i really like the new beefed up stone giants sequence

PJ took something that was very intriguing but only touched on briefly in the book and went "rocks out" on it! those things almost look indestructible! how would you kill something that is made out of stone...?

I wasn't sure they would even put it in the film...

but it gives them a good reason to find a cave, of course. It certainly ramps up the danger faced OUTSIDE the mountain. The way it was described in the book, you wouldn't have thought that any giant came near them, only the boulders the giants were tossing. But I guess Jackson's going to give the Dwarves and Company a close-up view after all.

"It's a queer country out here", Pa said. "Strange things happen."
"Yes", said Ma. "I'm thankful that so far they don't happen to us."

Maybe blow them up like Saruman blew up the wall at Helms Deep.
Or summon lightning like saruman did when The fellowship tried to cross over the mountain in FOTR.
Basically Saruman could kick their azz ...lol

but he would have to do that

from afar, because if we was in tossing stones distance he would meet his end very quickly!

Well he summoned the lightning while in his tower. So that would work. ;-)

I think it's great!

I was hoping they would get included!

But I had the same thought process... How would you destroy one??

Umm, kill them?

In the book, they're throwing stones, but not at Thorin and co. There's no reason to kill them; they're not evil.

I'm not sure if I'm going to like this expansion.

send the balrog?

its a good thing sauron never recruited them! you wouldn't need the wolf's head to break into minas tirith or the dynamite to break into helm's deep. i don't think lightning would work Dlanor da Great, have you seen lightning when it hits boulders? it just causes them to roll around or down a hill, the lightning would have to be powerful to crack the stone...

Well we can't tell for sure, yet.

And I never said they were throwing them at the company.

What I did say is that, according to the book, there's no reason to kill them because they're not evil or attacking the company.

My thoughts exactly!

We see the giant on two distinct occasion in the trailer: once throwing and once falling. But is the same giant doing both? What if there are two of them, one above/behind the company and one in front of them. The poor company may have stumbled upon a rather nasty domestic dispute. I can just see them being a gigantic couple struggling through a rocky time in their relationship. Perhaps one was taking the other for granite, while the other was being too sedimental.

I'll see myself out.

So are you suggesting

their relationship was going through a rocky patch?

All artists are prepared to suffer for their work, but why are so few prepared to learn to draw? :BANKSY

In the book, it was for fun.

But the trailer certainly makes it seem like they're being thrown at the Company. And we've only seen one of them. I hope there are more.

I think there are two.

One is ahead, throwing stones at the company and the other one is above them which is also the one who falls down at the end of the trailer

Falling?

I've been trying to work that out. Is it a Stone Giant falling, or the side of the cliff falling apart?

So I am quite sure it is a falling giant.

There are plenty of reason Sauron might not be able to recruit them

Maybe they derive their power from the mountains, so can't leave.

Maybe they only come alive at night.

Maybe there a law unto themselves who just love trashing stuff so would be just as likely to start trampling on orcs and smashing up Barad-dur as they are attacking minas Tirith.

They look bloody cool whatever they are.

Or like the Jotunheim trolls in Trollhunter who allegedly throw rocks at each other in a large field.

Hehe.

Puns aside though, I think you're on to it. By the looks of it, we have one giant ahead of the company, and that one giant who falls just beside them. I think it's just the giants throwing rocks at each other until one of them falls over, not so much a proper battle (unless the falling giant is actually felled by some over-the-top heroics from the dwarves) as the company merely being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Very cool!

I was also familiar with the tale, having been a long-time student of Norse myth and folk tales. Loved that the Trollhunter film-makers worked it into the movie.

Haven't been to the site myself, but would like to.

I hope thats correct

that the giants are still just throwing the rocks at each other instead of them trying to hinder Bilbo and the dwarves way. That would be an awful change IMO. But if the stone giants are merely playing some form of football I can live with that.

Hopefully they are just in the wrong place at the wrong time

Stone giants are dangerous, apparently

The dwarves were not simply afraid they would be hit by a boulder; they were afraid the stone giants would target them/pick them up and punt them. I don't think the dwarves could have caused the stone giant to stumble as shown in the trailer, though, so my guess is another stone giant beaned him with a boulder.

Galaxy Quest was a fun show

Probably too late for this comment to matter, but I did get your reference, and in fact I was thinking the same thing when I saw the stone giant falling down. Must be a distant relation.
