Sarumans Uruk- Hai VS. Saurons Orcs

The Uruk-Hai were better armed and were bigger and stronger but the orcs of Mordor were battle hardened and had numbers.

According to a book I read about the films

Sauron attacks Gondor with a force of 600,000 Orcs! Compare that to Saruman's army of 10,000 Uruk-Hai and it's clear that numbers will happily win the day on this one.Wink

Don't think so

I don't think so, according to the Atlas Of Middle Earth there were only 45,000 orcs.

You may be right

Actually thinking back I heard that statement on one of the DVD extras of LOTR ROTK (the theatrical release). Still, I think that 45,000 Orcs would happily win against 10,000 Uruk-Hai.

Maybe

Uruk-Hai are more powerful and I believe Saruman was making then at a faster rate than Sauron.

But..................

Sauron also didn't send his forces from Mordor only from Minas Morgul so Sauron would have a quite larger army.

The lord of the rings wiki says 200,000 for the movie, 100,000 in the books. Now I'm not saying the lord of the rings wiki is more accurate than the atlas of middle earth, quite the opposite I'd say, but still...makes me wonder where they got those numbers at...

Numbers at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields

I don't think the number of Orcs at the battle was given by Tolkien. Numbers are given for the Gondorian reinforcements (2,700) and the Rohirrim (6,000) but the only part of the Witch-king's army that is counted out is the Haradrim contingent that Théoden goes up against (about 18,000 - or 'thrice' the number of Rohirrim).

If Saruman can put together 10,000 Orcs (plus Dunlendings) I reckon you can extrapolate a far larger number for Sauron's Orcish hordes - of which only a portion sallied forth against Minas Tirith. The 6,000 or so under Aragorn's command at the Battle of the Morannon were literally swamped by the Orcs of Mordor and the Easterlings - even after the losses suffered by Sauron on the Pelennor Fields.

Welcome to the Mordorfone network, where we put the 'hai' back into Uruk

Don't forget

That Sauron also had his own Uruk-Hai in his army. So Sauron definitely wins this

This is easy

Uruk-hai are a nearly perfect specimen for combat. They are bigger, faster and stronger than the orcs. Besides orcs are scared of light which gives the uruk-hai a bonus advantage. Remember the movies folks. The Uruk-hai were eating them outside the Fangorn forest before the Rohirrim arrived for Gods sake. An uruk-hai could easily kill 3 to 5 orcs and then eat them.

"But a small dark figure that none had observed sprang out of the shadows and gave a hoarse shout: 'Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!' An axe swung and swept back. Two Orcs fell headless. The rest fled."
