I would love to have seen Burne-Jones illustrate LotR - I can imangine his Elves looking like the maidens in the "Grail Tapestries," for example... Of course, The Hobbit was perfectly illustrated by Tolkien himself, whose own style was very much of the period Rackham was painting...in particular one can see influences of Kay Nielsen in Tolkien's pen and ink drawings.
