Beorn in the first film?

Looking at this stamp picture, I noticed a couple of things that stood out: http://stamps.nzpost.co.nz/...-Miniature-Sheet.png

1) It's the first time I've seen a pic with Thorin wearing a quiver and arrows. Interesting.
2) He's also wearing Orcrist on his back.
3) the ponies in the background are all pretty uniform-looking
4) further in the background is a forest

All these things led me to the conclusion that this shot is from the eaves of Mirkwood. Judging by the look on Thorin's face, it's from when Gandalf is taking his leave from the company. We know from the book that Beorn provides the dwarves with bows and arrows. Also, he provided them with ponies. I thought that this could be early in the journey, but the fact that he has Orcrist tells me otherwise.

so, does this mean we could POSSIBLY see Beorn in AUJ and they're just keeping it under wraps? Or does it mean that this stamp was in production before the film split? Either way, cool to know that they will at least keep true to the post-Beorn thru Mirkwood part of The Hobbit!

It shows that it is supposed to be near Mirkwood

Yes. But I don't think it suggests Beorn is in the film. It's just a promo shot, I'm afraid.

What if....

This scene definitely takes place between Beorns house and mirkwood.

We all expect the eagle-rescue to be the final scene of AUJ. But what if the final scene is gonna be the entering of mirkwood and the departure of Gandalf?

I just watched TTT yesterday and when I saw the last scene of the movie:

***Frodo, Sam and Gollum enter this forrest near Minas Morgul and the camera pans up through the trees, over the peaks of the dark mountains. Leaving Mount Doom and Barad-Dûr as the last shot of the movie. The goal of their journey in the distance.***

Wasn't it also the same in FOTR? Frodo and Sam are entering Emyn Muil with a last look at Mordor in the distance.

When I saw this scene and remembering the one of FOTR I thought: Wow... wouldn't it be great to see something like that in AUJ? Maybe Lonely Mountain as the last shot of AUJ? The goal of their journey. Perhaps letting the dwarves and Bilbo entering mirkwood. Gandalfs says farewell and rides south. Panning shot through the trees of mirkwood with Lonely Mountain in the distance.

It sounds funny but this stamp gives me hope to see Beorn in AUJ. "Why this stamp? Perhaps because I'm still hoping... and this little thing gives me hope!" ;)

I wish...yet Mikael Persbrandt isn't on the revised AUJ cast list. //

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

there's a shot of thorin with a bow in mirkwood on the official ipad-app too
well, those kind of thing happen - if warner still makes enough money, they laugh about this silly mistake

that gosh darn shot of Merry from ROTK EE

Was in the very first trailer for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And we didn't see it until 2004.

Shots of elves playing in the woods (from the young Arwen & Aragorn scene) was shown in Fellowship trailers and still hasn't seen the light of day.

These things happen, promotional material need not always reflect accurately. Crazy

I'm afraid too because...

I remember a lot of promo shots that didn't appear in LOTR at all (most notably the goblins leaving moria for lothlorien) and also there were pictures for the FOTR promo which didn't appear in FOTR but TTT or ROTK. For example there is this picture of Saruman atop of Orthanc looking down (with a green light). This scene didn't appear in FOTR although it was part of it's PR (e.g. on the soundtrack cover), this scene didn't appear in TTT and although it didn't appear in the theatrical version of ROTK. I always wondered from which scene it was. Finally it appears in the EE of ROTK.

I'm afraid of this stamp of Throin near mirkwood being exactly the same case. I'm still hoping but... :/

I'm afraid all the evidence points to the contrary

Including the removal of the cast member and the word "shapeshifter" being specifically deleted from the official synopsis and the removal of Beorn's image from the scroll.

Thanks so much!

I'm glad someone else understands that all promotional material doesn't mean anything to the final film cut Smile

There were many promo images for LOTR that never ended up in the films, and I'm sure the same will be true of these films.

uhm...

Thanks for the passive-aggressive swipe, but I have no lack of understanding on the way promotional materials work in regards to film. Hopeful speculation is a far cry from naive musings.

If you read the very last couple of sentences of my original post, you'll see that I even acknowledged the fact that these images may have been from before the split into 3 films (back when Beorn would have been in film 1).

No one's being passive aggressive.

I was replying to There&ThereAgain anyway.

it's the inference

I knew who you were replying to. It was the inference that you and There&ThereAgain "understand" these complicated things and those others of us don't "understand" is what rubbed me wrong.

Beorn as a prologue

I feel like the introduction of the dwarves to Beorn and the recounting of their tale from Gandalf is a perfect way to open film 2. Smile

Agreed.

When it was still only two movies, I was worried that they would leave out Gandalf introducing Beorn to the dwarves, and his retelling of their adventures; It would, after all, be somewhat redundant, having two "let's introduce the dwarves"-segments in the same movie, and retellings of fairly recent events.

Having Beorn in the second movie however, not only averts that redundancy somewhat, but also gives an excellent opportunity to deliver some very natural exposition; In addition to being a great way to reintroduce us to the dwarves (probably wise, given that it'll be a year since last we saw them), having Gandalf give Beorn a fairly expansive retelling of their adventures up to this point would be a great way of catching the audience up on what's going up ("last time, on the Hobbit"). Had Beorn been in the first movie, much of what I just described probably wouldn't have made it into the movie.

Yes, not getting Beorn for another year stings a little, but I hope some good can come from it, in the form of scenes that might not have made the cut otherwise.

Beorn is one of the actors

that will come back for aditional shooting before DOS is released. Maybe it's about this particular scene, in fact I really think it is.

Not quite sure if this would work

Freshening up on all the names would be good of course, but retelling the first movie would not be necessary.

I really hope it makes the cut.

I think it's one of the funniest bits of the book, and a pretty good display of Gandalf's wit.

Perhaps not overly lengthy...

...but I think a retelling of certain parts could go a long way. Their adventures in Goblin-town, and what happens afterwards, for example, seeing as that has some importance to the continuing story; Not only for the dwarves, but also for Beorn.

could be like the prologue in fellowship

it was "retold" a few times, but we were given slightly new perspectives and information on similar events.

That way the audience isn't simply being recapped.

DanielLB made a great post maybe a week or two ago about

Movie two has an introduction Scene at Beorn's
where
So similar to BagEnd
Gandalf names each of our Company
To the BigGuy
which re-introduces non-Bookies
who might have forgot? over the full year
between Film Releases
who each one is.

That makes so much sense
It's un-canny.
It doesn't have to come in pairs
like the Book buta... Way interesting concept.
Simple logic
since many in the audience
might not have even seen Movie One.

But the audience might be a little surprised that DOS starts with what happened in a film that they saw one year ago. And for the record, I like the idea!

and when it comes to introduce Dori, Ori and Nori, they will burst through the side of Beorn's house in a stolen DeLorean.

Yup

The removal of publicity materials and toys featuring Beorn strongly suggests Film 1 will end before arrival at his house.

There really are only 3 options for the end point now:

1) In the Air, carried by Eagles
2) At the Eagles' Aerie
3) At the Carrock

No toys but

Beorn has been edited from the scroll, from the cast list and from the official synopsis (where the word shapeshifter has been specifically deleted). It is difficult to think of an explanation for these changes which is not the most straighforward one.
