The Magic Purse is in!

........well at least it is listed as William's war gear in the Games Workshop characters details. See thread below.
Apologies for a new thread, I just wanted to wind up DanielLB Sly

My god, I've never clicked on a thread quick enough.

If only Games Workshop was fully based on the films.

Unsure

Good catch though!

I think I'm going to avoid the Hobbit board (and any particularly spoilery threads), until I've seen the film.

I never noticed the purse before when I read the book

But I got introduced to it on this forum. It became some kind of a running gag hehe.
I am 100% sure that if I had never heard of this purse before, and when I would see it for the first time, I would be like: ...Laaaame...
But now I know for certain that it will go something like this: Daniel! xD

(Just saying:p)

I think that there's a fair chance of seeing it, a point of view encouraged by this news

From what I've seen so far it seems that PJ is making a real effort (mostly) to be true to the book whilst adding in various other canonical and non-canonical bits to provide explanation and background context. With the expansion into three films it's even more likely that little details like the purse will be picked up and used (or at least I certainly hope so!)Wink

The storybook says that Bilbo tries to steal a

Knife. Which would be an easy replacement for the talking purse. I live in hope.

I'm probably barking mad for wanting it in the films ;-)

But I've always been very serious. It's the one of a few details I remember vividly when I first read The Hobbit.Evil

I remember it, too. I almost dropped the book and then reread to make sure it said what I thought it said.

Initially I thought it quite silly, but when the dwarves were captured by the elves, I was sure they were going to use it. Then I was sure they would use it against Smaug. Nope. Mentioned one time, then completely forgotten. Unsure

Could you explain to me why you love the talking purse so much? Cool

I want it in... but I don't want it to talk!

It doesn't add anything to the plot at all.

So in terms of that, it *doesn't* have to be shown.

But it's one of a few details that I remember when I read The Hobbit for the very first time. We all remember how creepy Riddles in the Dark was on first read, or how magnificent Smaug sounded. But I also remembered this tiny, funny, detail; that is just one reason why the book is so great.

I appreciate that people find it silly, and think it will ruin the tension build up. But I don't. I say include it! And in a film with farting Dwarves, I don't think it's out of place.

And why simplify Tolkien's Middle-earth? It's full of strange creatures and artefacts. I think it's important to show these little things.

Smile

And the other reason is because I'm in the minority. I'm not letting it go.Tongue

So basically...

you're saying the Talking Purse is to The Hobbit what the Fox was to LOTR? Fair enough, though I admit to having far more fondness for the fox. Cool

Exactly that!

Hey, I'd even be happy if the purse was changed to the fox!

I love the small, tiny details. In The Hobbit, it's things like the purse, Bilbo's cold, the Eagle's crown and collars, the Stone Giants, and so on.

I think the fox would've been harder to pull off in the LOTR trilogy. How do you show it thinking?

The fox!

I love foxes, and especially the fox in the LOTR book! I hope PJ make amends by showing us an elegant red fox lurking about near Bilbo & co.

If not, well, PJ did pretty well on the animal department this time, nonetheless. Who can resist Radagast's hedgehogs? And with film 2, we'll also see Beorn's creatures. That will be marvellous.

The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

Hmm

It's near impossible to follow the book at 100% there... the best solution IMO is to just zoom in at the fox, with a suspicious look on his face.

Or they could just give the fox a monologue narrated by Morgan Freeman!

The perfect place to insert the fox would've been the scene where Sam can't sleep

It could've creeped in. Merely showing it would probably have sufficed.

I think most of us decided

that just a glimpse of the fox somewhere in the background would be enough for us....just as an insider nod. And we would know what he was thinking. But since PJ turned the walk to Crickhollow into a race to the Ferry, there really wasn't room even for a fox cameo. Alas....

I do find it silly, but not TO silly, and I am a fan of silly things Smile

Also, I am a great supporter of the minority, so therefor I feel a strong urge to back you up everytime I see a purse-discussion! Wink
