Due credit to Dark Jackal for this.

It has become a real pleasure to read or listen to this actor.

Excellent interview. Very interesting to read that, as many people suspected, he interviewed for Bard. The audition script for Thorin appears to be something special that they put together to reflect various aspects of Thorin's character (this is made clearer in another interview) and what finally nailed it for RA, I reckon, is that the fact he came prepared and was on the same wavelength when he talked to PJ about the character.

Good to see him without a beard.

There's also one with Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis

Would be cool to hear his actual discussion with PJ on how he intended to portray Thorin

Armitage seems much more earnest and intellectually driven in his interviews than most other actors I know of. He must have been an absolute joy to work with.

"After all, I believe that legends and myths are largely made of 'truth', and indeed present aspects of it that can only be received in this mode; and long ago certain truths and modes of this kind were discovered and must always reappear." Professor Tolkien, 1951

He does

No doubt it helps that his favourite book is Lotr and his first theater experience was in a play of TH! Heart

Martin seems cheeky, polite, and unassumingly enthusiastic. Ian ...i must say i dont find any of his interviews so far particularly enlightening or interesting, he just seems to be repeating the same thing...

But RA's interviews are very captivating.

He describes how he and PJ explored Thorin

in a long interview in the French movie magazine, L'Ecran Fantastique:

"All of us spent some time discovering the character when the production of the film started. Philippa, Fran and Peter had a very precise idea of the way they wanted Thorin to behave, and I thought their concept was fantastic because it was clear, perfectly justified, and would allow the character to develop over the course of the three films. The main idea's that Thorin's a hardened warrior who will come to life little by little as he fulfils his destiny. What's more, I remember asking them why they'd chosen a forty-year-old guy to play such a role since it might have been more appropriate to cast someone older. They told me they needed an actor capable of showing a lot of energy in the fight scenes and expressing physically all the rage that Thorin gives vent to in order to reconquer his kingdom. We all worked to achieve that, the decisions concerning the way he'd speak and behave and the choices he'd make throughout the story were taken together. It was a very democratic process during which Philippa, Fran and Peter listened to my ideas attentively, while I also found huge inspiration in their suggestions. That allowed me to let myself go completely when acting and to follow the filmmaker's directions with complete confidence. I knew that Peter Jackson had reflected upon even the smallest detail of a scene and the reactions of the characters. All his instructions were pertinent."

Thank you, lexie of C19, for translating this.

RichardArmitageNet has put up the original in French

and says a translation is coming soon. Keep an eye on that or go and hunt for the partial translation (a work in progress) on C19. It really is very in depth and worth reading.

There is also stuff scanned from the special Hobbit edition of Rolling Stone mag on the same page - and that's in English, LOL!

The translation is now partially done:

Thank you for that, it was a very interesting read.

I have great faith in RA being a great Thorin in terms of his portrayal of the character.

That L'ecran Fantastique interview is wonderful

and I give lots of props to the interviewer, who clearly knew the subject and asked insightful questions. I thought RA's responses were excellent, thoughtful and detailed, but someone had to ask so he could share his thoughts.

There's so much going on beneath the surface in Thorin's character, and it's a delight to find out some of the reasoning behind what we see of him on the screen.

Yes, the French interview was worthy of the front page here.

A pity it has got rather buried amongst these threads. The interviewer was really good but Armitage always gives a thoughtful answer even to the less than demanding questions. I think we're lucky that we've got an actor who has thought so much about his role, has immersed himself in Tolkien and who will doubtless carry the part of Thorin brilliantly - even with a short beard.

Well said.

You're right, RA does give thoughtful answers to all questions, but it is nice that this interviewer has given us (and him) the chance to explore the movie making and character building issues in greater depth.

And judging from vlog #9, the beard isn't always so short!

I get the strong feeling that Thorin, portrayed by Armitage, will be the most complex and interesting character in both Middle Earth trilogies! //

I've got a feeling you might be right!

I've always thought that Thorin was much, much more than simply an angry, greedy dwarf, even when I read the book when I was young.

PS. The French interview (as opposed to the Spanish one, which is what this thread is supposed to be about) is so good, I have just started a thread for it all of its own. Extra translation of a very long article is going up all the time.

You are not the only one

I think hes much more interestig than aragorn for instance, to compare both kings.

Him and Martin have to carry this trilogy, and from what i have seen, Thorin will be amazing. Evidently, this is just my emotion, not a knowledge of facts but i have a strong, growing confidence in Richard Armitage.

*ack* I think I just made myself a little sick, there.

If we can't agree to share Fili, we could always mud wrassle for him.

Agreed, Thorin is quite good looking, in a rough, less modern , lordly way.
