Soooo glad it was posted tonight

Don't think I would have been able to sleep :D

"'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand. What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.''

I must say

that i'm actually looking forward to seeing the Goblin King. I thought he wouldn't work just from the art. However, seeing him in motion for a short time has convinced me that he is something to get excited about

For a moment, I thought...

...that the music for the Bunny Sled scene was Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" ! (anyone remember Elmer Fudd singing "kill the wabbit!" to that tune?)

Lots of good stuff. And "look who it is" = our first line from the Goblin King? //

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Also, "Beard Mocap Technician", that's quite the specific job title Tongue

So much greatness here.

Stunning, stunning, stunning. Every bit of it. The new footage with the trolls is great. Is that ending to the sword fight between the goblin and Bilbo new footage? I loved that.

Once again, everything is coming down to the wire. It'd be so easy for a lesser filmmaker, with a less committed team, to just say "screw it, we don't need those extra shots that'll make the movie better," but that's not Peter, and he's working to the very last to make it amazing.

He's such an amazing person, and someone so capable of recognizing and encouraging that level of commitment from the incredibly talented people he's amassed to make these films.

Hat. Off.

It's looking more and more like this will truly be something special.

A lot of the shots looked much more complete. It almost looks 3D without even being 3D if that makes sense. I can already tell I've never seen a film that looks like this at all. This may actually be pretty revolutionary.

I think digital filmmaking, and 3D, may have truly come of age with The Hobbit. Just as I think CG characters didn't come of age till Gollum.

Revolutionary is the right word.

Might Thorin be growing out a beard at (what I assume to be) Erebor?

At 6:13 and 9:38, he has this braided piece of hair beneath his shin. Dare I hope for at least a little beard-growth for our dwarven king?

Might be that, actually.

Balin does indeed look younger in that shot, with grey hair rather than white. Might be the coming of the dragon, rather than after the dragon is killed (as I thought it was).

I saw them at a book signing at Weta Cave in September and asked how long they were going to stay here.
"Forever!" Howe said. " We're chained to our desks!"
And I guess they were. It's interesting to see what exactly they were still doing. I wouldn't have thought they were needed for post-production.

That is almost certainly a scene from the destruction of Erebor, judging from Thorin's expression in that scene. I think it's pretty likely that he tears or cuts his beard, or even has it burned off by dragonfire soon afterwards.

Transcript, Vlog 9

Radagast: Show me!

PJ: Welcome to the theater at Park Road Post. This is our post-production facility in Wellington and this is where we're spending a huge amount of time at the moment, just working on getting The Hobbit finished. It's due to be completed literally 2 days before the premiere. Hopefully. *chuckles* So we'll give you a look at where we're at with post-production. You're going to see a lot of sleep-deprived people in this blog. Everyone's working around the clock to get the film finished. So everything begins at editorial.

Dan Best, First Assistant Editor: So, here's "The Bunker"; Editorial. I am Dan Best, I am First Assistant Editor on The Hobbit. So next door to us is the cutting room. Jabez and Peter are in there, busy cutting Film 2 at the moment.

PJ: We were shooting this with 150 people on the set, and then here we are sitting here and it just comes down to Jabez and I, two of us. *laughs* The last two men standing get to edit the movie. So it's quite a relaxing and enjoyable process. (to Jabez) And while you're putting that together, I'm going to make another cup of tea. (to camera) When Jabez has something very simple to do...

Jabez Olssen, Editor: *laughs*

PJ:... that doesn't need me around I get the cups and go make a cup of tea and come back and it's all done!

Jabez: Very good.

Unknown: Hey, welcome to Pre-viz, come on in! Christian's just down this way.

Christian Rivers, Previs Supervisor: We're sort of the front-end creative team that Pete uses to design a lot of his shots.

Marion Davey, Previs Production Manager: We are animating the camera and the characters around to form what's kind of like 3D storyboards, almost at a videogame level.

Christian: Typically you do your previz before your shoot. Obviously they've finished principal photography and we're still prevising a few shots. We've just got a shot turned over from Peter. This is what we get from Editorial sometimes. Basically we get a blank card that says something like "CG Wide Shot Goblins slowly move torture machines towards the Great Goblin's platform". And we've got to turn this stuff around pretty quickly. (on phone) This is Christian over here at previz. We just got a shot turned over that we need some torture machines. Cheers, thanks. Yeah, usually they're pretty quick. Here we go...we have from Weta Workshop some torture machine designs. We need to get these modeled pretty quick, guys.

Modeler: It'll only be a minute or two.

Christian: Be a minute? .....Jerry, what do you know?

Jerry Kung, Senior Previz Artist: I'm making a 3D extravaganza. *makes whooshing noises* It wouldn't be a good shot if it didn't have sound effects. *ssssh, aaaaaahhhhh......*

Christian: The models coming through yet?

Modeler: Yeah, here it is.

Christian: Gerry, can we get textures on that?

Gerry (Clevy?): Oh yeah, sure, no problem. Already on it.

Christian: Already on it?

Gerry: Almost done.

Christian: So the thing is, I've got to turn the stuff around pretty quickly 'cause, you know, the film delivers in like 8 weeks. What do you do, Derrick?

Derrick (Auyoung?): *sighs* I just stare at code all day. *sips coffee*

Christian: So Iggy, you got your torture machines. How's the shot going?

Iggy (Pena?): Yeah, sorry it took so long. But I think this is going to work.

Christian: Pretty cool. Yeah, it looks pretty good. We should send it to Pete and see what he says.

PJ (in Editing): It'll be really cool....cool moment. Let's get the...

Eric Saindon, VFX Supervisor: We just got PJ notes. We're off to talk to a few of the supervisors about what we have to do now on a few extra shots.

*walking through Weta Digital Headquarters*: This is the original building that we had on Lord of the Rings. For Hobbit now we've expanded to 8 different buildings.

Kevin: Used to be an insane asylum, right?

Eric: Yes, this used to be an insane asylum. Still, days like this, it feels like it even so. (in car) We're at the 6 1/2 week mark, not much time left to finish this one. We're at Wexford Road now, this is the original production office for Lord of the Rings but now it's the home of all the animators for Hobbit.

Dave Clayton, Animation Supervisor: So the troll sequence, definitely one of the biggest animation challenges. They're speaking, which is something new for trolls.

William the troll: Are there any more of you little fellows hiding where you shouldn't?
Bilbo: No.

Dave C: Because in Rings they were only grunting. Peter shot it live action on the mo-cap stage. *Actors shooting previous scene in mocap suits* Pete liked the action, but wanted to go a little bit bigger on what the stunt guys were doing. So maybe we do a custom mocap shoot for just those bits?

Director on mocap stage: And...action! That felt good, I'm happy with that. OK. Should we move on?

PJ: We've advanced the art of motion capture quite substantially on The Hobbit, including the detail of motion capturing individual hairs of dwarf's beards.

Jance Rubinchik, Beard Mocap Technician: Come on in, welcome to the Department of Internal Beard-Hairs. We're going to tell you a little bit about what we do here. Kev, can we get you to paint, please?

Austin Eddy, Beard Mocap Technician: Having beards on set is rather dangerous.

Jance: Incredibly dangerous, we've lost a lot of good beards.

Austin: That's right, so we've created a virtual beard in the computer, and what that allows us to do...

Jance: Whoa, layman's terms, please.

Austin: Sorry, sorry. We, um...we have a beard in the computer.

Jance: Motivation here - it's dark, it's stormy, and you're in the mountains. Action! Wind! Rain! Lightning bolts! And cut!

Jance: So this looks great, can we go ahead and propagate this...

Austin: Right! So what I can do, is just by pushing this one button here, and voila! You can see that the beard has now been propagated throughout the film.

Jance: It's the power of beard capture technology. Great job everybody...

PJ: I don't think there's anybody working harder at the moment probably than the Weta Digital artists who have got several hundred CGI shots to do in the last few weeks of post production.

Eric Saindon: We have a lot of shots to deliver each week. In fact, the most shots Weta has really ever delivered. (in meeting) Good luck, let's break the record. Have a great week...

Sat, 27th October. Four weeks to go.

Dave Clayton: Well, it's Saturday at Wexford Road, the first thing we have to do each morning is release the animators. So, shall we do that, are we ready? Are they there? *opens door on room full of animators in pajamas* Wake up! *bangs on pan* WAKEY WAKEY! Come on, sleep is for the weak! Sleep is for the weak! Don't even bother getting dressed!

Eric: If people don't have to leave, we're happy for them to stay. We have people that give massages here, we actually do laundry for people, they get 3 meals.

Man cooking: Scrambled eggs....

John Howe: Conceptual artists eat when they can. (at desk) A concept artist's work is never done.

Alan Lee: Especially on a big effects movie like this. We're still conceptualizing after having been here for 3 years.

John Howe: As long as there's still a shot that has an empty spot, whether it's green or whether it needs something in front, you just keep at it. And we're painfully conscious that behind us are considerable teams of people waiting for artwork to do the 3D and the texturing and the lighting and the animation.

Kevin Sherwood, VFX Producer: The big house where we're going now is where we've put in the Goblin Team. That's the Goblinmobile right there, that's Chris White's vehicle.

Eric: It's exactly the same car my grandmother has.

Kevin: It was apparently a reform school, supposedly, people tell me that they see ghosts in here and that there's claw marks down in the basement.

Eric: So come in if you dare.

Chris White, VFX Supervisor: So what Peter was looking for was to create this whole world underground. So we're creating this Goblin Town with all these different structures and light and walkways and fires, and so this is some of the work in progress.

Raqi Sayed, Senior Lighting TD: A lot of what we're doing on this guy is beauty lighting, 'cause we've got to really highlight all of his warts and all that good stuff. He's quite hideous but he has to look beautiful at the same time.

PJ: Here at Park Road Post Production, just down the corridor, we've got Andrew Lesnie, our DP, doing the color timing of the film.

Andrew Lesnie, Director of Photography: Hi. Welcome to the DI. Yesterday we made Chicken Luxor and today we're going to cook up a Pad Thai. DI is short for "Digital Intermediate". This is part of a process which is called color grading. It is like Photoshop for motion pictures. This is the exterior of Bag End. We filmed this shot in Matamata. We didn't have the most ideal weather on the day but the landscape is still very beautiful, so we actually are just working the original material on this one.

Dave Hollingsworth, Supervising Digital Colourist: Essentially what we do is we start with the raw plate and then we're building up basically a layered grade and the result is what you see there.

Andrew: We also have these dueling lasers, that we can do this.
Dave: This bit of grass right there
Andrew:...as distinct from this bit over here.

Andrew: We've got these lights up for the blog, but traditionally we work in a much darker environment. And we actually work in an environment that's in fact even darker than this, that mimics a cinema.

*shot of Bilbo fighting a goblin*

Dave Whitehead, Sound Designer: Ah, hi, you're at Park Road Post, and this is where we're doing the sound for The Hobbit. Let's go and have a look.

Unfinished shot on screen: "Gollum, gollum"

Dave W: We start the day with a dance, that's the first thing we do, in Sound, and we hand it on....Chris! Take the floor!

Christopher Boyes, Re-recording Mixer: Yeah, do the Fader dance!

Dave W: Fader dance, yeah!

Chris B: You can see Dave has cut 16 layers of sounds for this goblin. And he's done such a cool job, that....we'll see what else I can do to it, which is fun and challenging.

David Farmer, Sound Designer: I think a lot of people don't understand about how a film gets made and how many people it actually takes to piece a soundtrack together. We have dialogue, we have music, and in sound effects alone we break into several categories. Standard sound effects: swords, body falls, doors, things like that. We have Ambiences, which is like some wind, we have some crowd sounds, things like that.

Chris Ward, Supervising Sound Editor: What we're doing here today is just put a little "friends and family and all the other departments" call to come down and be panicked villagers for Dale, for when it gets desolated by Smaug. That's how we rock it in Sound Post here!

Dave W: And here, Matt's cutting the crowds, and all that sort of stuff. We're on our way...*yelling coming from behind all the doors* feels like a scene from The Shining down this hallway. I really wish I had a tricycle. Foley. Ah, they've got the best sounding door.

Brent Bruce, Supervising Sound Editor: Foley's a specific part of the soundtrack which relates to humans. Anything associated with what they touch, how they move, it is recorded by these guys.

John Simpson, Foley Artist: You get to bash stuff, break stuff, drag it, stretch it, bend it.

Craig Tomlinson, Supervising Foley Editor: What makes a great Foley track is often the interpretation of the sound rather than the literal sound itself.

John S: Goblin claws...it's just banjo picks. It makes it very awkward when you go to the toilet in the middle too.

Meanwhile, 18,331 miles away - Abbey Road Studios, London

Peter Cobbin, Senior Recording Engineer: Welcome to Abbey Road, Studio One. This is the place where we make all these fabulous soundtracks, including The Hobbit. And that's what we're doing today. We're back in the studio for a "record day". Full orchestra today.

Karen Elliot, Music Supervisor: There'll be 93 people in their various sections. This is Howard's conductor's podium, so this is where he stands and directs the orchestra from.

Peter C: Abbey Road is legendary with its microphone collection. So here's one that John Lennon sang into when he was a recording artist at the studio. I've never had a shot with one...here, how's it look? Can you get that?

Karen: The musicians will see the music for the first time. They don't rehearse it or anything like that, they just turn up, the sheet music is in front of them and they play.

Woman carrying conductor's score: This is rather important, to make sure these get onto the podium.

Peter C: Here's the control room. It's a real adrenaline rush, to be looking out at the orchestra, that we're kind of in control of this fabulous sound. (orchestra plays) Great, we're happy with that. Let's take a break.

Wellington

Dave W: Theater Two. This is the final mix room, this is where it all comes together.
Voice of Great Goblin: "Well, look who it is!"

Christopher Boyes: We all arrive with tons and tons of sounds, the in the final mix we have to figure out what sound makes sense and what sound doesn't.

Michael Semanick, Re-recording Mixer: You could put a horse vocal on the shot to let us know we're there.

Christopher B: But at the end of the day, hopefully we've got clarity and we are telling the story. And I have to say, it's really fun.

Michael: We've got another 3 weeks - and then another couple films so the journey's long from over, it's just really starting.

PJ: So, that's what's happening at the moment. The premiere is very, very close. But fortunately, people are staying calm, they're staying incredibly disciplined, focusing on their work, we are blessed to have such a sane, sensible team. So there we have it! Gives you a taste of where we are at the moment, but we will catch up with you very very soon and invite you to come along and have a look at our experience at the premieres.

See you at the premiere

Dwarven fight tactics

It's also great to see in some shots, like Goblin Town and Trollshaws, how the dwarves cooperate in fight. The amazing moment at 3:57 when Dwalin rolls over and makes himself a stool, then Thorin jumps on him and launches on one of the Trolls to save another Dwarf, thats just fantastic.

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! Carefully with the plates!

Very interesting to see what the sound guys do as i never truly understood what it is they all get up to - as always its way way more complicated than a layman thinks!

As for the graphics team - they look like they are going to be working flat out til the film comes out, hope they are getting paid a lot, lol.

But it looks like they are all having a fun time even though its hard work - good to have a job you love! It was also interesting to see John and Alan still creating artwork for the film, i kinda thought that would finish now they are in post production. I wonder how many pencils they have got through now, lol.

I have got this feeling.

This movie will be the best movie ever. Everything but the story and plot seems to be of the top most quality. I have total confidence in the team behind this movie.
So now all they gotta do is not screw up Tolkiens great story, and then I can't imagine it being anything but my favorite movie.. Or atleast in the top 3.

And I haven't even got my ticket yet... *sigh*

It's great

Not too many spoilers, lots of nice shots of behind the scenes folks working hard all the time and having some fun, overall a really good vlog. Yet more proof that PJ will still take until the last minute no matter how much time and money he has to make the thing.

At least with digital they don't have to worry about drying out the developed film with hair dryers hours before they have to load it onto a plane.

Sled, sled, rabbit sled

I was wondering how Radagast's sled could get through the forest without snow to slide over. A theory that just popped into my head explains it: there must be some sort of exotic ground foliage in Mirkwood that responds to the impact pressure of the sled's weight by immediately exuding a slippery mucinous gel from its outer leaves, lubricating the sled on contact and allowing it to move freely over the forest floor at high speeds without tumbling and dragging wildly due to uneven friction.

Or maybe he just keeps a can of Crisco in the back of the sled to grease the runners.

There was a man.
There was a lady.
There was a Dragon Lord.

At least at 9.38, Balin's got grey beard. And Thorin looks younger in both shots, as well. So it's from some kind of a prologue. We probably won't be shown any parts from "There and Back Again" until after "Desolation of Smaug" is released.

Seeing Shore and the orchestra at work was astounding. It was so beautiful.

Can I just say how utterly amazed I am by the orchestra? Being able to sit down and play without ever having seen the music is a skill beyond belief. Their talent is incredible. I took piano lessons for 7 years when I was young and still play now and again, but there's no way on earth I could do what they do (of course, that's why theyre in the orchestra and not me Tongue).

Looks like the concept art of Thorin with more beard is that of young Thorin.

I'm guessing the Eagles will not speak English. When Bard talks to the thrush, it will also not be as confusing to the crowd because Radagast, Gandalf, and Beorn will have done so by then.

good to have another VLOG this close to release but

where does the Goblin King's line come in? I've watched the vlog and didn't catch it.

So Frodo Baggins boarded the great ship and passed on into the west till the sweet fragrance on the air filled his sense and the sound of singing came over the water. Then it seemed to him that, as in a dream, he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country. The third age of Middle Earth was over, the days of the Rings had passed and the story and song of those times was at an end.

Beardless as mourninig

This has been my speculation for a while. I was confused and a little dismayed when I saw that he didn't have a beard, so I've been hoping that they incorporate it into the story. Im assuming that is a show of mourning, or perhaps shame; perhaps as exiled king he is not worthy of his dwarven beard until his kingdom is reclaimed?

I think PJ is taking Saruman's appraisal of Raddy too literally

Quote
"Radagast the Bird-tamer, Radagast the simple, Radagast the fool"!

When Saruman belittled Raddy in LotR, let's consider the source; a haughty, imperious, power-hungry, war-mongering git who'd allied himself with the Dark Lord and whose disregard for the natural world would turn around and bite him on the arse. Seriously, could Saruman in AUJ be faulted for thinking of Raddy as a fool if he's portrayed by PJ as the village idiot who trundles around with bird poo on his head while talking like a two-year-old?

My point wasn't so much that he talks to animals (which is fine and in character) as his voice, which makes him sound dim/imbalanced IMO. A better example is his line in Trailer 2, where he sounds really silly.

We've seen relatively little of Radagast,

Just a very few short scenes. I am really looking forward to seeing how his character is fleshed out, so to speak. Gandalf never criticizes Radagast (not that I've read anyway), and describes him in the Hobbit as "my good cousin Radagast", acknowledging him as a fellow Wizard. So I suspect that some dignity and power will be ascribed to Radagast.

Oh for December 14th to come!!

Why couldn't he have both?

Actually, the representation that one would have to be "simple/childish/a crazy hermit in appearance" in order to have closeness with/care about nature is vaguely condescending, IMO.

Additionally, one can't sit there wondering why the Valar sent him over to ME in the first place. Gandy was similarly written as a cranky hermit, complaining about his aches and pains and wondering why the Valar gave him this "old man's body" in early drafts of LotR, (there's probably that old script review kicking around someplace) but was wisely rewritten to more closely approximate the Angelic Immortal Spirit that he is.

Yes, but the preception that Raddy was (or appeared to be) "simple"

was a result of Saruman's twisted, corrupted viewpoint after his allegiance with Sauron, not because it was so.

Gandy's not demeaning Raddy doesn't really tell us anything about the Brown Wizard, it simply tells us about Gandy.

Should Theoden have had poop on his head and spoken in a childish voice in LotR simply because Saruman yelled at him that he was dotard? Tongue

Despite PJ's many talents as a filmmaker and my great appreciation for his LotR films, I have to agree with those who've stated subtlety is often not one of his strong points. There are other times however, particularly in quite exchanges of dialogue, where he can craft greatly subtle moments...I was hoping Raddy would be more an enigma and less comedic relief.

You're right, he could have both...

And we haven't seen enough of him to know everything yet. about how he will be portrayed.

Theoden was a dotard,

until Gandalf released him from Sarumans/Grima's influence.

I do get your point that most of what we've seen of Radagast is comedic, except perhaps when he is caring for the sick hedghog. That's why I (the eternal optimist) am looking forward to other characterizations of Radagast, more than the few seconds that have been shown.

I also like when you mentioned "Gandy's not demeaning Raddy doesn't really tell us anything about the Brown Wizard, it simply tells us about Gandy." Gandalf hesitates to outrightly criticize Saruman until he is imprisoned and escapes, although he had personal doubts.

You know, appearances can be misleading.

A foolish-seeming exterior does not necessarily mean a foolish mind. All the wizards have their eccentricities (Gandalf's is pipeweed and hobbits, Saruman's is "metal and wheels"). Radagast's eccentricities show more on the surface and Saruman may have made a judgment that would seem accurate on first glance, but I expect we'll be shown something more than mere eccentricity in Radagast.

It's near the end.

At 12:42, as Dave opens the door into Theatre Two, you hear a booming voice say "Well, look who it is!" Then it cuts to a shot of a surly Thorin looking up. We're assuming that the voice is that of the Great Goblin during the scene when the dwarves are first brought before him.

I love the poo

My kids really got it that Raddy loved his birds so much that he refused to take the nest off his head until they were safe and grown. Until then, the poo would have to wait.

It also makes it quite clear that what Raddy cares about and what the rest of us care about are on completely different levels. We don't like poo in our hair. Raddy has more important things to worry about. Smile

I'm sorry but you can love birds

and even have them in your hair but not have their lunch running down your face.

Its just a bad bad design choice which adds nothing to the character and actually takes away from him.

Other than that though, i think he looks great, its just a shame they seem to go too far sometimes.

Even if he is a little eccentric?

To be honest, the poo doesn't bother me. I still see Doctor Who under the make up, rather than Radagast. That's more frustrating for me.

But does the poo match his eccentricities? Possibly. Think of all those crazy dog and cat people in real life, with god knows what smeared on their clothes.Crazy

Or perhaps the poo is some weird plot detail - it might deflect goblin arrows, it's that crusty!

Yep, even with being eccentric

Its just stupid, lol.

For me it kinda encapsulates the worst of what PJ and co do with the films - i know it may sound like im blowing it out of proportion but thats just because i feel they get so much right, that when its wrong it sticks out.

I mean who thinks it genuinely looks good? It just doesnt, most have to just put up with it.

Like i said, i hope the rain comes and washes it away or they just film from his other side. For me it really takes away from the overall look of the character and potentially reduces him as i am just sat there thinking, why didnt he wipe his face? It is just really not needed.

i honestly hate it. Do i hate it more than the axe - hmm tough choice there, lol.

PJ if you can hear me, digitally remove it from every single scene and i will love you forever! Tongue

The poo

It doesn't bother me either. Do I think it might be a little much? Sure but its not something I'm finding an issue to look past. I've not seen but 1 episode of Dr. Who so that isn't an issue for me. Which sounds like may be a good thing.

In the end I want to see how the character plays out since really he's very bit part in the world of Middle-earth.

It has been partially translated and the question about weapons is currently near the end. Scroll down to #3 and click on "partial translation". The whole thing is very insightful.

I think the rest of Radagasts design is very good, wizard like but distinctive enough from gandalf and saruman.

As for the vlog although they are all excellent, i think this one could be the best yet (though i said that for vlog 8 as well, haha).

Some great shots, but in a way I feel I may have seen to much. Dwarf combat looks very intricate, almost mechanincal in the way they coperate with one another, IMO I feel this goes well with thier love of craft and weapons.

I'm so glad you said that...

...and so glad it was included in the video blog, because the orchestra should not be taken for granted!

They have trained for many years to be able to walk in, sit down, and sight-read perfectly - first time, every time - whatever changes come in, cuts are made, etc. It takes tremendous concentration and skill to do that stuff.

I heard a radio interview with Howard Shore where he said he was very familiar with the London Philharmonic before working with them on LOTR, and in fact he wrote that music specifically for THOSE players. That's a little like writing a line or a role for a specific actor - you can hear them saying it, you know how it will sound.

And in the video blog, the score playing behind the Music portion was subly building, slowly preparing us, and then - Trombones! I loved that part...Smile

Glamdring and Orcrist don't glow, am I right?

Well, Glamdring I'm pretty sure, but even Orcrist. Someone said it glowed, so I was pretty concerned. Looking carefully, it just seems a reflection of blue light; there's a frame with half the blade with light and half without, that means light doesn't come from the sword.
Only Sting needs to glow, and it does indeed... I guess when they fix the "bad" CGI in LOTR, they will add some blue light on it...

Richard Armitage's interview says Orcrist glows (but not blue).

The interview of Richard Armitage in L'Ecran Fantastique says that Orcrist does glow. Here's my translation from the French:

RA: Thorin is rather old-school when it comes to fighting! He carries an axe at first; later, having found the elf-sword Orcrist in the trolls' cave, a magical blade that glows when evil creatures are near, it becomes his principal weapon for the rest of the film. Thorin, being a prince destined to be a king, has been trained in swordsmanship since an early age. He fights so well that at one point in the film he clears a pathway through a crowd of orcs, cutting them down to clear a way across the battlefield! In the Appendices to The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien relates how Thorin, then 53 years old (still a young age for a Dwarf) led his army of Dwarf warriors in the Battle of Azanulbizar. When his shield was destroyed, he took up an oak log in its place, hence his nickname "Thorin Oakenshield". Afterward Thorin kept the piece of oak carved into a shield, as a symbol of loyalty and honor.

So he did say it glows, but not blue as some have assumed.

Don't mess with my favorite female elf.

RA is amazing

The fact that he got the pronunciation right for the battle of Azanulbizar (or at least presumably does so based the correct spelling of it in the interview) just adds more to his clout as a Tolkien geek!

I can't say I've always been blown away by what I've seen of his Thorin in the trailers and spots (although this is rapidly changing) but the way he so fully immersed himself in the role is fantastic.

I was thinking about this a while ago but from a slightly different angle

A couple of the quotes we already have from AUJ seem to be highlighting the different viewpoints which Gandalf and Saruman have on the world. This seems to be a thread which can be seen in LOTR - that Saruman is characterised by seeing a very great deal (not least via the palantir) but somehow failing to see the truth with the clarity that Gandalf does. "Saruman of many colours" is a great example of their differing perceptions.

I wonder if Radagast is a further example of this. It hadn't occurred to me before but we essentially only see Radagast through two lenses - that of Gandalf and that of Saruman (Beorn's comments being very brief). I think my assumption as a reader had been to see the "truth" of Gandalf's views and dismiss Saruman's comments as calumny.

But all that is gold does not glitter, and Gandalf as we know sees the gold, and does not care for the glitter. And we the readers may see Radagast more warmly through Gandalf's eyes, rather than focus on the surface that Saruman's more superficial gaze would dwell upon. As such a brown wizard who looks foul, but feels fair, might act as a very interesting thematic fulcrum between the other wizards.

And, of course, Saruman failing to understand the value of the natural is a much broader theme for the films..

*swoon* omg... the last one....

This is surreal... I'm so thrilled to see such a vast mass of Jackson's filmic family and what they've gone through... but I'm sad to know that this is the end of this phase of discovery. The "first time" to see so much. Peter looks exhausted. To be done with everything just 2 days before the premier THIS WEEK is incredible! *tearing* I love seeing all the people behind the scenes. I was so stirred to see John Howe and Alan Lee. Christian River. Andrew Lesnie.. all those people who have been there from the beginning...

They've given so much. Moving to 3 films in July had to absolutely freak out so many of them... but they just keep going. We're so lucky to have such dedication. I want to give each and every one of those people a hug and a heart-felt thank you.

I like Raddy's design, including the poo...

If you have ever seen a bird's nest in the wild, you will see that lil birds always poop out of their nests at the same spot and that they do it every few minutes.
IIRC during the timeframe of LOTR and the Hobbit, the Istari have been in Middleearth a long time, the blue wizards got lost in the south or east and Raddy withdrew from the dealings with the various folks and cared more about the wildlife.

It's bird pee, not bird poo

Most of what people call "bird poo" is actually just "bird pee". Simple urea, mostly. That seems to be what Radagast has on his beard.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. I like it, actually. Radagast probably doesn't care much about his appearance and is more in touch with the lives of animals. He wouldn't be the sort to take care of his appearance since the animals probably wouldn't care and he doesn't care for anyone but animals. I guess some people here are personally disgusted by his appearance, but as a bird lover myself, bird pee isn't the sort of thing that grosses me out.

Overall, Radagast looks great. Some of the concept art for him in the art book looked pretty bad, but the final version appears to capture him perfectly.

Really? I don't see The Doctor in Radagast at all

I grew up with Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor and I actually have a lot of trouble recognizing him in the Radagast costume. On the other hand, I barely recognize him in the recent inverviews I've seen either. His speaking voice and current appearance seem a long, long way from the Doctor I remember.

On the other hand, I haven't watched a Seventh Doctor episode in a long, long time. But back in the day, he was definitely my second favorite of the original seven doctors, behind only the great Tom Baker.

Rather than recognising his voice or anything. It's a strange one. Doctor Who filled the Tolkien shaped hole in my life, until the Hobbit got underway properly. I love the classic episodes, so I just associate McCoy, with Doctor Who.

It is also worth noting, Lacrimae, that Saruman had a tendency to demean without entirely dismissing.

Openly he scorned Gandalf's use of the halfling's weed. . . privately he sought after it and used it regularly himself. He may have scorned Radagast as a bird tamer, but he also wasted no time in using birds for his own purposes. There was ever a touch of hypocrisy, and recognition of at least some of the usefulness even of things which he scorned, to Saruman.
