Hobbit forum abstainers support group!

With the release of the Hobbit just around the corner next week, the Hobbit forum is being flooded with all sorts of spoilers. I know of at least a few of us who are trying to avoid spoiling the entire film, so we've given up the forum until we've seen it. So this thread is for everyone fleeing from the last round of spoilers.

Talk about whatever you want - when you're planning to see the film, what version you're planning to see, or just you horror stories from quitting spoilers cold turkey!

Here's to all of us making it another week or so! Cheers! Smile

but I've been able to avoid spoiler for the most part. Except tonight, I saw a picture of one of the trolls (and did it scare the h*** out of me Shocked *shudders*) I can hardly wait, just one more week to go, and hopefully I'll see it soon. Stay safe to everyone who is also avoiding spoilers!

Cold turkey

I quit the Hobbit forum six or eight weeks ago, I think. So far, according to the stats I see on my directory page, I've missed 893 new threads, and about 25000 new posts. "Miss" is a technical term, of course, in this context; it wasn't until afterwards that I realized how much the general atmosphere was stressing me out. But that's just me; I know how many people have been enjoying the run-up to this first film of the Hobbit trilogy. Gah...I just realized that "trilogy" has become a creepy-crawly word in my head.

Gee, I never thought about the problem of spoilers!

I haven't avoided

spoilers for the most part. But now that the review embargo lifted, I am getting out of there. It was fine when we were getting bits and pieces of spoilers, but now that people have seen the whole finished film, I do not want to know scene-by-scene or even huge chunks of the film.

Can't wait to see it! Then I'll be able to rejoin the throng Wink

The past couple weeks

I've actually really joined in the discussions. It's been nice actually getting into the thick of it. But like I was saying to Ziggy, I just don't want the finished film being recounted to me scene-by-scene.

Goodness, though, I couldn't have left six weeks ago. I've only been gone like one day and although I've only missed 25 threads and 600 posts, it's killing me not joining in. It feels like some big secret that I've been excluded from, lol Tongue

I'm looking forward to rejoining on the 14th! I'm sure speculation will already be rampant for DOS.

Great idea!

I avoid all but the tiniest of spoilers. I'm even avoiding most trailers this time (which I did not do last time--watched' 'em all, but avoided other sorts of info.)

I'll be seeing it in 2D first, and I would really like to have someone tell me if it looked good in 2D without actually telling me anything about the movie! May be overly wishful thinking . . .

You're very welcome!

I felt we needed a place to help each other over the next week.

I've actually watched most of the previews and trailers, and seen or heard most other spoilers, but like I was saying earlier, now that people have seen the whole finished film, I had to get out. Those are the major spoilers and I do not want to know them.

I'll be seeing it in 2D 24fps the first time as well. I don't want to be distracted by the glitz and glam the first time. I just want to see The Hobbit.

Avoiding details as much as possible. I live for spoilers when they are trickling in at a tantalizingly slow rate. I don't see how a scene by scene description is necessary for a critique of a film. I guess reviewers are taking the word review too literally.

why it's like that

I have no idea.

I think it might have something to do with peak movie watching times- you guys in the USA have a big Thanksgiving weekend for kid/family movies- for us that's January, when it's school holidays, the kids are ratty because it's so hot, and you just want to get them somewhere air conditioned where they will be quiet for 90 minutes.

And December 26 is another 'blockbuster' time, for the same kinds of reasons- family holiday, warm weather. Still, there are OTHER films that get released Dec 14 here, so I think is is partially just to spite us and our pesky unions. :)

Now, I could be really mean ...

And unload all the spoilers into this post, or "claim" that your missing loads. The former is just nasty, and the latter is just untrue! Tongue

I'm still reading The Hobbit forum, but I'm avoiding any new clips (apart from TV spots), and not particularly paying any attention to any of the reviews. *yawn* I don't care for critics reviews in all honesty!

But keep going everyone. With so little time left, there really is no point having anything spoiled. Heck. we've waited years for this ... 9 more days is nothing.

Completely slipped my mind. You mentioned school holidays in January. How long does that last? Do you have a three month break like here in the USA?

I guess if blockbuster time is after Christmas, it makes sense to release it then. That just stinks, though Crazy

I'd still be in the Hobbit forum, but it's just too easy to stumble on one spoiler here and another there. Or you're reading something you think won't have spoilers and *wham* there's something huge in there. Better just to avoid them for now.

I think I can wait nine more days. But I am itching to get back to speculation! I'm so glad we have another couple of years of that.

I'm in the same boat.

I didn't mind the spoilers at all and delighted in them. The tiny glimpse of Smaug was perfect! And I listened to the soundtrack four times - more than I expected I would, to be honest, but I don't feel I'll enjoy the movie less because of it. I even looked at the leaked scans from the art book!

I loved discussing, or reading other people discuss, all the stuff we knew and speculating on how it'd go. I do miss that and it's frustrating not being able to read it anymore. But it's not really speculation now - it's revelation. The mystery is gone. I don't want detailed descriptions of the finished film. That was starting to literally "spoil" the movie for me, so I had to stop, and Ardamírë pretty much jumped out right with me.

Just eight and a half days till The Hobbit... we can make it!

I'm not watching the 5 or 6 minutes of clips from the movie. I want to see them in context. I tried reading one of the spoiler-free reviews on the front page of TORN, but even that was too much after a paragraph or so. I am hugely excited for this movie and nothing's gonna change that.

Lots of stuff...

I'm planning a birding trip with a friend of mine for January and I got financial stuff I need to take care of. Plus, I have to complete two poems for Secret Santa art trades by the end of the month! And I got more writing I want to do besides that in return for some great art gifts I received recently.

I've also been watching some classic Dr Whos with a friend who mostly had just seen the "new" Doctor Who. We started with City of Death, then went back and watched the Key to Time series, and have continued on from there. Just finished Nightmare of Eden last night. The drug hysteria of the 70s and 80s is pretty hillarious from today's perspective! It's also a real shame that Romana I lasted only one season. She was actually a great companion. Romana II has to be one of the worst. Oy. It's pretty much like Flowers for Algernon given all the intelligence she lost when she regenerated. Plus her spine. Can't wait to get some new companions in E-Space. Looking forward to seeing how my friend reacts to Logopolis.

And I also finally watched The Life of Birds. I only started getting really interested in birds a couple years ago, so I'm still learning a lot. Had fun following a Pileated Woodpecker around a forest near where I live over the weekend.

Revelation

That's a good way of putting it. It really has moved beyond speculation to just being flat out told how the movie plays out. And I don't want that. It's one of the reasons that I'm not watching the clips either. I didn't watch the one from last week, and I won't watch these.

Daniel and Ataahua have both said nothing too spoilery is happening in there right now, but I know that's going to change in the next week. People will be dropping spoiler bombs everywhere, especially after the film opens on the 12 for some people. It's much easier to just get out now and avoid it all.

I'm glad other people feel the same! I'm sure we'll be doing this again next year and the year after Cool

What are you most looking forward to seeing?

Let's talk some Hobbit! Anyone who is reading the reviews and descriptions of th movie, please do NOT participate. Thanks!

I'm really looking forward to Radagast. I absolutely am thrilled with his design and think he's going to be awesome. Plus, it's kinda like a whole new story since he wasn't in the book and I have no idea how it'll turn out! Sometimes, I don't enjoy the truly iconic scenes like Eowyn killing the Witchking or Gollum and Frodo at Mt Doom quite as much because I have replayed them in my head so many times, there's little left for the film to fill in. I'm worried that Riddles in the Dark will be the same way. I do love Andy Serkis's Gollum, however, so I'm still looking forward to it,

I'm also really excited about Thorin and seeing how he turns out. Well, not as excited as some of the ladies here, I suppose, but I find the character fascinating and I'm looking forward to seeing someone who isn't so one-sidedly good or evil. I love tragic heroes and I'm betting Thorin will be a great one. Everything I've seen from Richard Armitage tells me he's up to the task, even though I'm not really familiar with his other work.

Also hugely looking forward to seeing how the dwarven history and dwarven society (women and all that) turn out on screen. Tolkien didn't flesh this stuff out too much, so I guess that's kina like the Radagast storyline - it should be all new.

I'm also hugely looking forward to seeing the Eagles, weirdly enough. In the last tv spot I watched before I gave them up, there was a mind-blowingly beautiful shot of the eagles that I want to see on the big screen reallly bad!

The spoiler bombs were already too much for me!

When I left, I already was seeing descriptions posted from people who had seen the movie, even before the embargo lifted! I think some detailed stuff from twitter. It was too much.

I did see the clip of Bilbo acquiring Sting, but found it hard to digest without context. It looked great, however. I am 100% confident that this movie will look stellar. All I wonder about is the script, really. And since I loved LotR, I think this'll be good too.

I'm looking forward to

The dwarf history and the White Council scenes. We basically know how the rest of the story goes, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do with this other material.

I really want to like Radagast, but right now I'm not sold on his appearance. I hope that he works amazingly well in the film, but right now I'm not holding my breath. He seems too crazy and out-there for my liking. We shall see, though.

As for scenes from the book, I'm very much looking forward to the unexpected party. It's such a fantastic part of the book, and I'm really hoping it's just as fantastic in the film. From what we've seen so far, especially with the Misty Mountains song, I think it will be great. I'm also really looking forward to riddles in the dark. I think it was Garfemaio's review that said the sequence is wonderful, so I'm holding on to that. She also said that the ending was really good, which is something I've been worried about, so that was reassuring.

I'm looking forward to

the feeling of the movie. For me it isn't a single scene or a person, I want to be taken back to Middle-earth, and I really hope they can take me back with this movie. I want to see The Shire in all its greeness. The various personalities of the dwarves. Bilbo's reaction to all that is happening to him.

I love to see the trailers, but, as many here, I don't want a scene-by-scene breakdown. I want to enjoy it all in one go, the visual, the sounds, the emotions. And you can't get that from a breakdown. I have read a few reports, but the once I read didn't really give spoilers about the movie. They just said what they thought about it, if it fitted their idea and the visual, not the storyline.

Now I just have to wait till December 12th, first seeing in IMAX 3D at 0.12AM and than that evening a hfr 3D screening (didn't know they had them here, but noticed it today and immediately bought tickets),

Going back...

It has to be one of the main reasons I'm so looking forward to these films. In my opinion, the LOTR films are astounding, and I'm so excited to be able to return to Middle-earth for another journey.

I'm also looking forward to HFR 3D. I'm tired of hearing everyone else's opinions of it; I just want to see it for myself and have my own opinion Tongue

I'm looking forward to The Hobbit, but . . .

. . . I've been sitting here this afternoon listening to my LotR soundtracks, just the three TE CDs, not the longer CRs, which I also have---anyway, hearing this wonderful music reminded me how much I love LotR, first the book, then the movie. LotR has been an important part of my life for many, many years.

(I read LotR first and only went back later to read TH, and I'm sure I've read LotR six times for every time I've read TH.)

I'm sure I'm not the only one who will enjoy TH:AUJ and the other two movies, but won't be blown away like I was with LotR, not because of any flaws in the film, but because the story isn't my favorite. I fully expect to like the LotR movies more than the TH movies, simply because I prefer the book.

Does this make sense?

I have been reading the spoilers, looking at the photos, etc., but with much less involvement than I was looking at the RotK spoilers 9 years ago. (9 years?!? It isn't possible....)

It makes perfect sense

I've been doing some talking to myself making sure I'm not expecting my experience with LOTR to be repeated. It can't be... for lots of reasons.

I think it's freed me up, a little, to maybe enjoy the movie on a completely non-LOTR, non-Tolkien way. LOTR had to live up to something - in my mind. I'm not sure I need that from The Hobbit. Just like strong fans of Batman might have a certain level of assessment of Batman movies... a strong fan of Tolkien will have a certain level of assessment of Tolkien movies.

I'm hoping to go into The Hobbit movie as 'not a strong fan of Tolkien.' I'm aiming for the eyes of any of my fans who might have read the books but never joined a fansite's message board or anything. :-p

holidays- depends

On what you are doing.

For school kids, last day of term 4 this year is December 21 and then they don't go back until January 30 (teachers start Jan 29)
They have three two week breaks spread through the year at the break of each term (term1/2, 2/3, 3/4)
This is government schools, the private schools do it differently. (they have 3 week breaks)

for university students, last day of class is around the end of October, last exam (if you have them) is around the end of november, first day of class is usually the first week of March. (could be last days of feb) and you have about a month off in the middle of the year, but only 1 week break during the semester. (2 semesters) I am going to miss my 3 month summers.

I'm planning to see 2D first. Also, beards for women.

I was thinking about that when we went to see Life of Pi in 2D. 3D is fun, but I spend so much time looking around thinking "gee whiz, look at that!" that I forget to watch the movie itself. I want my first experience of The Hobbit to be of the story, and then I can go "gee whiz!" later. I'm also not going to the first showing. Our local theater has screwed up three of four movies we've gone to recently, having trouble finding people who know how to work the digital projectors. I'm going to wait a few days, hoping they can get it working properly.

I'm neither avoiding spoilers nor seeking them out. Just going with the flow.

I did read greendragon's interview with Richard Armitage, and was tickled to see that he thinks beards for women will be the next fashion trend. Maybe I'll stop shaving :-D

Ditto to a lot of that for me

except that I did read "The Hobbit" first, when I was 12. I liked it, but I fell in love with Aragorn in Bree. I used to try to read The Hobbit each time I read LotR, kind of out of a feeling that I should, but it was never my favorite part of the story.

And your last paragraph describes me too.

That I could be as excited for The Hobbit as I was for LOTR. But I don't think I can help myself, especially after seeing one of the recent tv spots. It has me absolutely convinced that I will love this movie. I had tried to go in with no expectations and be pleasantly surprised, but I don't think that's working Shocked

I find it difficult to compare my feelings about LOTR and The Hobbit in comparison to each other. They're such completely different animals in almost every way. I adore The Hobbit for what it is, and I adore the LOTR for what it is.

I'm not sure I caught all that

Blush

The way the seasons go in different hemispheres is messing me up. Plus, school here is generally fall-spring with a few breaks for holidays in between. There's normally two weeks a Christmas, and that's the longest break until summer.

3D is distracting for me as well

So I'll be seeing it in 2D for the first time, too. I'll see it in HFR 3D later, but I just want to enjoy my return to Middle-earth without being distracted by the visual effects.

I read the interview with Richard as well. We should have the TORn women grow their beards and show us the pictures! Tongue

seasons

yes, it's confusing.

We have the summer break over December/January and a smaller break in the middle of the year where as you have your middle year Christmas break. (we also have 2 week quarter breaks) You know how in the USA the class of 2012 actually started their senior year in 2011? Well, here the class of 2012 started in 2012 (and finish 6 months after their USA friends of the same "class of 2012")

University is just wack- 12 week semesters (2 per year) with a week of break in the middle (not counted towards the 12) and 3 weeks of exams after each semester. And a LONG holiday. :)

Cr*ppy windblown photo, but I did get the first cheap test-run knit done, though not properly finished and blocked. I'll know what to change for the next ones.

Brilliant idea!

I've spent about 1/100th of the time I planned to on the Hobbit Board... and now it's covered with spoiler land-mines!!

I plan to see each of the filming formats at least once; but right now, I plan to spend most of my viewings in the old-fashioned format.

To pass the time until next Thursday night, I'm finishing my prepping for the Line Party I'll be hosting for the midnight 0-1 show. Trivia games, prizes, costume contest, who drove the furtherst...stuff like that :) I'm going to wear my wraith costume to keep warm whilst out tending the line-stander who are snaked out-of-doors.

I've also been passing the time putting together... with the help of several sibbies... a gift guide of Hobbit/LotR goodies for Holiday Shoppers. It's a list that will eventually be posted on the homepage; but with time running out for online shopping, I figured I'd stick it over on the Gaming and Collecting Board. Go have a peek if you need some gift ideas :)

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

This thread feels like a refuge already

I feel like reminiscing, to ease my tension a bit. On January 8th 2002 my brother took me to watch FotR. Neither of us had read the books, and I had no concept of what was in it for me. I just went along because it was his birthday, and even though he hadn't read the book, he was excited about the movie. I have to admit I was skeptical at first. The first 10 minutes or so I kept thinking "This is stupid, how can a ring have power? This doesn't make sense, I don't get it." I wish I could say I was drawn in after that, but I think I would be lying. I think for some reason I didn't want to like it. What I do remember is looking at my watch and thinking "well this can't be much longer, it's been nearly 3 hours already." This was when Sam and Frodo were looking at Mt. Doom in the distance, and I was relieved because I knew that they really only had to go on and toss the ring in the volcano, how much longer could that take? Then bam, credits. What the...? Why is the movie over? They were practically there already!? What? A sequel? A whole other movie just for that? TWO MOVIES? And I have to wait HOW LONG? I knew it was a trilogy, but for some reason I believed they would be 3 different stories. Crazy
I don't know when the change happened. Luckily that year I started a new job for a movie theatre chain, and had some awesomely nerdy colleagues there who did a good job drawing me in. After TTT I finally read the book, and by the time ROTK rolled around, I was completely drawn in. Not nearly as much as my brother though. See, he never reads, he just doesn't like it. But he read the book right before the 3rd film came out, in 6 days I think (took me several weeks). Then a few weeks later for his birthday in 2004 I gave him a boxed set of several of Tolkiens works, including the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and some other stuff (4 or 5 books in total). He read them all within just a few weeks. I believe he's never touched them after that, nor any other books that I would know of. To this day I don't quite understand what happened there.
On Tuesday he is coming to visit me, and we will see AUJ together, and I know I will think back to that first movie experience, and laugh at myself a little. He hasn't read the Hobbit btw, he never wanted to read a children's book. I'm dying to see if he will read it after next week.

Exactly how I feel

Leading up to the release of LOTR movies, I was hugely apprehensive they would murder the most important book of my existence, and I needed some of the spoilers to dampen the angst and prepare myself for the inevitable changes.

I'm nowhere near as emotionally invested in The Hobbit. I'm sure I'll go, but I won't stand in line for a midnight showing. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but it won't be a life-changing experience, either way. I'm sure I'll find things to criticize, but it won't get my shorts in a bunch.

"That is one thing that Men call 'hope.' Amdir we call it, 'looking up.' But there is another which is founded deeper. Estel we call it, that is 'trust.' It is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and First Being. If we are indeed the Eruhin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any enemy, not even by ourselves. This is the last foundation of estel, which we keep even when we contemplate the End. Of all His designs the issue must be for His children's joy."

Your line party sounds like fun. I do wish someone in my area was putting together something like that.

Great story

And interesting perspective of a movie-firster! Funny how you thought it would take no time for them to get to Mount Doom Laugh

You bring up a point that I think is worth considering. Your brother hasn't yet read The Hobbit but you think he might now. I wonder how movie-firsters for The Hobbit will take to the book. I've slowly come to terms with a hobbit trilogy, but I understand that it's going to be significantly different from the book. It's part of the reason I'm making my little brother and sister read the book first, because I want them to love the book which might be difficult if they've first seen a movie adaptation in the vein of LOTR. I'm expecting many people who watch the film to pick up the book and wonder if they've gotten the right book or not. Hmm...

Obviously, they need to rewrite the book!

Obviously PJ&Co should rewrite The Hobbit to be more like the movie, inserting the Dwarf history and Dol Guldur stuff as well as anything new they've made for the movies! Evil

That is a cool story about your brother. If he read Unfinished Tales, he'd be familiar with the Istari and the Quest for Erebor, at least, though I'd guess he wouldn't remember much after reading through them quickly ten years ago!

Has anyone watched the new 13 minute documentary with the writers? How spoilery is it? Does it show a bunch of whole scenes or describe exactly how the story will be laid out?

Watch it

I just did about half an hour ago. It was fantastic. There were no whole scenes or anything like that. It basically tells the history of the dwarves (from the book, nothing spoilery) and sets up why they recruit Bilbo. It also talked about how the films will connect with LOTR such as with the trolls, etc.

The one thing that might stop you, though, is that it showed some Alan Lee drawings of the Lonely Mountain, like the entrance and the inside.

Book vs. Movie

I'm just afraid people won't like the book because it seems the tone is radically different, which could make a big impact on how one views the book.

I'm avoiding the Hobbit forum, not all things Hobbit Wink

I see no problem with continuing to watch tv spots (which I've done, #10 on the hobbit facebook page was astounding!) or documentaries/behind-the-scenes. I know they'll have some tidbits about the films, but the Hobbit forum is another animal entirely. That is a dark place where spoilers are dropped like bombs and scene descriptions run rampant. It's practically anarchy! Shocked

Ok it might not be that crazy (yet!) but it will be.

it's not 3 weeks per student!

My university is MASSIVE. There are at least 20,000 students on my campus (the largest- but there are at least 2 more major ones in my city for that university) so they have to have a 3 week period so they can schedule everyone's exams in. You have max 4 exams for your 4 subjects. (some people overload to 5 but that's a recipe for crazy.) Not every subject has an exam, either.

There's a Bard and Leggy picture floating around?

Interesting. I'm not going out of my way to see it, but if I do, it won't bother me. Obviously, we know they're both in the films, so seeing a picture of them isn't really a spoiler in my book.

I've already seen what Bard looks like anyway - from that leaked vlog 8 alternative (which was excellent, by the way). And of course, we all know what Legolas looks like in general, so seeing a picture of him in a different costume than normal isn't a big deal.

I still can't believe you don't get the film for such a long time. Were the LOTR films this late for you as well?
