will i probably love The Hobbit if i love PJ's King Kong?

unexpectedvisitor Rohan Dec 13 2012, 9:52pm Views: 559 will i probably love The Hobbit if i love PJ's King Kong? i know some people on here don't care for King Kong that much. i, however, love it. don't get me wrong, i don't like it as much as LotR or Heavenly Creatures or Dead Alive (and the extended version of King Kong doesn't work AT ALL, unlike with LotR) but in general i think it is a superlative example of big-budget action-adventure filmmaking--and while i typically go more for old foreign films, edgy dramas and the like--i just love the way PJ approaches genre flicks and it takes me back to early Spielberg like Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark, which are also some of my favorite movies of all time. from everything i've read and seen of The Hobbit, it seems like a film that's definitely got its feet planted in the Middle Earth we love from LotR, but to match some of the character of the source material PJ has brought in some of the influence of King Kong: lots of eye-candy, CGI, elaborately orchestrated action pieces, some general silliness and whatnot, but basically an emphasis on fun on a huge scale with a bit of ingenuity and heart in the mix (and if you don't think PJ's King Kong has heart i highly recommend you check out Walter Chaw's review on Film Freak Central, he really delves into the simple beauty of the film's themes). so what say you, people who have seen both movies? i have to wait until tomorrow night to see it, can't wait!

I may be equal parts a fan of Tolkien and a fan of PJ's method of film making. I love the amount of detail and attention he puts into his films. Nothing feels generic. Even if something doesn't quite work, it's usually forgivable because something great was attempted. I think most of the "meh" reviews are from reviewers that are neutral to Jackson. I'm fully expecting to be transported tomorrow when I see The Hobbit.

belfalas Bree Dec 13 2012, 10:58pm Views: 231 I haven't seen King Kong... yet It's been seven-and-a-half hours since I staggered out of an Odeon isense HFR 3D presentation of The Hobbit, and still haven't got my wits about me properly yet; I think it's sensory overload! There is no way I can form a coherent opinion of the film after one viewing, except to say that the whole experience has left me quite stunned. It is most certainly a film I'm going to see again in HFR 3D, after I've had a few days to absorb what's just happened. I'm pretty familiar with the story of The Hobbit (read it first when I was 10 and several times since) and yet I found there was so much detail and story in there that felt new, and at times felt like it was the first time I'd heard the story. Quite strange and wonderful. As regards the HFR 3D (to quote someone else from these forums) "it made the whole viewing richer and deeper". I didn't feel that any of the 3D was 'gimmicky' in the least; it really added to the experience. I haven't seen PJ's King Kong yet. Sod it, I'm just going to buy the blu-ray! I think you're going to enjoy this.

morgul lord Rivendell Dec 14 2012, 12:12am Views: 206 King Kong is AWESOME Seriously, I can't believe people are so harsh towards PJ's King Kong. It's 84% fresh on Rottentomatoes, which is better than The Hobbit, but people these days seem to write-off King Kong as a failure. And you know what? I LOVE the first hour. The whole boat trip to Skull Island builds SO much tension and creepy atmosphere. The only part that drags, for me, is the final act back in NY. I do think it goes on too long. But otherwise, King Kong is a fantastic action-adventure movie, with some of the best effects and action sequences I've EVER seen in a movie (including LOTR). So yeah, I'm pretty sure I'll probably love The Hobbit when I see it tomorrow. :)

ghost_matt Rivendell Dec 14 2012, 3:55pm Views: 125 love PJ's Kong too I too love PJ's King Kong. I saw it twice in the theater, have the Production Diaries, and the theatrical and extended dvds. I think maybe 10 minutes could have been shaved off (the Jimmy arc and some of the dino scenes were over the top), but the good outweighs the bad. It's an awesome movie and I never understood the hate. I'm going to see The Hobbit this afternoon and I'm sure I'll like it.
