Major Hobbit premiere announcement due

According to TVNZ:

Quote
A major announcement about the world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due this morning.

Among other things, I'm guessing the running length will be confirmed.

Confirmation of the talking purse?!

Laugh

I imagine it will be times, length, list of attendees (?), and then perhaps the boring bits - road closures (?) etc. I don't know how this stuff works! Exciting!

I'm guessing it's an announcement from Wellington City Council

about the premier event in the city rather than about the film.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Thanks Ataahua, its pretty obvious from the news item.

I posted a headsup to this last week.
It will be long awaited details of what Wellington City Council are spending NZ$1 million+ on to celebrate the premiere.

Announcement due at 10.30am.....

according to TV3 News.
"The Wellington City Council will this morning announce details of the premiere of Sir Peter Jackon's first Hobbit movie, to be held in the capital next month.
The council has set aside over $1 million for the premiere on November 28, an amount it says is justified given the popularity of the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King premiere in 2003.
Representatives from the council, Warner Brothers and Wingnut Films are set to reveal details of the premiere at 10:30am."

a pretty red carpet. Wink

It was on the radio news at 11.00

They just talked about loads of red carpet, a 'countdown' clock, and Wellington being renamed 'Middle of Middle-Earth' or something like that. And they said 'lots' of stars would be there.
That's all I can remember, because I wasn't really paying attention.

I wonder how comparable it is to the Olympics in London?

I knew many, many, many people that really weren't looking forward to the Olympics - having to change travel plans, busier commutes, more traffic etc etc. Not one of them had the same view afterwards ... I think everyone was amazed by the success and atmosphere during the games.

Now, I'm not saying that the Olympics and The Hobbit are comparable, but wonder if attitude towards each is the same (or at least similar)? They probably cause just as much disruption to locals.

Will people in Wellington with a negative (or neutral) opinion be "won" over? Will the benefits outweigh the negatives?

I'd love to be there, personally.

Excellent.

The outdoor screenings are a great idea. I did wonder if they'd dress the exterior of the Embassy theatre with a large Hobbit-related statue, like they did with the LOTR films (with a troll, then Gollum reaching for the ring, then a fell beast) but there's no mention of that this time around.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

The red carpet is so long that ...

It reenacts the events of AUJ, and there is enough at the end to make the outline of Smaug. Wink

didn't they have a camera focused on the theater for ROTK, too?

I remember checking in on it every once in awhile.

I imagine it will be similar,

but of course on a much smaller scale. I think there will be people who aren't particularly interested in it, who will perhaps be won over, and will find themselves caught up in the excitement. There will also be people who aren't really interested in The Hobbit, but see benefits for Wellington, and like the idea of a big event.
There will always, of course, be 'disgruntled of Wellington' who will write a grouchy letter to the newspaper.
And there will be lots of screaming hordes, who just want to get on the telly!
And then, of course, the *real* fans. Laugh

I think there are going to be some pretty significant and lengthy road closures, so that will naturally impact on a lot of people.
I have no idea whether it will benefit Wellington or not.

Actually, they really should have the event here in Christchurch. We have loads of space, and tons of parking - just pick an empty site. Our central city red zone is already the right colour. Laugh

There is a webcam overlooking Courtenay Place.

http://3cix.nzix.net/...ts/webcam/courtenay/
It shows the entrance of The Embassy but not the countdown clock.
I can't get the streaming video.
Perhaps there will be an improvement for the premiere but I suspect the site will crash from total overload.

Two more bits of information:

There might be a special 'Middle-earth' Customs stamp for those entering NZ at Wellington Airport during November (cool!), and the exterior of The Embassy Theatre *will* have a special something from Weta along the lines of the large Gollum etc that dressed the building for each of the LOTR premiers. What it will be, though, is hugh-hush. Maybe the Goblin King? (I'll bet it's a Mirkwood spider for film two...)
