New AUJ Poster

Saw this on IMDB...looks pretty good IMO. It fits with the LotR posters, and I like Bilbo's grim look of determination here.

Interestingly, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, and James Nesbitt are the only Dwarf actors listed on the credit block...they are three of the best known/most experienced cast members portraying Thorin & Co. (was surprised not to see Graham McTavish as well), but it would seem to possibly further confirm that Balin and Bofur will two of the most significant/featured Dwarf characters.

Also...Ian McKellan has first billing...even over Martin Freeman!

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

I don't like it.

It's fine for a teaser but to the general audience it says nothing. Yes, LOTR had that poster with Frodo holding the ring but wasn't that an early teaser poster? We're already closing in on the end of September, shouldn't there be a final theatrical sheet out by now? I hope this is not the poster that they'll put in theaters.

RE: Captain Salt

Thanks for the link. It's an interesting choice to place Ian above Martin on the credits. I understand (kind of) if they've billed him second, but first...*scratches head*

But anyway, the release date is getting closer and closer. And with a new poster out too - yey!

Posters are so uninspired these days...

I hate all of the loiterific posters we get, especially with blockbusters that are meant to look bold and imaginative. The only poster of late that I can say looks decent despite this issue is for 'Lincoln'. All theatrical posters look like these days are teaser posters.

Liv Tyler was disappointed

that she hasn't been asked to reprise her role (even if it were for a small cameo).

So maybe PJ heard it and paged her (or will call her) .. I mean, they'll shoot some stuff next summer, so there's still some place for her in the third movie on the way back to Bag-End. Bilbo will make another stop in revendell, so why not place her there for all us fanboys and girls? But I would be a lot more interested in some kind of Viggo Mortensen appearance .. Maybe for the few minutes of bridge stuff .. (hunting Gollum) .. but that's all highly improbable, so just big speculation on my side .. We can't be all pleased :P

Where Liv expressed her disappointment. I was sad for her; it seemed like she really wanted to return because she liked her experience on LOTR.

I really don't think we'll see her, but one can always hope. I'd like to just see her once, as a background elf in Rivendell. No lines. No *wink-wink* at the camera. Just an innocent shot.

I think it is an attractive poster.

And I think that the story has Bilbo at the center. Furthermore, as far as advertising and marketing, I think it will attract those who follow Martin Freeman as an actor in general.
However, I hope that there are some posters that show more than this, like the dwarves for instance, and Gandalf.

Nothing against Martin

But aren't there a lot more The Lord of the Rings and/or Action Fantasy film fans out there than Martin Freeman fans? Not that the poster is bad, I just think it Bilbo should be "zoomed out" a little bit with more of middle-earth behind and maybe some goblins and dwarves hiding in the backround.

I actually have grown to like the poster, but I think other poster designs would have been better.

I think it depends on where you look.

LotR has a much older and wider fanbase, but Martin Freeman is a "hot property" right now because of Sherlock - he and Benedict Cumberbatch have a huge following and might arguably have more name- and face-recognition among casual moviegoers.

On place like Tumblr, the Martin Freeman fans vastly outnumber the Tolkien fans - but then, most of the Tolkien fans are here. :)

This troll (the one on the left, lifting Bilbo), for example, looks to me like a less hairy version of the leftmost Comic-Con troll (particularly if comparing their noses). The troll to the right, meanwhile, could be the middlemost Comic-Con troll, although I think that's a much less obvious match (once again, it lies in the nose).

The most important thing though, I think; They look human enough to be capable of speech. Cool

There's something to this...

It's a creeping ennui... but I don't think it's because we've been following this thing for so long. Rather I think it's cognitive dissonance presenting as boredom, the result of The Hobbit being marketed the same way so many other films are marketed, and apparently with about the same amount of effort and creativity.

Why would they try to force Bilbo into the role this image implies? It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever...

Why?

I'll tell you why: it's because that's how they market movies. I can already see this one staring at me from a light box with the words "coming soon" (and in the fullness of time, "now playing"). Instead of filling me with anticipation, this image is likely to give me nightmares.

What is doubly perplexing is the Gandalf poster from Comic con was brilliant all around.

The funny thing of course is that LOTR is partly (or even mostly) responsible for the way geek films have been marketed over the past decade. LOTR was different though, and that is what made it special. Perhaps sequels and prequels seem flat because essentially they are cats that came back... ah, I'm just rambling.

Maybe it boils down to we have seen a fair bit of Bilbo already and we're quite ready for a glimps of something else? Nah I'm sticking with cognitive dissonance presenting as ennui.

I just don't remember him hacking his way through M-e.

He was more subtle and wily than that, relying on his charm and eventually the Ring.

Now I'm not saying that Bilbo is going to be the character this poster implies... based on what we have seen of him from the trailers, he will very much follow book Bilbo.

It's just a misleading poster is all, and therefore not to my liking. I love his jacket though.
