Warner Bros. confirms Hobbit extended edition

Thanks to Ringer Oleander Took for spotting this in the Warner Bros. press release today regarding their 90th anniversary slate of offerings:

"And finally, among the new films you can expect on Blu-ray and DVD in 2013 are The Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas and – officially confirmed here for the first time – Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition (Q4). One suspects a theatrical cut will be released earlier in 2013, following the home video release pattern of the previous Lord of the Rings films. And it’s reasonable to suspect that a Blu-ray 3D version will be forthcoming as well."

Great news for Peter Jackson, Tolkien and movie fans everywhere! Join us in the speculation about which scenes will be in the theatrical release and which we'll have to wait for the extended edition to see. Hobbit Discussion board, Barliman's Chat, facebook, Twitter.  Read More...

A trilogy AND material to spare?

What could possibly be left out of the theatrical films? Either the versions in theaters are going to be cut down to the bare minimum, or the EE's are going to be about 2 minutes longer.

I suppose we'll probably see some of the Dwarf backstory end up on the EE, some of the material not really essential to the narrative such as Galadriel's monologue about the morgul blade? Perhaps some Dwarf bantering, a bit of Goblin-town and/or Riddles?

I don't know, WB really seem to be milking this.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

I was definitely not expecting this! Not after the trilogy turn.

But what does this mean for our theatrical releases? Will they be short (about 2 hours) like we've been fretting and then be extended.

I prefer the EE of the LOTR and will hold for the EE of The Hobbit

as well. I just enjoy the extra material as it usually makes the scenes less abrupt and choppy as is often the case in the edited theatrical releases. Plus, you simply get more of the Middle Earth and characters experience.

I can understand that, but to me it's not that surprising.

One of the things that struck me while watching the "making of" doc's for LOTR was that PJ produces huge volumes of material to work from. I expected him to do the same with The Hobbit.

It's really emphasized that PJ is not one of those guys who makes a script then sticks to it, it's all very dynamic and fluid (much to the chagrin, sometimes, of his support staff) and things get added and moved right up until the last minute.

So, mix large volumes of footage with a constant evolution in script and a propensity to make long movies and - voila! - three movies.

This is why it didn't surprise me in the least there were going to be two movies instead of one.

This is a tiny bit concerning.

With LOTR I believe they looked at what they had left after the movie was released while now they've probably already decided what to leave out for the extended edition Unsure

This is WB after all so it's not surprising that they would cut a piece of the cake before delivering it...

I was all prepared for two films.

I was even an avid supporter of two. I just firmly think that three is stretching the story too much.

And just because PJ shoots more than he needs, and the script is never really set, doesn't mean that a final film of 3 hours is always for the best. Sometimes, short and sweet is better than long and drawn out.

(Not saying I want short Hobbit films, just to clear that up)

That's what I'm thinking

This definitely feels like butchering the theatrical release so that they can double dip on an EE.

The LOTR EEs came about because of a massive story trying to be told in three films of three hours each. There was literally no way to put everything in, and even 10 years later we've still not seen everything they filmed.

For The Hobbit, though, they're already drawing out one simple story into three films. And now they're planning on EEs. The whole situation just seems so backward to me.

It all depends on the films lenght

because if it's three 3h films again, then the EEs make sense because they would have put as much as they could in the theatrical versions, but still have more material to show.

If these EEs are for three 2h films, then it's the same politic than the DLC for video games, and it's shocking IMO

If we are getting 12 hours of film

Like the LOTR trilogy was (or 11.3833 hours to be more precise), then I'm all for this and this is amazing news! :D

But if we have, say, 9 hours of film, that could have been split up into three 3 hour theatrical films (that's a tongue twister), then this becomes simply a money-gainer for WB and makes me disappointed.

Here's to hoping that this trilogy will be as long as LOTR was! Heart Smile

To cut or not to cut

It isn't necessarily a matter of having too much material. If you listen to the LotR commentaries, a relatively small number of the extra scenes were cut due to time. Most were cut because:
  • They were redundant or just didn't add anything
  • They messed up the pacing
  • They didn't fit with the tone of the film
  • They damaged characters
  • They weren't very good

I'd say prime candidates for a AUJ EE would be:
  • Dwarf history (and backstory in general)
  • Bilbo hiding from Gandalf at the market. As in FotR, there will probably be pressure to get out the door and onto the road quickly.
  • Individual riddles

They probably will not cut much action (i.e. trolls and Goblin Town), because they never do. Smile

This means nothing right now

We don't know how long the films are, and how long their EE counterparts are.

If the EE makes it 30-60 min longer, great. If it makes it 5 min longer, it is just an excuse to release another DVD set and make more money. An EE version was all but guaranteed because it makes more money, but we need to see how generous the portion size is.

Comparison with LoTR Extended Editions

Fellowship of the Ring: 3 hours + 30 min = 3.5 hours
The Two Towers: 3 hours + 45 min = 3.75 hours
The Return of the King: 3.33 hours + 1 hour = 4.33 hours

A reasonable expectation for The Hobbit
An Unexpected Journey: 2.5 hours + 15 min = 2.75 hours
The Desolation of Smaug: 2.5 hours + 30 min = 3 hours
There and Back Again: 3 hours + 30 min = 3.5 hours

Don't expect much extra for AUJ unless they make the theatrical too short. The other two however, have the benefit of more filming.

Whilst your numbers are, naturally, plucked from thin air (but seem entirely reasonable Smile), I can't help but agree with your closing assertion. There simply can't be that much more material for AUJ. A movie that was once to last from Bag End to Barrels now lasts from Bag End to Eagles. Jackson will have had to re-insert material he'd intended to leave for the EE in order to bulk up the TE's running time. And even if he hasn't, then a postulated extra 30 mins or so over the original Bag End to Barrels length will now have been truncated to 15-20 mins for the new Bag End to Eagles length.

Way under half an hour longer is my guess for the AUJ EE Frown

EDIT: Oops, forgot to say: Yes, the DOS and TABA EEs, on the other hand, are likely to benefit enormously from the new block of shooting planned for next year.

At this point we have no idea

how long each of the films will be, though I will say I will be disappointed if they are under 2:45 each. Since Jackson himself has claimed he doesn't know how to make short films. Now as far as EE go i wonder if they are going to make shorter theatrical released films to be able to have EE or have they filmed enough to give us the usual lengthy films plus be able to add more. I'm hoping for the later of the two ideas but with Warner Bros involved it will definitely all be about money either way. One of my biggest fears of this whole trilogy announcement is that WB pressured or sweetened the pot for Peter Jackson into cutting the length of his films to accommodate the 3 film idea. one can hope there really is "more story to tell" but it seems like public relations runaround to me. Even with all my concerns about the Hobbit I for one hope for long theatrical releases as well as a fair amount of new footage added into all 3 of the films. we shall have to wait and see.

Great News!

The EEs might not add 30 minutes+ to these films, but even the EE of King Kong which only added I think 12 minutes added quite a bit of great material such as the triceratops attack and the giant fish thing. I would have preferred those two scenes over the brontosaurus stampede that made it into the film.

If the movies are great, the fact that they are shorter than The Lord of the Rings films will be forgiven. If they are not, then the 3 film split will seem like a cash grab.

If the EE of An Unexpected Journey ends up in the 3 hour plus range, then the rough cut of An Unexpected Journey, before the three film split had to be well over 4 hours. And of the two movies, An Unexpected Journey would be expected to be the SHORTER of the two.

Heh

I think all of this applies to 85% of the added scenes in the (LotR) extended editions.

Considering The Hobbit has now somehow been turned into a trilogy, I suspect the additions to the upcoming EEs will be extra-extraneous. Like, Bombur farts galore or something like that. There will be no great scenes added because there is absolutely no excuse this time to leave a great scene out of the theatrical editions. That means nothing like the Faramir-Boromir scenes, or anything as evocative as the passing of the elves in FotR. I really hope they treat the theatrical versions as the definitive versions, because they can certainly afford to do that this time. Any other approach would be gravely cynical.

Shades of Kingdom of Heaven...

I do fear that WB will pull a similar bad move to the studio-mandated theatrical cut of Kingdom of Heaven, which was downright awful compared to the director's cut.

Also, when did the film become "The Unexpected Journey" versus "An Unexpected Journey?"

Is that just a typo in the logo TORN is using?

Dwarf history will certainly be in the theatrical cut

The history they are using is very important for illuminating both the rationale behind the quest, and the personal animosity between the dwarves and goblins. Almost none of this will be axed (pun intended) for the theatrical version, because it sits at the center of the main antagonisms in the film. That is almost guaranteed, IMO.

They might shave some of it off, but no way it all goes.

Kingdom of Heaven was the case because

Studios just hate Ridley Scott Tongue Don't know what it is about the guy. The man just likes to put him down every time he shows them up. The Hobbit is an established brand and PJ as a great amount of control over it, so I doubt they're going to slice out "necessary content" like was done with Kingdom of Heaven (which was R rated, period piece, and a bit high minded in and of itself). What we will see on screen will perhaps be more complete to some eyes than Fellowship was, though your mileage will vary on what "complete" really is. They will undoubtedly break the two hour mark, though I don't know by how much.

They did it for the RoTK EE

Remember the classic anecdote about how they were filming after the movie had already won best picture? That was done solely for the EE.

Besides, remember they're doing pick-ups and a few months of extra filming next year, it's not exactly hard for them to shoot some more sound stage stuff. (Location might be a different story, but considering that even Rivendel is in the studio now, I imagine they have a lot of freedom).

Pretty much at this point, if Peter wants it, he'll get it. And if not, they'll just sneak it into the fine print of the schedules ; )

(Please, let the running times be 2 hrs 25 mins or something....I can live with that!)

Thanks

I just love middle-earth. It means a lot to me and is one of my major stress reliefs to get through rough patches. :)

They should've spent more time on it!

Definitely a scene that should have had even more added on to it. The EE scenes are Crazy

Can anybody confirm this?

What is the source? Everything I've read/seen leads to nowhere.
And as Shelob said, the logo is fake....
Where is the press release?

The original article is here. I can't find any Warner Bros. announcement.

The head of Collider (very legit site) was sent an email by WB saying an extended edition has not been confirmed

https://twitter.com/...s/254361962123780096

We'll probably get one though.

Well that's not surprising.

I was more surprised to find out we were getting one. I would totally not be surprised to find that we're not. Three theatricals is pushing it, I think. How much more could be left for EEs?

I had a feeling that was pre three film news.

Legit but not infallible

I believe it was they who reported that Willem Dafoe would be staring in Guillermo Del Toro's current film... turned out to be just a rumour.

Edit: Also it would seem a little damage control is in order having announced there would be an extended edition before the theatrical release even hits the screen -- talk about "milking it."

If that is the case

Maybe any extra footage planned while only two films were in motion will be used for the third film. It wouldn't surprise me though if extended editions do emerge.

I think there will be extended editions

The pacing for something to be watched at home (with the benefit of a pause button) can be very different to something cut for cinema. PJ knows this, and put together the LotR trilogy with two versions in mind.

A Far Dragon is the best kind...

I imagine PJ is editing both versions at the same time...

Rather than going back and revisiting. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing, or whether it'll effect his decisions in any way. Could mean he'd be more willing to cut certain material, knowing it'll be in the EE's

This seems to be the Warner Bros. statement

Quote
In the recently distributed calendar included in the Warner Bros. 90th Anniversary press kit, there was an erroneous mention of an Extended Edition release for The Hobbit film. This product has not been confirmed yet and we apologize for any confusion.

"This product has not been confirmed yet"

Does including the word "yet" into that statement imply that WB will confirm in the future?

I think this is most likely

There will be an EE, but someone let slip too soon. They won't want to confirm completely until a final cut has been made of AUJ.

I think EEs could be the perfect solution

if the problem is that they still have more good and usable scenes than what some kind of external restriction related to making the movie close to 2 hours because of 3D glasses and eye strain or something of that order.

But with the change in the movie structure, I wouldn't expect there to be as much of this kind of material in AUJ compared to DOS and TABA. But if they release EEs later on then they can have more of the "story of the making of The Hobbit" or more backstage antics on the disc that goes with AUJ - or something like that.

Advertising an EE...

... seems like poor marketing. I know most of us will rush out to see the theatrical version, but those with more patience might want to wait until the whole film is there. (Not that EE is necessarily better than theatrical.)
