Happy Friday & weekend Eventides (and to everyone else as well!)

I've had a fairly uneventful week, apart from my work computer dieing on me! Wink My weekend seems to be booked up of driving family around various parts of the country - how come they all decide to do something in the same weekend? I've got the short straw of being the taxi!Shocked

In more exciting news, immortality is nearly upon me! I have a very special and exciting announcement to make when I reach it! Laugh Exciting for me, anyway. Sadly, it doesn't involve The Hobbit, or Tolkien.

What plans do you have have Eventides?

Have a great weekend everyone. Smile

Greetings and felicitations

Okay, that's Star Trek, not LotR, but it reminds me of the dwarves arriving on Bilbo's doorstep.

I'll take a quick shot of miruvor, please, Evey. It's been a rough week---a very dear friend of ours had a stroke last Sunday, and this was just a couple of weeks after his wife (also a dear friend, of course) had to have emergency surgery. She's hanging in there and he's doing amazingly well, considering, but it's still been horribly stressful for them. We're trying to do what we can to help.

We're anticipating a cold, rainy, cloudy front tomorrow which will drop the temperature here in North Texas by 30 degrees or so, from the 80s to the 50s. I just plugged in our electric fire, which hasn't been on since March, so it will be ready to go. It's just mock logs and a light, it doesn't actually throw off heat, but it makes the fireplace look pretty and homey without the mess of a real fire.

We're hoping for a quiet weekend before we get busy next week.

*stuffs tip jar with a shiny orange pumpkin and thanks for our lovely substitute barkeep*

Hi DanielLB!

Ack, not the computer! Glad you were able to get to Fiesta, though. :)

As for me, I don't really have much planned now that Doctor Who is done until Christmas, LOL-- I'll probably work on my website a bit. :)

*gets drink-of-choice* Hope you have a great (even if driving-filled ;D ) weekend!

The series went so quick, didn't it.

I might catch up on some classic Doctor Who in the long wait. I always buy them on DVD but never watch them, so they've been on my list of things to watch for a long time.

Have a great weekend Eventides. Smile

Hiya, Evey!

How's the weather in your area - and the trees? It is becoming sooo colorful here! This time of year is a "feast for the eyes".

I'll have just tea, please, with honey. My co-workers are all sniffling and coughing! Three-day weekend coming up (Columbus Day), so hopefully everyone will get plenty of rest.

Strange to be celebrating a guy for "discovering" a place which the natives already knew was here...

It's been so long since I've made it to a fiesta!

Hooray! I'll have tea please!

I haven't been at the computer during a Friday Fiesta for I can't remember how long.

Looking forward to our Thanksgiving weekend. I like turkey (with all the fixings!) - but I think I love the leftovers best. It will just be the three of us this year, so we've got a very small turkey - but there will be enough for some yummy Turkey sandwiches and some wonderful Turkey-bone soup. Yum!

It's going to be a chilly weekend up here in the great white north - but that's OK. I hope to be able to help Mr. ShyElf with some raking and light yard work.

Cheers!

Howdy Everyone!

My daughter, 2 g'sons and I are driving to Lake Michigan to enjoy a brisk, windy day at Pentwater, Michigan... just over 2 hrs away. I go every October when the tourists are gone, the wind is fast enough to make 3-6 ft waves, the trees are in full colour, and hot chocolate is the drink of the day! Winter coats are a must and a bag for collecting shells, feather and pebbles.

It's soul-refreshing and the place I think about whenever Legolas talks about the sea. :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!! Thanks so much for taking care of us, Evey! I'll just snag a quick hot chocolate to prep me for tomorrow ;)

I used to live by the sea, and miss it greatly now. I'll never forget the evening I went for a walk along the beach knee deep in snow. The snow was right up to the sea, and there wasn't a sole in site. It was very surreal, especially as this was in the UK!

It did go fast!

We got a new fangled PVR just before the series started, so I recorded each episode. Then, the *&(@# cable company did something (still don't know what) and erased all my recordings! Mad

Oh well - we did record the last one (ShyElf The Younger and I both cried!) and I'm sure we'll be able to find the other episodes to watch them again (and again).

But - you know, that's a good idea. Some classic Doctor Who episodes....hmmm, might be just what The Doctor ordered!

I love Pentwater!

We spent many a wonderful vacation at Mears State Park. I drove through Pentwater in early August, had an ice cream cone at the Dari Creme, and shopped at the old Gustafson's. I've also driven through there in the winter, and it's just as beautiful then.

I'm always sad when I drive by the site of the old Nickerso Inn. I hated seeing that come down.

Do you climb Mt. Baldy at the rear of the campground? I'm not sure I can do it anymore.

Have a wonderful weekend!

I woke up to snow this morning :-(

Just a blanket to cover a hobbit's toes, (and mine: I went out in the dark in my bare feet to get the newspaper.) But I hate to see it come. Every year I wish it would just snow in the mountains, and mostly it works that way, but not always.

The mini-ocean!

The Great Lakes always amaze me, they're so large they're like mini-oceans! Laugh You've got an advantage over us on the southern coast of Conn.: because LI Sound is sheltered by Long Island, we rarely get those nice high waves - which are perfect for sending stuff up onto the sand!

What do you usually find - or maybe i should ask for later tomorrow: what all did you find, this time! Cool

It's not at all unusual.

There's almost always snow on or near Halloween (and sometimes roses blooming at Christmastime). We've had snow as early as Labor Day. I just hate to see it come.

we're burning up. Not only are there wildfires on the east side of the Cascades, which is typical, but there's a big one burning about 50 miles south of me. No rain in two months and none in the forecast.

am I in time for Saturday brunch?

Busy week. I spent the weekend putting the finishing touches on my dissertation, all 200 pages of it. As I was working on this, I kept thinking that now I have to find a job. The ideal job for me would be telecommuting and doing editing/writing work, not full-time because I want to turn the dissertation into a book now, plus I'm doing some teaching, and I need class prep time. And then I got an e-mail from someone I used to work for, offering me a contract free-lance editing/writing job, 20-30 hours/week, for 18 months! PERFECT!
I shipped the dissertation off Monday to my committee, and told my landlords that I wouldn't be moving any time soon (I was thinking I might have to leave to find work). Tuesday I was doing chores when a voice in my head said "you need a new dog. NOW." I'd had this thought in my head that my next dog would be a little'un, maybe a Schnauzer or terrier of some type, instead of my usual 80- to 100-pound shepherd or lab (or shepherd/lab mix, which really should be a breed of its own). So I looked up the list at the local shelter, and there she was, a Schnauzer/terrier mix (they said - she looks more like a wirehair Fox terrier to me, crossed with something larger, as she's twice the size of a Fox). I brought her home and within two days she was "my" dog. She never barks, she knows lots of commands, and she's amazingly calm for being only about a year and a half old (and a terrier!). I can walk her offleash because she won't go far from me.
There's a school of thought that all the stuff the world is going through is preparation for a big energetic shift in people. I keep seeing this post on Facebook that lists the signs that the shift is happening to you. One of them is "rapid manifestation" - you think of something, it happens. I'm becoming a believer!

The way we imagine our lives is the way we are going to go on living our lives.

A three-way congratulations!

The dissertation off to its "judges", an unexpected job offer - and a new pup who was just waiting for you to come fetch her! What's her name?

I haven't heard of "rapid manifestation", but I do believe that some things were meant to happen. Maybe it's the same thing...

I'm a small dog convert.

My husband & I had large hunting dogs (a springer spaniel,& two labs) in the past but after our last lab died I got it in my head that I wanted a pug but I also wanted a rescue so I ended up with my puggle, Pippin. My husband used to tease her & say he was going to get a real dog but he loved her. A year after I got her my husband was diagnosed with cancer & died three & a half months later then my daughter & granddaughter moved out so Pippin & I have become very close over the years.

I often dream about things that come true or think about things & then they happen. I've always considered myself slightly psychic or at least very intuitive. I'm also a real good judge of character as soon as I meet someone.

I always considered

my last dog (a German shepherd) was an angel sent to help me through my divorce. And then I got to live with her for another 13 years.

I grew up with labs and shepherds and always thought of myself as a big-dog person. I don't think I could use the words "little dog" without appending "yappy" to them. And I thought that only big dogs were obedient, and I like a well-trained dog. But then a friend got a rescue Boston terrier-pug mix, and to my surprise, she was the best-behaved dog ever. She sat down at doorways and waited to be invited in or out, you could leave cat food ON THE FLOOR and she would not touch it . . . she was perfect. And such a cheerful little personality. I think I grieved as much as her owner did when she finally passed this year at 15. Sparky opened my mind.

So now I've got Chloe, who is also a cheerful little soul, but in the house totally chills out in her dog bed while I'm working. I've only had her six days but have already come to trust her off-leash because she will NOT go more than about 20 feet from me and comes as soon as I call. She appears to be smart as a whip so it's going to be fun to see what tricks I can teach her. And she's a whole lot more portable than my 80-pound shepherd, fersher.

The way we imagine our lives is the way we are going to go on living our lives.

gosh, you're making me tear up from homesickness

The Mister picked up four pumpkins yesterday. He had looked as some at one place and then at another (to check prices). He said both were from the same place - they had the same stickers. They were from Hart Michigan which is where his grandmother lived (and maybe two miles from Pentwater). We are (as many of you know) in Minneapolis and those pumpkins had to either be trucked around the south end of Lake Michigan and through Chicago or floated across the lake on some sort of water transport. We have a perfectly good crop of pumpkins here in MN so I'm not sure why it was somehow better for someone to ship Hart pumpkins here, but it was a nice reminder of home.

I miss the eastern shore of Lake Michigan very much.

So close, yet so far, Gramma! I got home last night from lakeshore Ohio.

Basically Cleveland almost to Toledo, and back again before heading home. We go chasing the birds, but admire the foliage, too. Mom stayed home this year, and Dad and I were glad. We're the colder weather people. ;) I took a wool hat, socks, and gloves...and was perfectly comfortable.

And it may not be, but I'm going to believe that we both took pictures of the same rainbow. =)

Yes - not as often as I would like

I have family that lives further north in Traverse City, but I try to go through those parts at least once a year. My father spent his summers in Grand Haven, south of Pentwater, and we vacationed there and other spots nearby throughout our childhood.

If you do go, your first visit might not get you everywhere, and depending on the time of year, you might want to choose one area over another. As gramma found out, many of the little towns close as soon as the summer is over, but some, like Grand Haven or Saugatuck, stay open all year.

I can get to Grand Haven from Chicago in about 3.5 hours, if that helps. Pentwater is about another hour north of there, and Traverse City is a minimum of 6 hours from Chicago, but that's the boring inland route. It's about 8 hours if you stay close to the lake.

There' are Circle Tours around all the Great Lakes, but I think the Lake Michigan circle tour is the best. You will see all these beautiful beaches, the Upper Peninsula, stop in Milwaukee to see the Tolkien archives, then finish in Chicago. Of course, that's about 600 miles of driving! Cool
