"The Hobbit" - An overview of the figures
BY FLORIAN Breitsameter ⋅ July 9, 2012 ⋅ COMMENT LETTER
FILED UNDER Bilbo Baggins, SAME, Gloin, Hobbit, JRR TOLKIEN, THORIN OAK PLATE
J.R.R. Tolkien's children's book "The Hobbit" is set in Middle-earth 60 years before "The Lord of the Rings". This book describes how the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Wizard is an adventure with dwarves talking about - and what a find, he makes on this journey that changed him forever ...
Peter Jackson has extended the novel's action on two films, the first part of the title of "The Hobbit - an unexpected journey," and on 13 carries December 2012 will be released in Germany.

Bilbo Baggins
Like all hobbits Bilbo Baggins appreciates his comfortable life. It is equipped with a full pantry and a good book completely satisfied. When the wizard Gandalf shows up unexpectedly with 13 dwarves and asks him to accompany her on a dangerous adventure that will change Bilbo's life from scratch. He is initially skeptical, but because he is adventurous, he joins a group of Thorin Oakenshield and becomes the "master thief", they need to bring back a ferocious dragon to outwit and the stolen treasure of the dwarves. To everyone's surprise - including his own - to Bilbo turns out to be smarter and braver than the outward appearance would suggest.

GANDALF THE GREY
Gandalf is one of the most powerful wizard in Middle Earth. He participates in the mission to free the dwarf kingdom of Erebor and retrieve the vast treasure which is guarded there in stone halls of the fire-breathing dragon Smaug the Terrible. Gandalf the way evidence is that the world could be haunted by an ancient evil. To get to the truth of the matter, must leave his companions, Gandalf himself - his own path leads him into the darkest corners of Middle-earth, where he found his worst suspicions confirmed.

THORIN OAK PLATE
As a young prince dwarf Thorin has witnessed the terrible devastation that has brought a fire-breathing dragon on the dwarf kingdom of Erebor. No one stood in the surviving dwarves - so had the once proud and noble people go into exile. During the long years of misery Thorin into a strong, fearless fighter and revered leader is grown. In his heart grew, the burning desire to win back his homeland and destroy the beast, which is responsible for the plight of his people.

Balin
Balin is a noble dwarf and one of the oldest members in the dwarf host. By nature wise and gentle, he had to get used to a military life, as he hovered constantly in danger. As a close cousin of Thorin Oakenshield he is one of the closest and most trusted advisers. But deep in his heart to ask the wisest and most faithful of the dwarves, whether it is wise to try to reclaim the Lonely Mountain.

Dwalin
The famous warrior Dwalin not keep his opinions to himself. Anyone who tries to defeat it should be on guard. Unshakable, he believes in Thorin's leadership. The powerful, gruff warrior can dish it and tends to distrust of all non-dwarfs - primarily the same. He is proud, brave and one of the largest dwarf - he orders only someone with whom he respected.

FILI
Fili is from the royal line of Durin and grew under the watchful eye of his uncle to Thorin Oakenshield. Fili and Kili, the brothers are among the youngest in the group of dwarves. Fili is hardly traveled - yet he has never seen the legendary city of Erebor dwarf. For the experienced fighters is the trip to the Lonely Mountain an exciting adventure - he can not imagine the least of the challenges and dangers await him.

KILI
Kili is Filis younger brother and nephew of Thorin Oakenshield faithful. The careless and even reckless Kili has been a charmed, carefree life out. He looks good, has strong muscles and with the invincible courage of the youth is well prepared. A capable fighter and an excellent archer, he is familiar with since his early childhood weapons. As one of the youngest in the crowd will dwarf Kili distinguish themselves and make an impression.

Bofur
The sympathetic Bofur has to give the terrible habit of self-evident by themselves - he babbles off without thinking. Bofur appreciates music and has a good singing voice thrilled for good food and good company, above all, he remains optimistic in every situation. He is not particularly brave, but everybody comes to the rescue when it is needed - above all, he supported his friends. With his brother and cousin Bifur Bombur he accompanied the companions to lonely mountain, because he wants to make his fortune. He has also heard that there is free beer.

Bifur
Bifurcations is from the west, and carries the rusted remains of a orc ax in his forehead. Since he can not speak anymore, and sometimes he is ruthless! He communicates only through grunts and hand signals. Unlike the other dwarves in the crowd he is not related to Thorin and it also came not from a noble race, but is a descendant of miners and blacksmiths - ordinary people with simple needs.

Bombur
Bofurs brother and cousin Bifurs is the chef of the dwarf host. His huge size and its voracious appetite often bring problems with it - but the tour group as he can laugh at it heartily. Although he's fat, he proves to be surprisingly agile fighter - woe to those that keep him from his dinner!

Gloin
Of all the fellows in the Dwarf throng that heading out to the Lonely Mountain, is the loudest and Gloin starrsinnigste - fearless, he is questioning all authority. He rushes to light, but it is strong, courageous and loyal. Gloin is one of the few married dwarves in the group (in principle, there is a lack of female dwarfs). His wife is a famous beauty with a very fine beard. Gloin is the proud father of a young son named Gimli, who becomes one of the famous Ring-Fellowship.

OIN
This courageous dwarf from the north, like his brother, a distant cousin of Gloin Thorin Oakenshield. They are members of Thorin & Co., because they feel obligated to their relatives, and because they have invested a considerable sum of money into the company. Oin is very well read, likes to present questions, is the healer of the crowd and even used it up mixed ointments.

DORI
Dori is distantly related to Thorin Oakenshield and the elder brother of Nori and Ori. Dori is the strongest dwarf in the crowd, and spends most of her time taking care of Ori, the youngest, so that is not cold or killed by the Orcs and Wargs. He is an eternal pessimist and always prepared for the worst - yet he is always ready to risk his life at risk in order to fulfill its mission.

NORI
Of all the companions in dwarf Thorin Oakenshield crowd Nori is most difficult to classify. Again and again he comes into conflict with the authorities dwarf. Because he holds it necessary to leave his residence, he is now ready to join the ride to the Lonely Mountain, because he does not understand that the problems lie ahead of him are much more serious than that which he wants to escape. No one really knows what Nori leads up to, except that it is risky and probably illegal. Dori, Nori and Ori hold unswervingly faithful together. Among themselves they are fighting continually, but alas, if anyone should dare to inflict any harm to one of the brothers!

ORI
The younger brother of Dori and Nori is artistically gifted - often we see how he draws or writes in his diary. Ori wrote a large part of the chronicle of a journey through wild country to the shores of Long Lake and the slopes of Lone Mountain. Ori is polite, well educated and accustomed to being pushed around by his older brother Dori. Normally, he is docile, but sometimes he surprised his companions by his courage and his determination.

Radagast the Brown
Radagast is forgetful acts, scattered light and very eccentric. He talks a lot better with animals than with people. As a magician colleague and friend of Gandalf the Grey Radagast is one of the guardians of the great forests of Middle-earth. Often you meet him on his walks through the woods near his strange little house called Rhosgobel. The little magician senses impending doom, because not everything is as it should be in the dark corners of Mirkwood.

Saruman the White
The venerable and mighty Saruman, with four other magicians to the Guardians of Middle Earth that will help the world of order and balance. Above all, Saruman the fate of the free nations arranged according to his discretion. As head of the White Council, he fears with growing unease that Gandalf the Grey and Thorin Oakenshield could mess up his careful calculations companions. Saruman is indeed very old and wise out there, but according to its underlying weakness, and lusts for power - a greed that ultimately produce the most deadly of all Covenants.

ELROND
Elrond is one of the oldest and wisest Elves, who still live in Middle Earth. He is the Lord of Rivendell, the last homely house east of the Sea. Thorin & Co. maintained only briefly in Rivendell, Elrond offers but Bilbo and the dwarves and lodging. The dwarves have a natural aversion to the same, but the means to take a call. Elrond responded warily to the project while the dwarves to reclaim their stolen treasure, but he gives those secret information that Gandalf and Thorin need to reach the Lonely Mountain.

GALADRIEL
Galadriel is the oldest of the remaining elves in Middle-earth and has the gift of Providence. As the signs are increasing that Middle-earth threatens disaster, they secretly supported Gandalf in his mission to track down the cause of the problem. Galadriel is known of course that the Fellowship must succeed if the evil power can not win the upper hand and dominate the darkness does not want anything.

Thranduil
The mighty Elf-lord and legendary warrior Legolas Thranduil's father. As king, he rules over forest land to the north of a large forest area, once known as the Green Forest and now bears the ominous name of Mirkwood. During the long years of darkness Thranduil has increasingly isolated from the outside world - he cares only about his own people. An ancient, bitter feud has discharged meant that he basically rejects all dwarves - and especially a certain dwarf, namely Thorin Oakenshield.

Legolas
Legolas is the Prince of the forest land and a high empire same as his father Thranduil. However, you meet him often at the royal court - much rather he patrols the area with the forest guards of the same troops. The large narrow-savvy fighter is his father and his people, resulting in unconditional loyalty. But the events of the outside world behind now and in the isolated world of forest elves left their mark. Because he sees the disaster coming, Legolas faces the choice of either his father or his conscience to follow.

TAURIEL
A native of the Mirkwood Waldelbin is as dangerous as well. As a protégé of King Thranduil and commander of the Forest Land Protection Tauriel troops is very opinionated and passionate about representing what she thinks is right. The great warrior proved to be the use of her two daggers and bows and arrows. As Legolas in Tauriel turns in the battle to be extremely quick and agile. She has lived for hundreds of years in Middle-earth, but still one of the youngest of the same people, and has rarely ventured out of the great forest.

TROLLS
Tom, Bert and William are trolls who have settled in the Trollshaws and pillage everything and eat whatever they cross paths. As Thorin & Co. inadvertently disturb their evening meal, capture the trolls Bilbo and the dwarf band and make immediately began to process them to a banquet - they have no idea that Bilbo and his friends will hardly accept this without a fight.

ORK-KING
The Orc King is a huge, grotesquely bloated monster that is in the years of his tyrannical rule over the miserable inhabitants of the Orc town grown fat and flabby. The orc city is a collection of hovels askew deep in the caves of the Misty Mountains. He commanded a bunch of spoiled, contaminated, with scars and ulcers studded orcs. Basically, they are bandits, they live by what they can pick up the passengers on the passes through the mountains. It manages the Orc King and his followers, Bilbo and the dwarves to capture. The Großork is smarter and smarter than it seems. He takes pleasure in torturing his prisoners - it almost succeeds in making Oakenshield Thorin and his companions to finish off.

GRINNAH
Grinnah is the interrogator of the Orcs. He ensures that Thorin & Co. are brought before the Großork. He constantly wears a reinforced barbed whip and takes every opportunity to use it. Although cunning and vicious, he is like all Orcs basically a coward. Fawning and obsequious, he serves his master, the rich and moody Großork, but secretly he despised him.

Azog
It was said that the molester was Azog many years ago, fell in the great battle between the Orcs and the Dwarves. But now he appears at the top of a deadly horde of killer orcs again. For Gandalf begins a race against time because he has to figure out where the connection between the dangerous orc commander and the growing evil, which takes in the ruins of the fortress of Dol Guldur forms. One thing is abundantly clear: no one is deterred from his purpose Azog, Thorin Oakenshield destroyed to the last dwarf companions.

Fimbul
The most cruel orc Fimbul among Azogs champion hunters. He commanded a horde of warg riders who trace their victims in the saddle of their gigantic wolf beasts. Fimbul has taken up the scent of Thorin Oakenshield & Co. and will catch the dwarves before they reach the Lonely Mountain.

BLOG
Bolg is the offspring of Azog the Defiler - like his father, he is a paler giant orc. He is the overseer in the dungeons of Dol Guldur - torture is his hobby. His armor he polychrome from the bones and the blood of his victims. This husky Orc has at nothing and no one fears - until he suddenly meets an unexpected opponent.

GOLLUM
Gollum was once a Hobbit-like creature named Smeagol - body and soul have been poisoned by a small, plain gold ring, which he hid in a cave düsternen the Misty Mountains. Gollum does not know what is going on with "his treasure" - but he realizes that he is more valuable than his life. After the chance encounter with a strange enemy Gollum realizes that he has lost "his treasure", and rightly concludes: The hobbit Bilbo Baggins of the Shire has stolen it. So begins the hunt over mountains and through deserts, take years and cost many lives, until this miserable creature, finally, the fate of Middle-earth holds in his hand.

Beorn
The giant Beorn is the last of the ancient people of the skin changer: He can transform into a huge bear-like creature. He lives alone, only tolerate the company of his beloved animals and appreciate any visitors - especially not dwarfs. Gandalf knows that they take the risk and Beorn companions have to ask for help, because otherwise they will survive their journey through wild country barely.

ADLER
The ancient Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains are huge birds of prey, which the prince Gwahir, Lord of the winds above,. The wild and dangerous animals are owed nothing to anyone. Just because they hold true to Gandalf, Bilbo and giant birds come to the aid of the dwarves in order to save the last minute from the clutches of a deadly enemy.

Wargs
The huge, fierce, wolf-like monsters are among the most fearsome predators in the whole of Middle-earth. The Orcs grow the Wargs to hunt in packs and often ride on their backs in the battle. The most dangerous of these beings is the White Warg, a giant wolf, the Azog the large, pale Orc riding the abuser.

GIANT SPIDERS of Mirkwood
In the course of many years, giant spiders in the once peaceful green forest and nestled helped that he got the weird name Mirkwood. It is believed that these creatures are the offspring of monstrous Krankra the Great. They feed on hapless travelers, the agreement in the forest from the right path. But the big catch as a dwarf spider in its web host, they suddenly get it with an unusual, unseen opponents do, its sting is even greater than her own!

My first impression is

I wish I could take the screen name Grossork.

My second is, uggh. Some of the goblin stuff sounds like Lurtz all over again, and the unnecessary dwarf characterizations are as cookie-cutter as I'd feared.

Man is but an ass if he go about to expound this dream.

Not yet official, but

These are certainly realistic possibilities.

Looks like the Orcs of the Misty Mountains will indeed be connected to Dol Guldur, as I expected.

Keeping Azog alive, and also giving us his son Bolg, does seem like an odd decision, though...

Intriguing...

Some tantalizing info in these descriptions...

Bofur speaking impulsively gels with his little shpeal about Smaug in the Comic-Con footage

Azog working in Dol Guldur? Gandalf investigating the connection between the Goblins and the Necromancer? Hmm..."giant pale Orc" brings Gothmog to mind. We've seen an extra cast as a "Gundabad Orc", so how does this work in Azog is based out of the Tower of Sorcery (unless his Gundabad forces have followed him there)?

I thought he'd pretty much figured out Grinnah was a Werewolf...(unless he simply has Werewolves under his command, thus the GW "Grinnah & Mirkwood Werewolves" model)

But no source to speak of for these?

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Big changes with Azog

Not sure about that but I don't have too big a problem. I guess him surviving accord with mention of Azog (Wounded) in the Games Workshop list. Looks like Mount Gundabad won't feature, which is a shame.

And I hope the unexpected opponent for Bolg is Beorn and not Gandalf.

They went with some of the obvious dwarf name derivations...

"Bifurcate" for "Bifur" was pretty obvious, but now "Ointment" for "Oin" too...?

And Azog's alive? WHY?

"No one really knows what Nori leads up to, except that it is risky and probably illegal." ....I have no idea what to even speculate about that. Dori, Nori, and Ori have some nefarious scheme of their own going on?

Why all the changessss? /whine

Gotta love Google Translate though.

Nori just seems like a bit of a kleptomaniac...

They've been a few references to this previously (the blurb from the first official photo of Dori/Nori/Ori released last Summer, Jed Brophy's mention that Nori would "steal all the silverware" should one invite him over) and for some reason, he appears to be standing facing the corner during the rendition of "Misty Mountains" in the teaser...probably as he's been a very naughty little Dwarf! Would make little to no sense for Brophy to simply fabricate a story about his character being a bit of a thief. His comments, plus some official descriptions, have made it clear for a while now that he will be a klepto.

So, Bifur is not going to properly speak...interesting

While I'm uncertain about the idea, it could produce some comedic moments.

On a related note, the article does not say much about Oin, a character whom I (and others) suspected as being portrayed as hard of hearing, due to the clip shown in the trailer.

"Radagast is, of course, a worthy wizard, a master of shapes and changes of hue, and he has much lore of herbs and beasts, and birds are especially his friends."-Gandalf, The Lord of the Rings.

A pretty good hint we're going to see him do something not so nice to Thror and/or Moria...

Interesting is an understatement about Azog

" Azog It was said that the molester was Azog many years ago, fell in the great battle between the Orcs and the Dwarves. But now he appears at the top of a deadly horde of killer orcs again. For Gandalf begins a race against time because he has to figure out where the connection between the dangerous orc commander and the growing evil, which takes in the ruins of the fortress of Dol Guldur forms. One thing is abundantly clear: no one is deterred from his purpose Azog, Thorin Oakenshield destroyed to the last dwarf companions."

So the old head on a pike thing was all a conspiracy :). I'm a huge fan of the battle of Azanulbizar and am rather concerned that Azog being alive would mean we will miss out on some gruesome vendetta material (not to mention Dain's claim to fame), but maybe they somehow intend to have the cake and eat it too by giving us a bizarre undead and extremely vengeful Azog. It seems the list of potential zombies keeps growing. But I would have assumed that his son Bolg would have been enough of a nemesis on his own without dredging up Azog.

Always good to be skeptical

Until you have enough evidence.

My favorite part of the translation is this:
"He is initially skeptical, but because he is adventurous, he joins a group of Thorin Oakenshield and becomes the "master thief", they need to bring back a ferocious dragon to outwit and the stolen treasure of the dwarves."

Change of plan, they are not going to kill or chase Smaug away, but going to bring the dragon back with them! How's that for a spoiler! They must have found out the going rate of live dragons on the black market was greater than all the gold in the mountain. Sly

Woah, quite a lot of information there

Hmm... This suggests Bifur won't be speaking dwarvish (Khuzdal?) as suggested by Kircher in one of the vlogs and pre comic con info. Bifur communicating through hand gestures does confirm what some expected he was doing in the teaser trailer. I quite like the idea of Oin being a medic. To me it makes sense that at least one the group can perform first aid on what is likely to be a dangerous journey Wink.

Not to sure what to think of Azog still being alive since his death contained a lot of impact and sets up the character of Dain very well. Hopefully have more information about Azog soon.

None of them hint towards Bifur speaking Khuzdul in the films

He just speaks a line during an interview...

My guess is that Bifur doesn't speak the entire time, and then, at some point perhaps during the BoFA, says:

And that's it.

Four outers, excludes himself, which would mean

Gandalf,Radagast, Alatar and Pallando, though we are not at all likely to see those two.

More interesting is that Elrond is the Oldest Elf in Middle-Earth (he is NOT) and so is Galadriel. Wonder how that worked

I don't like this increasing suggestion that Gandalf is going to make all his discoveries right here in The Hobbit. . . but it isn't beyond what I suspected. I don't care what some of the ardent supporters say, I sense a great deal of what some would call fan fiction coming our way.

How is it an improvement?

The only thing that can explain this is Jackson having some sort of fetish for the name Azog and an irrational dislike of Bolg.

The death of Azog is a significant event. To undermine it is a mistake.

So Jackson wants a major antagonist. Fine. You've got Bolg. Have Bolg witness his father's death at the battle of Azanulbizar. Have Bolg as the chief Orc threat at Dol Guldor. Give him a made-up son who will seemingly be killed in part 1 and thus instill further hate in his father.

There's no need for this plain odd Azog business. I'm annoyed because it's quite clear from the description and the Gandalf/Bolg two-pack that Gandalf will kill Bolg in the first film, and it will be Azog who commands the Orcs at the Five Armies instead. It's a nonsensical change. I don't understand it ata ll.

If Azog must survive Azanulbizar, then at least have him being badly wounded and crawling into Moria, at which point Dain follow hims but gets a glimpse of the Balrog and refuses to go any further. I think that's the best way of doing it.

I think there are lots of possible explanations

But I certainly don't know enough about the details to have all the pieces.

Three thoughts, however:

1. It may be a little of the Inigo Montoya factor as you say, but conversely it may be that Azog meets his end during the first couple of films and Bolg comes back to the fore in the BOFA (though I agree it seems from the write ups here that he will encounter Gandalf at Dol Guldur)

2. We are likely to have the relationship between Sauron and the orcs explored - so Azog may play a fuller role in that.

3. It may be that Azog is acting as an additional clue in what increasingly appears to be Gandalf's mystery-solving plot line for Dol Guldur.

I think it's probably better this way instead of having a story about a goblin son avenging his goblin fathers death

Shagrat

A few things...

By the sounds of things Azog is the primary villain in both respects. Bolg, I suspect, will be guarding Thrain if he's in charge of the dungeons. From the description he sounds more like his father's lackey. If he dies during Gandalf's initial investigations, then I hardly think he'll be the main Orc adversary when they come to expel the Necromancer from Dol Guldur. What I suspect will happen will be the reverse of what you dislike but close enough - a story about a goblin father wanting to avenge his son's death.

All speculation of course, but the whole idea of Azog surviving just seems to overcomplicate things which needn't have been complicated.

Ideally Azog will be killed at Dol Guldur in film 2 (guessing when the siege/battle will take place), and Bolg will flee to Mount Gundabad, muster the Goblins and march to the Five Armies for revenge, among other things. That way they can both be primary antagonists.

It's a bad idea because Azog is dead

And his death is a major event in dwarf/orc history. There is no good reason to bring him back when you already have a major orc villain. Also, many of us would prefer Azog and Bolg to not be too closely connected to Dol Guldur.

With that said, we can't be sure that this stuff is real.

Translation

I speak German and translated it for you. It should be better to understand than the Google translation ;)
There are some very interesting informations in there that Google could not translate. For example the white warg is a she-wolf.

Here is the complete translation:

BILBO BAGGINS
Like all hobbits Bilbo Baggins appreciates his comfortable life. He is completely satisfied with a full pantry and a good book. When the wizard Gandalf shows up unexpectedly with 13 dwarves and asks him to accompany him on a dangerous adventure, Bilbo’s life changes from scratch. He is initially skeptical, but because he is adventurous, he joins the group of Thorin Oakenshield and becomes the "master thief" they need to outwit a ferocious dragon and to bring back the stolen treasure of the dwarves. To everyone's surprise - including his own - Bilbo turns out to be smarter and braver than the outward appearance would suggest.

GANDALF THE GREY
Gandalf is one of the most powerful wizards in Middle Earth. He participates in the mission to free the dwarf kingdom of Erebor and retrieve the vast treasure which is guarded there in stone halls by the fire-breathing dragon Smaug the Terrible. On his way Gandalf finds indication that the world could be haunted by an ancient evil. To get to the truth of the matter, Gandalf has to leave his companions on their own devices - his own path leads him into the darkest corners of Middle-earth, where he found his worst suspicions confirmed.

THORIN OAKENSIELD
As a young dwarf prince Thorin has witnessed the terrible devastation that has brought a fire-breathing dragon on the dwarf kingdom of Erebor. No one assisted the surviving dwarves - so the once proud and noble people had to go into exile. During the long years of misery Thorin grew into a strong, fearless fighter and revered leader. In his heart grew the burning desire to win back his homeland and destroy the beast, which is responsible for the plight of his people.

BALIN
Balin is a noble dwarf and one of the oldest members in the dwarf company. By nature wise and gentle, he had to get used to a military life, as he hovered constantly between life and death. As a close cousin of Thorin Oakenshield he is one of his closest and most trusted advisers. But deep in his heart the wisest and most faithful of the dwarves asks, whether it is wise to try to reclaim the Lonely Mountain.

DWALIN
The famous warrior Dwalin does not keep his opinions to himself. Anyone who messes with him should be on guard. His belief in Thorin's leadership is unshakable. The powerful, gruff warrior can dish it out and tends to distrust all non-dwarfs - primarily the Elves. He is proud, brave and one of the largest dwarves - he subordinates only to someone who he respects.

FILI
Fili is from the royal line of Durin and grew up under the watchful eye of his uncle Thorin Oakenshield. The brothers Fili and Kili are among the youngest in the group of dwarves. Fili has hardly traveled - he has never seen the legendary dwarf city of Erebor. For the experienced fighters the trip to the Lonely Mountain is an exciting adventure - he cannot imagine the least of the challenges and dangers that await him.

KILI
Kili is Filis younger brother and the faithful nephew of Thorin Oakenshield. The airily and even careless Kili has lived a sheltered and carefree life until now. He looks good, has strong muscles and is well provided with the invincible courage of the youth. As a capable fighter and an excellent archer he is familiar with weapons since his early childhood. As one of the youngest in the dwarf company Kili wants to distinguish himself and make an impression.

BOFUR
The sympathetic Bofur has the terrible habit to utter self-evident things - he babbles off without thinking. Bofur appreciates music and has a good singing voice, he gets into good food and good company, and above all, he remains optimistic in every situation. He is not particularly brave, but comes to everybodys aid when it is needed - above all, he supports his friends. With his brother Bombur and his cousin Bifur he accompanies the companions to lonely mountain, because he wants to make his fortune. He has also heard that there is free beer.

BIFUR
Bifur is from the west, and carries the rusted remains of an orc ax in his forehead. Since this he cannot speak anymore, and sometimes he gets violent! He communicates only through grunts and hand signals. Unlike the other dwarves in the company he is not related to Thorin and also does not come from a noble lineage, but is a descendant of miners and blacksmiths - ordinary people with simple needs.

BOMBUR
Bofurs brother and Bifurs cousin is the chef cook of the dwarf host. His huge size and his voracious appetite often bring problems with them - but the company like himself can laugh at it heartily. Although he's fat, he proves to be a surprisingly agile fighter - woe to those that keep him from his dinner!

GLOIN
Of all the fellows in the dwarf company heading out to the Lonely Mountain, Gloin is the loudest and most stubborn - fearless, he is questioning all authority. He has a quick temper, but is also strong, courageous and loyal. Gloin is one of the few married dwarves in the group (basically, there is a lack of female dwarfs). His wife is a famous beauty with a very fine beard. Gloin is the proud father of a young son named Gimli, who later becomes one of the famous Fellowship of the Ring.

OIN
This courageous dwarf from the north is like his brother Gloin a distant cousin of Thorin Oakenshield. They are members of Thorin & Co., because they feel obligated to their relatives, and because they have invested a considerable sum of money into the company. Oin is very well read, likes to ask questions, is the healer of the crowd and in doing so uses self mixed up ointments.

DORI
Dori is distantly related to Thorin Oakenshield and the is the elder brother of Nori and Ori. Dori is the strongest dwarf in the company and spends most of his time taking care of Ori, the youngest, so that he does not get a cold or is killed by the Orcs and Wargs. He is an eternal pessimist and always prepared for the worst - yet he is always ready to put his life on the line in order to fulfill his mission.

NORI
Of all the companions in Thorin Oakenshield’s company Nori is the most difficult to categorize. Again and again he comes into conflict with the dwarf authorities. Because he thinks it is necessary to leave his residence, he is at once ready to join the journey to the Lonely Mountain, since he does not understand that the problems that lie ahead of him are much more serious than the ones he wants to escape. No one really knows what Nori leads up to, except that it is risky and probably illegal. Dori, Nori and Ori hold unswervingly faithful together. Among themselves they are quarreling continually, but beware if anyone should dare to inflict any harm to one of the brothers!

ORI
The younger brother of Dori and Nori is artistically gifted - often we see how he draws or writes in his diary. Ori wrote a large part of the chronicle of the journey through Wilderland to the shores of Long Lake and the slopes of Lonely Mountain. Ori is polite, well educated and accustomed to being pushed around by his older brother Dori. Normally, he is obedient, but sometimes he surprises his companions with his courage and his determination.

RADAGAST THE BROWN
Radagast is forgetful, seems to be slightly absent-minded and very eccentric. He talks preferably with animals than with people. As a magician colleague and friend of Gandalf the Grey Radagast is one of the guardians of the great forests of Middle-earth. Often you meet him on his walks through the woods near his strange little house called Rhosgobel. The little wizard senses impending doom, because not everything is as it should be in the dark corners of Mirkwood.

SARUMAN THE WHITE
The venerable and mighty Saruman belongs with four other wizards to the Guardians of Middle Earth that care for order and balance in the world. Especially Saruman arranges the fate of the free nations at his own discretion. As head of the White Council, he fears with growing unease that Gandalf the Grey and Thorin Oakenshield’s companions could mess up his careful calculations. Saruman is indeed very old and wise but gives in to his subliminal weakness and is greedy for power - a greed that ultimately produces the most deadly of all unions.

ELROND
Elrond is one of the oldest and wisest Elves who still live in Middle Earth. He is the Lord of Rivendell, the last homely house east of the Sea. Thorin & Co. stay only for a short time in Rivendell, but Elrond offers Bilbo and the dwarves lodging and food. The dwarves have a natural aversion to the Elves, but accept their help gladly. Elrond responded suspiciously to the dwarves’ project to reclaim their stolen treasure, but he gives those secret information that Gandalf and Thorin need to reach the Lonely Mountain.

GALADRIEL
Galadriel is the oldest of the remaining elves in Middle-earth and has the gift of foresight. As the signs are increasing that doom threatens Middle-earth, she secretly supports Gandalf in his mission to track down the cause of evil. Galadriel knows of course that the Fellowship must succeed if the evil power shall not win the upper hand and the darkness dominates everything.

THRANDUIL
The mighty Elf-lord and legendary warrior Thranduil is Legolas 's father. As King of the Woodland Realm he rules over the north of a large forest area, once known as the Green Forest that now bears the ominous name Mirkwood. During the long years of darkness Thranduil has increasingly isolated from the outside world - he cares only about his own people. An ancient, bitter feud led to the situation that he basically rejects all dwarves - and especially a certain dwarf, namely Thorin Oakenshield.

LEGOLAS
Legolas is the Prince of the Woodland Realm and a high elf like his father Thranduil. However, you meet him rarely at the royal court - much rather he patrols the area with the forest guards of the Woodelves. The large and slim versed fighter is absolutely loyal to his father and his people. But the events of the outside worldby now leave traces in the isolated world of the Woodelves. Because he sees the disaster coming, Legolas faces the choice to follow either his father or his conscience.

TAURIEL
The female Woodelf of Mirkwood is as dangerous as beautiful. As a charge of King Thranduil and commander of the Woodland Realm protection troops Tauriel is very opinionated and passionate about representing what she thinks is right. The great warrior proves herself with the use of her two daggers and bows and arrows. Like Legolas, Tauriel turns to be extremely quick and agile in battle. She has lived for hundreds of years in Middle-earth, but is still one of the youngest of the Elves and has rarely ventured out of the great forest.

TROLLS
Tom, Bert and William are trolls who have settled in the Trollshaws and pillage and eat everything that crosses their path. As Thorin & Co. inadvertently disturb their evening meal, the trolls capture Bilbo and the dwarf band and begin immediately to make a feast out of them - they have no idea that Bilbo and his friends will hardly accept this without a fight.

GOBLIN-KING
The Goblin King is a huge, grotesquely bloated monster that in the years of his tyrannical rule over the miserable inhabitants of the Goblin town grew fat and flabby. The Goblin town is a collection of skew-whiff ramshackle huts deep in the caves of the Misty Mountains. He commands a bunch of foul, polluted, with scars and ulcers studded goblins. Basically, they are bandits, they live by what they can pick up from passengers on the passes through the mountains. The Goblin King and his followers manage to capture Bilbo and the dwarves. The Goblin King is more wily and smarter than it seems. He takes pleasure in torturing his prisoners - he almost succeeds to finish off Thorin Oakenshield and his companions.

GRINNAH
Grinnah is the interrogation specialist of the goblins. He ensures that Thorin & Co. are brought before the Goblin King. He constantly carries a barbed whip and takes every opportunity to use it. Although cunning and vicious, he is like all goblins basically a coward. Fawning and obsequious, he serves his master, the rich and moody Goblin King, but secretly he despises him.

AZOG
It was said that Azog the Desecrator fell many years ago in the great battle between the Orcs and the Dwarves. But now he appears again at the top of a deadly horde of killer orcs. For Gandalf begins a race against time because he has to figure out the connection between the most dangerous orc commander and the growing evil, which takes shape in the ruins of the fortress of Dol Guldur. One thing is totally clear: no one will deter Azog from his intention to destroy Thorin Oakenshield’s companions to the last dwarf.

FIMBUL
The exceedingly cruel orc Fimbul is one of Azog’s master hunters. He commands a horde of warg riders who trace their victims in the saddle of their gigantic wolf beasts. Fimbul has taken up the scent of Thorin Oakenshield & Co. and will catch the dwarves before they reach the Lonely Mountain.

BOLG
Bolg is the offspring of Azog the Desecarator - like his father, he is huge pale orc. He is the overseer in the dungeons of Dol Guldur - torturing is his hobby. He garnishes his armor with the bones and the blood of his victims. This husky Orc fears nothing and nobody - until he suddenly meets an unexpected opponent.

GOLLUM
Gollum was once a Hobbit-like creature named Smeagol - body and soul have been poisoned by a small, plain gold ring, which he hid in a gloomy cave in the Misty Mountains. Gollum does not know what is going on with "his treasure" - but he realizes that it is more valuable than his life. After the chance encounter with a strange enemy Gollum realizes that he has lost "his treasure", and rightly concludes: The hobbit Bilbo Baggins of the Shire has stolen it. So begins the hunt over mountains and through deserts that takes years and costs many lives, until in the end this miserable creature holds the fate of Middle-earth in his hand.

BEORN
The gigantic Beorn is the last of the ancient people of the skin changer: He can transform into a huge bear-like creature. He lives alone, only tolerates the company of his beloved animals and does not appreciate any visitors - especially not dwarfs. Gandalf knows that the companions have to take the risk and ask Beorn for help, because otherwise they will hardly survive their journey through Wilderland.

EAGLES
The ancient Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains are huge birds of prey, led by Gwaihir, the Windlord. The wild and dangerous animals owe nothing to anyone. Just because they hold true to Gandalf, the giant birds come to the aid of Bilbo and the dwarves in order to save them in last minute from the claws of a deadly enemy.

WARGS
The huge, fierce, wolf-like monsters are among the most fearsome predators in whole Middle-earth. The Orcs breed the Wargs to hunt in packs and to ride on their backs into battle. The most dangerous of these beings is the White Warg, a giant she-wolf, which the huge pale orc Azog the Desecrator is riding.

GIANT SPIDERS OF MIRKWOOD
In the course of many years, giant spiders nestled in the once peaceful Greenwood and helped that he got the eerie name Mirkwood. It is believed that these creatures are the offspring of the monstrous Shelob the Great. They devour unfortunate travelers who go astray in the forest. But when the big spiders catch a company of dwarves in their webs, they suddenly have to deal with an unusual, unseen opponent whose sting is even longer than her own!

Fantastic work. Thank you very much indeed.

A couple of interesting lines which have lingered in both translations.

That Galadriel "secretly" supports Gandalf - one assumes in defiance of the decision of the WC overall?

The naming of Fimbul is a nice nod to the Norse

That Legolas will seemingly feature in the background to Thranduil's march to BOFA

And that Saruman will not be leaving TH with his white untarnished.

Interestinger and interestinger!

The overall point is a personal response one

but I think "bumping into one another" might be a little off the mark at this stage. It does seems that each of the characters would have legitimate or logical reasons to be where they are encountered (Galadriel at the WC, Legolas in Mirkwood etc). It's not quite as if Gandalf keeps running into people at the supermarket checkout.

(emphasis mine)

So will we see this in the films, or do you think this was just written for the action figure to tell more of Gollum's story that won't actually be shown in the Hobbit?

Maybe there's something in the appendices I'm forgetting

But it's pretty clear in The Hobbit that the orc/goblin villains, Smaug, and the Necromanacer are separate from each other and don't work together. Even in the Quest for Erebor, Gandalf only says that he was afraid that Smaug and Sauron might become allies - there's no indication they actually did or even communicated. Middle-earth is a big world and not everyone has to be connected. It's like making Butterbur an undercover agent for Gondor.

The books make it clear that he's dead

I'm not a purist, but I can't see any point in having Azog survive the battle or (more likely) an undead Azog. They're already making up a Nazgul storyline to give the Necromancer something to "necromance" - isn't that enough?

It's starting to look -

- as though the Battle of Five Armies is the culmination of both the Dol Guldur and Dragon storylines.

So -

Hobbit Film 1 : Getting There
Hobbit Film 2 : Taking Down The Main Bad Guys
Hobbit Film 3 : Unfinished Business

I suspect Azog gets killed (again?) at Dol Guldur in the second movie, then Bolg decides to get payback in the third.

(I'm thinking that in the original version of story, an audience might be a bit sympathetic for Bolg. I mean, the Dwarves killed his Dad all those years ago, back when he was just a little Orcling....)

Random observations.

Gandalf: "On his way Gandalf finds indication that the world could be haunted by an ancient evil. To get to the truth of the matter, Gandalf has to leave his companions on their own devices - his own path leads him into the darkest corners of Middle-earth, where he found his worst suspicions confirmed." So the strike against Dol Guldur is not something the White Council had planned beforehand, but something Gandalf finds necessary when the Quest for Erebor is already underway? Will he still visit Dol Guldur beforehand and retrieve Thráin's map and key, or will it all be combined into one single visit?

Bofur: "The sympathetic Bofur has the terrible habit to utter self-evident things." He's going to utter the next "they're taking the Hobbits to Isengard".

Thranduil: "An ancient, bitter feud led to the situation that he basically rejects all dwarves - and especially a certain dwarf, namely Thorin Oakenshield." Hmm. An animosity towards the dwarves is understandable, but why Thorin especially? Sounds more personal than simply a rejection of the Longbeard's royal line.

Azog: "It was said that Azog the Desecrator fell many years ago in the great battle between the Orcs and the Dwarves. But now he appears again at the top of a deadly horde of killer orcs." A rather literal application of Sauron's title as the Necromancer, it would seem. Either that, or Dáin's decapitation didn't turn out quite as...decapitating.

Bolg: This husky Orc fears nothing and nobody - until he suddenly meets an unexpected opponent. This unexpected opponent being Gandalf seems likely.

Well the text does support links between Sauron and the Orcs

I think there are perfectly good readings of the appendices which suggest links between Sauron and the Orcs of Azog/ Bolg. Now to what extent Sauron exerted control is up to interpretation but there are clues to support the idea.

Firstly the concrete:

"C2480. Orcs begin to make secret strongholds in the Misty Mountains so as to bar all the passes into Eriador. Sauron begins to people Moria with his creatures."
ROTK

So we can be sure that Moria at this time an for a period afterwards was peopled with Sauron's creatures. This could well have included Azog himself or it is possible that Azog took over leadership. Here we run into the question of how long Orcs live - to which we have no consistent answer but Bolg lived for 151 years at the least, so Azog may well have been a creature of Sauron to some extent.

As a secondary point we may wonder why the Orcs should populated strongholds in order to bar all passage across the mountains if not influenced by some wider strategy. It is certainly not an obvious tactic for a series of unco-ordinated robber bands.

We have other suggestions in support of this link:

"The power of Sauron, servant of Morgoth, was then again growing in the world, though the Shadow in the Forest that looked towards Moria was not yet known for what it was. All evil things were stirring."
ROTK

And

"Orcs again multiply in secret and occupy many deep places (especially those anciently made by the Dwarves) in the Misty Mountains. They do this so stealthily that none are aware of it, until they have great forces hidden and are ready to bar all the passes from Eriador into Anduin's vales, according to the plan of their master in Dol Guldur. Orcs and Trolls occupy parts of the now empty Mines of Moria."
The Peoples of Middle-Earth, HoME Vol 12.

We also have a belief on the part of the Dwarves that the misfortunes of Thorin's family, which were in no small part the doing of the Orcs in question were ultimately caused by Sauron.

"None the less it may well be, as the Dwarves now believe, that Sauron by his arts had discovered who had this Ring, the last to remain free, and that the singular misfortunes of the heirs of Durin were largely due to his malice."
ROTK

Now I do not seek to make the case that there is only one possible reading or that it needs to be all or nothing. But I do think that, given no evidence to the contrary, it is not an illegitimate view to hold that Sauron did exert at least some control over the Orcs in the Misty Mountains.

What about the report of Azog being changed to Yazneg?

There seems to be outdated information in Azog's description. According to John Rawls' listing at Kathryn Rawlings & Associates, the character that he is playing is no longer known as Azog, but as Yazneg--a name that has been trademarked by The Saul Zaentz Company. This argues against a resurrected Azog.

Conan Stevens is portraying Bolg of the North. John Rawls was going to be Azog, but is now Yazneg. Azog does not seem to be appearing (unless it is in flashback in a voice-less CGI role).

Well, now we have no current cast member who is to play Azog. That is one indication that he may be written out of the film(s).

Marketing inertia

The name Azog appeared in the trading card list, the first action figure list, and now this one too--not to mention the original casting reports. It seems pretty unlikely that the character has been eliminated completely. More likely they've just moved Rawls to a different role.

Edit: Actually Azog does not appear in the original action figure list (but neither do Bolg, Fimbul, or Grinnah, so the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence). So that leaves this (questionable) source and the tabletop card game, which will certainly be expanded to include characters that don't make the films. So I take back the above.

I do agree...

But Bolg at Dol Guldur seems to be an odd coincidence. What's a prince orc doing turturing people under Sauron's command? Unless, maybe Bolg becomes Thrain's torturer through want of revenge.

It's mainly the rumoured ones. Estel, Gimli, Arwen, Sam etc. Could it not be possible that maybe these people were either busy at the time, or simply weren't of enough interest to warrant being in the movie? Of all the inhabitants of Middle-earth we keep seeing the same ones over and over... The more cameos there are the more Middle-earth appears to shrink in size and diversity.

Have there been any credible reports

Of those - Sam etc. Or indeed any reports at all?

But as for Bolg, as I posted earlier I think the Sauron's link to the Misty Moutnain Orcs will be overt so I suspect it won't be portrayed as a coincidence.

It may even be that Bolg leads the orcs who pursued Thrain into Mirkwood at his capture - since he started out in Ered Luin, he would presumably have had to cross the Misty Mountains somewhere.

"Little is known of what happened to him afterwards. It would now seem that as soon as he was abroad with few companions he was hunted by the emissaries of Sauron. Wolves pursued him, Orcs waylaid him, evil birds shadowed his path, and the more he strove to go north the more misfortunes opposed him. There came a dark night when he and his companions were wandering in the land beyond Anduin, and they were driven by a black rain to take shelter under the eaves of Mirkwood."

If at this point if Azog was still dead/ wounded/ believed to be dead then Bolg would still be after a bit of vengance. Pursuing him to Dol Guldur, he would have a pretty good reason to stay on and be part of Thrain's torture.

I realise there's no solid evidence for the other cameos. But I'm just saying, it's a concern and a possibility, if PJ goes over-the top.

I'm also not against this Bolg change. The possibility of zombie Azog is a little worrying. And the fact the Bolg's character description fails to mention that he became king of the Moria orcs after his father's death seems odd. But, maybe PJ's orcs simply don't have a monarchy system. Which, I guess is fine.

Exactly...

"Yazneg is the character John Rawls is now playing in the hobbit films. He is no longer playing Azog."

That is my understanding as well. In addition, I don't know if the role of Azog is still featured in the film(s) at all.

This also checks out with the picture from the Bridge Direct figure here:

http://geek-news.mtv.com/...C_TheBridge_open.jpg

From what it's possible to make out, the description of Bilbo in the pic above seems similar to the one included in this list...so that would give some credence to it as well.

Hmmm, what if?....

What if the Azanulbizar scene of Dain killing Azog has not been filmed, and it is some of the "additional material from the appendices" that Peter Jackson realized in hindsight was important that he now plans to film next year?

possibly

could be. If he wants to flesh out the dwarves/ goblins war then that would be one way to do it. Only thing is, Thror has been cast for a long time. Now the only way to get him in there is to show his death because that, aside from a brief appearance when Smaug first attacks, is all Thror has to do with things.

So Frodo Baggins boarded the great ship and passed on into the west till the sweet fragrance on the air filled his sense and the sound of singing came over the water. Then it seemed to him that, as in a dream, he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country. The third age of Middle Earth was over, the days of the Rings had passed and the story and song of those times was at an end.

Well, we heard about Azog long before Yazneg

In fact, if I remember correctly, we read about Azog in the movie even before we got word about Bolg. If nothing else, that shows that including Azog was not an afterthought.

More likely character descriptions

The title of the original post is "Ein Überblick über die Figuren," or an overview of the "figures." In German, Figur (plural- Figuren) is commonly used to refer to characters, as in a novel or a movie. I doubt that these refer to manufactured figurines, as the page contains no information regarding a manufacturer, specifications, availability, etc... Also, the tags associated with the post do not contain any refererences to collectibles or figurines, but rather the names of the characters, the author and the book.

Subsequent posts have indicated some form of confirmation from WB. In either case these appear to be at least presented as character descriptions.

Funnier was the similar slip in Dori's description

Considering that "Dori" is in modern times thought of as more of a female name, I thought this was rather humorous:

Quote
Dori is the strongest dwarf in the crowd, and spends most of her time taking care of Ori, the youngest, so that is not cold or killed by the Orcs and Wargs.

For a while I thought maybe they would go so far as to actually make one of the thirteen dwarves a dwarfette, so this caught me off guard momentarily. (I'm still not sure about pretty-boys Fili & Kili).

And then there's the bit about Gloin's wife being a "famous beauty with a very fine beard." Does that lend credence to the theory that this depicts a portrait of Gimli's mum?

"The Naugrim were ever, as they still remain, short and squat in stature; they were deep-breasted, strong in the arm, and stout in the leg, and their snouts were long. Indeed this strangeness they have that no Man nor Elf has ever seen a snoutless Dwarf - unless he were rhinoplasted in mockery, and would then be more like to die of shame than of many other hurts that to us would seem more deadly. For the Naugrim have snouts from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike..." (History of Middle Earth, volume 11, The War of the Truffles, p. 205)
