Unfortunately the image is oversized.

Feel free to resize it to the guidelines below and post it within this thread again.

I'm just going to say...

that I was at Michael's last week (a US craft/hobby store) and they had little feather covered / styrofoam owls for sale. I have one of their crows I got at Halloween time years ago and it sits on my floor lamp and looks out the window at all the free birds.

But anyone with a Michael's (or similar) store near them that is looking for an owl for a Radagast costume might want to take a look. These are seasonal/Halloween items and won't be around long.

I think that hat looks pretty Minnesotan, too.

This poster is marvelous. It looks like Radagast is kind of blurring into the tree, or becoming invisible. I wonder whether that is a clue as to how he will play out in the film.

Like the owl and the glowing staff head...

but the bird poop in Raddy's hair all the time is really starting to grate on me. Really, an Istari who goes around with droppings stuck to his head? Unsure

I wonder why they felt they needed ANOTHER "comedic relief" character, when they already had a number of Dwarves and a "funnier" Bilbo?

I'm really glad that Radagast is very different from Gandalf and Saruman. I think it still stays true to the essence of the character but gives us something new and fresh so that we don't have to feel like we're seeing the same thing again.

I honestly think he could potentially be one of the "break-out" characters of the trilogy. It seems like he will be portrayed as kind of an aloof wizard that might perhaps even be a bit (dare I say)... ditsy, but I think he will show his badarse side and have some pretty cool attacks and dialogue that will leave people shocked and pleased at the contrast. All of that coupled with his love for animals could create a very endearing character. At least that's just my opinion.

You can see the culprit too

There's a bird sitting on a fungus on the tree, just below (and left) of Radagast's left arm. Most likely culprit?

I hope the owl they've used in the films is real (and even butterflies for that matter).

I think someone can be one with nature

And not walk around with poop in their hair. Animals in nature are constantly grooming themselves.

I'm not very fond of Radagast, he seems like a Middle-Earth parody of Radagast from the book. Just because Saruman thought he was a fool doesn't mean he needs to be portrayed as one, and I highly doubt Tolkien ever intended him to be a comedy routine with poop in his hair, riding around on a bunny sled giving medical attention to obvious CGI hedgehogs.

Here's hoping I am wrong, but so far this film is drowning in comic relief.

I think it will actually happen

Especially since his left arm looks to be half-branch half-flesh. This would explain why birds live on him.

Edit: Maybe this will be his fate at the end of the series--he'll decide he's had enough of this Isatri stuff and turn into a tree permanently. The ents/huorns provide precedent.

not entirely just you

When I looked last night, I could not see it. I got little icon that indicates an image that can't be displayed.

But, I monkey with stuff. I thought perhaps I could find the issue and offer a suggestion on how to fix it.

So... I right clicked on the icon and told it to open the image in a new tab. When I did that, the image showed up for me. Once I viewed it at that url, it then showed up in the post because it was cached on my harddrive.

I knew that whatever issue was at play wasn't due to a mistake in the code or anything, I could now see it, and so I just moved on with things.

I suggest that anyone who can't see the image try the same thing I did.

edit to add: I can see the image in the post but clicking through does not work. I think last night, I was using the link in the first post to find the larger version.

Whatever causes glitches like that is beyond my understanding. It's not the first time it's happened. The reason that narflet could see it is because it was also in their cache. That also happens. It looks fine to the poster because their computer is displaying a cached image. So they don't know that it's wonky for other people.

well, one could wash regularly and still have bird poop on them if they were around birds all the time

I'll have to wait till I see it on the big screen before I decide. Although I wouldn't have thought to do something like that, I can appreciate the creative realism of the attempt. When I created my May Day hat covered with (artificial) leaves, flowers, twigs, acorns, and grape vine tendrils, and little creatures... I created a slime trail for my snail. I loved that slime trail.

On the other hand, dog drool, snot, and people foaming at the mouth with toothpaste make me gag. So if the bird poop is too gloppy or runny, I will not appreciate the realism. If it's just dried, I don't think it will bother me.

In a way, it depicts a person who isn't freaked by the animal nature of his animals. If we have any animal, we have to deal with their bodily excrement. And if we would insist a bird not poop on us, then we would have to deny them the ability to perch on us. Many of us would. Some might but then get freaky about cleaning up immediately.

Radagast is at one with the animals. They aren't freaked by their poop and neither is he. lol

chalk it up to my hobbies

the May Day hat was just one manifestation of my interest in creating realistic, natural, and (at times) fantasy tableaus. I was always adding little odd touches to things like spider webbing and little insects crawling around, etc.

I never thought of poop, though. As someone else said, that seems kind of PJ-ish.

(and how often do we all get to say poop over and over again with abandon like a 2nd grader!)

That's just the way it is. If you actually have a lot of dealings with birds, you are going to be covered in bird poop quickly enough. Zoo employees and such people have the luxury of showers, but Radagast lives on the edges of Mirkwood, far from any major source of water. He's just learned to cope. Anyway, he's meant to be portrayed as a guy who has as little to do with people as possible, and has little interest in social niceties like proper hygiene.

I think he may have gone round the bend

I agree with all this, and I think it kind of points to him having gone round the bend, as they say, sort of loosing his connection with the world of men and elves and dwarves. He's turning away from all that fighting and turmoil and towards nature; sort of reminds me of the huorns in Fanghorn.

Still pretty disgusting and unnecessary, plus it really doesn't add anything to the character IMO other than the gross factor //

The gross factor...

is so PJ.

It's something I'd rather he'd left out too, but I can live with it. Crazy

Perhaps it serves as an important plot detail?

Perhaps it's so crusty and hard that it deflects a Ringwraith sword, shattering it into tiny pieces?

The counter part to a Morgul blade huh?

Crazy

Still think its terrible and tacky. And surely not a way to treat one of the Istari. I mean I'll live with it there's no choice but whether I think its good or not is another story.

Honestly, I really don't see what the problem is, or how there's even any kind of gross factor to begin with. It's only a small visual element that I would have probably entirely missed if poop-obsessed people wouldn't have kept pointing it out. I also don't see how it's inappropriate for one of the Istari. Did you fail to notice the numerous times Gandalf was described as a dirty beggar by people who aren't so fond of him?

It's just something that emphasizes Radagast's disinterest in social affairs, as well as his connection to birds; you can't prevent even the tamest bird from pooping all over you, which is why actual parrot owners rarely allow them to perch on their shoulders. Why such a big deal is made out of this miniscule visual element, I have no idea.

It's less offensive than Bifur's axe.

And less irritating than Denethor's film characterisation. It's a tiny detail, that will be swamped by other things we all dislike. Wink

Oh it hasn't replaced Bifur's axe

I still think that's awful as well... just adding it to the list Tongue

Personally, I mind Bifur's axe much less

PJ's take on Dwarves has been really goofy since TTT (of which I'm not a fan, but that's another issue)...while Radagast is an immortal Angelic spirit...with yuck on his head! Tongue

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!
