A trip round M.E in photos

Unfortunately, many of the very nice pictures in this thread are too big. Feel free to repost smaller ones, or just provide a link to the originals.

Thanks,

The cumulative file size of all pictures in one post should not exceed 225k (5 pictures of the maximum filesize of 45k, 10 pictures of a filesize of 22.5k, etc.). These guidelnes apply to pictures hosted on other sites as well as to pictures posted as attachments to your post. Sorry Elanorflower,

the Mirkwood pic was oversized.

Where are these images from? They're utterly gorgeous.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Hi Ataahua and thanks,

erm I take some photos myself and I find nice ones on the interweb and then I photoshop them out of all recognition to make them look as close as I can to how I imagine Middle Earth. I have done tons of the stuff, as I have a bad back and spend a lot of time in bed, and it helps to pass the time. I wanted to start from the Shire and work my way through but these are not in order of the book.

This is my favourite :-)

It reminds me of Mirrormere, and the east of the Misty Mountains, rather than Mordor.

It's Corfe Castle!

I use to spend a lot of my childhood in this area - and visited this particular castle quite a lot! Fascinating history.

I'm not surprised - it is in a very idyllic part of the country

I always thought Castle Coch had a Middle-earth feel about it as well.

Oh yes, John Howe!

Part of why I never really liked his illustrations...

But yeah, I have R&B's Hobbit images seared into my head (saw the cartoon before I read the book), and have difficulty seeing Bilbo as anything but a huge-headed creature with massive round eyes.

Honestly

These photos make me wish that LOTR and the Hobbit were shot in Europe rather than New Zealand.

I always felt that the Pacific light, and the young terrain of New Zealand, were all wrong for Middle Earth...

Ah, well. I guess it gave their tourism industry a boost, which is a good thing...

I don't think it's a bad interpretation of Rivendell

Not ideal, of course. I actually imagine this is what Minas Tirith on Tol Sirion looks like. Just larger, and grander.

I generally like all Tolkien illustrators apart from Nasmith, not too keen on his stuff, but its all personal taste.

I agree about Rohan anyway,

I was disappointed there. I was expecting the green pastures and sea of grasses, not that yellow scrubby stuff.

But Lee, Blok and Tolkien himself are my favorite artistic interpreters of Tolkien.

and I know what 'coch' means...

having done the Welsh dance, Ty Coch Caerdydd - Red House of Cardiff. - coch=red

Interestingly (and terribly off topic) there is a Scottish dance called Red House and and English one, as well - none of the three are the same dance but there seems to be something about Red Houses - or maybe the dances were all written for the same red house.

and in case anyone is wondering ddraig = dragon. :-)

The Welsh know dragons!

Elanor, all but one of the pictures in this thread are too big

I deleted all but one of the pictures because they either exceeded the maximum dimensions (width x height) or file size. We need to limit the size of pictures here mostly due to finite server storage space (it adds up over years and years!). I also cut out some of the bottom of the thread completely because it was taking too long to delete all the pictures.

Please refer to the picture posting guidelines from the FAQ below (and also on the Welcome board). There's also a link to a picture posting guide provided by Magpie that will help you figure out how to resize the pictures. Feel free to either re-size them and re-post, or just link to your source or photo album, and let people follow the link to the full-size picture (and advantage to linking is you can put all the links in one post). Anyway, either is fine really. Beautiful pictures, btw!

Thanks!
