice apple with my handy kitchen appliance.
  2. Sit down to enjoy apple.
  3. Watch as my 3 year old sits down beside me and eats my apple.
  4. Wash, rinse, repeat.

As three great Jewels they were in form. But not until the End, when Fëanor shall return who perished ere the Sun was made, and sits now in the Halls of Awaiting and comes no more among his kin; not until the Sun passes and the Moon falls, shall it be known of what substance they were made. Like the crystal of diamonds it appeared, and yet was more strong than adamant, so that no violence could mar it or break it within the Kingdom of Arda.
