Direct quotes from the book

So, I was just re-reading the first chapter of The Hobbit (I honestly haven't read it in years, and don't plan to read it all before the film comes out. I don't want to find myself nitpicking the movie to be exactly like the book). I noticed that even in the trailer, there are many direct quotes from the book. It surprises me that more people (especially purists) aren't very enthused about, or have failed to notice this.

If memory serves me right, most of the dialogue in the original movie trilogy didn’t directly quote the book. Now, I know that there were lines uttered here and there, but it really seemed like most of it was tossed aside to better suit the narrative of a film. It is only a trailer, and I'm sure there will be a ton of dialogue that is not in the book. But realizing that the trailer really had a lot of Tolkiens dialogue in it made me very happySmile.

Obviously this could change, but it gives me hope that a lot of the exchanges between characters will be kept intact in the films. Given that the style in which The Hobbit is written makes it easier to include conversations from the book to the film. Examples:

"I like visitors as much as the next hobbit, but I do like to know them before they come...visiting" (not an EXACT quote, but very similar)

"Quite a merry gathering!"

"I'm looking for someone to share in an adventure"

Anyone else pleased to see these bits in the trailers?

I am. I think it's great; those little details will end up compiling and making the films overall that much better.~

Well...

"I noticed that even in the trailer, there are many direct quotes from the book. It surprises me that more people (especially purists) aren't very enthused about, or have failed to notice this."

The fact that more people have not pointed out quotes from the book in The Hobbit trailers does not surprise me. Book quotes are to be expected. It is that simple. Hard core purists would not care about the movies so why would they point out these quotes.

"...the dialogue in the original movie trilogy didn’t directly quote the book. Now, I know that there were lines uttered here and there, but it really seemed like most of it was tossed aside to better suit the narrative of a film."

If my memory is still with me, I recall many book quotes in the Lord of the Rings movies. Some were shuffeled from one character to another but were there none the less.

you're right

there were quite a few book quotes used in the movie. We used to play a game with them on the other forum. But many were, as you said, put into different scenes or given to different characters than in the book.

And quite a few lines from the book were used in the background singing of the score. But most were translated into a Tolkien language.

PJ stated in the EE production diaries years ago..

Each time they found using Tolkien's own words
was found to be better than what they wrote.

I don't havethe patience to cross reference
Tolkien's words used in the film with
the Book; but the Last time I read it a
couple of years ago after the
Third Movie,
Many times Dialogue
that was used, Popped off the page.

I notice the trailer is quite Hobbish <3

But that isnīt at all a prove the movie will be faithful to the book. Thatīs why I donīt say anything just based on trailers. Trailers usally cheat a lot about the movies. Anywayz, I think so far itīs clear the movie will differ a lot from the book, but for the good or for the bad thatīs uncertain until the movies to come out.

The Trilogy has many bookīs quotes and in the movie itself changes anywayz. I remember some lines are told by other characters in the films.

The book is easier than LOTR, because the trilogy wasnīt easy, so Iīm hoping The Hobbit has no need of so many differences.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear quotes from LotR that didn't make the cut last time out as well.

In particular a few from Saruman, disparaging Radagast, and Gandalf's tobacco habit.

There is also potential

For more quotes directly from the book in future extended cuts of The Hobbit.
There were plenty in LotR, as well as scenes that more closely followed the books.

Well...

...if PJ really has a bunch more material that would justify the third movie, but WB forces him to keep the films around two hours (hijacking his original intent?), there might be a good deal to work with for extended editions.

Possible extended editions of The Hobbit trilogy

Is what I meant. PJ mentioned the topic at SDCC this year, correct me if I am wrong.

There's more film for a smaller book

I'd be disappointed if they didn't take advantage and lift quotes straight from the book.
