Gollum's Design in FoTR

Has the Gollum design used in FoTR ever been released? I know they changed his design between FoTR and TTT, but I've never seen what his full FoTR looked like.

I still don't see the difference

Even with screencaps side by side, how can anyone notice they are different?

Will post here if I do Smile

are you going by screencaps?

...or are you watching the movie?

The moments with Gollum in FOTR are quick and I don't think many of the screencaps I could find highlight the differences.

I've always noticed the differences while watching the movie.

Re: the prologue Gollum - the shape of the head looks different to me. But I don't have an easy screencap using the same angles of the more developed CGI versions to compare to.

Re: Moria Gollum - the nose is quite snub and the brow seems flatter.

Did you enhance the bottom two pictures Magpie?

It's not as light in my copy - Gollum's features are more obvious in these pictures than I've previously seen.

most screencaps are too dark for me

and to see detail I often lighten them. I think, maybe, they look lighter on the tv or in the theater, but either the screencapping procedure darkens them or my monitor runs too dark (and it may be my monitor - or maybe my eyes!).

So, yes, all four images are lightened using levels in Photoshop.

Even non-CG characters can look different from shot to shot

I don't think the differences are so strong, and certainly not while actually watching the movie at normal speed. I believe I recall Peter Jackson saying something on the commentaries about wanting to go back and swap out the original Gollum for the design they eventually used, but they're similar enough, and the scenes are quick and dark enough that I don't think it's necessary.

I like the current gollum better.

He look more, hobbit like, even though is still creep and inhuman.

But without scouring the web for images

The difference isn't particularly striking to me. Blush

Still looks the same, mostly

Just his mouth looks more goblinesque.

I've never looked at any still images

but I have always noticed it.
Maybe that says something about how many times I have watched the films. I need to get out more. Laugh

I don't think the design changed as much as it got more detailed...

My understanding was always that Jackson only showed Gollum in a shadowy sort of way in FOTR because they were still working on how to make him look more lifelike, so he'd hold up better when shown with the other actors...the basic look for him did not change, it just got more realistic, the way I remember it.

Of course I have trouble remembering where I put my car keys, so I could be totally off base on this! Off hand the best place to check would probably be in one of hte commentaries on the creation of Gollum, I'd guess...

I always thought his eyes looked different

but from looking at the models for FOTR it doesnt really look like they are at all, more Gollum's jaw which is different.

I think he was originally more like Alan Lee's Gollum

That look can be seen here - http://fantasy.mrugala.net/Alan%20Lee/Alan%20Lee%20-%20L'apprivoisement%20de%20Gollum.jpg

What changed was them making him look more like Andy Serkis and more of a character rather than just a 'creature'.

I am hoping Peter replaces it with a shadowy version of his AUJ look in a future edition of FOTR.

It changed.

They talk about it in the Two Towers extended edition appendices. They took the original design and changed it to look more like Andy Serkis.
