Which returning character from LotR

... Are you looking forward to seeing in The Hobbit?

'What are we holding on to, Sam?'
'There's good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for!'

'I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!'

Albus Dumbledore!

Seriously though, I would struggle to watch most of The Hobbit if it wasn't for the Gandalf that I know and love returning (i.e. Ian McKellen). He was the high point of FOTR and much of ROTK, and I'm hoping that he will be just as memorable in The Hobbit films (he is after all playing the more interesting of the two Gandalfs).

"Radagast is, of course, a worthy wizard, a master of shapes and changes of hue, and he has much lore of herbs and beasts, and birds are especially his friends."-Gandalf, The Lord of the Rings.

Ian McKellen is Gandalf...

... In this world, anyway. But yes, he portrayed Gandalf perfectly in LotR, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing him in The Hobbit. Tom Bobmadil is an interesting idea, but unfortunately I doubt that he will be in The Hobbit... Still, you never know. That would be great Smile

The Two Ian's...

...Because they are great actors, plus Sir Christopher Lee as Saruman (one of my fave actors) and Michael Elroy as Cirdan (you never know...).

It would also be nice to see Barliman Butterbur's grandfather (not a returning character but still a similar character) played by the same person from FOTR serving the dwarves if they cross through Bree.

A cameo from Aragorn (i.e. 30 seconds) I wouldn't mind as long as he dosen't have anything to do with the plot.

‘As they came to the gates Cirdan the Shipwright came forth to greet them. Very tall he was, and his beard was long, and we was grey and old, save that his eyes were keen as stars; and he looked at them and bowed, and said ‘All is now ready.’

Agreed

The Aragorn cameo isn't a bad idea, and I agree that he shouldn't have anything to do with the plot.
I'm looking forward to see which Bagginses will play a part in the film. (Sackville-Bagginses, Older Bilbo, Frodo, Drogo and Primula...)

Hob Gammidge and the Old Took. I'm looking forward to seeing how they fit in. Although, they're not Baggins', or in the trilogy. Wink

Figwit!....

Evil

Actually, Saruman...after being cut from ROTK, it would be great to see him back again.... and I'm glad to see the elves again (although I'm not too crazy about Evangeline Lilly being in it... somehow I get the feeling she's gonna be all "ninja chick", which will be like "Surfin' Leggy" all over again... Unimpressed ).

Blessed are the cracked,

I think

they could have done more with a frame between old Bilbo (Ian) and Frodo (Elijah) - but I realize that I brought up that idea well past the time for that level of restructuring and extra filming at extensive of a level was possible.
I also realize that this very different structuring could set the movies apart from FOTR in an awkward way - making them as very distinct (however, I would argue that it would fit the unique "narrator voice" element nicely).
This kind of framing could open the door to any possibility ... even Aragorn (Viggo) (who was shown in Rivendell debating bits of writing with Bilbo)

That being said, I am looking forward to seeing a bit of them both and am happy that Gandalf is in it again. I think having the good LOTR elves like Elrond, Galadriel, and Legolas was a good move.

Bilbo

cause I like that guy so much.

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"
