48 fps Theater List

I just found this list of theatres confirmed to "be HFR 3D ready *and* to be showing The Hobbit in the HFR 3D (48 fps 3D) format."
What surprised me that the author states "as of now WB is not releasing The Hobbit in 48 fps 2D, only 48 fps 3D." I thought 48fps 2D was another option?

Come on UK! 4?!

We can do better than that, surely. And they're all equally distant away from me. Can't we have one in the centre of the country?

I thought so, as well.

I had sent my local Cinemark theater a query into "2D 48 fps as one option" on the 7th, and I received a reply just recently.

The Corporate Office verified with Warner Brothers and their answer was that in the U.S there will not be High Frame Rate release in the 2D format. The HFR will only be shown in 3D.

Unfortunate, to me. 2D 48 fps was going to be my first viewing of choice. I'll be going with drab old 24 fps 2D instead. :( Really sorry PJ, but I won't be splurging extra on five 3D adult tickets on something that honestly speaking I would HOPE to like, but don't know for certain. Maybe I'll have a chance with TDoS.

Very poor for the UK!

I am seriously disappointed with this. I would have to travel two and a half hours for the nearest screening. I'm not die-hard enough for that. After so much talk, hype and curiosity of the 48 fps format this can't be seen as anything other than damning. I always try to view a film in the best possible presentation, with respect for the director's preferred way to view. When the Dark Knight Rises came out, I was able to travel some way to see it in IMAX format, as director Christopher Nolan intended.

The real insult here is that my local cinema (the only cinema in town) seems to have pulled the plug on screening the 2D version of the film. So now, I may not be able to experience the wizardry of the 48 fps experience, nor see The Hobbit in the fashion in which I viewed The Lord of the Rings. Instead, I must make do with an inferior product with poorly rendered phantom projectile nonsense.

Bah, humbug!

please not that there s no garantuee that every cinema is included in that list. I could be that some cinemas make a spontaneous decision just before the release to screen it in HFR.

Atmos is even newer than HFR 3D...

I doubt there will be many theaters that will have upgraded in time.

PJ has achieved his goal

I seem to recall discussions way back when, after PJ first announced using 48fps. There was lots of talk about "...will there be many theaters that can afford or have time to upgrade..." and at the time, it really felt like it would be slim pickings.

Now, I know not everyone has a HFR option close to them, but still - as I looked at that list today, it was far LARGER than I would have expected from several months ago. And it seems to grow bigger every day.

Asked my local cinema about this

Only one in Norway have upgraded so far, but it's more of a beta version. My local cinema won't upgrade until March/April next year.

Would really have liked to try this out with The Hobbit, but oh well.

It doesn't seem to have been successful worldwide

Still plenty of places that need the upgrade. Has he been successful? No, I don't think he had. Not yet anyway.

The alternative

It may not have been completely successful ... yet ... but if it were not for the Hobbit, would any theaters be upgrading right now? ...or as quickly as they are?

No, at least places are picking it up

But I wouldn't say PJ has achieved his goal.

When it comes to TABA, I expect a full roll out of the technology.

A slight update about the UK and HFR Cinemas

Cineworld told me it will present The Hobbit in HFR at 25 of its 76 cinemas, once projectors have been upgraded with new boards that decrypt the movie file in the projector rather than on a server.

Odeon says it'll present HFR in "selected cinemas" but has yet to confirm further details. Fancy cinemas Everyman and Picture House told me they're not screening the film in HFR, while Vue is still making up its mind.

Keeping my fingers crossed that my Cineworld is 1 of the 25!

Though I'm doubtful the Cineworld I've booked at will be one of the 25 lucky ones, one can but hope...
