Cat or dog?

Are you a cat-person or do you rather prefer the company of dogs, or neither of them?

Very much a dog person

I grew up with dogs, from a toddler all the way to adulthood. Now I live away from home ... I have a cat. Tongue

I'd love a dog, but cats can entertain themselves. They don't need regular walks, they come and go as they please. We wanted a pet, so a cat was the best option. We're both at work for long hours (believe it or not!) and it would be unfair to have a dog.

So really, I'm probably considered both a cat and dog person.

Coming from a horsey background I'm just used to pets you can do something with and that you can expect to do your bidding (to some extend Wink) Cats just don't fit into that picture. They're just... well... there. As far as I'm concerned I might just as well keep a goldfish

Good point, Daniel

Something I love with cats is that they're so independent, they can look after themselves very well whereas a dog you constantly have to babysit because the dog needs you 24/7.

I am a cat person, but I like dogs as well, just not as much as cats. Cats doesn't require so much time spent on them - apart from dogs.

Cats don't much like me. Except for the cat I bought for my kids who ignored them completely and only wanted to sit on me. (and she at all their foam toys and threw them up in little piles all over the floor). I've had cats deliberately pee on me. I've had cats jump up on my dresser, look at me, and knock things off it. (just like this one Then I got allergic to cats and now they are like toxic substances. I get wheezy just being in a house with cats but if I get dander in my eye, the eyeball reacts very badly and it's so painful and debilitating I just go to bed with a wet washcloth on my eyes and hope for sleep.

Now dogs. I quite enjoy the right sort of dog. Not small and yappy. Not too big. I definitely would avoid those that are bred for more aggressive purposes: German shepherds, pit bulls, dobermans, and rottweilers, for example.

During my childhood I had a mutt, a Chihuahua (not the sort of dog I would think I'd enjoy but it was had a delightful personality), and a Pomeranian Spitz (not that great of a personality, unfortunately).

My young adult dog was border collie that I was very bonded to and died unexpectedly from cancer. It was so devastating to me that I have resisted getting another dog. But I dearly loved my friend's dog who was part lab and part greyhound. If I were to get another dog, I'd seriously consider a greyhound.

But having kids in the house... and now grown kids.. and living in the city.. I don't desire a dog much. I enjoy them when I visit households where they live, however.

Never have been though I am the mother of an animal lover... heck of an animal magnet... If there was a stray or homeless animal anywhere near my daughter it ended up in my backyard.

We've had horses, a donkey, cats, dogs, gerbils, hamsters, mice, parakeets, goldfish. We are now down to two cats (both of whom are over 12 years old) and two dogs. One of whom my brother left on my hands when he went through a divorce five years ago and the other one my daughter put a bow on and presented to her father when it proved to be one too many for her husband to take (especially given that its got a hyper personality and needs lots of space which they don't have)

Ugh neither

I cannot stand pets. I've had both a cat and a dog growing up, but I will never have a pet of my own. They're too much work - too dependent. I don't like having to be tied down to feeding and walking and letting them go to the bathroom. Ugh.

The only animals I truly love are horses. I'm pretty obsessed with them, but I don't have one and probably never will. I'd like to, but again, they're too much work to have my own.

I grew up with dogs...

and still absolutely love dogs. I haven't owned one in years though. My wife is a cat person, so when we moved in together, she had two cats. The younger of the two would have tolerated a dog because she played with the neighbours dogs, but the older one would have croaked on the spot. Since moving in, we somehow acquired two more cats. So I have become a cat person I suppose as well. The oldest cat has just passed away recently, so once the wounds heal a bit we may look at a dog. We'll see. I like animals in general, I grew up with pet rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, turtles....

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

Sneeze, itch, scratch.

Cats and dogs are a thing of the past for me due to severe allergies to both. I used to have a cat and Mrs. D had dogs.

I'm with you on the horses. In my childhood and beyond, every summer we spent a week at a ranch, learning various aspects of grooming, riding and care. I love the smell of horses. I always make my way to the horse barn at the county fair each summer to feed/pet the foal.

Cats usually go to the one who doesn't look at them.

Staring is a dominant action, so if the cat walks into the room, and all the cat lovers look over at him, he's going to go over to the person not looking at him.

I like cats well enough, but I don't want them jumping up on my lap and getting hair everywhere, so I make sure I stare hard at one who has that look. You know, when they stare for a few seconds at a spot they wish to sit on. I always say they're counting the angels in that spot to see if there is room for them also. Cats are spooky that way: they can see angels. TongueLaugh

Now there's a dog lover! Smile

I like dogs better than cats, but I like them both. When I was growing up, the only animal we actively sought out for a pet were dogs. The cats we had just showed up and decided free food was better than getting it on your own.

When I was a vet tech, I always preferred dog patients, though. Dogs always seemed so grateful that you were helping them to get well. There were a couple of cats I had as patients who, I swear, died just to spite me. They were cats who started out not that sick, but refused to eat, or refused to let me handle them without a fight, and I felt should have made a full recovery. But no. Despite everyone's best efforts, they died on purpose. Unimpressed

Here's our cat, Daisy, if I can do attachments correctly.

Oh, we got to see several expensive vet visits: medicating the older horses, stitching the wild ones that tried to jump the barbed wire fence, hoof trimming and for those lucky ones - new shoes! One year, my horse had colic - but they didn't know it until I was out on the trail and the horse started to lie down while I was riding her. It took a while to get her back in.

It really was a great time though. After they had cooled off and groomed, I got to take them back out. If we were early enough before the AM ride, we got to go out and round them up. A feed bucket worked well on most occasions, then just slip the bridle right on. Smile

We have always had both

as a child and as an adult. But they are like people in that some of them have great personalities and some do not. I have become greatly attached to some of them and not to others. And we live on rural acreage so it has been a good place for them. But when we have to move which we will eventually, we maybe will have a cat but probably not a dog. I think cats can adjust to an urban lifestyle much more readily than a dog.

Cat or Dog

It would be easier to choose both of them and get away with it but I'll make a choice. I am more Cat than Dog. Not than I do not like dog, far from that we had had two when I was a child and I liked very much the second in particular. I guess cat mean something just more special to me, it was the first animal I owned. Cats are simple but yet interesting and funny.

Dog all the way!

I am half shocked by the poll and have not at all. I think there are more women than men here and i have found generally women either prefer cats or are at least open to having them as pets, where as i dont know one man in real life who prefers cats.

Cant wait for all the guys liking cats and women preferring dogs comments, lol. its not a rule just a general comment from life where i am from.

My dislike of cats started probably from before i could even say cat as my mum has a real dislike/phobia of them as when she was younger one cat randomly jumped up and attacked her, since then she has never felt comfortable around them.

I dont feel scared around cats but i just find them kinda pointless, lol. To me they dont show much love at all and basically do as they please. I also dont like the fact that even the nicest cat can randomly scratch you.

To me a dog is a true member of the family and shows loyalty and love to all members - they aim to please and will protect you when needed. I have had a few dogs in my life and each one has been great. I love how you can train a dog and exercise with them, play with them. They are basically just more intelligent and so to me more interesting. Cats to me seem more primal and wild at heart.

But ultimately i am probably just brainwashed from my mum and positive experiences from dogs and some positive and negative from cats.

They are basically just more intelligent

This section I definately disagree with. Dogs are indeed loyal and obedient - some dogs are almost slaves to their masters. To call them more intellegent than cats is a bit of a leap though, IMO. The cat is independent, the cat can attend to himself and look after his needs and does not require babysitting 24/7 which a dog does. Dogs couldn't survive long without human intervention. They can't climb trees, they can't catch mice, rats, fish, or birds. Cats does all that, and more. My biggest complaints about dogs - they just require so much time every day, which isn't the case for a cat. I've come to realize this now as I am currently taking care of a friend's dog for five weeks now. Lovely dog, but I almost feel all my spare time at days is spent on the dog.

Note that this isn't a hate-on-dog post, I just wanted to speak out why I like cats so much, more than dogs.

A dog is more intelligent

The fact a cat can look after itself does not mean it is intelligent. A fly can look after itself, is it intelligent? There have been studies done to show dogs are smarter than cats, so its ok to think otherwise but scientific studies show that dogs on average are more intelligent.

I think the reason you like cats though and dislike dogs is the reason i like dogs and dislike cats, haha. I knew you wouldnt fail me in going against my general consensus though, lol.

I think that depends on the particular dog breed and even the particular animal

Poodles and herding dogs are very, very smart, indeed. But some of the more "decorative only" breeds are dumb as logs. A friend had a dog who could not find her own water dish if it was moved three feet. My cat was very easily trained in what was allowed & what was not allowed (no scratching inside, no getting on tables, and if you bring that furry squeaking thing inside, it will be taken away). I think cats are in general more willful, meaning they may know perfectly well what you want and just choose not to do it!

This reminds me of something a ranger at Yellowstone told us when showing us the rather complicated garbage cans there, where you had to turn a lever and then push something else to open them: "We've found there's considerable overlap between the dumbest human and the smartest bear."

The way we imagine our lives is the way we are going to go on living our lives.

I can totally believe this!

In Reply To
"We've found there's considerable overlap between the dumbest human and the smartest bear."

As a general reply to dogs and cats, i didnt mean to suggest (if anyone thought this) that cats are dumb, they clearly have some level of intelligence and i agree they have their own agenda. Its just when comparing the average cat to the average dog, the dog is more intelligent.

It has done this through a very similar method that modern humans have - by becoming more sociable. Being sociable and picking up on human body language so they can please their human requires a larger brain.

Cats havent gone through this process as much, as they are more solitary and so they dont get these accidental benefits of being sociable. I am sure there is some super smart cat though, where the cat be used as a cat for the blind instead of a dog.

One thing i have noticed when cats and dogs are together is, bigger dogs tend to leave cats alone where as the smaller dogs (roughly the size of the cat) seem to have a go at it more often. I dont know if others have the same experiences with their pets? Perhaps its just a matter of training the larger dogs better as they could easily injure the cat, where as a small dog is probably going to come off worse against a cat and its sharp retractable claws, lol.

The level of intelligence shown by animals (i will admit even cats :P) is far greater than people previously thought. I can remember watching a tv show about this female gorilla that could use sign language and when she watched her favourite film and the sad part came on she cried! It also had a dog that worked out what a word was, from having it said to them once - border collie naturally, so practically a human, lol.

It definitely varies

I think my cat is very intelligent and very sociable. He collects eggs, fetches his favourite toy, and will come for a cuddle from anyone. But then every animal is very different. My brother's cat is very different.

And I agree about dog sizes. My parents Golden Retrievers are fine with my cat. He hates them though. I suspect because he only "meets" them rarely. But I always find smaller dogs to be more pesky than larger ones.

Too yappy for their own good.Wink

Yeah i forgot to talk about individual variance

something which Annael brought up and is definitely true. You wont have two cats that are alike, just as two golden retrievers are completely alike. A lot of this is the personality of the animal but also socialisation of the animal. Any dog can be loving and caring if you socialise them to be just some dogs personality traits (defined by breed) are for a more loving (needy) dog.

Smaller dogs are usually more yappy as usually they are a terrier or were bread to be watchdogs as apposed to a guard dog.

Something interesting about goldens which i dont know if you ever experienced with your golden is they have whats called a soft mouth, so they can carry eggs long distances in their mouths without cracking them (as can other retrieving breeds).

I know what you mean about smaller dogs being more pesky though, always got to keep an eye on them to make sure they are not getting into mischief, lol.

I guess ultimately i feel like i am sharing my home and have an extra family member to a greater extent with a dog than a cat. After all dogs are man's best friend but i understand that not everyone has the time to dedicate to a dog - essentially a 2 year old baby and a cat can be a good option in those cases or if someone finds cats more interesting as the cat is slightly more wild?

One thing i have read is dog owners in the USA are more likely to have a degree than a cat owner. However the opposite is true in the UK with cat owners more likely to have the degree (potentially more intelligent?)
If you have a cat and a dog then you are covered wherever you go, lol.

This would make for an hilarious read! Wink

I was going to make a comment on the stereotypical person in the UK who owns a certain type of dog, and how they probably got to the above conclusion. But I won't since TORn readers come from all backgrounds. I bet you get what I mean though.

My only personal pet cat had a degree

Her name was Dr. Snuggles... called her Miss Snuggles once and she was all, "That's Doctor Snuggles. I didn't spend 9 years at cat college to be called 'Miss'" (of course all I heard was "meow, meow" etc.).

Made me think of

Mister Jingles - the mouse from The Green Mile.

Tell your cat - good work from me, but 9 years! Hope she didn't train to be a physician! (now im thinking of cats going meow, meow dressed up as surgeons doing surgery, haha!) Obviously the consultant would be a dog Tongue

Oh she was a surgeon of sorts

her little claws sliced through me and everything else quite handily, and with remarkable precision.

Could she place sutures (stitches)?

If not im afraid she was just a butcher :P

If she could then can i have a chat with her as my suturing skills are pretty poor, its like i have limited wrist mobility so she may be able to give pointers - what with having no thumb it must be tough!

Naw she was on the post mortem side

preferring cadavers and such. I slept with one eye open the entire time she was in residence. Laugh

(So you are training to be a doctor? How wonderful! I bet you have a great bedside manner.)

Not quite

I am training to be a dentist or as some say failed doctor, lol.

I like to think i have good relationships/chair side manner - but you cant please everyone just try your best. I have found i have a fairly decent memory for remembering little facts about people which always helps in making them feel more special.

Personally i like to try and make things at least a tiny bit fun as im not so sure in US but over in the UK there are loads and loads of people who have genuine phobias about going to see the dentist.

I think its mainly from school dentists from years ago - they all seem to have been sadists and scarred people for life. I really like working with phobic patients and getting them to a point where they are no longer phobic.

I have actually worked with cadavers like your cat :P It was the first dead person i had ever seen - first week of uni, was a shock! I will remember the smell forever.

Is your cat is now professor of anatomists at meow university? lol.

Also if you dont mind - (thread is going off track anyway, lol,) what is your career?

Thank you for asking

My background is in cultural studies generally (hence my fascination with this fandom), with concentrations in drama, media/film production, visual arts and critical theory. By trade I am a certified (or certifiable, haven't decided yet) teacher, though currently I am unemployed. I feel called to ministry in social justice and lately I've been exploring prison ministry. My dream remains working behind the cameras in the film industry, on the conceptual or development side of the process. Being an assistant to a director would be a nice fit as well.

Yeah I'm pretty much all over the map... Laugh
