Not only is the Necromancer older and more bitter, and has more power in his veins, than Voldemort does, but the Nazgul would have the Death Eaters for breakfast. 'David Yates kills magic more throughly' etc...hmm, I'm still not sure If I liked his films or not, he got better performances and set peices out of the actors and material (I preffered his directorial style over the rather anemic first two films), but he made alot of cuts and changes as well (Half blood prince should have been called A fifth of the Half Blood prince)-though not all were his fault (Order of the Phnoeix's rough cut was over 170 minutes long, the studio pushed him to slice out around a hour), and I've always felt the last three potter books weren't quite as good as the others anyway. Even so as a fan of the books growing up they were a bit dissapointing (Alfonso Cuaron should have done more). Elenorflower Gondor Oct 9 2012, 10:27pm Views: 1954 I actually like the first three HP films the best I think the first two are seriously underrated. Columbus got perfect casting and the films were brimming with magical atmosphere, the music always gives me goosebumps. Yates films IMO took all the magic and discarded it for a gritty urban edge. Some people like this dark feel, but I find Yates uses visual darkness as a cheap shorthand for narrative darkness. The story gets grimmer so he decides to make the film so gloomy and murky you cant actually see whats going on in the 3D version. But its the magic killing that really makes me irritated. i really wish Cuaron had done the last 3 films. He would have made them visually enchanting and dangerous, and certainly not dull.

Arandiel Grey Havens Oct 11 2012, 3:52pm Views: 1913 I agree with you on Yates & Cuaron Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite of the HP movies, for many of the reasons you cite, and I doubt it would have been so successful in capturing the right mood without Columbus' work on the first two films. The only thing I would add is that the last five movies just cry out for the music John Williams would have written for them; he had the soundtracks on such an amazing trajectory, and it was derailed by the changes in composers. Oh, and the Necromancer would win against Voldemort: immortal being vs one desperately trying to be so, the mistakes are bound to be worse for the perverse human. There.
