What's your favorite moment from AUJ?

Better yet, share a couple: what's your favorite funny part, and what's your favorite anything-else part? And why? Share a couple if you can't choose.

My two favorite funny parts: Bofur's line about "crochet" being a good game -- "if you've got the balls for it" (wouldn't he be fun to hang out with at a party?), and the laundry hung up to dry behind the dwarves' bonfire in Rivendell. The laundry makes me giggle because it shows the Dwarves' complete irreverence for their surroundings.

My favorite other moment: there's a lot of Thorin-moments to choose from. My favorite right now is his smile at Kili when he enters Bag End; it's such a warm smile for someone he clearly cares about. Favorite non-Thorin moment: when we first see inside Erebor and we see the long stone walkway leading to Thror's seat, with Thrain and Thorin at his side: we get an amazing sense of the grandeur and majesty of the Dwarf-kingdom. Breathtaking; I had never imagined Erebor to be grand on that scale, and it was spectacular.

So, c'mon: what are your favorite moments in the movie?

I know a lot of people hate this one, but...

I'm a sucker for the Thorin-walking-down-to-fight-Azog moment. Sorry, just am.

I also love Balin telling Bilbo that Sting is more like a letter opener. His timing and Freeman's reaction are priceless.

I must have missed...

Thorin's look at Kili! I'll have to check that out next time. Thorin and Kili are in a funny bit I like. When Kili says, in the Troll scene that he doesn't have parasites, then Thorin boots him and he gets it and says he has parasites.

For funny, Bofur's "if you have the balls for it" definitely made me laugh, too. I also liked "furnace with wings" from him. "Crack the Plates" was great. Ooooh, Balin and Dwalin butting heads!

Other moments. For a non-Thorin moment, Bofur's "all the luck in the world" talk with Bilbo was very nice. I know it is a controversial scene for some people but I loved Gandalf's body language and facial expression after Galadriel vanishes.

Thorin...The famous Thorin hug, of course, and his entrance into Bag End. Also, that look he gives Thror in the Erebor prologue. I keep saying I believe Kili will end up giving Thorin such a look.

/Gotta go or I'll think of more...

Mine...

Every minute of the Prologue, its up there with the FotR one.
The Pity of Bilbo scene, beautifully acted, initially you actually feel Bilbo is going to strike.
The Nature Reclamation theme when the Moth returns to Gandalf and seeing all the Eagles swooping down taking out the wargs/orcs and picking up the company.

"Take up arms. Fight. FIGHT!!"

Gandalf turning up in Goblin Town. The flash of light, Gandalf as a black silhouette (while the opening from radagasts theme plays), then the rousing Hobbit theme song as they all start fighting.

Favourite comedic moment

Bilbo playing for time with the trolls. Freeman's comedic timing is beautiful and his cheeky "Well..." is perfect. :)

I also love it when Bilbo is asking Gandalf about Radagast: "Is he a powerful wizard, or is he more like you?"

Favourite non-comedy moment: Thorin walking off the burning pine tree with the Moria music behind him. Second: Bilbo facing off with Gollum, demanding to be shown the way out. He has his sword extended, then appears to forget he's holding one and dips it down, then quickly raises it again. Bilbo is flustered and frightened but he's trying to be brave!

Favourite landscape: When the company is in the highlands and is crossing from tussock into snow - there appears to be a fault-line in the middle that is almost the dividing point.

Favourite location: Pre-dragon Erebor. The scale is breathtaking, and you can tell that the designers of Erebor and Moria came from the same cultural stock.

Favourite costume: Thorin's. I love the leather and fur detail.

Favourite CGI: Gollum, resting his chin on a rock, trying to think his way through an early riddle. The natural-looking detail is superb. (I caught a bit of TTT on TV last week, and Gollum looks much, much better in AUJ!)

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I love the song the Dwarves sing while they're flinging Bilbo's dishes around.

Ori trying to look menacing and tough while throwing down his slingshot.

Pretty much any scene with Bofur, especially the touching scene where he bids Bilbo farewell.

A couple of my favorite moments

The gold and jewels and treasure swirling and flowing like a powerful great flood after Smaug has taken Erebor.

Balin embracing Dwalin and weeping after the Battle of Azanulbizar.

" Well well!", said a voice. "Just look! Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious!"
"Most astonishing wonderful!"

Hmmm...

a new location: Erebor---quite grand! That sweeping view was sigh-inspiring;
more Eagles! also sigh-inspiring;
Martin Freeman's so very well played moments as Bilbo choosing to NOT strike Gollum with Sting;
Elrond on a horse! I didn't expect that and the surprise of seeing Elrond Mostly-Grumpy ride up and not grimace was very nice.
Most of the "silly" humor (not the snot!) ---especially Ori's inquiry about chips.

Funny Scene: Bilbo's increasing dismay as he reads the list of things that could happen to him before signing up to join Thorin's party

Scenery: The first view of Erebor..

Tense Scene: The whole Riddles in the Dark scene was perfectly nailed.

Moving Scene: Bilbo's simple explanation near the end about why he'll stand with the Dwarves.

Gosh, I have so many favorites

it's hard to choose. One moment I saw the first time, and I look for every time since, is Bilbo twiddling his thumbs at Bag-End while the dwarves talk about their quest. He is clearly uncomfortable and nervous. This is one of those small moments that a really great actor will just do, without being told. Martin Freeman, to me, just GETS Bilbo. Stalking down the hall when he refuses the quest, creeping around the house the next morning, expecting the dwarves around every corner, stopping the company as if it's perfectly natural to turn around to retrieve his handkerchiefs, all of that is pure Bilbo.

There's a number of Bilbo moments. The resigned look on his face, right at the end, when he thinks that Thorin is about to tear into him AGAIN. He just wants to get through the tirade. Then the complete surprise when Thorin hugs him. At first, Bilbo doesn't know what to do with his hands - should he hug back? But by te end, he's hugging Thorin unreservedly. I just love that.

The dwarves are really great. I can tell that the actors have bonded - it's apparent in their interactions. I love the moment between Dwalin and Balin over the blue cheese. Priceless.

Gollum is so spot-on. His facial expressions while working out the riddles is just perfect.

I love Dale, and Erebor, and Thror's beard jewelry. And that last moment, when Smaug opens his eye, I'm braced for a big TA-DA! of music and/or special effects, but instead we hear almost nothing. The subtlety of that moment makes it even more powerful.

That was the point

Bilbo says crochet, Bofur mishears it as croquet, then Bilbo misinterprets "if you've got the balls for it."

Anyhow, my favorite moments were the "Misty Mountains" and "Blunt the Knives" songs. So perfect. "Riddles in the Dark" was also excellent, especially Andy Serkis' delivery of "String...or NOTHING!"

Of course - I was remembering the misinterpretation, rather than the actual word that was spoken, which lead to the joke.
My memory for details is not great, since I have only seen The Hobbit twice.

In which case, some crochet might be in order...

Giving this a go...

Funny: Really hard to choose as there are so many and they are often quick and subtle. The humor in AUJ definitely beats the humor in the LOTR movies. How about I go with the owl hooting scene? Kili and Fili deliver the idea very earnestly and Bilbo's reaction is priceless. I could name many other small moments though - Gandalf's look when he catches his bag of coins, the entire Good Morning scene, which has had mee just about falling out of my seat each time, and the look between Gandalf and Galadriel when he tells her that the Dwarves have already left.

Emotional: Bilbo wakes up, having firmly made his choice to not go on any adventures and embrace his very solid and very boring middle-class British lifestyle.... and finds his home, his heart, and his life completely empty. Haunting.

Scenery: Everyone seems to be saying this, but I gotta agree: first look at Classical Erebor, beginning with the camera panning down to the front gate and then when we see inside. Nice tease before we get to see much of the action of the next two movies taking place here.

Action: Radagast at Dol Guldur, oddly enough. I felt very emotionally connected to and scared for Radagast. Almost all of the battle scenes the dwarves were involved in felt underwhelming. Not sure why. The escape from Goblintown was probably the worst for me. I haven't been engaged by it either time and I'm mostly just waiting for it to end.

Chilling: Riddles in the Dark. The whole thing. This movie will never get awards consideration and this isn't the type of movie or performance that gets attention, but Martin Freeman is just amazingly good as Bilbo. Andy Serkis is just as good as he was in LotR, which is saying quite a lot because Gollum doesn't have nearly the arc he does in that movie. And yet there are so many subtleties in this scene. Two great actors completely inhabiting two fascinating characters. This is the kind of thing that elevates the medium.

all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us...

About Bilbo...

the utter vulnerability he reveals when he says, "Do you promise I will come back?" is heart-breaking. I love that Freeman was near tears during that scene: Bilbo is genuinely frightened, and his brave facade is failing.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

this is a pretty cool little moment I noticed. When Gollum discovers that he lost the Ring he's freaking out about it Bilbo asks him "what have you lost?" and Gollum replies "musn't ask us not it's business" it's the same exact thing he says to Frodo in TTT when Frodo asks "who are you?" A few favorites

This is fun :-).

Comedic scene: There are so many, but Kili's "It's perfectly safe - we'll be right behind you!" totally cracks me up.

Otherwordly scene: The way the camera (and the music) makes you to feel like you're flying with one of the eagles after the rescue.

The "I never thought they could make this work on-screen" scene: The dwarves singing while cleaning up the dishes. They did, and it was great!

Biggest creep-out scene: The creepy way Azog strokes that Orc's head - right before he throws him to the wargs. (*runs away screaming* eeek)

Best "RA is so subtle" moment: His fleeting look of surprise and the almost-but-not-quite-smile and nod, when Elrond hands him back the sword and says "May it serve you well."

Best "Moment when you first realize the dwarves really are going to be as interesting as you hoped": When Dwalin arrives, the look he gives Bilbo and the way he says "No", when Bilbo asks him if they know each other.

And the scene for which I have no label :-) -- Bilbo's reaction when he sees Rivendell for the first time. Wonderful.

"I'll stick it up his Jackson."

Others have corrected me, pointing out that Ori said "jacksie," but for me it came out "Jackson," and that is how I shall remember it.

Other things I liked:

The moment where, alone in his parlour the morning after, Bilbo has a change of heart. It was palpable, even before the ridiculous running through Hobbiton sequence.

I loved Elrond's warm welcome of Thorin, his reserved but friendly smile, and his wine coloured Elven armour.

Galadriel disappearing on Gandalf. Actually that moment was so well acted by Sir Ian McKellen that it has me questioning whether Galadriel had been in Rivendell at all.

The way they handled Bilbo having the drop on Gollum was quite good, right down to the tear in Smeagol's eye. Though Bilbo did not have to line up as if the strike the second time... once would have been just as powerful.

The first glimpse of Rivendell made me catch my breath. Too bad we couldn't have spent more time there.

... hmmm that's about it, at least for the moment. I did like the aesthetic of Erebor, but in total, it was a little over the top I thought.

Oh, and I liked the music that played while the eagles were carrying the party.

Agreed! I’m normally with Starling and don’t like songs breaking out in movies – but this one’s perfect here. (And the singing of “Misty Mountains” is actually my favourite scene by far in the entire movie. They nailed that performance.)

Best "RA is so subtle" moment: His fleeting look of surprise and the almost-but-not-quite-smile and nod, when Elrond hands him back the sword and says "May it serve you well."

My favourite moment along those lines is his look at Balin when they’re talking in Bag End and Balin tells him (from memory): “You don’t have to do this…”. Thorin’s look there is so vulnerable: he has an inkling of what this may cost everyone around him, but it’s his fate to see it done, regardless.

Best "Moment when you first realize the dwarves really are going to be as interesting as you hoped": When Dwalin arrives, the look he gives Bilbo and the way he says "No", when Bilbo asks him if they know each other.

Spot on with that one, too!

what's not to love?

So many funny moments though... so to pick out just a few then... hm...
- The whole troll scene. Especially concerning fun - after they got caught. I mean just take the time to look at every dwarf in their sacks. It's hilarious. At first I thought Thorin just laid there watching, but he actually screams and trashes uselessly. It's hilarious. Of course there's the parasite yelling too and the genius looks on Bilbo's face (just fantastic casting).

- The generally funny dwarf parts in Bag End. I particularly love the arriving scenes. Such a charming bunch lol.

Other fave moments:

- Not only do I love the troll scene, but I love the lead up to it. I love the Fili, Kili and Bilbo trio. I do hope we get more of these three together.

- Protective Kili. Especially since I didn't know it would be a part of his character. It was a nice touch to see him become so quickly fond of the hobbit.

- The company leaving Rivendell with what is typical "LotR scenery moment with epic music" which works because it's Middle Earth after all. Not a rip off :P

- THE EAGLES. That was magical. The frying pan and into the fire part too.. Was my favorite parts of the book after all and to finally see on the big screen. It was magical. Got that "Ah finally" feel when seeing it. I wish we got more clips of the company on the eagles though.

- The Warg attack was cool. Mhm. Mucho so. And Raddy!

- "Azog learned that day that the line of Durin would not so easily fall" (or something along those lines) and then showing Fili and Kili.............

- Bilbo and Bofur moment in the mountain. Also the Stone giants scene. I actually loved it.

I just loved the whole damn thing okay? XD

Impossible to choose just one. Here are a few:

The whole scene at Bag End when the dwarves arrive is incredible. The songs, the humor, the warmth between many of the dwarves... and of course Bilbo.

Scenes between Thorin and Balin and also Thorin and Kili and Fili

Bilbo explaining why he came back to help the dwarves take back their home.

Many favourites

The one scene that has stayed in my mind the most is the morning after the party when Bilbo was sneaking around his home, then his delight to find he had the place to himself, then realising what that meant.

A small thing, but I thought the dragon kite was a very clever touch.

I was really impressed with the Gollum scenes - his eyes were amazing.

And any scene that Thorin was in was a good scene! Sly

So many favorite moments!

Here are a few of mine, just off the top of my head:

Favorite funny bits:
- the entire scene with the dwarves pillaging Bilbo's pantry while Bilbo tries to get them to put things back
- Bilbo's reading the contract & fainting
- Bilbo's facial expressions when he's thinking of his answer to the trolls on how to best cook the dwarves
- the moment when Bilbo tells Gollum he wants to play the riddle game, and Gollum says that if he wins, he gets to eat Bilbo whole...the expression on Bilbo's face!
- The exchange between Gandalf and Radagast: "These are Gundabad wargs! They will outrun you!"
"These are Rhosgobel rabbits! I'd like to see them try!"

Favorite serious bits:
- Thorin's entry to Bilbo's house
- the little exchange between Balin and Thorin at Bilbo's, how Thorin says he has no choice
- The singing of the dwarves, Over the Misty Mountains song...incredible!
- The moment when Bilbo decides to spare Gollum's life
- The magnificent flight of the eagles after they rescue everyone from the orcs...in 3D HFR I swear I could feel the wind in their feathers!
- I really enjoyed the whole flight out of the Goblin King's domain
- Thorin's seeming to admonish Bilbo about saving his life, then admitting how mistaken he was
- Smaug opening his eye (what can I say? I can't wait to see and hear Smaug! Played by my favorite actor, Benedict Cumberbatch!! )

There's too many to choose

But some of my favorite moments are:

The way Martin Freeman/Bilbo says "Gandalf" after the dwarves have fallen through the doorway and he sees Gandalf standing behind them.

Other great Bilbo moments are the look he has when he's sitting at the bed while the dwarves sing the far over the Misty Mountains song. And also the thick quiet atmosphere of the morning after scene, followed by the running through the shire shouting: "I'm going of on an adventure!" Love the music and the innocent, child-like charm and excitement that scene evokes. But the best Bilbo scene is the pity scene with Gollum. I shed a tear watching that the first time, it was so beautifully done. You really do feel Bilbo's sorry for Gollum there.

Other than Bilbo moment's, I thought the end with the eagles was magnificent (especially in hfr 3d). And anything with Balin. Balin is great. He's like the grandfather everybody wishes they had, and in that sense, something like a dwarf version of Gandalf.

It would be easier for me to tell you what I don't like about the film.

The one bit that makes me smile everytime is probably one of the most controversial parts ... when Radagast pulls out the stick insect from his mouth. I can't help but smile.

The best scene has to be the Galadriel and Gandalf scene.

favourite dwarf-moment: again so many to choose - dwalin/balin after azanulbizar, chip the plates, bofur and bilbo ...
favourite scenery: erebor!!!!!

Thorin's look at Kili! I'll have to check that out next time. Thorin and Kili are in a funny bit I like. When Kili says, in the Troll scene that he doesn't have parasites, then Thorin boots him and he gets it and says he has parasites.

I meant to add that I too love that boot-up-the-backside that Thorin gives Kili! Hilarious! Kili's instant reversal cracks me up, as does Thorin's eye roll thereafter.

Favourite non-comedy moment: Thorin walking off the burning pine tree with the Moria music behind him. Mmm...I think that's about all I can say to this scene. Best goose-bump-inducing scene ever! Favourite landscape: When the company is in the highlands and is crossing from tussock into snow - there appears to be a fault-line in the middle that is almost the dividing point. Neat. I'll have to look for the fault line next time!

Favourite location: Pre-dragon Erebor. The scale is breathtaking, and you can tell that the designers of Erebor and Moria came from the same cultural stock.

The descriptions in the book never give Erebor such a sense of grandeur -- it really is breathtaking. Favourite costume: Thorin's. I love the leather and fur detail.

"Why the halfing" and Bilbo's Pity

The quiet conversation between Gandalf and Galadriel is clearly my favorite moment. The small things that keep the darkness at bay are the heart of both trilogies. The other favorite moment is of course the wordless moment of Bilbo sparing Gollums life. Possibly the most important scene in all 6 movies? And so very well shot too, quiet, with sublime music.

Forgot one of my very favorite moment...

Yes well done. One of my very favorite moments is the moment Bilbo spares Gollum's life. Brought tears to my eyes and goosebumps down my arms. Amazing scene.
Not to mention anything Gollum really. It was great to see him again. He looked brilliant.

Too many favourites!

-All of Riddles in the dark, espicially Gollum's "Is it SCRUUUMPTIOUS!?!!" and Bilbo's petrified face when Gollum realises he has the ring. Brilliant by Martin.
-Bilbo's pity, astounding by Martin again.
-Radagast at Rhosgobel.
-Dwarves futile defence of Erebor.
-Troll reaction to Gandalf's, " The dawn will take you all" is hilarious (Oin's parasite also deserves a mention).
-Good Morning sequence.
-The tension when Bilbo pulls out a glowing Sting in the Cave.
-The eagles were amazing.
-Gandlaf's (and Narya's) " Take up arms!".
-Anything with Dwalin, love him Smile.
-Very subtle but I like the sequence with old Bilbo. Careful detail has been put into the set to show how the journey has changed him. The place is a mess, leftovers from 2nd breakfast lying all over the kitchen floor and heirlooms stached into pots. Bit of a change from an imaculate house, kitchen floor very clean and the outrage of mothers crockery being thrown around. I just love the contrast shown.

Favourite moments for me...

I have a few, and having just watched the movie again tonight (Australia time) those moments are even more reinforced now...

Saruman (how clever to portray him as an almost Spock-like character - filled with logic!) and as always Christopher delivers his lines with near-perfect emphasis - his remarks about Radagast continue to make me chuckle! Great, great actor and so glad to see him back.

The obvious one now; Gollum and Bilbo. it felt like the scene had been directed by Tolkien himself. Enough said.

And a more obscure one maybe; Dori's charming intererraction with Gandalf, first offering the wizard some "chamomile tea" then a few scenes later a red wine with a "fruity bouquet".... delivered with exquisite timing and humour!

That was a brilliant moment

"My favourite moment along those lines is his look at Balin when they’re talking in Bag End and Balin tells him (from memory): “You don’t have to do this…”. Thorin’s look there is so vulnerable: he has an inkling of what this may cost everyone around him, but it’s his fate to see it done, regardless."

I so agree. There is so much going on in that scene. From both actors. There's a lot of justified raving about the Riddles in the Dark scene being the best in the film. But this moment between these two, although shorter and quieter, IMO, is right up there.

Chamomile tea

I love the way Dori says "chamo-mile" instead of "chamo-meel". Unless it's pronounced differently than it is in the US?

" Well well!", said a voice. "Just look! Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious!"
"Most astonishing wonderful!"

I also liked the interaction between Dori and Gandalf.

Dori has such a great Yorkshire accent there and his whole manner makes me smile.

But let me offer a couple of obscure ones too:

When Bilbo is frying his fish at Bag End, he tucks his serviette neatly into his collar and sprinkles some salt precisely on his food. I thought it illustrated so well his prissy and tidy bachelor existence - which is also very lonely.

When Bofur is talking to Bilbo in the cave, Thorin wakes up. The look in his eyes is quite complex: regret that he has driven Bilbo away? Sadness that the hobbit is actually going? Pain that Bilbo is going home, a thing he cannot do himself as yet? The decision to let him go without stopping him?

with Radagast and the stick insect! I also liked how frantic he is when he sees the dead animals and the injured trees, and how desperately he is trying to help poor Sebastian. Crazy

Thorin in the Bilbo/Bofur conversation

I took it to be the third, and not entirely on his own behalf either. He seemed to me particularly affected when Bofur agreed with Bilbo "You're right. We don't belong anywhere".

Though it is hard to be sure. Again my take, but after they all escape the caves, Thorin is very negative about Bilbo, claiming he has left for good and making disparaging remarks about his longing for his soft bed, etc. This I took to indicate he did not regret Bilbo's leaving, either at that point or earlier. And to me, this understanding was supported by Thorin's reaction to Bilbo's speech when challenged by him to explain his return. He looked down and away from Bilbo during that speech, which to me suggested shame/an awareness that he had been in the wrong (which, being an arrogant so-and-so he was not going to admit without further provocation...) I felt this was really the first time Thorin had seriously considered his initial judgment of his grocer-like burglar may have been wrong.

It's not a single moment, but the series of moments between Thorin and Bilbo starting with the Stone Giants, through to the hug at the end, was probably my favorite "thread" of the film's story.

Yes, the "correct" English pronounciation is 'Camo-mile!...'

Just like we say "Few-tile" and you say "Few-till" or something like that...

The i and the e are separated by only one consonant, so our rule is that the i is pronounced "eye" Smile

What's your favorite moment from AUJ?

Favourite funny moment: "Apology accepted" /heartfelt smile

Favourite anything else moment: 1) Thorin's backstory narrated by Balin... it really makes you want to go and follow that guy wherever he goes. 2) A cut on Bilbo on his bed listening to the dwarves singing... there's an ocean of meaning in that scene

Favourite scenery: Erebor. Finally we get to see glimpses of dwarven greatness

Favourite wig: I love Thorin's hair. The ashy coal black with streaks of silvery grey, the receding hairline...

Favourite Thorin moment: "Welcome, Thorin, son of Thráin." "I do not believe we have met." We need to see more of dry, sarcastic Thorin

Favourite Bilbo moment: all of them, without exaggeration, everytime the camera closes on Bilbo, it's a win

Favourite little detail & pleasant surprise: Ori

Yes, the Bilbo/Thorin thread

is a good one to follow. And I'm sure their relationship will continue to have its ups and downs in the next film.

But I still think that scene in the cave is more complex that you give it credit for. We get two shots of Thorin. In the first he opens his eyes (although you get the feeling that he hasn't been asleep) just as Bilbo says that he shouldn't have come and that Thorin was right. Perhaps Thorin didn't intend to stop him because he still thinks he's right - after all the lives of his men are at stake - but there is a thoughtful sadness in his eyes which makes me think he wishes the situation were otherwise.

Then Bilbo makes those quite cruel and insensitive remarks when he says he's going home and that he can't live a homeless existence like the dwarves. Bombur looks hurt and Bilbo realises that he is out of order. Cut to Thorin and you can see the pain in his eyes as he thinks about the near impossibility of winning back Erebor for his people.

Yes you absolutely must!

As do I... I watched it for a second time last night (Aussie time) and have to say I missed so much the first time I did wonder if I had my eyes closed on first viewing!!

The scene in the cave (goblin 'front porch' - what a great line from the goblin to the King that was!) was sheer brilliance - I am so happy Richard Armitage is playing the role 'real' - much like Viggo played Aragorn.

Another couple of scenes have come back to me after a nights sleep - scenes of the Dwarves mining in Erebor were quite marvellous to behold - the moment a Dwarven smithy held up a molten ingot to be beaten between two enormous hammers - incredible! And the thrush heading back to the Lonely Mountain... I inexplicably forgot how clever that scene was... the thrush cracking a nut against the wall (no doubt near the Secret Door) - and the tap, tap, tapping waking Smaug from his slumber.... now THAT scene was simply breathtaking.

Bring on the Desolation!!!

Hard call. Possibly Gandalf's explosive entrance into Goblintown, but that is largely because

I had long worried that Peter, who can be disparaging of magical displays and stingy with Gandalf's, would either bungle, underplay or avoid showing it altogether. It was one of those situations where I felt the legacy of Gandalf's direct power as a Wizard in these movies would be defined in large part by this moment, so when it turned into a truly impressive and potent display, I breathed a sigh of relief. And I think it is a great moment in the movie.

I Also loved the ENTIRE Erebor sequence, and The Unexpected Party. Best moment in the film for atmosphere has to be the dwarves singining their anthem. It is one of the better moments of the entire series thus far. I also enjoyed the Gandalf and Galadriel scene, though I wish there had been less indication of subordinance on Gandalf's part. I also liked the entire sequence from the time Bilbo misses his handkerchief, to Radagasts realization that foul sorcery is at work in the forest.

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

Some little bit details

Just saw it again tonight. Focused a lot more on Dori and Ori, because...well...I like them. They're two of my faves. And some things I noticed...

When Ori does the "I'm not afraid" speech, Dori immediately looks at Nori. The look he gives is NOT a happy one. Nori, on the other hand, has a rather pleased expression on his face(and at no point does he return Dori's scathing look).

Shoot...I'm trying to remember the scene... They under some kind of overhang, and I think it was Thorin in the foreground. I don't remember what was said, because I was watching Dori who was just within frame. He, once again, doesn't look happy and it looks like he's telling someone off. I thought it was Nori, till the scene pans out, and you see a rather unhappy Ori sitting on a rock, looking very well scolded. Makes me wonder what he did to make Dori upset.

When Dori is hanging from Gandalf's staff, with Ori clinging to his leg, you hear Dori call down, "hang on, lad" with a "it'll be okay" tone to his voice. And then when they're flying away on the Eagle, it almost looks like he's holding Ori down on the Eagle. Though it might be that he's clinging to the feathers and, being that they are two riding on one bird, he's pinned Ori down.

When they're at Rivendell and Dori is trying to gently coax Ori into eating the lettuce, Dori has a glass of wine in front of him. I'll have to look harder next time to see what the other Dwarves have. Just a need little indication that Dori seems to have more refined tastes. Thinking of which, I'll have to see if they show him drinking the mead like the others at Bag End. I have a hard time imaging him chugging it down(and spilling a lot of it) like the other(including him brother Nori).

okay, onto others...

When Gollum realizes that Bilbo has the ring, Bilbo is holding Sting. His hand is slightly shaking. Just a little. I thought it was a nice touch.

When they're riding in the rain, Bofur is still trying to smoke his pipe. He even looks at it disappointingly.

At Bag End, Galdalf using his finger to light his pipe. A moment later, he blows out the flame on his finger.

Dwalin head-butting his way through the enemy at Moria.

I can't wait for the EE, so I can (hopefully) see more Dwarf scenes!! ^_^

another one to look for

Another thing I forgot to mention. It's been discussed whether Balin and Gandalf knew about Azog still being alive. Here might be some more proof that they did. When Thorin sees Azog again, Balin is near him in the tree. He gives Thorin a look, that Thorin doesn't see. It almost looks like guilt. Missed chance to break the news to Thorin before the nasty shock came?

Something to look for and think about.

I can't name just one, but I'll try to be brief

-Bilbo's change from relief to regret when he wakes up after the Unexpected Party
-His chase through Hobbiton and screaming "I am going on an adventure!". Thinking back to the day I started my first long distant walk (all by myself though), I know exactly what he felt like at that moment. I wanted to cuddle him.
-Thorin's warface in Azanulbizar
-all of Gollum's facial expressions, but especially the moment he realizes his precious is gone for good
-burning tree charge complete with anticlimatic instant defeat
-Galadriel. Just... wow

The definite funniest would be the whole parasite exchange and especially the look and kick Thorin gives Kili

I love how Bilbo is so flustered in the beginning

when the dwarves start invading his home! I especially love when Dwalin and Balin are both talking to each other in his pantry and Bilbo is talking at the same time, and the look as he follows his blue cheese as they toss it out of the pantry! I think the beginning of this movie is the most wonderful for me...all the way up to Bilbo's leaving Bag End. Absolutely brilliant. Makes me smile just thinking about everything that was going on there, even with the serious moments (I love Thorin singing the song, then the others joining in. And Bilbo sitting in his bedroom looking so thoughtful.)

Favorite funny part!

I loved the Warg chase scene with Radagast! The classic "dog chases rabbit" scenario! The music fits right in too. And as far as the CGI stuff, I thought Radagast and the bunny sled was better than the Wargs.

" Well well!", said a voice. "Just look! Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious!"
