Move up gramma and dernwyn! Room for one more!

And with this post I ascend into immortality! Muahaha! Laugh

So what added perks does posting 10000 times get me then? The password to the secret “immortal board” where all the cool people hang out? Part of the forum named after myself (DanielLB's Nonsense Board has a ring to it)? A special throne to sit on and zap NfB posts when they go astray? No? None of them? Hey, I’ll settle for free premiere tickets for all three Hobbit films. I’ll send you my address admins. (It’s worth a shot, isn’t it?!) Tongue

Having now posted 10000 times, I can only imagine what some of you are thinking at the moment ... And I dread to think how many people roll their eyes when they check their e-mails in the morning to see:

DanielLB has replied to your post in the ....

*DELETE!*

But really, I’d like to thank every single one of you. When I first joined TORn, I hardly ever posted – lurking in the shadows and occasionally popping my head out. The more time I spent on here, the more I realised what a special community this place is. Everyone should be proud of this place. Every single user, from the mods and admins, to the regulars, to the not so regulars, and to the people that have only just joined this week - you all make this place such a great place to “hang out”. Some people might wonder why I’m on here every day, and the simple reason is because I enjoy it. I enjoy it because of all you guys. It’s all of your views, opinions and speculation that keep me coming back everyday ... well ... and the spoilers of course. It sure is exciting speculating with everyone about the upcoming films, and of course, talking to you all about the one person we love, Tolkien. Hugs and handshakes to everyone. You’re all great, and thanks for getting me to immortality! Smile

So, I’d like to raise a glass of miruvor to TORn *cheers and claps*. I’d also like to raise a glass to all the volunteers across the site, especially the admins and mods of the forum *claps and cheers*. And obviously, I would like to raise a glass to myself, for reaching immortality *woop woop*!

Now that I have your attention, I’d like to make a very special announcement....

I’m leaving the forum.

Those that are cheering, you can stop now please. Tongue

DanielLB was actually a disguise. I am, in fact, Peter Jackson, and this has all been an experiment. I have been posting on here to get all your views and opinions ..... Nah ... I’m only joking! Did I fool anyone though?

I will be leaving the forums, but not quite yet, and only for a month or so! The reason ... I’m off to South Georgia!

“Where?!” I hear you ask. No, I’m not going to that state in America, nor the country in the Middle East. I’m going to the remote and isolated island of South Georgia.

As some of you already know, I’m currently studying for my PhD at the British Antarctic Survey in the UK. My research is looking at airflow over the island of South Georgia, and how increasing wind speeds in the Southern Ocean are leading to dramatic climate change on the island. Some of you may know South Georgia as the place where the Falkland’s War begun (in 1982), or from the BBC programme Frozen Planet.

---Boring bit----

As a very brief background of my research, wind speeds in the Southern Hemisphere (which blow around the Antarctic continent) have increased within the last 50 years or so. These increased wind speeds can then develop strong föhn winds, causing the island to warm. This has huge implications since the island is so ecologically important. It’s incredibly rich in life, and is one of the most biologically important islands in the entire Southern Hemisphere. This is because it plays a vital role in supporting vast colonies of both marine and terrestrial animals. Understanding the causes of regional climate change on the island is, therefore, of utmost importance. And I really hope my research can make a difference, and tell us something about regional scale climate change.

---End of boring bit---

That is a very, very, very brief summary of what I do, and why I am doing it (there’s a lot more to it, honest!) I’m super excited about my upcoming trip, so I just had to share. I’ll be going to South Georgia for a month or so in January 2013. And this is what I’ll be waking up to every morning:

Penguins!
Stunning scenery
Snow and glaciers
More stunning scenery
Seals and penguins
Icebergs

I’ll will be keeping everyone up to date (if anyone’s interested, that is). There will a big push to get a lot of public attention, so we will be setting up a Twitter account (etc.) so you can watch us release weather balloons, fly UAVs, take observations, etc. on the island. I’ll be uploading plenty of pictures when I’m back, and I’m sure I’ll have plenty of stories to tell.

So yes, exciting times! Sorry for the self-indulgent post, but I thought immortality and my upcmong trip deserved a joint celebration!

Anyway, this thread was only supposed to be short (I'll be impressed if anyone has read to the bottom Wink)!

*Hands out free glasses of miruvor and honey-cake!* Let's celebrate!

How amazing to be going to South Georgia! Your research is very interesting to me, and it's certainly important.

Here's to you and the wonderfulness of yourself! This is GREAT!

I'm SO IMPRESSED with your research and plans for some serious study! I admit I don't like the cold, but S. Georgia looks incredible! So magnificent! Beautiful! A whole month in January... *shiver* but what an incredible adventure.

The winds have changed here in the US, too. El Niño and La Niña have been affecting our weather and crops for years now. So I'm sure your study will really have an impact on the global interest and not just that area.

How wonderful! Thank you so much... and good luck... and WELCOME TO THE CLUB! :D

I've read all the books about Shackleton's trip to Antarctica and the subsequent heroic trip across the spine of South Georgia. I also have a fascination with journeys in cold, inhospitable places. So I envy you!

Had to laugh when you said you were shy about posting at first. Reminds me of a college friend who once said that he was really shy in high school, but had finally come out of his shell. Thank you Arandiel :-)

And thank you for the link - a large portion of that is the justification for my research. The first link is interesting. I didn't listen to the interview, but I read the article, but it doesn't say whether they are a scientist or not? One interesting thing they didn't mention is that warming over the Antarctic continent benefits ice growth, as warm air can hold more water vapour, thus, theoretically, increasing snow in the interior of the continent. On the exterior (the bits next to the ocean), changing ocean and atmospheric circulations are reducing sea ice. They vaguely touch on that point, but don't say it explicitly.

It doesn't happen in the Arctic since climate change pushes temperatures above freezing point, thus reducing snow fall.

Geek mode off. Tongue

It wasn't my idea about Twitter - so I'm not entirely sure how it's going to work out. I don't think they realise how limited it is. Unimpressed There's probably enough bandwidth to upload something on to Twitter/Facebook (etc.) if everyone else isn't on the internet. Seems a little optimistic, doesn't it?

well, one thing to consider

is that you can compose blog entries off line and then post them at another time. But it depends on what limitations there are. If it's bandwidth, it all comes down to how long it takes to transfer anything.

How long does it take to ship things out (I feel silly saying that) and/or how often does it take? You could compose and ship out entries on a thumb drive and have someone else post it. That way you could also transfer photos. Make it more like a personal diary/log. You might have 10 entries before any get posted.

You should do it for yourself even if it doesn't ever go online. When Starling was posting about her experiences with the earthquake, I suggested she keep all those posts on her harddrive for herself. She'll want them someday. And just writing about events helps you process them in distinct ways. I think that's one thing about relationships online. We write about so much and it's almost a form of a personal diary entry, sometimes.

Congratulations, Daniel!

On your immortal status, and also on going to such a fascinating place. I'll look forward to hearing about your adventures.

I'd love to visit one (or more) of New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands one day, but I'm a very poor sailor on any but the gentlest of seas, so I don't see it happening.

You are full of wisdom Magpie

And it certainly sounds like a good idea. Even if I can't regularly post on a blog while I'm out there, they would still make for interesting reads afterwards. It's also more reliable than social networks.

The ship (that leaves from the UK) will take a couple of months to get to and from Antarctica. I have things leaving on ship this month, which will get there just before I arrive in January. As I'm only there for a short amount of time (there are some going for 18 months!), there wouldn't be anyone to pass anything on to.

A bit early for trimming the verge don't you think?

9 days early in fact. The prediction I made 2 months ago was what, October 19th? Then all those pesky posters started coming out.... Laugh

Congratulations and thanks for the Mathom. In light of your early arrival, and your pending south seas adventure, we'll have to rework the prediction for catching Gramma. Though I have a feeling she's gonna bring it once the film hits theatres. Cool

I hope I get some great data (and results)

Not many studies have been conducted on South Georgia, yet the island is warming at an alarming rate. I hope I can do my research justice.

Thank you weaver. Smile

My prediction was 1 day off!

I didn't fix it ... honestly Wink Had it not been for the new trailer and all those new posters, I think you would have been spot on!

I think gramma will zooooooom once the films are on. I'll be eating her dust!

I wonder how I'll last without TORn for a month?! Shocked

Thanks SirDennisC Smile

Happy and sad and excited all at once

Happy that you reached this milestone and so very happy that you did so with such a kind-hearted and humorous attitude towards all. I've been a bit tip-toe-y and cautious, coming back to the boards after being away for so long, but thank you for being so welcoming to me :-).

And now I'm sad that you will be leaving for a while (dang, just when I was getting to know you a bit!) but SO EXCITED that you are off on such an interesting and incredible adventure!!! Promise us that the day you head off, you take a moment to trot out the door like Bilbo and yell "I'm going on an adventurrrreeee!!" ok?!

And send pictures!!*

*and cake, we like cake :).

Congrats!

I'm going on an adventure!

I will definitely be shouting that ... perhaps with some shoes on though, and a pocket handkerchief in my pocket. Wink

Thank you for your kind words Loresilme! It's only for a very short time, and I'll be back on the boards before anyone realises I'm gone. Cool

Depends on where it is coming from...

if it's a rich uncle, I'd say sure. If it's the uni, maybe not. But you could charge it up as mental health money.Cool
