Felt the same

Hopefully, the Comic-Con motion posters or something very similar will see release as we draw closer to December (so many movies do character posters these days, but TH is a production that could really benefit from them)!

Nice image of the collected Dwarves, however....Fili really, for the first time to me, is giving off a strong "Heir of Thorin" vibe there; but poor Bombur, I get the feeling he's going to have even less dignity than in the book! Tongue

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

If you look at the poster and don't think he's way out of place, then there's no point in trying to convince you otherwise.

Fili looks every bit as "human" as Kili does, he just has slightly more of a beard. Just look at pictures of Dean O'Gorman as he normally is and you can see they did very ,very little to his face. The only thing is he has a big nose, which he has in real life(he'd fit right in with the Stewards of Gondor:)), though I suppose they might have augmented it a tiny bit but it's not enough to make it obviously so, so unless you're saying that THE thing that makes for dwarfishness is a big nose, then I can't see how Fili looks any more dwarfish. There isn't anything more "dwarfish" about his features, whatever that means.

OK well look at the guy next to him, Bofur, now imagine Bofur as young, what makes you think he looked anymore dwarfish? He doesn't have a big nose, bit exaggerated in it's turned uppedness but not outlandishly so, and he doesn't really have a beard either. So imagine Bofur as a young man, aside from perhaps being somewhat less goodlooking, how would he have looked more dwarflike than Kili does? In fact how does he really look more dwarflike now? He seems to be relatively slender, doesn't have excessive facial hair, doesn't have a long large nose.

It's because they don't, Kili's the youngest, he's got the least facial hair, but he doesn't look any less like a dwarf in his actual facial features than his brother, his uncle or the guy they stuck next to him on the poster.

but I'm curious. Have any of the promotional materials included a "Part One" anywhere?

I'm thinking back to the old days when my sister called me a few months after we watched FOTR together to let me know they were making a sequel. I know many, if not most, people who are going to see this movie have read the news of a trilogy on the internet by now, but I wonder how many casual movie fans will be taken aback at the end of the first movie?

When you right a reply (or post)

You can click on Get Markup Help next to Post Style. Or by just clicking on the link! Scroll down to the bottom, and you'll find how to do it.

Basically, you put:

{url "http://link to wherever"}bla bla bla{/url}

Replacing any { } for [ ]. You'll then get "bla bla bla" rather than the entire link.

Make any sense? Tongue

Drew Struzan look

Even though it is a bit cliche now to represent EPIC, I would certainly not dislike the Hobbit films getting that same kind of treatment (imagine all six hanging on a wall *drool), but at the same time I wonder if it sends the wrong message.

Obviously Peter is making these films epic, but it might be a little misleading to make this story appear more epic in scope than it really is in comparison...

They just look like great film posters to me. I don't think they say anything about the tone of the films. I'll be disappointed if The Hobbit films don't get the same treatment.

And if they are going for a different tone, and wish to express that in the film posters, just use lighter colours. Smile

I think they are beautiful too

All I'm saying is that style has a precedent for being used for films that are marketed as big epics and blockbusters (star wars, blade runner, indiana jones, etc.).

I'm hoping The Hobbit films get the Struzan treatment too, but I feel like this one we received today says that The Hobbit isn't going to just be your typical epic adventure story. It communicates the humor and also the non-conventional heroes we will be treated to.

I love this one because it feels big (epic), but FUN and HUMOROUS as well. Really captures the adventure vibe. If AUJ's "Struzan-style" poster captures both sides that would be rad.

Notice another Raider's poster

http://posterwire.com/wp-content/uploads/raiders_of_the_lost_ark.jpg

seems way too serious for what eventually ended up on screen.

I like it, overall

I like that there is a more comedic and light-hearted poster as well as the more sombre Gandalf in the shire poster.

Movie posters should give some indication of the tone and content of a movie, and since it seems that TH is going to have more light and fun moments, compared to the seriousness of LotR, it seems appropriate for the posters to reflect this.

I also wonder if the posters we will see for the next two movies might be more 'serious', as TH gets darker and more sinister as the story progresses.

My wife, who likes the Tolkien movies but is not a fan in the sense that we all are Wink, asked me yesterday if I'd seen the new Hobbit poster. She'd received it from an equally unfannish friend, who thought it was cute. So that suggests it has been effective from a marketing perspective.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Doesn't it bother you

that they got the light from the Star of Eärendil wrong? And when did Arwen wear that gown?

I know you're being facetious

But it really does bother me that we don't get to see Arwen's other scenes! Shocked
