It's the Friday before The Hobbit opens - welcome to Fiesta Friday!!

Welcome, everyone!

Well, the day is finally nigh. This week, on the 12th, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will start opening worldwide. By this time next week, many of us will be bleary-eyed, or asleep, having gone to midnight showings and Line Parties. Others will be getting their tickets for the weekend out every five minutes and saying: "my precioiusssssssss...." LaughLaugh

So, will you be seeing it before next weekend? If yes, tell us when and where. BG and I have to work, so we won't make it to a midnight show, but we'll be at the theater bright and early Saturday a.m. for an IMAX 3-D 48fps experience.

Is this too cool or what!!!! Yippeee!

*kicks juke box* the Hallelujah Chorus by Johann Strauss Orchestra and the Harlem Gospel Choir fills the room.

Have wonderful week, everyone!! CoolSmileHeart

Yay! Finally!

It comes to us on our birthday. Not a bad way to spend it either! One week to go!

Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament... There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth, and more than that: Death: by the divine paradox, that which ends life, and demands the surrender of all, and yet by the taste (or foretaste) of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained, or take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man's heart desires.

Woo Hoo! Have fun all you midnight screeners!

Those of us who are NARF are waiting for a more civilized hour. We'll probably take the Little Eruvandes and some cousins over the Christmas break. For now, I'm reading The Hobbit aloud to them at night to get ready. And I got the Rolling Stone special edition with all the lovely photos to drool over. Laugh

How about a mojito, Altaira?

Yes I've still got a rose blooming. Smile

I graduated yay!

Found out on Wednesday afternoon but didn't want to make a special thread for it, lol. Took so long but glad i have finally done it, was so relieved! I am now a surgeon Cool

As for The Hobbit i will be seeing it at my local Cineworld which is showing it in IMAX HFR 3D. I am excited for the imax and 3d as i know i like that, the hfr i have heard some differing views but thought why not, might even push the boat out and get d-box seating as a present to myself for graduating!

It has come at last, the second great movie of our time!

I realized the other day that I've now known a woman I met at the first showing of The Two Towers for ten years! Has it been that long?

We won't be doing any midnight showings of The Hobbit, thank you, but will try to make a showing next Friday. We're aiming to start with the 2D 24 fps, firstly so the unaccustomed format won't distract from the story and characters, secondly because I'm prone to migraines and would like to get a few reports about how migraine-erific either the 3D or the 48 fps is before I go there.

I know I won't be grabbed by this trilogy the way I was grabbed by the LotR trilogy, since LotR's always been my favorite of the books. But I'll enjoy the heck out of it.

Meanwhile, I have novel-revisions to do, and Christmas cards to address. This year I had cards made up with the photo of the Gaffer and me in Hobbiton, in front of Bag End, that I've posted on TORn more than once. It's been a whole year since we were there, sigh.

I'll grab a gingerbread latte, please, and get back to work, if not without sneaking frequent peeks at The Hobbit board. (And by the way, please excuse Miss Professional Speller here, but it is PEEK! A "peak" is what the Lonely Mountain is. Tongue )

*stuffs tip jar with glitter from our front-door wreath, which looked a lot smaller in the store...*

Mojito, coming up, Alassea

Midnight shows would indeed be impossible with little ones. I could probably take Friday off, but BG can't, so I'll wait to see it with by sweetheart, and you'll wait to see it with your sweethearts too. Heart Laugh

Enjoy the weekend and the last few days/weeks of anticipation.

LOL! What appropriate music!

I can just imagine what next Friday's Fiesta will be like...Laugh! Imax? Nice!

Geeky Son and I plan to watch it at our local independent theater in glorious 2D this weekend. I need to ask an older friend, who loves Tolkien but has yet to get a computer, to come with us.

Then later at a 48fps theater, there are two that are both an hour away from us. And when the rest of the kids come home for Christmas, we'll have a massive family viewing! Smile

Oh - might I have a mocha coffee, please, Altaira? It's getting blustery here!

Hey there, Lily!

Part of me wishes we would have gotten 23 24fps tickets first, but we're committed now and, I confess, I'm dying to see what all the fuss is about.

Using that Hobbiton pic for your Xmass cards is such a cute idea! I bet the cards are adorable. Best of luck with getting everything done by next Friday! (I didn't use the work peak, did I? I can spell fine, but sometimes my typing fingers don't pay attention to that).

Happy weekend, dear! Smile

champagne for everyone, barkeep!

I know everyone's excited about The Hobbit opening, but I have another cause for happiness: I successfully defended my dissertation Monday. So yes, I am Dr. Annael now!

This whole experience has been wonderful for me, but I have to say, the defense and the reaction I got from the other students and my professors was way beyond what I expected. I had a sense I was on to something that would really touch people, but was amazed by how strongly it actually did. Also amazed by how strongly I was affected the moment my chair called me "Doctor." Seriously, it was as good as my wedding day.

Already started working on the book that I always meant to write - the dissertation just being the necessary springboard. Even though I've also been partying the last three days straight.

It's going to kill me not to go. Good for you for taking the plunge. It *is* a good feeling that there are still two movies to go, isn't it? It's like stepping out your door on an exciting journey, a bit like Bilbo.

Woohoo! As long as the kids clean their rooms this weekend,

we'll snag some tickets to the 3D version for next Friday or Saturday. I'm hoping the great buildup of anticipation around here provides enough motivation to get those rooms company-ready. I think it'll work; my Hobbit's even been shooshing people whenever the movie previews are on TV!

This year for Christmas, my Hobbit gets to let his cousin sleep on the lower bunk in his room, and Beamer'll be bunking in with me so my sister, BiL and niece can have her room. We gotta get this place two-year-old ready!

Oh, I'll have a nice cup of tea before I go back to crazy-holiday-prep mode. Oh, wait, I have to place the cookie order for my Girl Scout troop today. And the Christmas baskets tonight at our meeting. And Beamer's having a sleepover. And tomorrow's the holiday party/recital at the kids' dance studio. And maybe the Kristkindlsmarkt in Denver, if the weather holds. I almost hope it doesn't, we need the snow that badly...

GAA!!!

FINALLY!!! It's HERE!!! :D

Well... within *twitching* distance! I think I'll snag a chocolate milkshake in celebration :D

I've got my ticket (#001) for the midnight show and will be hosting the line party! OMG! I'll be wearing my Wraith costume... which will be toasty-warm in this mid-December winter Michigan weather. THEN I'll be taking Friday off to recover AND go see it again; then at the IMAX on Saturday; then again on Sunday (already have all those tickets!) Whither then I cannot say ;)

I will also be going the the Lord of the Rings Marathon tomorrow (Saturday the 8th) at my local theatre! That was such a great thing they've done. Get primed and slavering-ready to go!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend... and thank Altaira :) Sorry BG and you must work, but it will make your first viewing all the more tasty after beting torn-tured like that! :)

HUGS!

Awesome, gramma!

it's nice to hear you're following you tradition of seeing it multiple times. I am too (just not quite as many as you, I think).

Have a blast at the midnight show and leading the Line Party. I can't think of a better person to lead one than you, dear lady.

it's true

it's a huge boost in self-confidence for sure. I'm telling all my friends who got through the program but are now wondering if it's worth the extra time & money to do the dissertation "DO IT. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT."

Thanks! I've been amazed as well at how happy people are for me. I kinda thought most people had a negative attitude about PhDs, but such has not been the case in the people who know me!

It was a long time in coming, wasn't it, gramma?

Remember standing in that huge ballroom in Hollywood, seeing all our heroes up on the stage, glittering like jewels with their Oscars held high? Remember chanting "Let The Hobbit Happen!" until we were hoarse? Remember the postcard campaign? It all seems like a lifetime ago, yet, when I watch the trailers for The Hobbit, Middle Earth becomes as immediate and real as the ground I'm standing on. Shortly we'll be watching PJ's Christmas gift to us all (and yes, I've got about that many viewings lined up, too!!), but to me, the real gift is that this return to Middle Earth has re-kindled friendships and brings back the same love, excitement, and pure joy that we share in our little community (and you know what I'm talking about). TORn and the LOTR films introduced me to a community that ultimately brought me some of the very best experiences and now memories of my entire life.

gramma, I'm glad you're with me.

Good advice indeed

I did all the classes (which involved a five-hour round-trip commute, usually twice a week), did my comps and orals, and even had my abstract approved. Then...........

Then I didn't finish it. I suspect that the regret that I feel goes about as deep as the pride you feel for having have perservered.

Again, many congrats!!! Keep on celebrating!!

Hi all!

Hi Altaira and everyone, I had to come and join in this pre-Hobbit Fiesta!

I have my tickets booked for the first showing, there are 8 of us going, then the day after, Neil and I have the day off work to drive somewhere with a 48fps screen. Very excited. Been trying to avoid all reviews and the Hobbit board as I want to be completely neutral when I go see it. Then I can join in all the fun!

Life has been busy as ever, agility competitions with the dogs, (we have started bringing home a few rosettes and trophies now!), work, cakes etc. I am busy this evening baking Christmas Tree giant cupcakes, and some gingerbread.

Happy weekend all!

Thank you very much. And Congratulations to you Dr

how strange that we both become a Dr in the same week - though different kinds obviously.

It was a very surreal feeling knowing that something i had worked on for 6 years has finally come to me passing. As you know i was very nervous about the prospect of being homeless and bankrupt if i had failed.

Character building stuff in the end!

What are your plans for celebration? Mine are to go out tonight (its evening here now) and celebrate my last day as a student and get drunk for first time in over a year!

I don't think so

I'll put the PhD at the end instead. Since my dad's a physician I do associate "Dr." with medicine, and I'm not that kind of doctor.

When a friend said jokingly said "hey doc, I have this pain here . . ." I replied "I can only help you if it's mythic pain."

My committee did press me rather hard with their first questions, but then they lightened up. I was surprised that they asked me some personal questions ("how did you, as a woman writer, feel about writing about women writers?"). I would have been terrified to do it after my second year but after my third year and a year spent on my topic, I was quite confident.

One of my friends

stopped when she was writing the conclusion to her dissertation.

There's something about finishing that is very hard for people. My brother got to the last quarter of a five-year program and dropped out. My wasband also dropped out at the end of his graduate program. All I can think is that it represents a permanent change and change is very, very scary - even if it might be a good change, it's unknown territory. I do admit to some butterflies over no longer being a grad student working towards a PhD. Now I have to make it mean something!

And pay off the student loans Crazy

(I think this picture is small enough?)

That bush outside the front is gone now though. we're redoing the kitchen this month and moving in in january.

As for The Hobbit, I'm not sure yet. Probably over the weekend, but I don't have anyone else to see it with at the moment. Some friends are going to a midnight showing, but I can't make it then, and anyway they're seeing the IMAX 3D HFR version and I can't watch 3D as far as I know. My wife is gone for the weekend but my parents will be in town to watch the baby, so I will be able to go see it sometime, but maybe it will be by myself. Or if any tornsibs are in northern Virginia and want to see a 2D showing on the weekend let me know. Wink

I made it! Too bad I have to serve myself, but I'll take what I can get!!

Helping myself to hot cocoa. The weather is wet and cold here and something hot hits the spot! I'm glad to have this weather now instead of last weekend. Last weekend, we spent a good chunk of the day participating in the town Christmas parade. Everybody in the family marched. One kid in band, one kid in Scouts, I chaparoned the Scout and my husband marched along taking pics for the local paper. I bet we looked great!! The weather cooperated, that's for sure (low 60's all day and no rain). The bands sounded great, both junior and senior high, and the Scouts behaved. What a relief to have that over. This weekend I can finally start(!) my holiday shopping and begin my Christmas candy-making for the family (peanut brittle and marshmallow fudge this weekend). Next weekend, I'll make the chocolate caramels. MMMMMmmmm!! Evil

Congrats to all our ToRN sibs who are seeing the culmination of many years of hard work. Best of luck in the future!!

We cheated ...

Shared ownership is such a massive help. So we didn't buy outright, instead we own a certain percentage of the property.

We had massive problems with our previous landlord. Renting can be great if you get the right price and the right landlord. I imagine renting is quite cheap up north?

Oh i see

That sounds like quite a good idea, i have a couple of friends who have done that as well, just to get their foot on the property ladder, renting just seems like such a waste.

Rent in Sheffield is certainly cheaper than London for example but it is still very expensive, especially the student half of the city (which up until the other day i needed to live in), overseas students and southerners pushed up the prices of rented houses!

Up in Cumbria where i plan on moving back to rent is more reasonable - in fact in some parts in really good - i saw advertised a 3 bed semi house, with garage, gardens for only 500 a month! in London that would cost probably 4 times as much!

was something I did with my kids and g'kiddies... and it was great for all of us. I couldn't help my change my voice for different characters. :D

I'm nervous about the 3d & 48fps, too.

But we'll know very soon :D

Has it already been a year? Wow...

Time to make some new memories ;)

It's going to be fascinating

to see The Hobbit in so many different formats. My first one will be the 24fps, too. I laughed when I saw how many different geeky people you're going to see this with. Then I realzed there's a wonderful common denominator in all of this ;)

I hope you've been having a great weekend!

Your daughter works there?

I've often thought of working part-time at my local theatre... but then I'd probably never have time to see a movie ;)

Hope your weekend has been great :D

The glasses sound great :)

The 3d at my theatre has more expensive tickets and a pair of glasses each time. I wish I could watch 3d multpile times with the same glasses. They do have a recycling bin outside the theatre door.

I hope you have a GREAT first viewing :D

Oh... I love The Christmas Carol

Nearly every version I have ever seen I enjoy. I especially like the Albert Finney and Muppets version.

I hope you have a great time, sherlock!
