Ever had one of those 'I never noticed that' moments?
Last night my friend and I watched Fellowship of the Ring for the first time in ages. I have never counted how many times I have watched the films, and I really wish I had, because it's lots!
Anyway, I had a moment when Frodo placed the ring on the table during the Council of Elrond. It was the first time I really took in his reaction after he put that ring down. He looked so relieved, feeling that this huge burden had been lifted (before everything went haywire). I couldn't believe I hadn't ever really *seen* this before. I guess I've always been busy taking in everything else that is going on in this scene.

The other thing I kept noticing was the beautiful detailing on Bilbo's red waistcoat.

I am so happy that I can enjoy repeat viewings over *gasp* ten years, and still find something fresh each time. Smile

Does anyone have their own 'I never noticed that' moment to share?

Yes, lots!
But I can't remember them all. Blush I haven't noticed Frodo's expression at the Council of Elrond. But a recent example is that I never noticed the orcs talking to eachother as the trolls are opening the gate, which was mentioned in another thread.

And after years of multiple viewing, we can still spot something new. One of my most recent "I never noticed that" moments was while watching ROTK. At the Battle of the Black Gate, behind Aragorn, there's a man with an eyepatch on!

And just think, this will happen all over again once The Hobbit is released! Cool

I know what you mean...
Few days ago, i noticed that the pupils of the eyes of Gollum changes depending on his personality.
There are larger when he is Smeagol and smaller when he is Gollum...
You can also notice this in the new trailer of the Hobbit...

I watched RotK recently, and I noticed Frodo at Aragorn's coronation
Has a distant and discontented look on his face. It doesn't quite fit with the happy occasion, but it does fit with his character's ending and the toll that the journey has taken on him.

I was struck this time by how much I liked Frodo in Rotk besides the rather unfortunate incident at Cirith Ungol.

The BluRays really had an impact on me...
It was not so much the stuff I was seeing, but the stuff I was hearing! All the hobbit chatter at the party....the clink of the armor in a lot of scenes..the breathing of the characters when they are running or under stress...I could go on and on.

I haven't had a chance to do this for a while, but I used to watch the films and focus just on one character each time -- Aragorn, Frodo, Sam, etc. -- I found that when I did that I would see so many subtle things in terms of expression or movement or reaction that I never picked up when I was trying to take in the story as a whole.

And now you have me wanting to watch the films again! Thanks for the inspiration! Smile

Focusing on one character is something I will definitely try.
I'm sure I miss a lot when I am watching any scenes featuring horses, because I am so busy just focusing on them. Smile

Just noticed that when Gandalf introduces Shadowfax as the "Lord of All Horses"
Gimli gives a deep, reverential bow in the background. I felt it gave a bit more depth to Gimli for some strange reason.
My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

He seemed about as comfortable putting the Ring on the table as I would be putting my smartphone on railroad tracks. He continues to stare at it throughout the council, he's pained when Gimli tries to destroy it, and he immediately volunteers to take the Ring because he wants to have it again.

The Ring had him by then. He thought he would get relief from getting the Ring to Rivendell, and then to Mordor, but both times he couldn't go through the act of leaving/destroying it.

I agree with you to a certain extent
What I interpreted as relief is very short lived. I think he realises pretty quickly that his role is nowhere near over.
I wouldn't say he volunteers to take the ring because he wants to have it again though.

I liked that moment too...
but I also would have liked it if the other horses present in those scene would bow to their lord. It would have added depth to them (and other Middle Earth animals) too, that they are not 'just' animals, but are more sentient too.

Hard to tell what a person's motives are when they are under the Ring's influence. Things aren't always what they seem. Did Frodo volunteer out of a desire to do good, on the surface, when deep down he really kind of wanted the Ring back? I think that question is raised even with Sam when he asks to help Frodo with the Ring. Was he really, really just wanting to help Frodo or was the Ring working on him on some level too?

And P.S., I liked your 'putting my smartphone on the railroad tracks' comparison, lol. Very descriptive Smile.

I found two new things (for me)
in FOTR: Gandalf is dancing in the background at Bilbo's birthday.
and in TTT: Wormtongue cries slightly when he see's the Uruk-Hai army of Saruman. That's interesting!

Some of my favourite "I never noticed that" moments..
1. Aeglos in Rivendell
2. The Ring of Barahir (did not notice until extended edition of TTT)
3. The detail on most of the weapons and armour (only seen in close ups and on replicas)
4. Narya on Gandalf's hand at the Grey Havens (I may be excused, haven't watched that scene very much, it always upsets me...)
5. Madril among the extras in the background of the Boromir and Faramir scene
6. The pipe inside Gandalf's staff (the first staff in FOTR)
7. The resemblance of the Bilbo's father to Peter Jackson (the picture on the mantlepiece in Bag End)

Distress signal
I tend to have it on a lot in the background without always paying attention *shame* and then I'll suddenly notice some little point of significance that I never seem to notice when I'm actually watching in earnest. Tonight The Two Towers was on and when the flag of Rohan flutters down, it lands unfurled with the running horse upside down, which is a universal distress signal. I don't know if it was intentional, but it really fits. ( I checked the lists and I don't think this is in there.)

Since we got the blueray version and a larger screen I also notice a lot of details and textures that I never saw before. For instance, I never noticed the detail in how Sam's cookware was put together, and a lot of the costuming details like the embroidery on Gandalf the White's robe. I notice new stuff every time I watch. I had always thought that blue ray was sort of like the emperor's new clothes ("I'll believe it if you'll believe it."), but now I'm a true believer.

Can't remember the exact place in the film
In the Aragorn/Arwen/Boromir scene in the chamber I believe. Like you I hadn't seen it until someone pointed it out to me on a previous thread that I made about Gil-galad.

Gollum's Reaction to....
when Frodo tells Gollum "I've got to destroy it smeagol, for both our sakes" they cut to Gollum and he has this horrified look on his face which then turns to anger and it was at that moment I realized that Gollum did not know that Frodo intended to destroy the Ring I can't believe I never realized it before I guess I'm slow

You can see it better there than when Gilly is wielding it in the prologue!
Kind-of weird that it's just propped up carelessly against the wall, however. Maybe Boromir was playing around with it and slaying imaginary Orcs earlier?

I just realized
that Frodo and Sam planned all along to spring on Gollum when he attacked. In the previous scene, Frodo says "We're not alone." Since that was during the day and Gollum came at night, I missed the continuity. Only a few days ago watching TTT again did I notice that Frodo and Sam reacted at precisely the same time. I always thought that as Gollum closed in, his voice was loud enough to wake them up.
