**The Hobbit Geeky Observation Lists** call for contributions!!

If you would like to contribute to TORn's official Hobbit Geeky Observation Lists, now is the time to really get going! I've been working on the list since last year laying the foundation and making a few entries in my home files; but I've been waiting until now to ask you all to unleash your observations of what you've seen during the creative and filming process of Peter Jackson's adaptation/storytelling of The Hobbit.

If you're not sure what the Geeky Observation Lists are all about, please follow the link in my footer to see The Lord of the Rings' Geeky Observations Lists and what they entail. Essentially, during the theatrical viewings of LotR, TORn members would split at the seams (as we have for The Hobbit) talking about all they saw and heard. Every little detail was something to share or discuss. The lists are just a place to put all of those treasures.

Please keep your entries to one line if possible, but post as many as you like! These are short little notes and not a discussion of details. Don't worry about posting something someone else may have already offered. I'll sort through and get them all straightened out. I do my best to use your entries as you write them, but I may need to edit them from time-to-time. These are YOUR lists… not mine. I'm just the gatherer :)

From now until…. oh say… 2015, I'll occasionally post a call for observations here where you can feel free to add to the lists. It will really get crazy once each film is released!! *twitch* The Hobbit Discussion Board will be wild by then, so I'll ask that we keep the observations for the lists confined to my request posts… just so I make sure I don't miss anything :) I'll update the google site constantly during those busy times so you can see all the details and observations as the lists evolve.

Ready? So, here goes…

Please share any little details or observations you've made from what we've seen so far in pictures, trailers, or Peter's vlogs as they relate to what could (or will) potentially be in the films. Please specify which film you think it will be in using one of these film titles or numbers.

#1 - An Unexpected Journey
#2 - The Desolation of Smaug
#3 - There and Back Again

Each list will include:

The Main Lists of Geeky Observations, ultimately according to Chapter Title. The chapter titles will first be determined by the content of the film in relation to book chapters (here at the start of making the lists), then by the soundtrack titles for the films (usually released before each movie), then according to the DVD chapter titles (unless we're happy with the way they are :)

Then there are the "There's room for a little more" Geeky Observations Lists. These are a compilation of all the things that are spotted throughout all 3 films, but do not fall under the storyline (or plotline). Some of the LotR entries include:

Multiple duty: Cast work on more than one character
Dialogue translations
Misheard lines
Injuries
Calligraphy
Songs/music
Switched lines: Lines given from one character in the book to a different character in the film
Recurrence / repeats / parallel scenes / phrases / seeing/hearing double in LotR (Words & images repeated in the trilogy)
Homages or Likened to other films
Costumes
Cameos
Written in the Red Book of Westmarch
Inscriptions

and still to come: Weapons, Filming timelines, and Cast and Crew Credits

Thanks lots… and have fun :)

I've been wondering when these would get going!

The only one I have so far concerns Gloin's armor. The armor pattern on his sleeves matches the armor on his son Gimli's helmet.

Wonderful idea gramma :-)

I was aware of your list on your website long before I started contributing to the forum. I'm so glad your doing it for The Hobbit as well.

I can only imagine the amount of work that goes into something like this. Smile

I wouldn't know where to begin. If I wrote down my observations right now, they would be an incoherent mess. I'll have to organise them for you!

And a question in general, would PMing you be ok as well?

Even after this post has dropped off the boards, I'll still be hunting this post down and watching for additions.

from the list I did for the home page article

in this shot:
http://www-images.theonering.org/images/hobbittrailer02/hobbittrailer02-011.jpg

The houses we can see at the bottom of the hill with one red door and one yellow door (or is this just two doors for one house?) is the same one we see at the end of ROTK when Sam comes home to Rosie, Elanor, and little Frodo. We can presume this is the Gamgee's house.

A couple for "Weapons"

Not sure if it will happen in the films, but both Glamdring and Orchrist appear to glow:

Glamdring has a blue glow in the image seen here: http://filmcellsltd.com/...cellstdusfc5909.aspx

Orcrist has a halo effect or white glow as seen here: http://www.tolkiendrim.com/...elle-pour-le-hobbit/

Glamdring did not glow in PJ's LOTR, though many believe it should have.

I'm not sure if this qualifies for the list but it is a geeky observation: way back when Rob Kazinski was still attached the dwarves were training with bokken (Japanese wooden katanas) rather than axes. We here at TORn thought it strange at the time since we expected they would use axes same as Gimli. As it turns out, a few of the dwarves do indeed use swords rather than axes.

hmmm while I'm thinking of it, some of us were expecting Orchrist to be similar to Glamdring (for instance a long sword) because they are thought to be sister blades. However, in spite of its asymetrical design, it seems the film makers envisioned Orchrist and Sting as a set instead.

well, whenever there's been Runes I've tried to transcribe.... but it ends up not being in Cirth at all but in Old English runes....

... which saddens me greatly... I'd rather they use Cirth Erebor.

Do you remember the K I N G D O M thing?: Here

Then there's the runes on these Dwarf dudes: Here

but they're proving impossible too..... though some interesting conclusions from that thread.

More Runic geekery:

Thorin's Key has "Durin's Heir" written on it in Futhark once again (thanks to DJ for that): Here

Oh and the 'Kingdom' runes would most likely indicate 'Kingdom of Erebor', Thus it's probably masonry within the Mountain.
Might be somewhere else though.

Gandlaf leaving Bag End

As Bilbo is running along, trailing his contract, you can see Gandalf in the background, walking down the hill from Bag End (about 47seconds into the second trailer). Their might also be a brief shot of Gandalf arriving, at about 14 seconds into the same trailer, but I am not quite convinced about that instance.

Also, one of the trolls is poking a crude looking sword at Bilbo at about 56 seconds into Trailer 2.

I hope I'm looking at the same version as others in posting the times here. I was looking at the you tube version because it plays better on my machine. I think these scenes are about 7 or 8 seconds later on the official trailer.

It's clear there is a figure moving in those shots, but I may be reaching a little guessing at these being Gandalf. But thanks for the reply; I'm celebrating leveling up. **Another point I need to make...**

In my approach to these lists, I must say that I do not put negative, critical or nitpicky items in the lists. I know that may rub some the wrong way... and I'm sorry about that. But as I say in my explanation in the LotR Geeky Observation site, after all the incredible work and devotion Peter and everyone affiliated with these films have given... I will not criticize what they've achieved. That would be a list for someone else to host. ;)

Thanks :)

One question

Is it just the lighting that makes Gimli's prosthetics look WAY more realistic than Gloin's, or something else?

Plus, what's up with the dwarven "back combs" this time? They look Andrew Dice Clay or Alec Baldwin versions of themselves. Gimli's hair, on the other hand, falls down quite naturally...

Ok, that was two questions.

Ooohhh.... this is *awesome*

I hadn't seen any of these before Gramma, but I think I do remember hearing about them! And after reading the FOTR ones I have to say this is right up my alley! I'll defenitely be printing out your old "geeky" lists! This was a fantastic idea--the kind of thing we on TORN should be justly famous for!

Whilst y'all be combing the vlogs and trailers for accumulated visual geekery, I think I'll wait for the actual films, and I know I will have some muscial-realted geekery to contribute.
And is it still possible to add to LOTR observations? It will take me a while to finish the complete LOTR list, and I know I may have something to contribute there! Links to how to do this please, when I have the time?

Plus--come to think of it--does anyone know if the famous old post (on another site I think) by Acalogon The Black "A Complete List of Changes From The Book To The LOTR FIlms" or something of the sort, listing all the diffs between films and books, can still be found anyhwere, or has it disappeared from Archives forever? Reading this makes me want to savor that again.
(And Mr Shelob might fancy that too!Smile)
it was such a famous post/essay that it was was mentioned in "The Frodo Franchise"...

Some observations:

1) Frodo has a different colour book, compared to the one he reads at the beginning of FOTR
2) This is Martin Freeman, and not Ian Holm
3) You can't see it very well, but the pictures on the wall here are the same as seen in FOTR and ROTK, but newer. They probably didn't keep the originals?
4) Bilbo's parents are above the fireplace, as in the trilogy.

I just noticed Bifur singing Bilbo's song from FOTR

I was watching some production diaries this afternoon and I noticed that two of the dwarves (Bifur and Bofur, I believe) singing snippets from Bilbo's song about the "Merry Old Inn" that Frodo sang on that unfortunate night at the Prancing Pony in Bree (in the book). I'm guessing this song will show up either at the Unexpected Party or perhaps at the inn in Bree, if they happen to stop there.

On a slightly related note, one of the production diaries had a brief shot of Peter Jackson in costume--perhaps as a hobbit, but could it be possible that he will reprise his cameo of the carrot-eating local in the scene in Bree from FOTR.

I'm sorry I can't be specific about which production diary I saw these scenes in; I was watching a collection of the first six PDs that were all together in one video. I believe both of these things were in the very early production diaries.
