how about boromir and sean bean in fotr?
just splendid imo. sean bean really looks
for that truth in his role. you can feel
boromirs strife. i like this clip on youtube.

I don't think you'll find many who'd argue with you on this point; brilliant!
Both performers are great here, but Sean Bean really shines. The lines that begin with, "Have you ever seen it, Aragorn, the White Tower of Ecthelion...?" are very formal and a bit old fashioned sounding; few actors could have made them sound so natural while revealing their great beauty. Wonderful performance.

Sean Bean's Boromir was one of the great discoveries of FOTR for me. Even though Tolkien said he was a noble man, I could never shake my suspicion and dislike of him in the book, and tended not to be sorry at his death. But the movies gave me a character I could like, that actually seemed in an odd way to succeed in showing me Tolkien's intended character better than Tolkien did. One of the only ways in which I would say the movies improved on the book, because in fleshing out the character they (and Sean Bean's terrific performance) got him just right.

I think my favorite "invented" scene is Boromir teaching Merry and Pippin to fight. I just love that. Smile

I totally agree. Especially after watching (yes, I will admit it) Bakshi's version, I absolutely despised Boromir. He had not redeeming qualities in that film, and when I reread the book, it was hard to imagine him otherwise. (Granted, I was a "bit" younger at the time...) Then I watched Sean Bean's/Peter Jackson's version and it was an eye-opener and no doubt.

Not the Boromir I myself imagined, but I loved Sean Bean's portrayal
He brings out the character's flaws and feelings about the Ring brilliantly while making you warm to him as a character (and cry when you watch the death scene for the first time).

His extra scene in TTT made me like the character even more when it became clear that Boromir openly disapproved of Denethor's treatment of Faramir. The whole scene casts the character in a completely different light and shows just how much love and respect his comrades had for him.

I actually liked the book one
But but the movie version really took it over the top. He brought so much humanity to the role.
