Quick report from Wellington

No pictures yet, but I'll post them when I can.

I'm sitting in a coffee shop on Cuba Street, waiting for Delwyn to arrive. Deej is catching up on e-mail, LRon is taking a trip to Mt. Victoria, Garfiemao is off somewhere, and Rosie-with-the-Ribbons is no doubt resting her voice after her live radio interview this morning. I'll let her tell you all about it .Cool

We've had an amazing time so far, and last night's party was incredible. Deej, Garfiemao, Tehanu, another friend and I started our Welly adventure on Sunday by participating in a world record attempt to build the most sandcastles in an hour. The current record is 643, just established a month ago, and the Kiwis were determined to smash that record into tiny pieces. The event was partially sponsored by WEta, and it was a fundraiser for a neo-natal hospital. Only those crazy Weta folks, on the verge of releasing a major motion picture, would take the time to make 100 sand castle molds for the record attempt.

Nearly 1,000 people participated, and needless to say we indeed smashed the record. Our unofficial count was more than 1,500 sand castles, and even though the record won't be verified for a couple months, we are certain that New Zealand will hold the record for a long time. We had a great time, despite the sand in our ears and a little sunburn, and helped raise thousands of dollars for the hospital. Evangeline Lilly joined Richard Taylor to announce the results and hand out a few prizes.

Afterward, we visited the hobbit artisan market and lightened our wallets at the different booths and food stalls. Garfiemao and I tried the bacon and egg buttty, which was great. Sunday ended with a group dinner at Dockside Restaurant. It was the first outing for the whole tour group, so we exchanged stories and got to know each other better.

Monday saw another visit to the hobbit market, and then a group trip to Weta Cave. The shop is bustling, and they just prepared a new video describing the scope of Weta's work, and we became one of the first visitors to the new Window into the Workshop, a piece of Weta Workshop that's now open to the public.

The Red Carpet Tours team and our very own TORN hosted a Hobbit Premiere Costume Party on Monday night, and it was nothing short of amazing. The costumes were incredible, and we had some celebrity visitors that took our breath away. Jed Brophy was master of ceremonies, and it seemed like the fun was just getting started when he announces our first guest - none other than Peter Jackson and Elijah Wood!!!! They stayed for more than an hour, soon to be followed by Philippa Boyens (I got to shake her hand!), Andy Serkis, several of the dwarves, Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger, Kiran Shah, Gino Acevado, and others I can't remember. Wow.

Today (Tuesday) got off to a late start, but I've been wrapping up my Christmas shopping, and we're going to a preview party for an exhibition of Greg Broadmore's Dr. Grordbort. Tomorrow is the big day!

Wellington is gearing up for the big event. There are Hobbit banners, posters and pennants everywhere. Hotels are filling up and the streets are busy. Courtney Place has been closed to traffic. I haven't been over by the Embassy today, but as soon as Atahuaa arrives I'm sure we'll get over there to plan our strategy for Wednesday. The entertainment starts at 3, there's a concert by Neil Finn at 4, and the parade starts at 4:30. I don't exactly know where we will be, but we'll send news as soon as we can!

I found an article and picture of the sand-castle building. Hey, where are you in this pic? Wink

Hobbit Premiere Costume Party - an amazing night! (re-post from Main)

Happy fans, stunning costumes, wonderful music and to top it all off, we were visited by Peter Jackson, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis, Richard Taylor, Tania Rodgers, Gino Acevedo, Philippa Boyens, and a whole parcel of assorted dwarves - Stephen Hunter, Peter Hambleton and John Callen, to name just a few - well, I've surely left some names off the list and I'm sorry for that. But it was a wonderful, wonderful night, and we're just bowled over at the generosity of the stars who gave their time and enthusiasm so generously. It was fantastic to be able to thank them and show our appreciation for their hard, hard work.

Huge thanks to William Kircher (Bifur) who entertained the crowd with his great band California Dreamers - their Misty Mountains song was a huge hit. Jed Brophy (Nori) was great with his band The Last Resort, and Jed also did a superb job as MC, keeping the crowd happy and keeping everything going smoothly.

Pics will no doubt follow (there were plenty of you out there with cameras, so please send us your faves); meanwhile check out the amazing scenes captured on local media and the reports coming in on Facebook.

Surprise appearance of Peter Jackson and cast members at the TORn costume party (repost by wellingtonhobbit)

I'm sure most of you have heard about their appearance already. Anyway, I did some filming of what Peter Jackson and the others shared with us last night.

We were further down the beach, I think

That picture was taken nearer the entrance to the event.

Rosie has asked for a link to her interview and I'm sure she will provide a transcript when she can.

The dwarf actors who attended last night were lovely. One of them mentioned that they had been hearing about the great relationship between the fans and the cast/crew of the LOTR movies and they were looking forward to seeing it for themselves.

Thanks for sharing this!

How exciting to see Peter, Elijah, and all of them!
I couldn't be happier for all the LOTR fans there (unless I'd been there myself!).
Thanks again for posting this video. So cool!!!

Yes, I'm a famous NZ-visitor

This is the link: http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/auckland/player/ondemand/1396140628-huge-hobbit-fan-comes-to-nz-for-premiere

I was approached at the party by a journalist (together with Entmaiden and Deej) and they did come back to me later the night with the question if they could call me in the morning. And since jetlag is useful for something and I wake up around 6 anyway, no problem.

I met Ataahua (and I hopes she forgives me for spelling her name wrong probably) and she heard me live on the radio. So I guess I'm really famous! Wink

The party was amazing. Wellington is amazing.
And I don't have much internet-time. More will follow!!!

*flying tackle hug* WOW!! Awesome!! :D

I just watched a bunch of clips and reports on TORN's Party.. and WOW! I kept squinting and searching for deej, or Garf, or you... and BANG... there's Tehanu!! I burst out laughing and nearly bounced outta my chair! And Peter & Elijah Wood showed up!! HOW COOL IS THAT?! You shook Philippa's hand!?!? *spasm* Okay... right there I'd be content to call the adventure done and be satisfied. One of the clips showed Peter walking among the party-goers signing autographs and praising the fans... he so very much appreciates us and understands what all of this means to us. He's a fan, too; but what astounds me is that after all of this time and all the thousands of hours of work he's put into these films, he's never lost that lovin' feelin'. Bless 'im.

Oh cripes, the energy of that party just pours right out of my monitor!! The proceeds of TORN's party are going to such a great cause. I'm so proud to be a part of TORn and so envious of everyone who is in Wellington RIGHT NOW! Awesome!

As soon as you said you were on Cuba Street sipping coffee, I was right there. I love that stretch of road and still want to get back to that thrift shop across from the tattoo parlour where some famous tattoos were had ;)

Only in Wellington can you go from sandcastles to a world premier red-carpet extravaganza! I can imagine deej, Garf, LRon... all of you... are in a daze much of the time in disbelief that you're really there. I'm so freakin' happy!!! :D

Thank you for the update! My face is starting to cramp up from smiling so much!!

*massive hug*

Tell everyone HOWDY for me!!!! Need I say it? HAVE FUN!!!!! :D

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

I know, right?!

Same thing with me -- as soon as I read that she was in a coffee shop on Cuba, I was there. Actually, I took a mental stroll from Lambton Quay up across Manners and over to Cuba. Then back down to Courtenay and down towards the Embassy. I've walked on that beach so many times and I can just see it strewn with sand castles. And I've got a webcam open on my computer where I can see the red carpet and the people starting to gather. If I hadn't just been earlier this year, I think I would have had to have gone for this. Because....well, just because. And because Wellington. Just....Wellington. gramma understands this.

Someone will watch the movie this afternoon while sitting in a seat with my name on it. So whoever you are, halfway around the world, watch and enjoy a little bit extra, to have enough to share with me.

My heart is there, just like yours is, right, gramma?

My ankle tattoo was done there

It was cool to be in the same shop, with the photos of the guys all around - pictures taken while they were getting theirs done. I have a koru on the outside of my left ankle, actually almost directly over the ankle bone (I nearly fainted while it was being done, and literally saw stars). I wanted it in all black work, but the guy convinced me to have it done in green, which actually looks very nice.

It's a scruffy area up around there, but there are several shops that still sell vinyl LPs, and I found several treasures. I also have a small silver bird feeder that I got in a shop further down on Cuba (closer to Victoria/Courtenay).

I don't know when you were there, but you may know that Blanket Man was a fixture of Cuba Street. I'd seen him on every visit. Sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago -- he was quite an icon.

I was there in March of '08

I don't remember Blanket Man. Sounds like I missed a local landmark! Yes, it's a scruffy area, but very personable, and we had a good time walking around before our appt at Roger's. I have a White Tree with the seven stars at the top of my left arm, where I can hide it with a sleeve or not, depending.

It was just earlier this year that Blanket Man died. Here is a link to wikipedia about him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Hana

I realize that ignorance of the law is no excuse, so I will freely admit that I am ignorant of the TORn law about posting a link. I only visit here occasionally, unlike in Former Days when I was here all day long, practically every day. If I have broken a rule about posting a link, please excuse.

Thanks!

I was a bit afraid how it would go so early in the morning after a party. So I had a wake up call half an hour early. With a cup of tea to clear the voice and mind it worked out well.
I was a bit afraid the interviewer could be a negative person, who thought all of The Hobbit frenzy was just crazy. But luckily he was really kind and asked just general questions that were easy to answer.

And I was really so happy with the party, it was just so amazing to be there. I had expected a few dwarves to show up. But PJ, Elijah, Andy, Richard, Tania, Philippa and so many others, wow I was totally star struck. Didn't even think about getting out to meet or take a picture with PJ and Elijah. They were so crowded with fans and press, I was just happy with being in the same room with them and hearing them talking to the crowds. But Richard Taylor just hang around a long time. Talking to people, having drinks and having fun like he was one of the fans. So I approached him and asked for a picture, and he didn't mind. So now I have a picture of myself with one of the most creative people I know in the world!
