Speculations on the "Barrels Out of Bond" scene + McKellen's frustration. (Possible SPOILERS)
Over the last months there have rumours a plenty that Tauriel, played by Evangeline Lilly, would play a part in the dwarves’ escape from the Elven realm in Mirkwood. Another thirteen months will have to pass until we find out whether these rumours have been based on reality or were merely invented out of thin air. Having said that, I find it interesting that Tauriel does not appear in the Lego set “79004 Barrell Escape” which features Bilbo, Oin, Gloin and two Elven characters named “Mirkwood Elf Chief” and “Mirkwood Elf Guard”.

If you click the second link, a little comic will pop up which includes the following lines:

“The Mirkwood Elves have locked the Dwarves in the Elvenking’s palace dungeon! With the help of his magic ring, Bilbo Baggins is invisible to the guards. So he steals their dungeon key to free the Dwarves!”
Tauriel appears in another Lego set called “79001 Escape from Mirkwood Spiders” which also features Legolas, Fili and Kili.

Does this mean Bilbo will be solely responsible for the dwarves’ escape, just like in the book?

In other news: Sir Ian McKellen's tears of frustration

--- The 73-year-old actor became distressed filming the Sir Peter Jackson-directed movie, and mistakenly told the crew he did not become an actor to pretend pictures on sticks were dwarves.
He said: ''I had a miserable day. In order to shoot the dwarves and a large Gandalf, we couldn't be in the same set.
''All I had for company was 13 photographs of the dwarves on top of stands with little lights - whoever's talking flashes up. Pretending you're with 13 other people when you're on your own, it stretches your technical ability to the absolute limits.

''And I cried, actually. I cried. Then I said out loud, 'This is not why I became an actor'. Unfortunately the microphone was on and the whole studio heard.''
However, he was pleased to find everything had been made pleasant for him on his next day of filming.
He said: ''The next day I went into my little tent and it had all been decorated beautifully. Remnants of Rivendell, carpets and cushions, fresh fruit and flowers, things that were hanging. It was lovely.''---

Was just about to post an NME article about Mckellen's frustration, however it missed out the part about his tent being decorated which was nice of the staff.

Not to sure that we can count on Tauriel's exclusion from the lego set to concrete proof since for the most part they've been making most characters' exclusive to certain sets. However the comic suggests otherwise and this character bio mentions the chief's drunken incompetence:

At least from that round of interviews.
It's pretty common for a bunch of interviews to happen at about the same time, most of which cover the same topics and get very similar answers from the actors, and then we get a spate of very similar articles. Press junkets involve a lot of repetition. I remember hearing the LOTR cast talking about a day in which they did nearly 20 identical interviews, one right after the other all day long. It's got to be one of the least exciting aspects of the job. Tongue

As I've said elsewhere
I think Bilbo will get his hero moment earlier, saving Thorin from a Warg in AUJ, so it doesn't matter that Legolas and Tauriel play a significant role in the spider rescue.

I'm sure the barrel escape will be 100% down to Bilbo (with perhaps less dependence on luck than in the book).

I suspect the Legolas-Thanduil bust-up will happen in between, so he isn't around for the Barrel escape.

Otherwise, he has no arc and then the story is pretty pointless. They wouldn't make a mistake like that.

It seems that Bilbo is the one who frees them, however the Spider scene has me a bit worried.

There are a number of reasons
For giving Bilbo a chance to get his first heroic kill earlier in the trilogy than the spiders, which makes that episode a less significant part of his arc.
A Far Dragon is the best kind...

Tauriel does not help the Dwarves...
...escape; that was always just a rumor. She will only be indirectly involved in "Barrels Out Of Bond", as we know she delivers the line "The cells are empty!" (see my post over on Fan Art for an illustration). Anyway, let Tauriel herself tell you:

"They're coming back!"
As it has been said by others, these words by one of the dwarves in Vlog 4 are promising. It happens while the dwarves are covered with webs as they run away in Mirkwood. So if "they" are the spiders, it appears that it will play out like this:

1. Bilbo kills a spider.
2. Bilbo rescues the dwarves from the spiders as in the book and they escape.
3. The spiders come back and overpower both Bilbo and the dwarves.
4. The elves come in to save the day.
5. The elves capture the dwarves.
6. Bilbo finishes the job and frees the dwarves once and for all.

But "they" could also mean the elves, so nothing's certain here.

Why couldn't the dwarf actors be there?
Was there some reason the dwarf actors couldn't at least be out of shot on the set to deliver their lines, so Ian wasn't alone on the set and feeding his lines to blinking light bulbs? I'd find that really frustrating, too...

Wouldn't have worked out.
Basically they have two cameras in the exact same spot doing the exact same movements on two different sets (one big for Bilbo and the dwarves and one small for Gandalf) and can shoot both Ian McKellen and the dwarves at the same time.

As in what they're shooting is overlapping so it looks like Gandalf is very tall.
