The Hobbit through the eyes of a six-year-old

Just had to share this!

So, my older son Eldarion, now six, was refusing to go to sleep the other night (as usual) so after I finished reading to him and his younger brother (I think we'll call him NZ Striderling, who had already fallen asleep), I turned the lights out and told him a story. After explaining a bit about The Hobbit, I told him an abridged version of Chapter 1. I started by reciting the first page nearly verbatim (don't most of us have that memorized?), and ended with Bilbo running out of his house to meet the Dwarves. Well, the story didn't have the desired effect (Eldarion was still wide awake, entranced), but the next day to my surprise, Eldarion begged me to tell him more. So I pulled out Doug Anderson's annotated second edition (it has a fair number of pictures with it) and told him if he really wanted, we'd read the book. I had to explain that it has a number of scary parts but Bilbo always comes out okay (Eldarion is very easily scared -- not too long ago he was frightened to pieces over a My Little Pony video!), and he was satisfied with my reassurance. So, with NZ Striderling snuggled up too, we launched into Chapter Two (he wouldn't let me read Chapter 1, as he was too eager to get on with the story!). Even though it was mid-afternoon and high time for wild hijinks outside, they insisted we immediately read Chapter 3 as well!

Yesterday afternoon, they were both bouncing on the couch saying "Hobbit! Hobbit! Hobbit!" rather like two frogs saying "Ribbit". We finished Chapter 5, Riddles in the Dark, last night. When I read the bit about "and that was the last they ever saw of those good ponies", Eldarion gasped loudly, "Oh NO!!!!" And he was so spooked by Gollum at the end of the riddle game that he desperately tried to tell me we'd read enough for the night and should save the rest for later and shouldn't we get on to reading Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs instead right now please? (Meanwhile, NZ Striderling is completely unworried and just enjoying the story.) They both loved the riddle game -- I tried to get them to guess the answers, and NZ Striderling actually guessed "FISH!" for the "Alive without mail" riddle, and also "DARK!" for the appropriate one. Clever little lad. :-)

We're partway into Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire by tonight, and both of them are eagerly looking forward to meeting Smaug (they've both read ahead a bit, and admired the pictures), whom NZ Striderling at first was calling Faug. (Really!)

I've been looking forward to reading this with them since they were born, so it's really exciting finally to be able to share it with them! Given how easily Eldarion is usually spooked by scary things, I thought I'd have to wait til he was a bit older, so I'm really pleased they're both so eager right now. :-)

Good for you---and for them!

A wonderful story. Thank you!

My eight-year-old grandson just loves the LotR movies and the Rankin/Bass Hobbit and all the Lego toys and such---but as yet we just haven't been able to sit him down and read him the book. Maybe this winter, after he sees the first movie.

The other day the child told my son, his father, that he was a bigger LotR fan than Granny! Shocked Little does he realize....

That's wonderful!

My own little Loresilme simply has no interest in either the books or the films Unsure.

Sounds like you are creating some wonderful family memories. Enjoy!!

Cloudy with a chance of - hobbits!

Now that was a serendipitous moment, when you turned out the lights and started in on The Hobbit!

Amazing, isn't it, how the kids can have such different reactions to things? Let us know how it progresses! Cool

(Great to "see" you, Ro!)

Now all you need is for little Arwen to get old enough to join in and you'll have a family of geekery!

Thanks so much for sharing this, Ro. You must be utterly delighted to have two little Hobbit fans on your hands. :D

Through the eyes of a child

That is wonderful and adorable! Our son was about seven, I guess, when his dad read The Hobbit to him.

SIX!? Already six!? Mercy!

But you have me entranced with your adventure! Off on THE Quest with your boys. Oh cripes, Ro... This is so beautiful and delightful all at once. I'm also sitting here laughing at how YOU have been taken along on this whole new way of visiting the story with these witty, sensitive, imaginative little boys. I'll bet it's been a long time since you've had the chance to read The Hobbit at all... which makes this all the more delicious :D

Thank you for this! PLEASE PLEASE keep up updated on your progress and their reactions. This is awesome!!

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

That's terrific!

I love the thought of two princelings bouncing on the couch, eager for more Hobbit! So great that they're old enough to enjoy the story with you now. Cool

Thanks for sharing!

I tried reading The Hobbit to my daughter when she was a kid but she wasn't interested. Now I'm looking forward to reading it to my granddaughter or her reading it to herself (she's eight but not a great reader). I'm taking her to see The Hobbit movie with me & hope this will get her interested enough to read the book.

Oh, wow!

I think I might have a copy of the Illustrated Hobbit - maybe I'll bring it for my visit in November.

What a wonderful story - I love how entranced they are.

That is so sweet!

They will surely remember the story for years to come Smile

Did you do Gollum's voice in character?

I am not much of an actress, but Tolkien can make you look pretty good!

I read to all of my boys when they were young -- they are way past that now, but we all remember it pretty fondly. LOTR and the Hobbit were some of their favorites; we even tried Bored of the Rings, but I had to edit that a bit!

Enjoy these years, they go fast!

Six?

I loved your story about reading the story, but having trouble with the whole Eldarion being six thing. Well.

My son never did let me read him the Hobbit. Great sadness.

Now?
